Kinks — Preservation Act 1 ... LP
RCA, 1973. Near Mint- .... $7.99
A major extension of the concept albums first begun by The Kinks with Village Green and Arthur – taken fully to the next level, and conceived as a theatrical work with a strong message-oriented base of songs! The vibe here is kind of an exaggeration of the "preservation" feeling of the "Village Green Preservation Society" single – carried out in a variety of dramatic rock styles that shift with the mood of the scenes, and which show Ray and the group working in Tommy-like spectacle , with a subsequent range of musical modes on the set. Titles include "Morning Song", "Demotion", "Sitting In The Midday Sun", "There's A Change In The Weather", "Where Are They Now", and "Cricket".
(Original US pressing. The lyric sheet is crumpled but included. Cover has some wear and tape and peeling on the spine.)

Wackie's Rhythm Force — African Roots Act 2 ... CD
Wackie's (Germany), 1982. Used .... $16.99
While the rest of the Jamaican music industry was transitioning to the digital sound, Bullwackie Barnes soldiered on, based in NYC, cutting fat slabs of wax with a heavy vintage sound. This side of dubs cut by his studio team that often included Leroy Sibbles, Jackie Mittoo and Junior Delahaye and based on rhythms used by Horace Andy and Max Romeo features a deep, dark sound and crisp, tight production, with a deft and subtle touch on the console. Cut years after the golden age of dub, but easily ranking up their with our favorite dub LPs. 10 cuts in all: "African Roots Act II Dub", "Revelation In Dub", "Goinna Fight Dub", "Journey Rock", "Lam's International Dub", "Mama Land Dub", "Lonely Dub", "Mystic Dub", "Sea Of Dub" and "African Man Dub".

new Loving Sisters & Love ActNew Day ... LP
ABC/Peacock, 1975. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Hip 70s gospel tunes from this female quintet – recorded with arrangements that have kind of an LA pop soul feel to them, almost in a soundtrack mode, but with some rawer touches. The girls have a deeply soulful approach to singing – with some nice rough spots around the edges that keep things real. Titles include "Find My Dream", "Old Home Town", "Slowly But Surely", "A New Day", and "Help Is On The Way".
(Cover has a bit of ring & edge wear with a small split on the bottom seam.)

new Willie Bobo — Hell Of An Act To Follow ... LP
Columbia, 1978. Used .... $6.99 Out Of Stock
Nice stuff from Willie – maybe not as hard and funky as his early 70s work, but very nice in kind of a Latin Club mode, thanks to some great production by Wayne Henderson! Includes his classic take on "Always There" – which is a great dancefloor jazz jammer – plus Henderson's groovy stepper "Keep that Same Old Feeling", and the tracks "Together", "Dindi", and "Pisces".
(Cover has light edge wear, with some marker on the front.)

new Coultrain — Wanderer/Balancing Act ... 7-inch
Record Breakin, 2010. New Copy (pic cover).... $6.99 Out Of Stock
The first we've heard from Coultrain in a long time – and damn, it's great to have him back! "The Wanderer" has all the spacey soul we loved in his debut album – really tripped out, cosmic soul that's totally great – beats that kind of crackle with electricity, as Coultrain's deep vocals echo out in this really haunting way! "Balancing Act" is warmer, and shows a whole new chapter of his talents – with some skittish percussion in the beats, and this upbeat feel in the lyrics that's totally wonderful!

Bugge Wesseltoft & Henning Kraggerud — Last Spring ... CD
Act (Germany), 2012. New Copy .... $14.99 15.99
A beautiful follow-up to the Snowing On My Piano album from pianist Bugge Wesseltoft and violinist Henning Kraggerud – and a really unique little album that strongly echoes some of Bugge's own solo work in recent years! Wesseltoft has really developed an even stronger sense of space as he's matured – and has this uncanny ability to use just a few notes, often very gently, and sometimes in halting ways – but all with the punch of a player who'd throw in a few dozen more notes in the same musical space – an incredibly quality that we've really come to admire in his playing, and which almost echoes some of the work of Satie or Gurdjieff – but with a more jazz-based approach. Kraggerud plays violin, viola, and viola concorda on the set – but often seems to move from Bugge's lead inspiration – creating some deeper colors with his own sustained notes. Tunes are all based around traditional themes, but really opened up in different ways – and titles include "Hei Hu", "Last Spring", "Byssan Lull", "Den Fyrste Song", "Blamann", "Om Kvelden", and "Wiegenlied".

Ashford & Simpson — Come As You Are (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1976. New Copy .... $10.99 11.98
A mid 70s winner from Ashford & Simpson – one of their earlier efforts, and a record that finds them fleshed out as a top notch act of their end – even if it'd be yeas before they'd net the kind of huge chart success that they deserved! Come As You Are is filled with solid soul with a sophisticated, expertly spun approach to production and arranging around the duo vocals – and the first rate songwriting that they'd provided for huge Motown stars like Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye. A couple tracks move more towards a dancefloor soul vibe that's pretty wonderful, and doesn't compromise the intimate soul vocals at the center. Titles include "It'll Come, It'll Come, It'll Come", "One More Try", "Believe In Me", "Caretaker", "Somebody Told A Lie", "Tell It All", "Sell The House" and "It Came To Me". This CD edition includes a couple remixes of the most club soul styled tune "One More Try" – the 12" disco mix plus a longer Dimitri re-edit!

Bang Girl Group Revue — Soul Shangri-La ... CD
Psychedelphonic, 2012. New Copy .... $6.99
A surprisingly great little set – one that definitely lives up to the retro feel of the cover, and which has a soulful sound we really didn't expect! The trio are more of a soul act than a girl group pop outfit – and they get some sharp backing here by a quartet of funk-steeped players who really help keep just the right sound for the record – a mode that has plenty of 60s soul touches in the instrumentation, which definitely seems to inspire the vocal performance as well! And even though the singers may look a bit stodgy on the front, they really know how to wail together – and really have a way of stretching out and soaring whenever one of them takes the lead. Titles include "Not Your Fool", "Another Notch On His Belt", "No Mater What You Do", "Make It For The Door", "Let Me Down Easy", "Hold On", and "Needle In A Haystack".

Beatles — Help (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Parlophone/Apple, 1965. New Copy (reissue).... $20.99 22.98
A great little record that's kind of a prequel for Rubber Soul – filled with short, tuneful tracks that would flower more deeply on that later album – and often served up with a bit more wit and adult consciousness than in any of the group's earlier records! Beggars Opera — Nimbus – The Vertigo Anthology ... CD
Vertigo/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD .... $18.99
A massive collection of work from Beggars Opera – Vertigo Records giants who work here with a heck of a lot of great work on organ! The set features a fair bit of music from each of the group's four albums – Act One, Waters Of Change, Pathfinder, and Get Your Dog Off Me – plus some single tracks too – all wrapped together as a 2CD set that really shows a great progression in the group's style – from tripped-out and jamming, to tighter and more song-based – yet always with a soaring sort of energy in the end. The keyboards alone have a strength to rival Rick Wakeman's best work for Yes – and titles include "Passacaglia", "Memory", "Raymond's Road", "Festival", "Impromptu", "Fox", "The Witch", "Pathfinder", "Sarabande", "Think", "Time Machine", "Lament", and "Working Man".

