VariousPsych Funk Sa Re Ga! – Seminar – Aesthetic Expressions Of Psychedelic Funk Music In India 1970 to 1983 ... CD
World Psychedelic Classics, 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $8.99 17.98
A funky psychedelic kaliedoscope of grooves from India – killer numbers from the 70s and into the early 80s – Psych Funk Sa-Re-Ga, from the folks who put together the equally heavy Psych-Funk 101 and Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas compilations! Most of cuts here have a raw, fuzzed out undercurrent of psychedelia – guitars that buzz or lead searingly, depending on the needs of the number – with heavy, funk-based drums and/or hand percussion with rumbling bass rhythms. From that core, they bust out mightily with more furious percussion, rhythms, mad horn arrangements, and vocals that work as either a sweetener or for even more wild-eyed excitement! In short, global psychedelic funk rhythms with regional Indian folk and classical flourishes, blended with mod, soul, garage and soundtrack influences from around the globe. It's a funky, psychedelic fusion of east and west that's billed as a seminar, but this is no academic endeavor – it's a psych funk party all the way! Includes "The Mod Trade" by The Black Beats, "Psychedelia" by X'Lents, "Somebody To Love – Edit" and "Gairaag Dance Music – Edit" by Kalyanji Anandji, "Dance Music From Hare Rama Hare Krishna" by RD Burman, "Lekar Ham Diwana Dil" by RD Burman feat Asha Bhosle & Kishore Kumar, "Mary Long" by Atomic Forest, "Dharmatma Theme Music" by Kalyanji Anandji, "Phir Teri Yaad" by Hemant Bhosle feat Asha Bhosle, "Thanimayil" by Ilaiyaraaja fet Vani Jairam & Chorus and more. 20 tracks in all – with a thick booklet of notes on each track, plus loads of photos, original album & poster art, and more. VariousWinter Of Discontent – Presented By Bob Stanley & Pete Wiggs ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $12.99 20.99
A stunning selection of tracks from a moment when things really got interesting on the UK scene – when the straighter guitar lines of early punk gave way to more unfamiliar instrumentation, unusual production, and offbeat rhythms – yet almost always with a really raw, stripped-down feel – thanks to the indie placement of most of these cuts! Some of the material is work that would later become known as post-punk, and referenced as a huge influence on later groups – but as with most Bob Stanley/Pete Wiggs collections, there's something here that goes way past the ordinary – as the set list is filled with all these great twists and turns, and some wonderful surprises that come from cuts that were issued on some of the much smaller labels of the period, compared to bigger indies like Rough Trade or Fast Product. The music's got a raw, experimental edge throughout – and Stanley and Wiggs provide plenty of illuminating notes – to support this package of 24 tracks that includes "Somebody" by Frankie's Crew, "Small Hours" by Karl's Empty Body, "Work" by Blue Orchids, "Violence Grows" by Fatal Microbes, "Where Were You" by The Mekons, "The Terraplane Fixation" by Animals & Men, "Bored Housewives" by Androids Of Mu, "Can't Cheat Karma" by Zounds, "No Forgetting" by Manchester Mekon, "Drink Problem" by Thin Yoghurts, "The Sideways Man" by The Digital Dinosaurs, "Different Story" by Tarzan, "Production Line" by The Door & The Window, and "The Window's Broken" by Human Cabbages. ✨✧ George DuningBell Book & Candle/1001 Arabian Nights ... CD
Colpix/Film Score Monthly, 1958/1959. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 George Duning soundtracks – back to back on one CD! Bell Book & Candle is a wonderful jazzy soundtrack from the end of the 50s – written for an ultra-cool film that starred Kim Novak and Jimmy Stewart in a comedy about beatnik witches in New York! Much of the soundtrack has a cool beat jazz sort of feel to it – and many tracks feature strong solo work by Pete and Conte Candoli, who also perform a bit in nightclub scenes in the film. Other tracks have a slightly more orchestral feel, but one that's still quite light, given the nice themes in the movie – and which also features some playful bits that still keep things jazzy. Titles include "Way Out Calypso", "Send Me Nicky", "Pyewacket Returns", "Zodiac Blues", "L'Assassin Ennuye", and "Shep Shook". 1001 Arabian Nights is pretty darn groovy too – not your usual version of the tales, as the film was an animated effort starring Jim Backus' Mr Magoo character! Duning's music has some of the dramatic and exotic touches you'd expect for an Arabian Nights film – but it's also got a lot more playful ones too, in keeping with the cartoony presentation. Backus sings "Magoo's Blues", The Clark Sisters sing "Three Little Maids From Damascus", and other titles include "Unhappy Magoo", "Bar Fly Magoo", "Dream Ballet", "Crazy Carpet", and "Wedding Celebration". ✨✧ Alain GoraguerLa Planete Sauvage (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Sugar/Universal (France), 1973. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic soundtrack that's maybe even more legendary than the unusual animated film for which it was created – a funky French classic that stands strong in the best tradition of work by Serge Gainsbourg, Jean-Claude Vannier, and Michel Colombier! No surprise, Alain Goraguer is part of the same generation, and did some great early jazzy backings for Serge – but here, his style is much funkier, with lots of sweet keyboard lines, wah wah guitar, and soaring larger orchestrations that really put the whole thing together – clearly one of Alain's best musical moments – and filled with great tunes that include "Le Bracelet", "Deshominisation", "Mort De Draag", "La Femme", "Mira Et Ten", and "Ten Et Medor". Plus, this great reissue is mixed from the original tapes – and features 10 more bonus tracks – all appearing here for the first time ever! CD

