Lou Donaldson — Alligator Bogaloo ... LP
Blue Note, 1967. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Excellent funky work from Lou – and a groundbreaking record that was the first to feature him playing on Blue Note with drummer Idris Muhammad – who is listed on the session under his birth name, Leo Morris! Muhammad gives the album that crackling funky bottom sound that instantly defined Lou's later years at Blue Note – a hard and heavy approach to soul jazz that's had incredible repercussions in the world of hip hop, as well as soul and funk. The rest of the group features soul jazz burners Lonnie Smith on organ, Melvin Lastie on trumpet, and George Benson on guitar – and the album includes the highly successful "Alligator Boogaloo", plus hard groovers "The Thang", "Aw Shucks!", and "One Cylinder".

Sandy Bull — Sandy Bull & The Rhythm Ace – Live, 1976 ... LP
Drag City, 1976. New Copy .... $14.99
One of coolest live documents of folk music adventuror Sandy Bull you could ask for – recorded at the Berkeley Community Theater in 1976 – with Bull playing the oud, on stage with early version of the TASCAM 4-track recorder, utilized here as his backing "band"! He dubs his tape machine The Rhythm Ace – with Bull playing the oud to pre-taped drum machine and bass, and talking to the audience about just what heck they're seeing and hearing. We don't know of the audience was in awe, dumbstruck or what – folk fellows didn't do this kind of thing on stage in '76 – which makes it all the more rewarding to hear 35+ years later! Sandy's musicianship is brilliant, and it's great fun to listen to him talk about his pal The Rhythm Ace, too. Includes "Oud", "Love Is Forever", "Driftin", "Alligator Wrestler" (with an intro) and "New York City" – plus a demo of his Rhythm Ace.

Chris Darrow — Artist Proof (plus bonus CD) ... LP
Fantasy/Drag City, 1972. New Copy LP & CD (reissue).... $19.99
A should-be Cali country rock classic by Chris Darrow – and a real rare gem of a record we'd put right up there with the best of its kind! Multi-instrumentalist Darrow might be best known to psych enthusiasts – as he was a founding member of Kaleidoscope – but as a session player, he's worked with an eclectic roster of major players that includes Frank Zappa, Gram Parsons, Leonard Cohen, Sly Stone, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and others. His solo work is akin to some other great, but better-known Cali country rockers, and honestly, we'd rate this record up against the aforementioned Mr. Parsons – it's really that good – but with more eclectic instrumentation. Catchy songs that are well sung and expertly-crafted – with Chris playing guitars, mandolin, dobro, fiddle and just about anything else with strings on it – and some light percussion, too! Other players include Ed Black, Loren Newkirk, Arnie Moore and Mickey McGhee – plus a sweet group of backing vocalists that includes Jennifer Warren. Titles include "Beware Of Time", "Lovers Of Sleep Abed Tonight", "Shawnee Moon", "Move On Down The Line", "Song For Steven", "Cocaine Lil", "Alligator Man", "Keep On Trying", "New Zoot", "The Show Must Go On", "The Sky Is Not Blue Today" and "We Can Both Learn To Say I Love You".
(Vinyl version includes the CD – which features the complete album plus 5 bonus demo versions.)

new Dissipated Face With Daniel Carter — Live At CBGB 1986 EP ... 7-inch
Roaratorio, 1986. New Copy (pic cover, reissue).... $7.99
Mindblowing punk and free jazz collision from Dissipated Face – with alto sax behemoth Daniel Carter blowing fiercely out front – a fast, brutal, yet defiantly musical quartet of songs recorded live in 1986 at the legendary Bowery club! This great 7-inch, 33 1/3 RPM EP has four killer tracks – with fast, bashed out guitars, furious rhythms and angry, aggro vocals – really cool underground stuff just on that level, but Carter's brilliant sax truly blows it into on amazing level. Titles include "Rock Is Dead, S**thead", "Nazi With A New Name", "Streets Of New York" and "My Life Is Like An Alligator".
(Picture sleeve designed by Raymond Pettibon.)

Various — Best Of Perception & Today Records – Compiled By DJ Spinna & BBE Soundsystem ... CD
Perception/BBE (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD .... $15.99 16.99
Amazing grooves from a legendary pair of labels – the ultra-funky Perception and Today Records, home of some killer sounds from the New York scene at the start of the 70s! The labels had a great ear for up-and-coming soul – especially with some of the younger groups rising up at the time – and they also used their magic to refresh the sounds of some older artists, particularly jazz musicians, who took on an ultra-funky approach at Perception – one that's made their work for the label some of the most in-demand over the years! Drums are heavy, bass is nice and fuzzy, and many of the cuts have a righteous sound that really takes off from the most progressive soul, funk, and jazz of the late 60s – pushing hard with an even heavier 70s vibe. Titles include "Brother" by Adam Wade & Johnny Pate, "Too Sad To Tell" by Debbie Taylor, "Chitlins & Chuchifritos" by Joe Thomas, "Naturally Good" by Bartel, "You & I" by Black Ivory, "I Can't Get No Higher" by The Eight Minutes, "You Owe It To Yourself" by JJ Barnes, "Get Some Of This" by Madhouse, "Honey Buns" by Bobby Rydell, "Gingele" by Astrud Gilberto, "One Life" by The Albert, "Surrender" by Black Ivory, "Wishful Thinking" by JJ Barnes, "You've Just Been Bitten" by Bartel, "Every Brother Ain't A Brother" by Joe Thomas, "Submission" by Tyrone Washington, "Boogie" by Bartel, "Alligator" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Rock Steady" by Julius Brockington, "Find The One Who Loves You" by The Eight Minutes, "A Possibility" by Wanda Robinson, and "Heritage Hum" by James Moody.