Black Ice — Black Ice (Montage) ... CD
Montage, 1982. New Copy .... $14.99 15.98
That's almost a hip hop cover on the front – one that would be years ahead of its time – but the record's a great batch of soul from this overlooked group! There's a tightness here that goes way beyond the previous album from Black Ice – a really top-shelf delivery all the way through – of the sort you'd expect to hear from a much bigger act at the time. The album's divided into two sides – a "lover's side" and a "dancer's side" – the latter of which features the band grooving in kind of an 80s club mode, with lots of bass pedals and a smooth funky sound that's not too bad. The real strength, though, is the lover's side – which is sort of an update of the 70s east coast harmony sound, given a smooth modern soul twist, but still retaining the best part of the vocal style, especially on the midtempo cuts. Titles include "I Just Wanna Hold You", "This Time", "Never Knew Love", "Big Fun", and the ode to designer jeans, "Sergios (I Want To Be With You)".

Bluefunks — HomeCookedTapeHissInfestedFunks ... CD
Bluefunks, 2010. New Copy .... $9.99
One man psychedelic funk jams from Blue and his Bluefunks project – bass player for the ATL's hip hop funk band (who backed Outkast live) – doing his own thing here on HomeCookedTapeHissInfestedFunks! Blue's heavy bass groove leads the way, boundlessly straddling genres and making his own style out of it all. He plays all the instrumentals on the set and does the singing – it's his show all the way. You hear his love of classic raw funk rock and psych soul throughout. Creative energy permeates the home spun vibe in away that reminds of Cody Chesnutt, but Blue's sound is all his own. "Nay...Na-Na", "Moments Golden", "See Thangz", "Act A Fool", "On The Wall", "Watcha Wanna Do", "Step It Up", "Feenin'" and more.

Anthony Braxton — Seven Compositions 1989 ... CD
Hat Hut/Hatology (Switzerland), 1989. New Copy .... $19.99
A very angular trio recording from Anthony Braxton – one that features drums from Tony Oxley and bass from Adelhard Roidinger – and a range of great reeds from Braxton! Oxley's presence is especially important here – as the set was recorded in that great late 80s stretch when he was really on fire – able to bring a really fresh range of sounds to work with a variety of players – amazing percussive elements from the drum kit, with angular energy that really matches Braxton's creative work on alto, soprano, sopranino, c-melody sax, flute, and clarinet! Roidinger's basslines often hold back, and kind of ground the set with a sonic depth – allowing Oxley to almost act more like another melody player. Titles include "Composition 40J", "Composition 40D", "All The Things You Are", "The Angular Apron", and "Composition 6".

Bronx Cheer — Bronx Cheer Was Here – Barrelhouse & Jugband Rock & Roll 1969 to 1973 ... CD
RPM (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $6.99
Wonderful work from the little recorded Bronx Cheer – which combined uptempo acoustic jug band rock with an uncommonly catchy brand of unique tunefulness – tunes from their wonderful debut LP on Dawn Records, plus some very nice stuff from the unreleased second LP! Bronx Cheer has roots in the jug band groove, with chiming acoustic guitars, tight rhythm and vocals with a little bit of a good natured twang, but their recordings show a willingness to plug in and rock out once in a while. 19 tracks in all: "Barrelhouse Player", "Prison Wall Blues", "Adult Games", "Springdale Blues", "Round & Round", "Fourth Street Mess Around", "Back Door", "Won't Act Right", "Ballad Of Reg Purvis", "Same Again", "Wild Cat", "Long Lovin' Night", "Life Is An Empty Box", "Midnight Mover", "Tell Me" and more!

Odell Brown — Free Delivery ... LP
Cadet, Late 60s. Very Good .... $11.99
After starting his career out with his funky group The Organizers, Odell Brown moved into a phase where he would act as the lead soloist in front of larger funky groups – like the one that appears on this record. The band was put together by Gene Barge, and they have a great soulful Cadet records sound – perfect for Brown's searing organ style. The solos are very lean, and have a nice nice strong quality to them. The band features Chisoul players like Morris Jennings, Henry Gibson, Louis Satterfield, Phil Upchurch, and Donald Myrick. A few tracks have ensemble vocals – and titles include "Nitty Gritty", "Free Delivery", "Come Together", "Free & Easy", and "Sign Of The Ram". Funky and hip!

Lenny Bruce — Interviews Of Our Times ... LP
Fantasy, Late 50s. Very Good+ .... $11.99
Not necessarily a record of interviews – as the title might make you think – but one of Bruce's best records for Fantasy! The album's got some very edgey bits that approximate his live material, and which take the best part of his cleaner act, and transfer them well to record. Titles include "Dijinni In The Candy Store", "Enchanting Transylvania", "Interview With Dr Sholem Stein", "The Interview", "All Broadway Musicals Sound The Same, Especially The Baritones", and "The March Of High Fidelity".

Byrds — Complete Columbia Albums (13CD set) ... CD
Columbia/Sony, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 13CD .... $74.99 99.98
Mindblowing music from The Byrds – and one of the greatest evolutions in pop music from the 60s! The Byrds were always at the forefront of their generation – starting out as a folksy act mixing in early psychedelia, then reaching for deeper roots with a love of country, yet also really keeping their own unique identity – and finding a way for most group members to grow their own interests and help shape the sound of the band! This balance is unique, as is the mighty range of records that encompassed it – their legendary sounds for Columbia Records, which are presented here in a beautiful box of 13 CDs, featuring 11 full albums, all with their original artwork in LP-styled sleeves! Titles include Mr Tambourine Man, Turn Turn Turn, Fifth Dimension, Younger Than Yesterday, Notorious Byrd Brothers, Sweetheart Of The Rodeo, Dr Byrds & Mr Hyde, Ballad Of Easy Rider, Untitled Unissued, Byrdmaniax, and Farther Along.

GC Cameron — Love Songs & Other Tragedies (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Motown/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1974. New Copy .... $13.99
A tremendous solo act from GC Cameron – a singer who first rose to fame in The Spinners, but who really sounds wonderful on his own! GC's moved away from The Spinners here – into a wide range of styles that show him ready to take on most of the rest of the competition! He's working here with the best of the best of Motown – production from Stevie Wonder and Willie Hutch – and arrangements by both, plus Paul Riser, Gene Page, James Carmichael, and Frank Wilson – all of whom really give their best to the record, and show that Motown was putting plenty of effort into making GC one of the next big stars of the 70s. We're not sure why things never took off as strongly for Cameron, but whatever the case, the album's a great step for the solo artist – on cuts that include "If You Don't Love Me", "Tippin", "All In Love Is Fair", "If You're Ever Gonna Love Me", "Come Get This Thang", "I'm Gonna Give You Respect", and "Let Me Down Easy". CD features an insane amount of bonus tracks – 13 more tracks that include "Act Like A Shotgun", "Girl I Really Love You", "I'm Gonna Get You (parts 1 & 2)", "Don't Wanna Play Pajama Games", "You Are That Special One", "Have I Lost You", "Time", "Topics", and "No Matter Where".

Doug Carn — Infant Eyes ... CD
Black Jazz/Snow Dog (Japan), 1971. New Copy .... $13.99 18.99
An undisputed 70s soul jazz classic – and arguably the best album that Doug Carn ever cut for the Black Jazz label! The set is a masterpiece of spiritual jazz – with Carn on keyboards setting up the groove, and wife Jean singing some incredible vocals – very different than her later soul work as a solo act, and with a vibe that's like Dee Dee Bridgewater at her soulful 70s best. Jean does a killer job with the album's classic vocal version of Bobby Hutcherson's "Little B's Poem" – done here with sweet lyrics that really open the song up a lot, and make it into an anthem of love and joy that we'd be hard pressed to match with any other tune! And all other tracks are great too – with titles that include "Moon Child", "Passion Dance", and a great version of Wayne Shorter's "Infant Eyes".

