Art BlakeyArt Blakey & The Jazz Messengers (aka Moanin) ... LP
Blue Note, 1958. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
One of Art Blakey's first true moments of genius! This transitional version of the Jazz Messengers included two parts – Lee Morgan and Bobby Timmons – of the holy Morgan/Shorter/Timmons trilogy, and it's also got the added bonus of Benny Golson on tenor, who was at the height of his power at this point. The record really shines in ways that few Blakey albums shone since his days with Horace Silver – in that it's a forum for fresh new writing, most importantly Golson's landmark compositions "Blues March" and "Along Came Betty", and Timmons' instant classic "Moanin". The whole album's wonderful, though, and Golson's edgey modernism adds a strong dimension to the group's usual soulful romping groove!

Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersBuhaina ... LP
Prestige (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue).... $15.99
An amazing album that has Art Blakey completely reinventing himself for the 70s! Blakey shifts from straight hardbop to kind of a modal soul jazz groove, touched with some of the electric playing of the younger jazz generation, but not enough to qualify as fusion or funk. Instead, he's working with some great younger players – like Carter Jefferson, Woody Shaw, and Michael Howell – hitting a groove that reminds us of some of the best underground soul jazz on labels like Muse or Strata East. Includes the amazing long groovers "Mission Eternal" and "Chant For Bu", a famous Tribe Called Quest sample – plus new electric piano versions of "Moanin" and "Along Came Betty", both of which feature vocals by Jon Hendricks.

Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersTheory Of Art (aka A Night In Tunisia – RCA) ... CD
RCA, 1958. Used .... $6.99
A reissue of one of Blakey's best non-Blue Note sides from the late 50s, a killer album that sports a great lineup of the Jazz Messengers that included Jackie McLean, Johnny Griffin, Bill Hardman, Sam Dockery and Spanky DeBrest. The three of them sparkle and shine with the sort of brilliance that Blakey's leadership brings to the group, and they wail their way through a 13 minute long reading of "Night In Tunisia", with excellent solos all around, and the other cuts "Theory Of Art", "Couldn't It Be You?", "Evans", and "Off The Wall". This reissue adds the bonus number "Social Call" recorded for RCA at very nearly the same time, but with a larger group that features Wynton Kelly in place of Sam Dockery, plus the addition of Lee Morgan, Sahib Shihab, Melba Liston and Cecil Payne in the horn section.
(Out of print.)

Blue Note, Late 50s. Very Good (pic cover).... $11.99 Just Sold Out!
The record really shines in ways that few Blakey albums shone since his days with Horace Silver – in that it's a forum for fresh new writing, most importantly Golson's landmark composition "Blues March" and Timmons' instant classic "Moanin" – both of which make up the abbreviated version of this 7" ep version of the full LP.
(Sleeve has split seams and a drillhole through the center.)

new Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersChild's Dance ... LP
Prestige, 1972. Used .... $18.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful Art Blakey album from the early 70s, and one that's got the same sort of electric soul jazz vibe as his great Buhania record! Art's playing here with a great set of musicians that includes Woody Shaw, George Cables, John Hicks, and Ramon Morris – and the group grooves together in a style that sounds more like a Strata East recording that it does like Blakey's classic Blue Notes! The tracks are long, with a very soulful vibe, some nice electric touches, and a good modal groove at the best moments. Titles include "Child's Dance", "C.C.", and "Song For A Lonely Woman" – but the whole album's great, and not to be passed up if you dig 70s soul jazz!
(Green label pressing. Cover has a cut corner.)

new Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersDrum Suite ... LP
Columbia, 1956/1957. Used .... $14.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible early experimental album from Art Blakey – one of the first to feature him in expanded percussion format! Side one of the album features the extended "Drum Suite" – a set of 3 tracks ("The Sacrifice", "Cubano Chant", and "Oscalypso") that has Blakey and Jo Jones on drums, joined by Sabu Martinez on bongos and Charles Wright on tympani and gong. Ray Bryant snakes some soulful piano through the set and Oscar Pettiford is on bass and cello – and the overall feeling of the side is similar to some of Blakey's work in the format for Blue Note – like the albums Afro-Drum Orgy or Holiday for Percussion. Side two has straight hard bop, played by Blakey's 1957 combo that included Jackie McLean and Bill Hardman – and the group grooves hard on a classic reading of "Nica's Tempo", plus the cuts "D's Dilemma" and "Just For Marty".
(6 eye pressing, with deep groove. Cover has light wear, some splash stains, tape on the top seam, and a bit of pen on the back.)

new Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersTough! ... LP
Cadet, 1957. Used .... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of those obscure sessions recorded during the years after the time Blakey and Horace Silver broke up, and before he reestablished himself as a key leader on Blue Note during 1958. Features a striking early lineup of the Jazz Messengers featuring Jackie McLean(alto) and Bill Hardman(trumpet) with Sam Dockery and Spanky DeBrest. Included are a swinging Gershwin medley and two Duke Jordan tunes "Scotch Blues" and the classic "Flight to Jordu".
(Blue label mono pressing. Vinyl has a few light clicks on Side 1.)

new Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersJazz Messengers (Columbia) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia, 1956. New Copy .... $5.99 6.99 Out Of Stock
A killer early album by Art Blakey and his first incarnation of The Messengers – recorded before Horace Silver left the group, and a rare non-Blue Note outing done for Columbia Records! The ensemble here features Donald Byrd on trumpet, Hank Mobley on tenor, and Doug Watkins on bass – alongside Silver's piano and Blakey's thundering work on drums – and the album is virtually a blueprint for the sound of hardbop in years to come – focused and intense, but still with plenty of room for individual solo expression! Tracks include a classic reading of "Nica's Dream", plus Horace Silver's great "Ecaroh", and Mobley's own "Infra-Rae" and "Hank's Symphony". CD also features 5 bonus tracks – 1 unreleased – with titles that include "Weird-O", "Ill Wind", "Late Show", and "Deciphering The Message".

Art BlakeyAfricaine (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1959/1981. New Copy .... $15.99
Killer work from the classic late 50s years of the Jazz Messengers – and an album that Blue Note didn't choose to release until the end of the 70s! The record's a historic one – as it mark's Wayne Shorter's first session with the group, and the first time that they recorded his great composition "Lester Left Town" – a wonderful tune that sounds a bit different here than on the later Jazz Messengers recording of the composition. Shorter's talent is already burning brightly at this point – as is that of trumpeter Lee Morgan – and other group members include Walter Davis Jr on piano, Jymie Merritt on bass, and Blakey on drums. Titles include "Lester Left Town", "Haina", "The Midget", "Celine", and "Africaine", which has a guest appearance by Dizzy Reece on congas!

Art BlakeyArt Blakey's Big Band ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1957. New Copy .... $15.99
Quite an unusual record from Art Blakey – a rare big band session, recorded with a lineup that's quite different than the usual Jazz Messengers! Turns out, Blakey's quite good in this setting – and has the same firey energy to direct a larger ensemble that he has when working with a smaller quintet. The added players here really help him express some new musical ideas with greater depth – almost like the added percussionists on some of his drum-heavy Blue Note dates of the late 50s. Members of the group include John Coltrane and Al Cohn on tenor, Sahib Shihab on alto, Donald Byrd and Idrees Sulieman on trumpet, Melba Liston on trombone, and Walter Bishop on piano – and titles include "Last Date", "The Outer World", "Midriff", "Tippin", and "Pristine".

Art BlakeyAt The Jazz Corner Of The World Vol 1 (24 Bit RVG Remaster) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1959. Used .... $18.99
One of the many albums that the Jazz Messengers recorded live at Birdland, and one that features a transitional lineup for the band that has new guard players Lee Morgan on trumpet and Bobby Timmons on piano, and old guard player Hank Mobley on tenor. Everyone grooves in a very hard fashion – and the set's an excellent link between the raw mid 50s version of the Messengers, and the groundbreaking 1960 edition. The set list of this first volume includes "Hipsippy Blues", "Justice", "Just Coolin", and a nice version of "Close Your Eyes".

new Art BlakeyFree For All ... LP
Blue Note, 1964. Very Good+ .... $19.99
Killer material from the 1964 edition of the Jazz Messengers – an incredibly hard-hitting sextet that features Freddie Hubbard, Curtis Fuller, Wayne Shorter, Reggie Workman, and Cedar Walton. The mix of players is amazing, and Walton's warm lyricism is a haunting combination with the sharp-edged solos of Shorter and Hubbard. All tracks are long, and titles include "Free For All" and "Hammer Head" – both written by Shorter – plus "The Core", by Hubbard, and a beautiful version of Clare Fischer's "Pensativa".
(Liberty/UA pressing. Cover has some wear, and a 3 inch spot of staining & peeling on the top right corner.)

Art BlakeyJazz In Paris – 1958 Paris Olympia ... CD
Universal (France), 1958. New Copy .... $8.99 11.99
An excellent live set by the Jazz Messengers – recorded in Paris in 1958, but with a hard heavy groove that's right up there with their best Blue Note work. The group at this time – Blakey, Bobby Timmons, Lee Morgan, Benny Golson, and Jymie Merritt – plays hard, heavy, and straight ahead, with no other interference from outside players – and the track list is a batch of classic Jazz Messenger standards, stretched out a bit longer than usual, with plenty of solo space! Titles include "Moanin", "Justice", "Whisper Not", "Blues March", and "I Remember Clifford".