P-Vine (Japan), 2022. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really cool take on the sounds of Studio Ghibli – one that brings classic melodies from the famous animated features into play with the production talents of Grey October Sounds – who delivers the goods with all the low-fi elements promised by the title! The approach is instrumental hip hop, but with a very different approach than usual – as the sweetness and spirit of the originals really grace the whole record in a really wonderful way – so that there's a sense of warmth and redemption that you'd not normally find in a record of beats, keyboards, and samples! Includes tunes from Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle In The Sky, and other Ghibli films – 10 tracks in all. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Los Saicos (aka Saicos)Demolician – The Complete Recordings 1965 to 1966 ... LP
Munster (Spain), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible batch of prime garage rock era nuggets from the Peruvian scene – fuzzy gems by the Saicos! The Saicos bring a sense of menace to these tunes – with a guitar tone touched with an eerie vibe, and lead vocals that are really piercing and gravelly in that instills this primordial edge that needs to be heard to be believed – but that balance it off with some moddish, British invasion grooves, too. The overall sound manages to blend both the heavy menace of cult acts like the Monks and the Seeds with the tunefulness of the Animals – and clear precursor the garage punk for decades to come! Titles include "Come On (Ven Aqui)", "Ana", "Demolicion", "Lonely Star (Estrella Solitaria)", "Cememterio", "Te Amo", "Fugitivo De Alcatraz", "Salvaje", "El Entierro De Los Gatos", "Besando A Otra" and "Intensamente". New Amsterdam, 2013. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful love letter to contemporary Brooklyn – originally commissioned by BAM, as part of a longer piece that included narration, animation, and paintings – but a work that stands more than strongly here on its own! The music has a wonderful mix of themes – sometimes straight, sometimes a bit more abstract, to the point of illustration – played by a shifting lineup of younger musicians who really deliver on the promise of Darcy James Argue's compositions – a group that includes John Ellis on tenor sax, Rob Wilkerson on alto, Ryan Keberle on trombone, Matt Holman on trumpet, Nadje Noordhuis on flugelhorn, and Sebatian Noelle on guitar. Titles include "The Neighborhood", "Builders", "Grand Opening", "Coney Island", "Construction/Destruction", "The Tallest Tower In The World", and "Missing Parts". CD

Cotillion, 1977. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
The height of French disco – a huge worldwide hit for Cerrone, a nutty bit of space disco that actually holds up pretty darn well over the years! The guy's not really a looker – and the strange "animal operation" cover almost makes this look like a prog rock album – which is where Cerrone probably got his inspiration for the incredible keyboard work on the set – but the record's a killer bit of club that went onto influence generations to come – and is arguably one of Cerrone's best moments ever! Includes the classic "Supernature", a catchy disco groover you'll recognize instantly – plus the tracks "Love Is Here", "Love Is The Answer", and "Sweet Drums". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bob DylanSlow Train Coming ... Cassette
Columbia, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
The first album in Dylan's so-called "Christian Period", but it's not really the uber-dramatic departure from the "old" Dylan that it was treated as at the time – gospel soul backing vocals and testifying lyricism for sure, but it sounds more like gospel has come to Dylan than it sounds like Dylan has "gone gospel". Slow Train Coming has a focused approach, ala Blood On The Tracks, even if this train doesn't come close to crossing over onto those particular tracks – and the return to a leaner, more focused vibe is welcome one. It's got stellar studio players in the mix, and producer Jerry Wexler's production touches on a soul sound, but smartly hews to Dylan's vocal style and lyrical focus. Dylan's high bar for a masterpiece given his trailblazing past didn't give this record or the following couple much a chance to succeed on their own merits back in the day, but all these years later...wow, this is really good, passionate stuff. Includes "Gotta Serve Somebody", "Precious Angel", "I Believe In You", "Slow Trait", "Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking", "Do Right To Me Baby (Do Unto Others)", "When You Gonna Wake Up", "Man Gave Name To All The Animals", "When He Returns". Cassette