Various — Rojac Singles Box (8 X 7" box set plus 2 slipmats & T Shirt) ... 7-inch
Tay-Ster/Rojac, Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 8 x 7 Inch .... $54.99 59.98
A deluxe box set of rare Funky 45s on NYC producer Jack Taylor's Rojac and Tay-star labels – and featuring represses of key classic 45s, along with a bonus single with a new Kenny Dope edit – and a pair of 7" Rojac logo slipmats! It's a great batch of singles – featuring some largely lost, though legendary numbers by Big Maybelle, Third Guitar, Little Jewel, Damn Sam The Miracle Man, Chico Buddy and others. The set is well chosen to highlight the crème of the crop of Rojac and Tay-ster's releases from the late 60s to early 80s – with raw and slightly more tender soul singles, some wicked 70s funk, and a couple post disco groovers. Great stuff all the way! The box itself is nice, too, with a faux alligator skin texture and a handled fliptop lid. It includes seven old school Rojac and Tay-ster 45s – plus a bonus red colored vinyl 7" featuring a pair of Kenny Dope edits – and the twin Rojac slipmats. Titles include "Can't Wait Any Longer" and "Quittin' Time" by Big Maybelle, "A Thing Call The Jones" and "Can You Dig It" by Chico And Buddy, "I Want To" and "It Doesn't Matter" by Little Jewel, "Been So Long" and "Down To The River" by Third Guitar, "Damn Sam The Miracle Man" and "Give Me Another Joint" by Damn Sam The Miracle Man & The Soul Congregation, "I've Got It" and "Lucky Man" by Tolbert, "Are You Experience" and "Whip You" by Chuck-A-Luck & The Lovemen LTD. The bonus single is on red vinyl – and features a Kenny Dope edit of "Baby Don't Cry" by Third Guitar, with a flipside instrumental.
(8 X 7" singles plus 2 X 7" slipmats – in a nice looking, faux-alligator skin textured box. As an added bonus – for a limited time – we'll include a free Rojac t-shirt!)

new Dizzy Gillespie — Real Thing ... LP
Perception, 1970. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Stunning funk from the great Dizzy Gillespie – light years away from his early bop recordings! The album's a slammin batch of 70s instrumentals – Dizzy's trumpet firmly in the lead over electric backings that have more than a bit of funk in them. The bass is the main driving factor of the tunes – played either by Phil Upchurch or Chuck Rainey – and the tracks bounce along with a fierce and righteous groove that also includes hard riffing on guitar and some sweet piano lines. Players include Mike Longo, James Moody, and Bernard Purdie – and tracks include "N'Bani", "Matrix", "Soul Kiss", "Ding A Ling", and "Alligator". Great stuff, and a crucial album in Dizzy's lost career! Damn funky, too.

Don Ray — Garden Of Love ... CD
Malligator/Hot, 1978. Used .... $12.99
One of the coolest club projects of the 70s – a set of tracks based around the keyboards of Don Ray, but handled with lots of electronic disco touches from Cerrone! The pair are great arrangers on their own, but together they really make some magic – kind of a leaner take on the extended Cerrone groove – honed to a "t" in the studio, and sometimes given a nice punch with chorus vocals too. The tracks are shorter than you'd normally get from Cerrone, but still filled with all those freewheeling clubby grooves – warmly soulful undercurrents that make a great platform for the more electronic keyboards – never too cold at all, and a fair bit more personal than the sorts of keys we're used to hearing from the European scene. A really unique record – a partnership we wish worked together more like this, although we're plenty happy to have this treasure too! Titles include "Garden Of Love", "My Desire", "Body & Soul", "Got To Have Loving", and "Standing In The Rain".

new Guelewar — Touki Ba Banjul – Acid Trip From Banjul To Dakar ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $18.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the best material from Gambian psych funk pioneers Guelewar – a double-length collection, pulled from stellar albums of the late 70s and early 80s! Guelewar's got a really great sound here – one that brilliantly blends heavy, hypnotic rhythms, passionate vocals, swirling guitars and psychedelic organ grooves – all to create really unique vibe, and more than worthy of the legendary fame the group's gotten over the years! You might know Guelewar from their earlier work in the Supreme Eagles and Super Alligators – both great groups who prefaced the material here – infusing regional traditions with western funk, soul, and psych – to create a wicked groove that eventually evolved into the Guelewar sound! new Cerrone — Brigade Mondaine (140 gram vinyl pressing) ... LP
Malligator/Vinyl Lovers (Italy), 1978. New Copy (reissue).... $26.99 31.98 Out Of Stock
A rare soundtrack from the mighty Cerrone – recorded right at the height of his electro disco fame, and with a very similar groove! The film was also titled Vice Squad in the US market – and the music here definitely echoes the sleaze of its subject matter – with loads of sweet clubby lines that are heavy in the keyboard styles you'll know from "Supernature" – but maybe even leaner and meaner here – with a stripped-down punch that makes for plenty of funky disco moments! The tracks are mostly groovers, but even the few mellow moments are great – and titles include "Phonic", "Give Me Love", "Make UP", "The Loft", "Strip Tease", "Experience", and "Deauville".