Caston & Majors — Caston & Majors (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Motown/Big Break (UK), 1974. New Copy .... $14.99
Majestic Motown from the 70s – an almost-overlooked record, but a surprisingly sophisticated gem that's well worth discovering again! The album's definitely soul at the core, but embraces so many other rich styles too – and at points, almost feels like some of the most ambitious material of the Cadet/Concept scene in Chicago – especially given the full orchestrations on the tracks, handled by Jimmy Haskell and Jerry Long! Leonard Caston's the real genius behind the record, though – and works here to provide great support for co-vocalist Carolyn Majors – who trades leads back and forth with him, and is sometimes showcased on tracks that really let her heavenly vocals take off! The whole thing's great – and titles include an early version of the cut "I'll Keep A Light In My Window", which was later recorded by other groups – plus "Child Of Love", "There's Fear", "Satisfied Mind", "Let There Be Love", "No One Will Know", and "Say You Love Me True". CD features loads of bonus tracks too – 9 more numbers that act as a great second chapter to the album – titles that include "Mother's Son", "What About The Price", "If I Can", "We're Together", "I've Got To Fly", "Don't Let", and "I'm Flying Your Sky".

Chapter 8 — This Love's For Real ... LP
Beverly Glen, 1985. Very Good .... $9.99
An obscure later album from west coast soul group Chapter 8 – recorded after Anita Baker had left the group to move out on her own, but done for the mid 80s Beverly Glen indie, where Baker had also gotten her start as a solo act! The set's got a feel that's smooth and sophisticated – tighter even than the group's 70s album on Mercury – and most of the tracks focus on mellow modern and more adult-styled soul numbers that showcase the vocals of singers Valerie Pinkston and Gerald Lyles. Titles include "How Can I Get Next To You", "Don't Stop Loving Me", "How Is It Possible", "Love Loving You", "It's My Turn", and "Don't You Think It's Time".

new Commodores — Natural High ... LP
Motown, 1978. Sealed .... $2.99
A pivotal album for The Commodores – still very funky here, with a sound that stays true to their roots – yet also able to reach out into some of the mature mellow ballads that would make them a huge crossover act in years to come! James Carmichael arranges and produces here – really helping the group to find that key focus, and make some important use of the vocals of Lionel Richie. Mr R steps out strongly on the crossover hit "Three Times A Lady" – but the whole group more than holds their own on the funky killers "X Rated Movie", "Fire Girl", and "I Like What You Do" – as well as the great mellow groover "Say Yeah".

About Time, 1979. New Copy .... $7.99 11.99
A great solo performance from Jerome Cooper – not just drums and percussion, but work on flute, balaphone, and other instruments too! Cooper really brings all of his most thoughtful elements into play here – working slowly, and covering space with ideas that really take some time to stretch out and find themselves – then confidently move forward to open up new chapters in the performance – a bit like some of the best early moments of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago, but presented here as a solo act! Side one features "The Unpredictability Of Predictability", in four movements – and side two features "Bert The Cat".

Elvis Costello — Get Happy!! ... LP
Columbia, 1980. Very Good .... $5.99
Elvis's first self conscious foray into soul, Get Happy pretty much runs the gamut of soul pop styles of the decade and a half that preceded it – and ultimately comes off as one of the most affectionate albums of Costello's career, and one of the most stomping blue-eyed soul albums of the 80s. The album includes a whopping 20 tracks: "Love For Tender", "Opportunity", The Imposter", "Secondary Modern", "King Horse", "Posession", "High Fidelity", "Riot Act", "Human Touch", "Beaten To The Punch" and more.

new Andrae Crouch & The Disciples — Soulfully ... LP
Light, 1972. Very Good- .... $5.99
They certainly got the title right on this one – as the album's one of THE soul/gospel crossover albums of the 70s – a masterpiece of majestic soul that's right up there with similar work from the time by Rance Allen and The Mighty Clouds Of Joy. Crouch's vocals are wonderful – as great as any secular soul act from the time – and the style of the album really soft-pedals the spiritual side of things to go for the soulful. Backing is in a nice small combo mode, and titles include "Everything Changed", "Satisfied", "Through It All", "Oh I Need Him", "I Come That You Might Have Life", and "It Won't Be Long".

Facts Of Life — Just The Facts – The Complete Kayvette Recordings 1975 to 1978 ... CD
Kayvette/Southbound (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD .... $21.99
A treasure trove of southern soul – the complete Kayvette Recordings of Facts Of Life – a really unique trio with a great talent for mellow songs about life, love, and messing around! The work was recorded in Muscle Shoals by Brad Shapiro and Millie Jackson – and it's often got the best qualities of Millie's own mellow work – not the upbeat tracks, but the laidback ones in which she tells a little story with her lyrics. But given the trio nature of the group, there's often some great interplay between the male and female vocals – in a way that reminds us a lot of The Soul Children towards the end of their run at Stax – when they really matured a lot, and used the male/female group format to really expand on older styles of southern soul. Shapiro's production is tight, but never overdone – often letting the vocals cup through the most strongly, even on some cuts that augment the grooves a bit. The 2CD package features both albums by the group – Matter Of Fact and Sometimes – plus material from singles too. 23 tracks in all – including "Sometimes", "Uphill Peace Of Mind", "Caught In The Act Of Getting It On", "Bitter Woman", "Did He Make Love To You", "It's Only A Matter Of Time", "Dr Feelgood", "I'm Way Ahead Of You", "Do You Wanna Make Love", "If You Can Give You Can Get", "Love Is The Final Truth", and "What Would Your Mama Say".

Five Star — Five Star (2CD deluxe edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/Cherry Pop (UK), 1990. New Copy 2CD .... $14.99
Bouncy, beat-heavy soul from Five Star – really stepping out strongly on this self-titled set! The music's nothing new, and very familiar to fans of mainstream soul at the time – but the group really serve things up with a stronger edge than on previous releases – handling much of the production and songwriting themselves, often with a catchy, hook-heavy style that reminds us a lot of projects from the Jackson family around the same time. Titles include "Treat Me Like A Lady", "I Can Show You Love", "Hot Love", "Feel Much Better", "I'm Still Waiting", "Don't Stop", and "Lost In You". 2CD set features lots of bonus tracks – including "Act One (7" version)", and a whopping four mixes of "Hot Love", and eleven more mixes of "Treat Me Like A Lady".

Five Star — Luxury Of Life ... CD
RCA, 1985. Used .... $9.99
Nice mid 80s UK pop soul from Five Star – sweet family act that's kind of in the mode that's a bit of an unofficial British answer to the cheery family pop soul vibe of groups like DeBarge and New Edition at the time – and a sweet one! Lean, lightly thumping synth soul backdrops and nice vocals from the group on some very catchy songs! Titles include "Love Take Over", "All Fall Down", "Let Me Be The One", "System Addict", "Hide And Seek", "RSVP", "Crazy", "Winning" and more.

Flaming Ember — Westbound #9 (Japanese pressing – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Hot Wax/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970. New Copy .... $26.99
A stone classic from Flaming Ember – a combo with a sound rooted in rock, but filled with plenty of soul too – making they a key funky crossover act in the early 70s! These guys borrow the best of Motown soul and the best of the jazzier rock groups of the time – and often use lots of raw congas in with their percussion – which keeps things grooving with plenty of soulful inflections. There's some nice psych production at times – a bit like the best Norman Whitfield modes at the start of the 70s – and titles include "Flashbacks & Reruns", "The Empty Crowded Room", "Going In Circles", "Westbound #9", "Spinning Wheel", and "Shades Of Green". CD features three bonus tracks – "Filet De Soul", "Don't You Wanna Wanna", and "Desert Village".