✨✧ Fab 5 Freddy, Grandmaster Caz, Chris Stein, etc.Wild Style – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Animal/Mr Bongo (UK), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really great record, and maybe one of the few hip hop soundtracks to get at the real feel of the music on the streets – maybe no surprise, as the film for which it was created did the same thing! This isn't a fluffed-up Hollywood take on hip hop, with mainstream soul thrown into the mix – as the record was put together by Fab 5 Freddy and Chris Stein – the latter of whom really invests in his hip hop cred away from Blondie, and also provides some cool guitar bits and effects in the music too! There's some great freestyle bits and turntable tracks that really get at the underground side of the music that was alive and well at the time – and titles include "Wild Style Theme Rap 1" by Grandmaster Caz & Chris Stein, "Basketball Throwdown" by Cold Crush Bros & The Fantastic Four, "Stoop Rap" by Double Trouble & Rodney Cee, "Rammellzee & Shock Dell at the Amphitheatre" with Grandmixer DST, "Wild Style Subway Rap 2" by Grand Master Caz & Chris Stein, and "Cold Crush Brothers At The Dixie". ✨✧ Maynard FergusonMaynard '64 ... LP
Roulette, 1964. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Maynard swings it surprisingly nicely – in his standard big band mode, but with a lot more of an edge than in later years, thanks no doubt to some of the strong players he had in his group! Maynard's solos still have that blaring quality that marks him as a dominant showman, but he also gives ample room to some of the other soloists, especially on the longer tracks. Titles include "Rock Me To Sleep", "Animated Suspension", "He Can't Swing", "Vignette", "For The Cats", and "New Bag Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ James IngramIt's Your Night ... LP
Quest, 1983. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Early crossover work as a solo act from James Ingram – and a set that features some stellar production from Quincy Jones! The album's one of the best of Q's pop-styled efforts of the time – and although it played big at the time, it's got a sound that's much better than we remember, especially on the more upbeat numbers – rock-solid vocals from Ingram, sung with a youthful quality that's nicely shies away from some of his more clunky commercial modes. Titles include the big hit "Yah Mo B There", plus "She Loves Me", "Try Your Love Again", "Party Animal", "Whatever We Imagine", "One More Rhythm", and "There's No Easy Way". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Iron ButterflyIn-A-Gadda-Da-Vida ... LP
Atco, 1968. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
The album that rocked a million dorm rooms back in the 60s – and for good reason, too – given that the title track is a side-long, totally jamming monster – the kind of track that was really revolutionary at the time, and which still has a hell of an impact all these many years later! "In A Gadda Da Vida" was shortened to a single – with the big hook intact – but this classic album version runs for 17 minutes in length, and has the group doing all these cool jams with their instruments – all the animals in the garden of Eden talking to each other (or at least that's what our addled teenaged minds always thought!) Shorter tracks are mighty nice too – a heady, heavy brew of Hammond and fierce guitar from Erik Brann, on cuts all penned by group leader Doug Ingle. Titles include "Termination", "My Mirage", "Flowers & Roses", and "Most Anything You Want". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Akira Ishikawa & Count BuffalosAfrican Rock ... LP
Dan/Cinedelic (Italy), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Don't think "African rock", think spiritual jazz – as the set's a brilliant blend of the funky styles of Akira Ishikawa and his Count Buffalos combo with some deeper percussive elements that bring a whole new global sound to his music! Ishikawa was already a tremendous talent before this point in his career, but this set represents a handful of African-titled records that really had him hitting his stride – taking an older Japanese funky band mode and fitting it to some hipper elements for the 70s – including some sweet electric touches, used in all the right ways! This set may also be the most ambitious of these albums, too – as it's written like a larger suite of tracks – with titles that include "Love", "Hunting", "Animals", "Dawn", "Prayer", and "The Earth". Smalltown Supersound (Norway), 2002. Used ... Out Of Stock
Where their simultaneously issued Stix has a feel that owes more to studio fiddling and technological trickery, this album mines a more live vein, with less programmed beats, and more emphasis on their playing as a band. Overall though, the vibe is the same, defying easy description in that post ambient, contemporary post rock-Nu Jazz netherland, kind of a thinking man's soundtrack to the chill out room. 10 tracks in all, including "Cinematic", "Animal Chin", "Going Down", "Airborne" and "Low Battery". A great set of tracks by the Kinks – originally written as the soundtrack for a film that barely saw the light of day – yet presented here as a classic late 60s album that's up there with the other gems from the same period as Arthur and Village Green! A few tunes are instrumental – as you might expect from a soundtrack, and the songs hold together well with similar themes – and those cuts are mixed with some wonderful vocal numbers that have Ray Davies working at the top of his game – that picture postcard way of putting over a scene or a story – served up in titles that include the excellent "God's Children", an instrumental version of "Lola", and the cuts "Animals