Art BlakeyParis Jam Session ... CD
Universal (France), 1960. New Copy .... $8.99 11.99
A fantastic live set from Art Blakey – recorded in Paris in 1960, with a version of the Jazz Messengers that includes Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, Walter Davis Jr on piano, and Jymie Merritt on bass! Best of all, though, is that the group is joined by two Paris jazz giants on two tracks – the great saxophonist Barney Wilen on tenor, and American ex-patriot Bud Powell – who was doing some of his best work in Paris at the time, and sits in on the keys instead of Davis. Wilen's incredible tone sounds great next to Shorter's horn – and all the tracks are long enough to give all soloists plenty of room to move around. Titles include "The Midget", "Bouncing With Bud", and "Dance of The Infidels".

Buddy DeFranco — Blues Bag – Leonard Feather's Encyclopedia Of Jazz Of The 60s Vol 2 ... LP
Vee Jay, 1964. Very Good- Gatefold .... $3.99
A real lost treasure – and an incredible session that offers a real meeting of minds that's far more than you'd expect from the simple cover and title! The set is a later one for Vee Jay, and it brings together half of the Jazz Messengers with a batch of west coast players – in a groove that wonderfully mixes together different traditions and rhythms in jazz – and which steps out with a sound that's far more than the sum of its parts! Art Blakey, Lee Morgan, and Curtis Fuller join a group headed by Buddy De Franco, and featuring Victor Feldman on piano and vibes, plus Victor Sproles on bass and Freddie Hill on trumpet. The sound of the group is quite unusual – and a lot lighter than you'd guess – giving Buddy plenty of room to solo in a breezy style that's grown tremendously since his 50s recordings – pushed along by some heavier soul from Art and the group. Titles include "Rain Dance", "Blues Bag", "Twelve Tone Blues", "Kush", and "Cousin Mary".
(Cover has some wear, with a small split on the bottom seam.)

Lee Morgan — Here's Lee Morgan ... LP
Vee Jay, 1960. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
An excellent early session from a young Lee Morgan – a set that we'd rank right up there with his best Blue Note material of the time! The set's from a time when Lee's trumpet was a key force in the Jazz Messengers – and there's definitely a Messengers vibe going on here, thanks to drums from Art Blakey – who works in a quintet alongside Clifford Jordan on tenor, Wynton Kelly on piano, and Paul Chambers on bass. Jordan's tenor has a nice sharp edge – and like some of the Wayne Shorter sessions for Vee Jay, there's a nice sense of darkness here that's a bit different than some of Morgan's usual moments. Titles include "Terrible T", "Mogie", "Bess", and Wayne Shorter's "Running Brook".

new Art BlakeyHard Drive ... CD
Bethlehem/Solid (Japan), 1957. New Copy .... $15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A well-titled set from Art Blakey – considering the hard-driving sound of the group! The album's one of the best from that unusual year of 1957 – almost a "lost" year for Art, when he was working away from Blue Note with a very different lineup of the Jazz Messengers than on his famous sessions for that label! The players here are all great – and include Johnny Griffin on tenor, Bill Hardman on trumpet, Junior Mance on piano, and Spanky DeBrest on bass – all working with a style that's a bit loose and open, allowing plenty of space for solos! Griffin's horn has all the sharp edges you'd expect, and Hardman's great too – and Blakey himself seems to sit back a bit more than usual in his chair, letting the soloists lead the tracks, instead of kicking things into gear from the drums. Titles include "Deo X", "Sweet Sakeena", "Late Spring", "Krafty", and "For Miles & Miles".

new Art BlakeyIn This Korner ... LP
Concord, 1978. Used .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Art Blakey at the Keystone Korner – really rattling the rafters with a great lineup that includes Bobby Watson on alto sax, David Schnitter on tenor, and Valery Ponomarev on trumpet! Although the Shorter/Morgan lineup is always hailed as one of Blakey's best, we're also pretty partial to this great late 70s stretch of The Jazz Messengers – as it shows some wonderful early flowering of Watson's alto, and his songwriting abilities; Ponomarev's well-blown trumpet lines; and Schnitter's crisp, sharp lines on tenor – always carved out with a great depth of feeling. Add to the mix some great piano from James Williams, and bass from Dennis Irwin, and you've got a great lineup next to Blakey's drums – all working together in a rough-edged, hard soul space on tracks that include "Pamela", "Unlimited", "Dark Side Light Side", "Blues For Two", and "In This Korner".