Funkees — Dancing Time – The Best of Eastern Nigeria's Afro Rock Exponents 1973 to 1977 ... CD
Soundway (UK), 1970s. New Copy Gatefold .... $15.99
Here's a group who definitely live up to their name – a damn funky 70s act from Nigeria, with a tight, righteous groove that's completely outta sight! The Funkees have an approach that's a lot more compact than Fela, and a lot more soulful than some of their more tripped-out contemporaries – and they also had some recording experience in London, which possibly gave them an even hipper focus – like some of the great post-colonial combos that were brewing up sounds on the British scene of the 70s! This wonderful package brings together the best of the group's work – their rare early Nigerian 45s, and key cuts from the UK albums – all with the incredible Soundway ear for a groove – meaning that The Funkees sound pretty darn funky all the way through. Titles include "Mimbo", "Dancing Time", "Break Through", "303", "Life", "Ole", "Akpankoro", "Abraka", "Acid Rock", "Slipping Into Darkness", "Point Of No Return", and "Dancing In The Nude".

Girls From Bahia (Quarteto em Cy) — Revolucion Con Brasilia ... CD
Discobertas (Brazil), 1968. New Copy .... $15.99
A rare American session from the Quarteto Em Cy – working here under the name of The Girls From Bahia, and singing in English as well as Portuguese! The album's got a sound that's quite similar to the group's classic 60s Brazilian records on Elenco – thanks to bossa-heavy backings from Oscar Castro Neves – and even when singing in a second language, the girls do a really great job of hitting the sweetest, warmest harmony notes they can – that trademark vocal brilliance that made them such a huge act back in Brazil! Sonny Burke produced, but he clearly gives plenty of space to Oscar – as the album's got little of his usual Warner touches – and instead shows that when you've got the right talent in the studio, you can do a pretty good job of recording bossa in the US. Titles include "Berimbau", "Tem Mais Samba", "Edmundo (In The Mood)", "Lai Ladaia", Morrer De Amor", "Sunny Side Of The Street", "Road To Nowhere", "Old Piano Roll Blues", "The Day It Rained", "E Nada Mais", "Manhattan", "Dindi", and "A Banda (Parade)".

Dexter Gordon — Night Ballads – Montreal 1977 ... CD
Uptown, 1977. New Copy .... $14.99 16.99
A great rare discovery from Dexter Gordon – a previously-unissued live set, recorded in Montreal in the late 70s – at a time when Dex was really hitting some new heights in his playing! Although the album coincides with a time when Gordon had returned to these shores, and was getting his act together on the New York scene, it's also got some of the looser, more open modes of his previous European live recordings – the stretched-out, constantly creative solos that always made all the long tracks from Dexter so great on those records. But almost even more uniquely, the album also preserves some of Gordon's spoken parts at the start of the tunes – that wry wit that always made him a compelling presence on the stage. The group also features George Cables on piano, Rufus Reid on bass, and Eddie Gladden on drums – and although the titles are familiar, they're all transformed in the hands of Dex – as you'll hear on "Lover Man", "You've Changed", "Old Folks", "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", and "LTD".

Chico Hamilton/Elmer Bernstein — Sweet Smell Of Success ... CD
Decca/El (UK), 1957. New Copy .... $12.99
A jazz soundtrack double-header – one that features both the small combo and larger band version of the soundtrack to The Sweet Smell Of Success! The first half of the CD features the Chico Hamilton Quintet's album of music – a wonderful bit of cinematic jazz from the 50s. The combo was a key part of the LA scene at the time, but are oddly featured as a regular club act in the movie's New York setting – but we'll gladly forgive that geographic error, given that the music on the set is so great. The quality's a bit like some of the Hamilton Quintet work on World Pacific – but there's a slightly freer, more urgent feel here too – work that's sometimes somewhat driving, and beautifully blended from the guitar of John Pisano, clarinet of Paul Horn, cello of Fred Katz, piano of Carson Smith, and drums from Chico. Side one features a lot of short incidental cuts – like "Susan", "Cheek To Chico", "Jam", and "Night Beat" – and side 2 is an extended "Concerto Of Jazz Themes From The Soundtrack Of Sweet Smell Of Success". The second half of the CD features the full orchestral version of the Sweet Smell Of Success soundtrack – but done in a style that's almost as jazzy and swinging as the small combo one! Elmer Bernstein's at the helm here – and the music's a wonderful pastiche of modes that's right up there with his sublime score for The Man With The Golden Arm – done in a similar blend of driving jazz, somber moments, and some slightly more raucous touches! As with that album, the players are all great – and soloists on the album include Pete Candoli, Ted Nash, and Shelly Manne – west coast players despite the New York setting of the film, and playing here with a fair bit of grit in their groove. Titles include "The Street", "Hot Dogs & Juice", "Toots Shor's Blues", "Nite Spot Rock", "Love Scene", and "Out Of Darkness".

Hot Peas & Butta X Big Pimp Jones — Kodoja – Terror Mountain Showdown (CD & 7inch) ... CD
Record Breakin, 2012. New Copy CD & 7inch .... $16.99
An inventive project from Hot Peas & Butta and Big Pimp Jones – one that's similar to some of the soundtrack-styled funk we've heard before from the latter act – but with a vibe that's definitely deeper, too! The music here is written for an imaginary thriller – based around a secret government project – and the results are quite similar to the grooves you might hear on some classic 70s soundtrack for a film with a equally-compelling plotline! Drums are heavy, and there's lots of bold deep funk energy at the core – but there's also some richer sounds too – touches of orchestrations here and there which really shade things in nicely, and make you feel like the record is more of a high-budget studio recording than a simple deep funk effort. Titles include "Terror Mountain Showdown", "Night Over The Harbor", "Battle In The Sky", "Epilogue Of Chaos", "Descending Upon Monsters", and "The Military's Kiss". Comes with a bonus 7" single – feature three more tracks not on the CD!

Jeanne & The Darlings/The Charmels — We're The Soul Girls – The Complete Volt Recordings ... CD
Stax (UK), Late 60s. New Copy .... $22.99
Two overlooked female soul groups from the legendary Stax Records – both brought to light on this excellent CD! Neither act ever issued a full album at the time – and instead, each cut a handful of singles, and some unreleased gems – which are all brought together here, in a package that's like finding a lost album from each group! Jeanne & The Darlings have a massively heavy sound – that great Memphis soul bottom that really makes the tunes hit hard – way harder than most other girl soul from up north, with that burning southern sound that made Stax/Volt legendary in the late 60s – a perfect fit for Jeanne's great lead vocals, which are plenty deep soul themselves. The package features their classic "Soul Girl", the unissued "I'm In Love With You" and "Changes" – and other single cuts that include "How Can You Mistreat The One You Love", "That Man Of Mine", "Hang Me Now", "I Like What You're Doing To Me", and "It's Unbelievable". The Charmells are a group with a sweet sound up top, yet a way of turning over a tune that often makes for an undercurrent of funk – a quality that's had the group sampled more than a few times over the years! This mix of sweet and deep is incredibly captivating – and a quality that makes them one of the best Stax acts of the 60s – finally brought to full light here with tracks that include "Please Uncle Same", "Something Sweet About My Baby", "Loving Material", "As Long As I've Got You", "Sea Shell", and "Baby Come & Get It" – plus unreleased gems that include "Peace Maker", "Someone Made You For Me", "Baby Hurry", "Let's Exchange Hearts", and "I've Done It Again".