In The Zoo", "Whip Lady", "Dreams", "Helga", and "Willesden Green". The package offers up the classic uncensored version of "Kick Out The Jams" – the controversial cut whose story is almost more famous than the band itself – plus loads of other gems that include "I Can Only Give You Everything", "Looking At You (A Square single version)", "Ramblin Rose", "Come Together", "Rocket Reducer 62", "Teenage Lust", "Tonight", "High School", "Call Me Animal", The American Ruse", "Shakin Street", "The Human Being Lawnmower", "Miss X", "Sister Anne", "Skunk", and "Over & Over". ✨✧ Graeme MillerComet In Moominland ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the rarest work ever from composer Graeme Miller – tracks done for continued episodes of the Moomin animated series he scored with Steve Shill, but which were unused at the time, due to a shift in presentation of the series! The music here as all the charm of the other Moomins releases, and is maybe even more personal too – an odd mix of spare themes and light, lovely melodies – created by Miller on unusual instruments that include ocarina, kalimba, squeak box, shakers, and a whole host of other homemade instruments and lo-fi techniques! If you've seen the animation, you'll know how much these sounds match the warmth and intimacy of those images – on titles that include "Raft Journey", "The Cave", "Climbing The Lonely Mountain", "Indigenous Woodland Bird", "The Tornado", and "Locusts". ✨✧ Modern Jazz QuartetConcert In Japan 1966 ... LP
Atlantic (Japan), 1966. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
An excellent Japanese performance from the Modern Jazz Quartet – and a set that was issued in a bit of a lull during their 60s American years for Atlantic Records – which makes it even more important as a key part of their catalog at the time! The 1966 date has the combo in fine form – and almost stepping out with a bit of added soulfulness, in ways that echo some of the styles that Milt Jackson was exploring on his own at the time, and which seem to be brought back to the group! Milt's vibes are wonderful – ringing out with a great sense of pride and presence that may well go beyond earlier MJQ material – and titles include "Really True Blues", "The Cylinder", "Midsommer", "Animal Dance", "For Someone I Love", "Ralph's New Blues", "Pyramid", "Home", "Winter Tale", "Blues Milanese", and "Bag's Groove". Atlantic/Jazz Heritage, 1962. Used ... Out Of Stock
Truly one of the Modern Jazz Quartet's greatest albums – and a set that has an edge and a darkness that's missing from some of their other Atlantic records! Part of the reason for this may be the group's fantastic reading of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman" – a killer moody track that sounds great in the group's vibes/piano style – and which leads off the album with a chilling tone that's really unbelievable! The rest of the album's pretty great too – and there's a brooding intensity we don't normally hear in the piano of John Lewis and vibes of Milt Jackson. Other tracks include Gary McFarland's "Why Are You Blue" – plus John Lewi's "Belkis", "Animal Dance", "New York 19", and "Trieste". CD

Three different works, all created for artist Joan Jonas, and each with a slightly different approach! Pianist Jason Moran has a creative relationship with Jonas that extends back longer than a decade – and over the course of these pieces, you can really hear their ideas develop – from an initial mix of the music of Moran and the text of Jonas, to some richer more textural passages that are almost like paintings in music, words, and sound all coming together at once! Moran plays some keyboards in addition to acoustic piano, Jonas handles a bit of percussion, and the set also features voice by two other performers too. The works are "The Shape The Scent The Feel Of Things", "Reanimation", and "They Come To Us Without A Word". CD

The DVD/Blu-Ray has some other very cool material – including an interview and performance from Aspekte in Germany – tracks recorded at Cinq Grands Sur La Deux in france, a performance and interview from Get To Know in Australia, the documentary 24 Hours Bootleg Records, animation for "One Of These Days", and a Review interview of Aubrey Powell and Storm Thorgerson on album cover art. ✨✧ VariousJ Jazz 2 – Deep Modern Jazz From Japan 1969 to 1983 (with bonus track) ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 1960s/1970s/Early 1980s. Used ... Out Of Stock
An incredible trip through the 70s Japanese jazz scene – a second volume of J Jazz that's even bigger and better than the first – with unknown gems from private presses, indie labels, and rarities from the Japanese branches of the major labels, too! Compilers Tony Higgins & Mike Peden (who are both also responsible for the nicely done notes) follow through on all of the things we loved about the first J Jazz compilation, but improve on it by going bigger and digging deeper. The majority of the tracks were recorded from 1969 through the late 70s – with a few recorded in later years – and all have a wonderful way of being open to the stylistic inventions of the time without getting hung up on trends. So while there's some fusiony funk and electric piano, there's plenty of acoustic instrumentation and timelessly inventive material. BBE has outdone themselves on this excellent collection – and titles include "Dragon Dance" by Makoto Terashita & Harold Land, "Daguri" by Kohsuke Mine