new Art BlakeyLike Someone In Love ... LP
Blue Note, 1960. Used .... $59.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest Art Blakey albums from the days when the Jazz Messengers lineup included Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, and Bobby Timmons! The whole set's a perfect example of the blend of lyricism and fire that Blakey and this group could craft – from the magical poetry of their interpretation of "Like Someone In Love", to the wealth of original tunes like "Noise In The Attic", "Giantis", "Johnny's Blue", and "Sleeping Dancer Sleep On" – all of which went onto be the blueprint for the sound of the second wave of hardbop at Blue Note! Pure magic – and one of the greats!

new Benny Golson — Groovin' With Golson ... CD
New Jazz/OJC, 1958. Used .... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Although Benny Golson is perhaps best known as a lively arranger in the modern idiom, he's also a kick-ass tenor player when he wants to be – and on this classic, he definitely wants to be! Unlike some of Golson's more tightly arranged records of the early years, this date is a deeply gutsy soul jazz session – support from a group that includes Ray Bryant on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, Art Blakey on drums, and Curtis Fuller on trombone – all sliding into long tracks that have plenty of room for solos! The whole thing's a bit like the more spontaneous side of the Jazz Messengers groove – and titles include "The Stroller", "Drumboogie", "My Blues House", and a beautiful version of "Yesterdays".

new Lee Morgan — Lee-way ... LP
Blue Note, 1960. Used .... $39.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An undisputed masterpiece by Lee Morgan – and one of the first records in which he shed his straight bop sensibility, and began evolving into a soulful genius for the 60s! The album's got 4 long tracks that all build beautifully – really extended numbers that break the format of some of Lee's earlier work, and hint a bit at some of the more complicated touches he'd use on later sessions. All players are great – and include fellow Jazz Messengers Bobby Timmons on piano and Art Blakey on drums, plus Jackie McLean on alto and Paul Chambers on bass. Titles include the sublime "These Are Soulful Days" – a perfect model of soulful lyricism – plus "Midtown Blues", "Nakatini Suite", and "The Lion & The Wolff".

new Art Blakey (with Billy Harper) — Moanin' ... CD
LRC, 1968. New Copy .... $5.99 7.99 Out Of Stock
A fantastic live set from 1968 – recorded after Blakey's classic Blue Note years, but with a group of fantastic players that includes a young Billy Harper on tenor, Ronnie Matthews on piano, and Julian Priester on trombone. Harper alone is worth the price of the CD – as his firey solos are great, and the whole album's an excellent peek at his early career! There's a sense of open freedom here that's quite different than the earlier Jazz Messengers groove – and this European date is a great complement to the better-known US live recording with the same group from the time. The set features a number of nice long tracks – like Slide Hampton's "Slide's Delight", Billy Harper's "Blues For Eros", Bobby Timmons' "Moanin", and the Jazz Messengers' standard "You Don't Know What Love Is".

new Art BlakeyGolden Boy ... LP
Colpix, 1963. Used .... $6.99 Out Of Stock
An obscure Jazz Messengers session – but a great one! The album is ostensibly a set of jazz versions of tunes from the musical Golden Boy, and the group this time is a larger one than usual – a total of 10 players, led by Blakey – and playing beautifully over arrangements from Wayne Shorter, Curtis Fuller, and Cedar Walton! The style's not any sort of clunky "jazz meets Broadway" mode, though – as the care taken by the artists involved help elevate the tunes, and the performance, to a whole new soulful level – hardly what you'd expect! The group features trumpet work from Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard, tenor from Wayne Shorter, alto from James Spaulding, trombone from Curtis Fuller, baritone from Charles Davis, piano from Cedar Walton, and bass from Reggie Workman – all very hip cats, working here with the same sort of large group textures you might hear on Freddie Hubbard's Body & Soul album from the same time, mixed with some more traditionally Blakey-led moments. Titles include "Yes I Can", "Theme From Golden Boy", "Lorna's Here", "This is The Life", and "There's A Party".
(Cover has light wear, with an ink stamp on the back.)

new Jackie McLean — Jackie's Pal – Introducing Bill Hardman ... LP
Prestige, 1956. Used .... $7.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tight hardbop from Jackie McLean, played with a lot more gutsy fire than some of his Blue Note material – very open and jamming, with a rough edge we really like! Plus, the record introduces the excellent trumpeter Bill Hardman – a key player in the late 50s hardbop scene, especially in Blakey's pre-Lee Morgan Jazz Messengers. Tracks are long, and the remaining players – Mal Waldron on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums– do a great job of setting the scene. Titles include "Dee's Dilemma", "Sublues", "Just For Marty", and "Sweet Doll".
(OJC pressing – vinyl is nice, but cover has a bit of old stuck paper near the bottom.)