Jelly Bean Bandits — Jelly Bean Bandits (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Mainstream, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $11.99
An incredible treasure from the late 60s underground – the one and only album from the Jelly Bean Bandits, a group who really should have been huge! These guys are hardly the sweeter pop act you might expect from their name – and instead, they've got a rock-solid sound that's very heavy on the drums – then followed up by some very sinister organ and guitar! Lead vocals from Billy Donald are really great – with a nicely dark undercurrent that stands with the bigger names of his generation, but which never falls into any sort of overindulgence. Most tunes are somewhat short, but pack plenty of power from the bottom on up – and titles include "Happiness Girl", "Country Woman", "Poor Precious Dreams", "September Rain", "Goodtime Feeling", "Tapestries", and "Say Mann".

Elvin Jones — Midnight Walk ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1967. New Copy .... $15.99
One of Elvin Jones' greatest records – a set that's quite different from both his work in the John Coltrane Quartet, and some of the powerhouse jazz sides he'd cut later as a solo act! The vibe here is a bit hard to describe, but it somehow comes together in the "midnight walk" of the title – as there's a pulsating rhythm to many of the numbers – one that comes partly from the record's great use of Dollar Brand on piano on some cuts. But other players are great, too – and there's some wicked electric piano work from Steve James – who really gives a few tracks a sinister edge – plus tenor from Hank Mobley, trumpet from Thad Jones, and added percussion from George Abend. Titles include "Midnight Walk", "HM On FM", "The Juggler", "All Of Us", and "Cross Purpose". A great album, and a real lost treasure from the Atlantic back catalog!

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings — I Learned The Hard Way (plus download) ... LP
Daptone, 2010. New Copy .... $13.99 15.99
The fourth album from Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings – solidifying what we learned pretty early on from the indomitable soul spirit that is Sharon and her impeccable combo the Dap-Kings – it's that this is not some retro soul revival novelty act, what they are is the greatest active embodiment of a true soul sound that will never go away! We've always loved that Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings recognize the studio and the stage as different worlds. On stage, Sharon is the possibly the most energetic, charismatic presence you'll ever see and the band brings heft and heat. In the studio, they stretch out and diversify wonderfully, bringing both raw, unpolished funky soul realness to some more stripped down numbers and a full on Stax or Hi level heaviness to the bigger ones. The songs are better and more memorable than ever on this record – with "The Game Gets Old" and "I Learned The Hard Way" (an astoundingly strong one/two punch for the opening minutes) plus "Better Things", "Give It Back", "Money". "The Reason", "Window Shopping", "I'll Still Be True", "Without A Heart", "If You Call" and "Mama Don't Like My Man".

Philly reissues don't get any better than this! 2 of the Jones Girls' classic albums for the legendary Philadelphia International label – back to back on 1 CD, with an extra bonus cut as well! The Jones Girls were probably one the best female act to ever hit the Philly International stable – and took the older girl group mode of the Philly scene firmly into the modern soul era, with a warmly-crafted, post-disco style that was about as classy and sophisticated as you could get for girl group soul! Both albums are a delight, and the CD's running over with great tracks that include "This Feeling's Killing Me", "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else", "I'm At Your Mercy", "Children Of The Night", "At Peace With Woman", "I Just Love The Man", "Life Goes On", and the bonus cut "Eternally"!

Kashif — Condition Of The Heart ... CD
Arista, 1985. Used .... $9.99
An 80s soul classic from Kashif – an artist who really helped transform R&B at the time, all without the benefit of a last name! The album's completely arranged and produced by Kashif himself – cementing the reputation he'd begun working behind other artists in the earlier part of the decade before going onto greater fame as a solo act on his own – a rock-solid approach to soul music that bristles with the best innovations of the 80s soul generation. Most tunes are heavy on beats, but use them in just the right ways – and keyboards provide a good amount of the rest of the instrumentation, but fleshed out strongly so that they work well next to the vocals. Tunes are a nicely balanced blend of mature male soul and some slightly catchier groovers – and titles include "Botha Botha", "Dancing In The Dark", "Movie Song", "Say You Love Me", "Stay The Night", and "Condition Of The Heart".

King Curtis — Live At Small's Paradise ... CD
Atco (Japan), 1966. New Copy .... $15.99
A great little live set from King Curtis – cut in his local turf of Harlem, with a very loose sort of feel and nice gritty groove – which lets both King and his combo get even freer and funkier than usual! There's an edge here you don't usually get on the studio work from Curtis – or at least the material you'd find on other 60s albums from the same stretch – which often just featured sax instrumental reworkings of pop hits. Instead, this cooker has King's horn working in a cool combo with keyboards from Paul Griffin and guitar from Cornell Dupree – really all coming together as a tight funk act, and more in the mode that you'd find on some of King's overlooked b-sides from his Atco singles. Titles include "Philly Dog", "Tough Talk", "Soul Theme", "Something On Your Mind", and "Pots & Pans".

Sure, they're a funk act – but Kool & The Gang also have a great way with a ballad, too – and as the 80s moved on, the laidback mode worked just as great for the group as their groovers! This mellow set features a dozen Kool & The Gang ballads – some gentle love songs that still seem to hold onto the compression we love in their funk – yet turn the energy towards different ends, often without being overly commercial. Tracks include "Strong", "Think It Over", "Jones Vs Jones", "September Love", "No Show", "Cherish", "Broadway", "Too Hot", "Just Friends", and "Special Way".

Krystol — Talk Of The Town (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Epic/FTG, 1985. New Copy .... $14.99
Bumping, bouncing soul from Krystol – one of the strongest female groups of the 80s, and one of the few who really helped push the sound further at the time! The groove here is equal parts funk and soul – and has a brashness that a girl act wouldn't have had a decade before – lots of echoes of new rhythms learned from the streets, fused with top-shelf production that helps send the whole thing home strongly! The style is tight, yet never clunky commercial – and Leon Sylvers' production really helps keep a lean quality to most of the tracks. And sure, the costumes on the cover look a bit silly, but the vocals have a lot more depth than you might expect! Titles include "Love Is Like An Itchin In My Heart", "C'Est La Vie", "I Want A Man Who Can Dance", "Hard To Believe", "The Things That Men Do", "Talk Of The Town", and "Shattered Glass". A late 70s gem from Patti Labelle! Although the album's recorded right in the height of the disco years, Patti's really shining on the mellower cuts – hitting a serious soulful side that shows that her move to a solo act really let her move into more sophisticated material. There are definitely some dance tracks like "Music Is My Life" but the real highlights are mellow tunes like "What'cha Doing To Me" and "You & Me". Other titles include "It's Alright With Me", "Love & Learn", "My Best Was Good Enough", and "Deliver The Funk". A killer of a mid 70s album from Hector Lavoe – recording here as a solo act after his split from the Willie Colon group, but still with strong backings and musical supervision from Willie himself! The style here is very similar to the last few albums Lavoe recorded with Colon – a brilliantly bouyant mix of samba and soul, carried off with increasing sophistication few might have expected from the pair's early years, and a depth of feeling that clearly made Hector one of the most important Latin singers of the 70s. Titles include "Tanto Como Ayer", "Vamos A Reir Un Poco", "Consejo De Oro", "De Ti Depende", and "Mentira".