Quintet, "Distant Thunder" by Mabumi Yamguchi Quartet, "Animal Garden" by Miyasaka + 5, "Mother Of The Future" by Electro Keyboard Orchestra, "Serenade To A Dimly Lit Street" by Hiroshi Matsumoto/Hideo Ichikawa Quartet, "Teru-Teru Bozu" (Black Keys) by Teru Sakamoto Trio, "Little Giant" by Nobuo & Sharps & Flats, "Brown Trout" by Akira Miyazawa and more – plus the CD bonus track "Original Bill" by Koichi Matsukaze Trio. 15 tracks on 2CDs. A mostly orchestral score for this early 80s, feature-length animated sci fi film – penned and conducted by the great Elmer Bernstein, with a depth that's surprising, considering the movie! Elmer shows he's a consummate professional here – as he avoids any temptation to make things cheesy or sexy to fit the film, and instead turns out a top-shelf orchestral score played by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with some slight occasional voices at times. The funky freaky soundtrack to Ralph Bakshi's animated feature Fritz The Cat – a really messed-up little film based around the original character created by Robert Crumb! Like the movie, the album's got a very skittish kind of feel – leaping from one genre to the next with each different track – but mostly featuring some older numbers from the Fantasy catalog, plus some key newer tracks for the set that are nice and funky! Original tunes include the bad-rapping "Fritz The Cat", by Ed Bogas and The Watson Sisters – plus the instrumentals "Duke's Theme" and "Bertha's Theme" by Ray Shanklin, and "The Riot" and "Winston" by Ed Bogas. ✨✧ Joe FarrellPenny Arcade/Upon This Rock/Canned Funk ... CD
BGO (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
3 killer CTI classics from Joe Farrell in a 2CD set! Penny Arcade has grooves so sharp you could cut your trousers on them! Farrell's angular reed style is in perfect form here – grooving with a small group that includes Herbie Hancock on piano, Joe Beck on guitar, Steve Gadd on drums, and Don Alias on percussion – a combo that's got a harder, tighter feel than most CTI groups – a key reason why Joe's records of this time are so legendary! Includes a version of Stevie Wonder's "Too High" – one that breaks all over the beginning with these riffs by Farrell, then grooves into a CTI electric funk mode for about 13 minutes. All tracks are long – and other tracks include "Hurricane Jane", "Geo Blue", "Penny Arcade", and "Cloud Cream". Upon This Rock is another massive set from the funky reedman – with a lean, edgy groove to the set that's totally great. One cut features a guest group – with Herbie Hancock on piano, Steve Gadd on drums, and Don Alias on percussion – and the album includes the massively break-heavy title cut "Upon This Rock", plus "Seven Seas", "I Won't Be Back", and "Weathervane". There's nothing canned on Canned Funk – as the sound, style, and groove of the record is as fresh and freaky as the classic image on the cover! The sax lines are as angular as the rhythms – tight, choppy, and completely funky – no wonder the record's a CTI classic that folks have dug for years! Tracks are all nice and long – and titles include "Canned Funk", "Animal", and "Spoken Silence". CD

A really evocative little album from Bill Frisell – and that's saying a lot, given the rest of his work! The music was all written at a ranch in Big Sur – and has this spacious, airy sort of feel – one that draws on Bill's earlier style of guitar, but also inflects it with a slight Americanist tone – in ways that echo some of Charlie Haden or Pat Metheny's projects with a similar landscape ethos. The group retains a very ethereal feel – and features Eyvind Kang on viola, Hank Roberts on cello, Jenny Scheinman on violin, and Rudy Royston on drums – on titles that include "Hawks", "Cry Alone", "Animals", "Highway 1", "Gather Good Things", "The Big One", and "Going To California". An amazing record – one with a depth that goes way beyond its simple roots, and which has gone on to become one of the true Christmas classics of the 20th Century! Although a Christmas soundtrack, the album's more of a tapestry of sadness, longing, and loss – the best qualities that always emerge in true Christmas classics – underscoring the blue side of the season that's always lurking around corners from the happier moments. Vince Guaraldi penned this score back when he was a rising talent on the San Francisco scene – and in a way, it was almost his musical contribution to the cartoon that made it such a lasting favorite – even over and above the appeal of the famous animated characters. Most tunes are simple piano ones, but played with a phrasing that's beautifully timeless – and the few vocal numbers feature voices from the cartoon, singing softly with the music. Titles include the classic "Linus and Lucy" – plus "My Little Drum", "Christmas Is Coming", "Christmas Time Is Here", "Skating", and "Fur Elise". A surprisingly great early album from Jan Hammer – the keyboardist who went onto do some pretty drecky albums in later years, but who still has a surprising amount of sensitivity at this point! The session's a bit of a concept outing – recorded by Hammer after work in Mahavishnu Orchestra, but done in a personal, almost intimate style that's quite different than the overblown affair you might expect. Many tunes simply feature solo piano contemplating the themes, plus additional keyboards and synthesizer as the album moves on – and a bit of additional percussion and violin. Atco, 1968. Used ...
The long-teased, finally delivered joint full length from Jay-Z and Kanye West. It's impossible to consider the music purely on its own terms given the outsized personalities and absolutely gigantic presences of both – which makes it pretty fascinating. It's definitely not on the level of the best solo albums by either force, but it's probably a whole lot better than it's being dismissed as in some circles. Bottom line – it's worth picking up. We'll see how history treats it. Includes "No Church In The Wild" feat Frank Ocean, "Lift Off" with Beyonce, "Ni**as In paris", the single "Otis" with that reanimated Otis Redding vocal, "Gotta Have It", "New Day", "That's My B**ch", "Why I Love Yu" feat Mr Hudson and more. Cass has a rich, deep tone that's perfect – and Light is at his best here, but seems to get even more from the fullness of Preminger's presence – a mode that's a bit hard to describe in easy words, but which has the album crackling and bristling with energy throughout! Beginning-to-end, just as strong as Ace Of Spades or Overkill, and honestly, we might revisit this one even more than those, as it's just a tad underappreciated. A pivotal album from Iggy Pop – a set that's done with lots of fuzzy guitar production from Chris Stein, in a way that shows plenty of his influence on the music – but with a feel that's plenty Iggy overall! The record represents a strong bridge between the Bowie-produced years and that crossover sound that would make Pop huge at the end of the 80s – almost like he's trying out catchier hooks and bolder rhythmic patterns, yet without going for any commercial modes at all. There's a roughness to the whole proceedings that's really compelling – especially when Iggy tries to sing more than shout or speak – and titles include "Angry Hills", "Run Like A Villain", "Eat Or Be Eaten", "Bulldozer", "Platonic", "The Horse Song", "Street Crazies", and "Watching The News". The Roots return with their first album on Def Jam – a rich batch of soulful, heavier moods, cultural reflection, and some incredible modern Philly funk playing behind the thoughtful rhymes – probably the deepest album to appear on Def Jam in the past decade or so! Game Theory shares a tendency with their earlier masterwork Things Fall Apart in its way of applying an uplifting, riveting groove to tracks with some genuine hurt and despair. EMI/Cloud Forest (New Zealand), 1978/1981. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A double-length set of work from funky sitar player Ananda Shankar – and a collection that features 2 of his lesser-known albums from the 70s! Musical Discovery of India is a 70s musical tour of Shankar's homeland – performed with his sitar in the lead, and some very sweet soundtrack-style orchestrations in the back!! The style's a bit less funky than before, but still extremely evocative – as it blends Indian styles of instrumentation with more western approaches to soundtrack scoring and a bit of post-colonial travelogue! Titles include "Discovery Of India", "Akbar's Jewels", "Namaskar", "Kaziranga Beat", and "The Hill Train". Next up is Sa Re Ga Machan – a great bit of jungle exotica, composed as a full piece with an "atmosphere of twilight and the feeling of watching animals at a water hole" – but recorded with a sweeping soundtracky feel that makes it more like some lost 70s film gem in the best places! There's some nicely subdued funk in the mix – as Ananda's sitar grooves over guitars, keyboards, and compressed bass and drum parts, occasionally touched with modern exotica styles, as in the work of Mandingo. Titles include "Night In The Forest", "Jungle King", "Jungle Symphony", "Sa Ra Ga Machan", "Romantic Rhino", "Charging Tiger", and "Monkey's Tea Party". CD

The album's a messed-up funky party, with plenty of short little tracks that have a mix of funk, soul, and rock – perfect for the crossover crowd from whence Sly sprang, and who would become his biggest supporters into the 70s. And almost best of all, there's hardly any hits here – just tight little numbers that are as fresh today as they were back at the end of the 60s – all the kind of righteous funk the group could do better than anybody else! Concord, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
12 sublime spells from Esperanza Spaulding – with 4 more spells added to the mix for the physical release of the album! The record's got Esperanza really blowing us away – not content to just stay in the safer territory that she virtually invented a few years back, and which could sustain her entire career – and instead coming across with a mode that's more complicated, more edgey, and more message-oriented than ever before – all awash with a pastiche of sonic colors that's echoed by the image on the cover! Spaulding's vocals just seem to get better and better as the years go on – but she also leads strongly with her basslines on most numbers too – while the production really lets some of the more cosmic-styled elements flow around the edges. Titles include "12 Little Spells", "To Tide Us Over", "Til The Next Full", "Thang", "You Have To Dance", "Now Know", "All Limbs Are", "Readying To Rise", and "Dancing The Animal". Bonus "spells" include "Lest We Forget", "How To", "Move Many", and "Ways Together". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ SpiritTwelve Dreams Of Dr Sardonicus (Original Master Recording) ... CD
Epic/Mobile Fidelity, 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
The crowning achievement of Spirit – a wonderful blend of many musical strands at once – and a set so successful for the group, you probably could have found in any college dorm room in the early 70s! The record's really a cut above for their generation – an expansive effort that hangs together with a bit of a concept, and which interweaves strands of rock, folk, and a bit of jazz – yet also a record that has a lot more polish than other efforts of its type, and which trades a bit of psychedelic indulgence for a tighter focus that really lets the best tunes sparkle wonderfully! Production is great – clear, but trippy at the same time – and Randy California's guitar work has never sounded better. Titles include "Nature's Way", "Animal Zoo", "Love Has Found A Way", "Mr Skin", "Soldier", "Street Worm", and "Space Child". CD