One of the strongest early albums by the Ramsey Lewis Trio – especially because it features some great original material! The group – with the usual Redd Holt and Eldee Young lineup – is augmented by Chris White on a few tracks, who plays bass while Young switches to cello, an instrument that he played better in jazz than just about anyone. Apart from the group's great title reading of Cannonball Adderley's "Barefoot Sunday Blues", the record also features original tracks "The Train Won't Wait", "Come On Baby", "I Spend My Life", "Act Like You Mean It", "Salute To Ray Charles", and "Don't Even Kick It Around". Lijadu Sisters — Danger ... LP
Knitting Factory, 1976. New Copy (reissue).... $17.99 19.99
Amazing work from the 70s Nigerian scene – and one of the few female funk records to come out of Africa back in the days! The Lijadu Sisters have a groove that's unlike anything else we've ever heard before – partly Afro Funk, but often changed up a lot in really weird ways – rhythms that get a bit complicated, yet still have a straight ahead punch – taken to new areas by the playful back/forth singing style of the sisters! Their vocals are amazing, sweet, but kind of eerie at times too – almost reminiscent of ESG in the early days – and with a similar style that's infectious right from the start! The whole thing's essential work from an overlooked 70s Afro Funk act – and titles include "Danger", "Cashing In", "Bobby", "Life's Gone Down Low", and "Amebo".

Los Po-Boy-Citos — Hasta ... CD
Superultramega, 2013. New Copy .... $11.99
Wonderful work from this New Orleans combo – a Latin act that feels like they'd be much more at home in the Spanish Harlem scene of the 60s, especially given the soulful undercurrents of this set! On previous releases, the group already showed a great talent for crafting just the right sort of classic Latin groove – tight percussion and sharp instrumentation, all honed down with the rhythms in a way that really carried a strong old school punch. But this time around, they've got all that and more – a stronger Latin soul spirit than before, which really comes through in the pacing and presentation of the songs – holding back sometimes to give the listener more, in ways that few young Latin groups seem to get! The style is wonderful – and in addition to older New York modes, these guys bring in a few other elements as well – always without any hoke or gimmick at all. Titles include "Dejame", "Mary Wants To Boogaloo", "Oye Mamacita", "Hasta", "Sad Eyes", and "Swahili Baby".

Main Ingredient — Spinning Around – The Singles 1967 to 1975 ... CD
RCA/Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $15.99
Some of the greatest work ever by The Main Ingredient – a selection of their singles for RCA records from the late 60s and early 70s – but one that goes way past just the hits, in order to fully trace the evolution of their heavenly vocal style! The trio started out as an already-great harmony act in the late 60s – a group who were even sweeter and more soaring than some of their contemporaries – making them perfectly placed to move into some of the more righteous harmony modes of the 70s – including some surprising turns towards more righteous, political material. The 22 track package is the greatest we've ever seen on the group – 15 pages of deeply detailed notes, in true Ace/Kent mode – plus singles that include three by The Insiders, "I'm Better Off Without You", "If You Had A Heart", and "I'm Just A Man" – as well as Main Ingredient singles that include "Black Seeds Keep On Growing", "California My Way", "Magic Shoes", "Everybody Plays The Fool", "You've Got To Take It If You Want It", "Girl Blue", "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend", "I Was Born To Lose You", "Brotherly Love", "You've Been My Inspiration", "I'm So Proud", "Spinning Around", "I'm Leaving This Time", "Rolling Down A Mountainside", "The Gold Old Days", and "Shame On The World".

new Mask Man & The Agents — One Eye Open ... LP
Dynamo, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
An excellent bit of rough-edged funk – and a real precursor to musical party records of the 70s! Harmon Betha is the "Mask Man", and he's working here with his Agents – a very popular live act at the time, with a mixture of raunchy grooves and blue humor, ala Doug Clark & The Hot Nuts, but perhaps a bit cleaner. The classic track on this one is "One Eye Open", which has a nice drum part and a great groove – but the whole album's a great set of hard soul numbers that take off in kind of an indie Sam & Dave funky kind of way. Titles include "Love Bandito", "Roaches", "It's The Thing", "In a Crowded Station", and "Wigs".

MC Squared — Tantalizing Colours – The Reprise Recordings ... CD
Reprise/Now Sounds (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy .... $13.99
Glittering sunshine pop throughout! MC Squared has a name that may sound like a weak late 80s crossover rapper, but the group's a killer harmony act from late 60s Reprise Records – produced to perfection by Lenny Waronoker, and given the same mix of tight studio and hip undercurrents that you'd find in the hippest of the late 60s Warner generation – that slightly sinister edge that can always make LA pop of the time go a lot deeper than you might expect! This package is a true treasure trove of the group's work – their one full album for Reprise, plus bonus tracks from singles – all with a sound that you'd stack proudly next to work by artists like Roger Nichols or Paul Williams at the time. Titles include "The Dolphins", "Adults Only", "Bornatzatt", "Ghost Of Man", "Miss Abercrombie", "Do You Care", "Smilin", "Karneeval", and "Tantalizing Colours". Bonus tracks include "Or Something", "SST", "My Mind Goes High", "Smilin (mono)", and "Time Will Equalize".

new Moments — Moment With The Moments ... LP
Stang, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Sweet sweet sweet soul from The Moments, and one of their rare early albums for the Stang label! The tracks are all beautiful New Jersey harmony soul, of the sort that The Moments and others put on the charts in a large way during the early 70s – and the band's smoothing their act up a bit, but still has some of the roughness that makes the best New Jersey soul albums so compelling! Of course, Sylvia Robinson probably had something to do with that – as she was still just hitting her stride in the studio – finding a great way to present the group with all the fragility of their earliest years, but also a bit more punch than usual. Titles include their hit "Love On A Two Way Street", a surprisingly great cover of "Rocky Raccoon", and other nice ones like "So This Is Our Goodbye", "I Do", "Key To My Happiness", and "Lovely Way She Loves".

Mushroom — Oh, But They're Weird & They're Wonderful ... CD
Normal/Return To Sender (Germany), 2002. New Copy .... $11.99
The second outing from this west coast, tripped out, drugged up, funky jazz act – and arguably better than their first! The album's got a sound that will appeal to fans of the more progressive end of grooving – with plenty of long tracks that have the band jamming in a kick-back mode that's reminiscent of the style of some of the European jazz rock groups of the early 70s. Titles include "Sonia & Sony", "What's The Deal With Q?", "Brian Felix & The Trinity", "Are We Being Taped?", "Theme Song For Stereo Steve", and "4 Men With Beards".

Alicia Myers — Alicia/Alicia Again ... CD
MCA/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1981. New Copy .... $14.99
The amazing legacy of Alicia Myers – two classic MCA albums, back to back on a single CD! First up is the self-titled Alicia – a set that's right up there with Myer's recordings with the group One Way, but with some deeper, more personal touches as well! Production is by Kevin McCord and Al Perkins from the One Way camp – and they bring in a nice mix of the funkier numbers that group was known for, and some warmer, mellower cuts that really show Myers maturing as a soul singer – a depth that might not have been expected a few years before, and which should have made her a bigger act for years to come after this wonderful set! The setting really lets Alicia open up on vocals, singing with a power and presence that's really great – and titles include "We Can't Stay In Bed Forever", "Don't Stop What You're Doin", "I Want To Thank You", "If You Play Your Cards Right", "Reggae Funky Dance", "Reservation For One", and "Life Joy & Happiness". Alicia Again is equally great – and has a strong smooth midtempo groove – with the beat toned down a bit from earlier days, in a style that works perfectly for Alicia's voice. A perfect bit of soul for that warm Sunday afternoon in the fall – king of similar to Chaka Khan's great solo work on Warner from the same time. Titles include "When Love Starts To Go", "I'm So Lonely", "Love Me Or Leave Me Alone", and "Do Your Kind Of Dance".