✨✧ Talking HeadsFear Of Music ... CD
Sire, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really tremendous album from The Talking Heads – and a set that moves far past their already-great early records, to really show a rhythmic complexity we never would have expected! Brian Eno is helping the group in the studio again here, and the record really shows both David Byrne and Eno's late 70s fascination with global rhythms – elements that are often used in spare, simple little ways to really help inflect the tunes with a playful imagination that goes way beyond the colder post-punk and new wave of most of their contemporaries! The balance of previous aesthetics with these new grooves is wonderful – heard to great effect on the classic club cut "I Zimbra" – but brewing up strongly underneath on gems that include "Mind", "Paper", "Cities", "Life During Wartime", "Memories Can't Wait", "Air", "Heaven", "Animals", "Electric Guitar", and "Drugs". ✨✧ TurtlesYou Baby (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Sundazed, 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
A seminal second set from The Turtles – and a record that really has them sharpening up their sound! The songwriting is smarter than before, and the group's also developing the wit that would really set them apart from the rest of the west coast scene of the 60s – that mode of stepping back, taking a grander look at the music, and coming forward with a great sense of perspective in their sound! There's still a few folksy currents from before – but there's also some deeper, darker modes too – maybe a touch of Brit influence, ala Animals or Kinks – yet slightly lighter west coast too. Titles include "Down In Suburbia", "House Of Pain", "Just A Room", "I Know That You'll Be There", "Flyin High", "Pall Bearing Ball Bearing World", and "Give Love A Trial". CD

✨✧ War & Eric BurdonEric Burdon Declares War ... LP
MGM, 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
War became so popular on their own in later years that it's easy to forget how they first sprung onto the soul charts – here, in an album of many styles that was put together by the wayward Eric Burdon after the dissolution of The Animals. We have to admit that Burdon was a genius to hook onto the rich talents of this LA combo – even though he really didn't know what to do with them on this record. Part of the album's an homage to Roland Kirk, part is an extended reworking of "Tobacco Road", and part is an overly-long bluesy passage called "Blues For Memphis Slim". Fortunately, the record also includes the monster groover "Spill The Wine", one of the first big crossover tracks to popularize the Chicano funk sound of LA – and a great little groover that still hooks us in today. ✨✧ Robert WyattEPs (aka Box Of Eps) (5CD set) ... CD
Domino, 1980s/1999. Used 5CDs ... Out Of Stock
A very sharp 5CD set that brings together some of the best work that Robert Wyatt did during the 80s! This stuff is always criminally overlooked (perhaps because it's a bit subtler than his earlier stuff) – which is a shame, because it's fantastically beautiful, and filled with amazing moments of warmth, honesty, and creativity. The box is very nicely done, and a nifty treasure chest that includes tracks separated as Bits, Pieces, Work In Progress, Animals and Remixes and titles such as "Shipbuilding (Remastered Version", "Was A Friend", "Yesterday Man", "I'm A Believer (Previously Unreleased Extended Version", "Yolanda", "Amber & The Amberines", and the 19+ minute soundtrack to The Animal's Film and more. ✨✧ VariousBo Diddley Is A Songwriter ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s/1970s/1980s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Here's a compilation that's going after our hearts! As revolutionary as the oft-imitated Bo Diddley beat was in early rock & roll, he doesn't get the credit he deserves for the far reaching impact of his songwriting – having been covered by everyone from Buddy Holly, The New York Dolls, The Shadows Of Night, The Animals, The Pretty Things, Captain Beefheart, Los Lobos and so many more artists of all stripes over the years! This excellent set from Ace Records does a fantastic job of showing not only how far his influence reaches, but also how stylistically adaptable his tunes are. Swamp rock, proto punk, bluesy soul and more. Very well done and each cut is a keeper, with 24 tracks in all: "Bo Diddley" by Buddy Holly, "Crackin Up" by The Gants, "Pills" by New York Dolls, "Road Runner" by The Zombies, "Diddy Wah Diddy" by Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band, "Diddley Daddy" by The British Walkers, "You Don't Love Me (You Don't Care)" by The Birds, "Who Do You Love" by Ronnie Hawkins & The Hawks and many more. ✨✧ VariousChild Of Nature ... LP
Forager, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A record with a vibe that's as spare and lonely as the image on the cover – a set that features all sorts of really cool underground and indie tracks from the late 70s and early 80s – not punk or new wave music at all, but instead these really obscure, ethereal tunes that are kind of an unusual extension of the loner folk world of the generation before! Yet the music isn't folk at all – sometimes acoustic, sometimes electric – sometimes with looser song structures, but sometimes an occasional hook – recorded with nice currents of darkness that really make the collection work well together as a whole! Titles include "The Lost Road" by Doria, "Silvery Waterfalls" by Luellen Reese, "Child Of Earth", "Animal Talk" by Dana Alberts, "Child Of Nature" by The Key Of Creek, "Is This What You Like" by Terra, and "The Tribe" by The Fred Bloggs Band. A well-chosen batch of rare garage rock gems from the 60s – rare work from labels that include Stax, Fantasy, Original Sound, and Vanguard – including three never-issued tracks! The choice of material is great, and the whole thing features notes from producer Alec Palao – a name we've