Stanley Myers/The American Breed — No Way To Treat A Lady ... LP
Dot, Late 60s. Very Good+ .... $9.99
Stanley Myers could always do a pretty great job with a soundtrack when he wanted to – and this little gem is a perfect example of his talent! The album mixes dramatic themes with groovier numbers – the best of which use electric bass at the bottom of larger orchestrations to create a slow, syncopated groove that's more than a bit funky – at times, almost in a Serge Gainsbourg/French pop sort of way. The album includes the vocal number "A Quiet Place", sung by the American Breed, plus the tracks "St Matthew Fashion", "The Fifth Victim", "Kate Comes On", "Alpert Memorial", "Kate's Place", "Nail Him", and "The Last Act".

Mystic Merlin — Full Moon (with bonus track) ... CD
Capitol/Big Break (UK), 1982. New Copy .... $14.99
A standout classic from one of the all-time overlooked greats – the sublime Mystic Merlin, a group who cut a handful of killers in the early 80s! The group's biggest claim to fame is a young Freddie Jackson on vocals – but they're honestly much more an ensemble act than a backup for a lead star – and have this wonderfully-crafted blend of soul, jazz, and funk that never lets up – a really sophisticated groove, yet one that still knows how to be straight ahead and funky too! This classic set is wonderful all the way through – far from cliche, and head and shoulders above most of their contemporaries – with a wonderful array of grooves that includes the killer cut "Mr Magician", plus "Your Love", "Rock The World", "Full Moon", "Back To Zero", "Mindreader", and "Love Is What You Need". CD features a bonus single version of "Mr Magician".

Ohio Players — Skin Tight ... LP
Mercury, 1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $9.99
Great work from the Ohio Players – and proof that moving to a big label could be a good thing for a funky group! This was the band's first album for Mercury – and although one might have the temptation to say that the label cut down the radical funk sound of the trippy Westbound years, the move also taught the band to sharpen up their act, and get out of the repetitive sloppy groove into which they'd been lapsing during the past few years. The record's a lot smoother than earlier work – with a polished funky sound that would soon push the band right up there with Earth Wind & Fire at the top of the soul charts. And although there's familiar funky numbers like "Skin Tight", "Jive Turkey", and "Streakin Cheek To Cheek" – the best moment on the entire album is the wonderful spacey soul number "Heaven Must be Like This", a seven minute mellow groover that's got a sophisticated jazzy soul style, with voices and piano soaring into the heavens, in a way that always still sends chills down our spine! That cut shows the band's tremendous growth – and it's one of their best-ever!

Owiny Sigoma Band — Power Punch ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2013. New Copy .... $15.99 17.98
An album that definitely packs a powerful punch – thanks to a compelling blend of sounds from both London and Kenya, brought together in a whole new formation of African groove! The album's a wicked reworking of an older aesthetic – in a spirit that's similar to the really inventive changes that Tony Allen brought to his music on the Paris scene in the late 90s – but with a fresh, crisp sort of energy that really lives up to the group's placement on the Brownswood label! Electric and acoustic elements are wrapped together beautifully – so that both act very organically in the music – and the vocals work in a similar way – never totally out front, but instead a strong part of this wonderful hybrid. Titles include "Sunken Wrecks", "Owiny Techno", "Norbat Okelo", "Nagalo Ni Piny Odag", "Yukimwi", "All Together", and "Jonny Ra Ha".

Nicola Piovani — Marcia Trionfale ... CD
Quartet (Spain), 1976. New Copy .... $22.99
A great little soundtrack for the film Marcia Trionfale – composed by Nicola Piovani – one that deftly blends some disparate moods! The film combines an Italian military barracks setting with forbidden romance, which you'd think would be a difficult juggling act for the composer – but he pulls it off masterfully! The main revolving theme is incrediby melodic and memorable, too, making this one well worth this first time CD release! Includes "Marcia Trionfale", "Naja", "Un Fante Quando E Morto Fa Ancora Tre Salti", "Military Music", "Violenza Privata", "Riuscire Con L'Audacia", "I Poeti Dell'Odio", "Madrepatria", "Pizzapop" and "Epilogo Trionfale".

Pleasure — Future Now ... LP
Fantasy, 1979. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $9.99
A wonderful album from Pleasure – one of the few jazz funk bands who actually seemed to get better and better the more they recorded! Unlike some of their contemporaries, who kind of lost their edge when the production got slicker, Pleasure actually picked up more of a beat, and tightened up their act in a way that made for some of the funkiest and most soulful moments of their career. You can hear that well on the cut "Space is the Place", which has great funky drums on the intro; on the mellow "Thoughts of Old Flames", a real stunner with a great moody feel; and the classic "Glide", a great dancefloor groover that still stands up well!

new Public Image Ltd — Public Image – First Issue (2CD deluxe edition) ... CD
Virgin/Light In The Attic, 1978. New Copy 2 CDs Gatefold .... $15.99 16.98
The bracing debut of Public Image Itd! First Issue is seriously one of the most stunning post punk albums of its time – and we think it's light years ahead of the Sex Pistols in terms of boundless creativity and originality. Given that the Pistols disintegrated mere months before First Issue was issued, this album is all the more amazing for how hugely different Public Image is – different from Lydon's own earlier revolutionary punk act and different from absolutely everything else on the late 70s landscape. The dissonant, driving post punk guitars and sneering vocals are recognizable, sure, but the dubby textures and more angular touches are so far outside the box and so hugely influential that it's hard to fathom myriad underground rock acts existing without it. Vital! This excellent 2CD expanded edition from Light In The Attic includes an hour long BBC interview from 1978 – and if you know anything about Mr. Lydon, you know that he's one hell of an interview – plus the rare B-Side "Cowboy Song". Other titles include "Theme", "Religion", "Religion II", "Annalisa", "Public Image", "Low Life", "Attack", "Fodderstompf" and a more.

Ripple — Sons Of The Gods (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Salsoul/Octave (Japan), 1977. New Copy .... $26.99
A really rich second album from Ripple – a group who took awhile to return to the studio, but really developed a lot in the process! The combo started out as a straight funk act – but here, they really take off with a tight approach to their instrumentation – razor-sharp work on guitar, keyboards, bass, and percussion – soaring off into the clouds with energy that more than matches the image on the cover! Given their Atlanta roots, there's a vibe here that's a bit like some of the best Tommy Stewart material of the time – and Floyd Smith produces the group on the record, really finding a great way to blend everything together, but without ever losing an edge! Titles include the club classic "The Beat Goes On and On" – plus "Sons of The Gods", "Do What You Wanna Do", "Here I Stand", "Call Me Traveling Man", and "Victorious". CD features bonus tracks – "The Beat Goes On & On (orig Jim Burgess 12" mix)", "The Beat Goes On & On (orig single version)", and "Today (orig single version)".

One of the strongest albums by Rockie Robbins – and they're all pretty darn great – thanks to some sweet production and arrangements from the team of Skip Scarborough and Jerry Peters! Skip and Jerry bring a nice sense of smoothness to Rockie's Chicago-forged sound – expanding his sound with fuller arrangements than before, and creating a style here that's tight and professional, yet never slick or poppy. Titles include "Time To Think", "I Believe In Love", "My Old Friend", "Look Before You Leap", "Give Our Love A Chance", "An Act Of Love", "I'll Turn To You", "For You For Love", and "Talk To Me".

Also, the scrapbook of Black punk legend Neon Leon, a Clancy Eccles tribute, hundreds of novelty celebrity records profiled, and a history of Diabolik. Seung-Hee — Waiting ... CD
Seung-Hee, 2007. New Copy .... $13.99
Lovely work from vocalist Seung-Hee – a singer who really knows how to stretch out, even on more familiar numbers – finding an expressive space that makes her voice come across almost more like an instrument at times! Backing here is by a quartet with piano and tenor, but Seung-Hee's vocals almost act like another instrumental force – given her great sense of inflection, wonderful timing, and strong sense of tone – way more than just standard jazz vocals, and instead a style that's right up there with the revolutionary early best by Sheila Jordan and her contemporaries. Titles include a good number of originals – "Fly Away", "The Place We All Start", "Snow Day", "Waiting", and "The Unknown" – plus versions of Stevie Wonder's "Blame It On the Sun" and Cole Porter's "So In Love".