really come to trust for sets like this, which go way past the hits and obvious choices. Titles include "Can't Get Enough" by The Pullice, "Attention" by Lonnie Duvall, "Harmonica Man" by The Torquays, "Psychotic Reaction (unedited version)" by Count Five, "She's Gone" by Group B, "Double Whammy" by Jack Bedient & The Chessmen, "In The Night" by The Bittersweets, "Short Haired Fathers" by Circus Maximus, "Anytime Anywhere" by The Squires, "This Calls For A Celebration" by The Fantastic Zoo, "Rat Race" by The Tears, "I Can't Make A Friend" by The Vagrants, "The Animal In Me" by The Orfuns, and "The People In Me (full length version)" by The Music Machine. ✨✧ VariousImpossible But True – The Kim Fowley Story ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Incredible work from one of the maddest talents in rock and roll – the amazing Kim Fowley, one of THE most important forces on the LA scene of the 60s! Kim's known for many things – producer, arranger, musician, and insane performer – and this set really does a great job of bringing together all of those aspects – really getting at the "rockin hipster around town" persona that was Kim's calling card through over 3 decades of rock in the city. The package features 32 tracks in all – numbers that Kim recorded under his own name, or produced for other labels – all packaged with a stunning set of notes that's filled with stories, suspect history, and other dark chapters from the Kim Fowley past! Titles include "Animal Man", "Bubblegum", "The Trip", and "Space Odyssey" by Kim Fowley, "Wild Thing" by Cathy Rich, "Fallin Off The Edge Of My Mind" by The Seeds, "Pink Dominos" by The Crescents, "Honest I Do" by The Innocents, "Papa Oom Mow Mow" by The Rivingtons, "Like Long Hair" by Paul Revere & The Raiders, "Security" by N Betweens, "The Comedown Song" by Spider, "Popsicles & Icicles" by The Murmaids, and "Satans Holiday" by The Lancasters. Iron Mountain Analog Research (Australia), Late 50s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A set that's heavy on the kind of country artists who often made key appearances on TV in the 60s – artists who were as much visual showfolks as they were singers – with an illuminating quality that really holds through in their recordings, even if you can't see their images on the screen! The cuts here often have a very animated, well-presented approach – especially on some of the numbers that require a slight current of drama or wit to send the lyric home! The package features 18 titles in all – and tracks include "A Million Years Or So" by Roger Miller, "The Good Lord Giveth" by Webb Pierce, "I Am The Grass" by The Stonemans, "Wino" by Porter Wagoner, "I Wouldn't Buy A Used Car From Him" by Norma Jean, "I Could Have Gone Right" by Mel Tillis, "Oriental Twist" by Pete Drake, and "Loser's Cocktail" by Dick Curless. Mute, 1983. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Lots of layers of sound here – that raw electronic style of early Cabaret Voltaire, mixed with an increasing interest both in found sound samples, including some cool spoken bits – and in elements from a growing global soundscape as well! There's some unusual undercurrents to the music that almost reflect the Brian Eno/David Byrne experiments of the time – with elements that are much more exotic than before. And there's also occasional points that get a bit more tuneful – as if Mallinder or Kirk have finally decided they need a bit of vocals to hook folks into the music – although still at a level that's far from the electro pop of some of their contemporaries. Titles include "Over & Over", "Why Kill Time When You Can Kill Yourself", "Haiti", "Crackdownh", "Animation", and "In The Shadows". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ KinksPercy ... LP
Pye/BMG, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Sauveur MalliaSpatial & Co ... LP
Tele Music/Be With (UK), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A bass-heavy sound library set from the wonderful French composer Sauveur Mallia – a set that's really different than some of the thinner, more keyboard-heavy work of the period – although there's plenty of keyboards in the mix too! Some tracks definitely have that coming cosmic style that made the French space disco scene of the time so great – but those elements are also nicely complicated by Mallia's approach, not just when the bass gets funky, but also when it gets all low and moody too! The whole thing's totally great – a real standout from the legendary Tele Music label – with titles that include "Bass For Love", "Cosmic News", "Meteor One", "Star Odyssey", "OVNI Telex", "All The Bass", "Space Alert", and "Animals Bass". ✨✧ Modulo 1000Nao Fale Com Paredes ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A record with a very plain cover, but one that contains some of the most searing guitar work of the early 70s – the one and only album by a short-lived group from Brazil – one who mix Sabbath-style hard rock with some more experimental modes – all at a level that's completely unlike anything we can think of from the time! There's some really offbeat production twists that almost seem to be learned from the Tropicalia generation – although the music here is much more straightforward, and delivered with familiar guitar, organ, bass, and drums – familiar instruments that, as in the hands of some of the giants of the time, take on raw power and sounds of their own when pushed to their limits! Lyrics are all in Portuguese, but that hardly matters, given the instrumental intensity of the set – which includes the titles "Turpe Est Sine Crine Caput", "Nao Fale Com Paredes", "Metro Mental", "Animaia", and "Espelho". Motorhead tearing it up in the early 80s and arguably hitting their absolute peak – the final album with the classic trio lineup of Lemmy, Fast Eddie Clarke and Philthy Animal Taylor – capping off one of the most trailblazing periods for any band in rock & roll history! Iron Fist is as unrelenting and stubbornly gruff as the preceding Overkill and Ace Of Spades LPs, a loud and clear statement that this band was committed in full to the sound they created.