An amazing funky record cut by the American tenor player Hal Singer while he was living in exile in Paris! Although the bulk of Singer's other work is more traditional R&B sax material, this LP has a very good raw funky feel, with some nice tight guitar and organ grooves that spur Singer on to new heights. Manu Dibango sits in on the session on organ and tenor, and the set includes a huge number of funky classics like "Saturday Night In Watts, Act One", "Paris Soul Food", "Malcolm X", and more!

new Slave — Concept ... LP
Cotillion, 1978. Very Good .... $4.99
A key early classic from Slave – as the set features the group's first work with drummer Steve Arrington, who not only opened up their rhythmic concept, but also gave them a great new sound on lead vocals! Arrington's approach here is very much in the spirit of Slave's first 2 records – a lean, mean approach to funk that never goes too far over the top, but which also has a wide-open sound that's instantly appealing – and which makes Slave as much of a top-shelf soul act as they are a funky combo. Great all the way through – with a tightness and on-the-money sound few others can match – and featuring the cuts "We've Got Your Party", "The Way You Love Is Heaven", "Just Freak", "Coming Soon", "Drac Is Back", and "Stellar Fungk".

Gary Sloan & Clone — Harmonitalk ... CD
Cache Cache/B- Music, 1980. New Copy .... $14.99 15.98
Mighty weird electronic sounds from Gary Sloan and Clone – an Alaska act from the start of the 80s, working with a really unique mix of styles that includes some electrified harmonica on most tracks! The core sounds are in more familiar electronic territory – Fender Rhodes, Arp, moog, and other keyboards – and the harmonica, which is often processed, turns out to be a surprisingly great fit for these instruments – especially when combined with a vocoder, and some of the album's many special effects! The album's way more than just a novelty set – and has this sublime sound that's surprisingly appealing – both to fans of early 80s electro pop, and to lovers of unusual analogue electronic experiments too. new Soulful Strings — Another Exposure ... LP
Cadet, 1968. Very Good+ .... $6.99
Hip hip stuff from Richard Evans and the gang at Cadet Records! The record is the second outing by The Soulful Strings – a group that kind of started as a studio side project, but who became a surprisingly popular act during the late 60s. The album includes some excellent original tunes by Evans – including "Soul Message" and "The Stepper", the latter of which is virtually a blueprint for the jazzy stepping groove that's always been a hit on Chicago dancefloors. A wonderful mix of strings, flute, organ, and more – all with a strong rhythm section that keeps the whole thing soulful and grooving! Sugarman Three — What The World Needs Now ... CD
Daptone, 2012. New Copy .... $13.99 14.99
The return of the great ones – and quite possibly the funkiest album ever from The Sugarman Three – a crowning achievement for this funky combo that we've loved for years! The core trio is still in place – soaring Hammond, tight tenor, and heavy drums – but they've also added in some extra help from the Daptone universe – which helps the group hit an ultra-funky sound here – one that's sharp-edged, no-nonsense, and a wicked blend of soul jazz and late 60s funk! There's still plenty of standout tenor solos from Neal Sugarman, and wicked organ lines from Adam Scone – but there's also a bit of added trumpet, and great Bosco Mann basslines – which really give the whole thing a heavy punch. The groove is much more stripped-down and hard-edged than the Dap-Kings – and burns with a fire that never lets up for a minute – proof that in a world of funky revival combos, some of the older act still do it best! Titles include "Mellow Meeting", "Dirty Water", "Rudy's Intervention", "Your Friendly Neighborhood Sugarman", "But It's Alright", "Witch's Boogaloo", "Brother T", and "Love Went Away".

Sylvers — Showcase/New Horizons ... CD
Capitol/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1976/1977. New Copy .... $15.99
Two gems from The Sylvers – back to back on a single CD! Showcases is filled with great groovers from The Sylvers – a set cut when the group were firmly in their disco years – a great setting for their playful family-style vocals! In fact, moving to disco may well have been one of the greatest things the group could have done – because it really set them apart from the rest of the pack, and helped them find a way for their maturing vocals to really stretch out! Foster, Leon, Angie, and the whole Sylvers gang sound mighty great here – as they groove hard on their classic "Boogie Fever", plus other tracks that include "Ain't No Good In Goodbye", "Free Style", "I Can Be For Real", and "Ain't Nothin' But A Party". New Horizons is hard grooving work from The Sylvers – LA's favorite family soul act of the 70s, really burning strong here for the Capitol club years! The album follows nicely in the mode of some of their bigger chart hits of the time – using the group's surprisingly well-crafted harmonies in a playful mode that often has some nice uptempo dancefloor touches, but which still manages to lay back at just the right points for a mellow cut. The album's self-produced by the group, and titles include "New Horizons", "The Party Maker", "Another Day To Love", "Star Fire", "Any Way You Want Me", "Dressed to Kill", and "Lovin' Me Back".

Tracks include "Body Strong", "Blackbird", "Happiness", "Lover Man", "You Are My Friend", "Can't Stop Dancing", "In My Fantasy", and "Sharing Something Perfect Between Ourselves".

new Piero Umiliani — 5 Bambole Per La Luna D'Agosto (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Cinevox (Italy), 1969. New Copy .... $14.99
One of the greatest soundtracks we've ever heard from Piero Umiliani – an incredibly groovy record from the very first note! The score's got a fantastic mix of groovy scoring, jazzy bits, and cool little vocals – spare organ lines that set the tune on most numbers, stepping basslines to set the rhythms, and scatting lyrics from I Cantori Moderni – a group who make the act of counting to 5 sound incredibly cool! The feel is quite similar to Umiliani's sublime Sweden Heaven & Hell soundtrack (and at one point, you even can hear the guy with the funny voice from "Mah Na Mah Na") – and the music is exactly the kind of wonderful stuff that first got us digging Italian film scores so many years ago. This great reissue adds a bunch of previously unreleased tracks to the original – a whopping 34 tracks in all – 14 from the original album, plus 3 stereo bonus cuts, and another 17 mono tunes. Titles include a few versions of the main theme, plus "Titoli Coda", "Luna Di Piero Agosto", "Bambola Omicida", "Interludio Azzurro", "Cinque Bambole", and "Danza Jazz Moon".

Wild work from The Ventures – a set that really has them trying to change with the times – and coming up with some excellent sounds in the process! Fortunately, the music more than makes up for the visuals – as the group's well-crafted guitar lines are a perfect fit for the album's pop psych tunes! EW Wainwright/Carlos Nino & Friends — Luv N Haight Edit Series Vol 3 – Healer Don't Break (Spaceways Radio Edit and Additions by Carlos Niño & Friends, original) (clear vinyl) ... 12-inch
Luv N' Haight, 1981/2013. New Copy .... $9.99
A classic bit of early 80s spiritual jazz from EW Wainright – plus a re-edit/interpretation from contemporary cosmic torch carrier Carlos Nino and friends! The original version of "The Healer Don't Break" is stormer from the African Roots Of Jazz LP – kicking off with a whistle and a heavy wallop of African-inspired drums – and it quickly adapts into a jazzier groove, augmented by piano and vibes and horns – and evolves again with a third act that features some great chorus vocals. Amazing stuff! (Limited edition on clear vinyl. Includes download.)
