new Dells — Face To Face ... LP
ABC, 1979. Used .... $1.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A later effort from the Dells, cut around the time ABC was having some great luck with the Detroit soul of The Dramatics – and also recorded in Detroit, with production work by the likes of Al Perkins, Rudy Robinson, and Calvin Carter, the Dells' old boss at Vee Jay. The tunes have a smoother approach than the group's work at Chess/Cadet – but their vocals are still top notch, with that raspy soul quality that has made them sound consistently strong over the years, no matter what the setting. Includes "Face To Face", "Thought I Could", "Face To Face", "Hooked On Loving You", "Love Me", "Wrapped Up Tight", and "Changed Man". Lots of nice ballads!
(Cover has a light wear, a promo stamp, a sticker, and a couple of some light marks from sticker removal.)

new Kenny Dorham — Kenny Dorham & The Jazz Prophets Vol 1 ... CD
ABC/GRP, 1956. Used .... $12.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic bit of lost hardbop – an obscure ABC album that has Kenny Dorham working with his Jazz Prophets group! The combo's a quintet with a unique lineup that includes Dick Katz on piano, JR Monterose on tenor, Sam Jones on bass, and Arthur Edgehill on drums – and the whole set's got an open-ended sort of approach that's much more like albums of the time on Blue Note or Savoy than it is the usually more staid ABC jazz sides of the 50s! Monterose and Dorham are fantastic, and really open up on the 5 tracks on the album – all of which are long enough to give the players plenty of room to blow. Probably one of the best jazz records ever recorded for ABC – with titles that include "The Prophet", "DX", "Tahitian Suite", and "Blues Elegante".

new Four Tops — Main Street People ... LP
ABC, 1973. Used Gatefold .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Really nice work from The Four Tops – proof that they were still going quite quite strong after Motown! The album's got a hip sound that shows the group moving through a wider range of emotions than we ever remember – crafting rich deep harmonies that still stand apart from the big wave of sweet soul quartets of the early 70s, and which sparkle with all the emotion that Levi Stubbs' voice had to offer. Includes their great theme to Shaft In Africa, the track "Are You Man Enough" – plus loads of other great ones like "I Just Can't Get You Out Of My Mind", "It Won't Be The First Time", "Sweet Understanding Love", "Too Little, Too Late", "Peace Of Mind", and "Main Street People".

new Isaac Hayes — Chocolate Chip ... LP
HBS/ABC, 1975. Used Gatefold .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Slightly later than some of Isaac Hayes' biggest Stax albums – but a great little record that's filled with some excellent smooth soul material! The record shows Hayes really trying to push his style to new levels, and it's got a sophistication that you don't hear on earlier albums – a sound that hints at the Polydor years, but without as much of a disco influence. Ike's also dropped his thing of doing a lot of soul covers of pop tracks – which means that the record's got a lot more original material, served up with a new sort of focus on songwriting! Titles include "Chocolate Chip", a perennial fave on the dancefloor, in both vocal and instrumental versions – plus "I Can't Turn Around", "Come Live With Me", and "Body Language".
(Cover has a cut corner and black tape holding the bottom seam.)

new Impressions — Versatile Impressions ... LP
ABC, 1969. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Less Curtis Mayfield tunes than usual – but the record still sounds great! The arrangements are by Johnny Pate, who handled the group's best work of the 60s – and he gives all the material a great sound that perfectly matches the smooth raspy harmonies of the trio. Curtis contributed the song "Don't Cry My Love", Pate wrote "Oo You're A Livin Doll", and other tunes include "East Of Java", "Sermonette", "The Look Of Love", and "Just Before Sunrise".

new Keith Jarrett — Back Hand ... LP
ABC/Impulse, 1974. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Prime Keith Jarrett on Impulse Records – and a still-wonderful session that features work by Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, and Paul Motian! The sound here is a bit more focused than on some of Jarrett's earlier Impulse sides – but still has that rich and organic sound overall – blending instruments from all players with a sound that's spontaneous and flowing. Jarrett himself plays a bit of percussion and wood flute – and Redman also plays maracas and musette! Tracks are long, and include "Kuum", "Inflight", "Vapallia", and "Backhand".
(White label promo. Cover has a cut corner, a few creases, and some wear.)

new Masqueraders — Everybody Wanna Live On ... LP
Hot Buttered Soul/ABC, 1975. Used .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Maybe the best album ever by this sweet southern vocal group – produced and arranged by Isaac Hayes, who'd always had a big hand in the group's sound. The record's got a style that reminds us of mid 70s Manhattans, but perhaps with more of an edge on some of the vocals, especially on the more uptempo tracks. Includes the great cut "Please Don't Try", with a nice electric piano groove and funky vocals, plus "The Traveling Man", "Sweet Sweetning", "Baby It's You", "Everybody Wanna Live On", and "Your Sweet Love Is A Blessing".
(Cover has a cut corner.)

new Curtis Mayfield & The Impressions — Ballads ... CD
ABC/Mercury, 1960s. New Copy .... $8.99 9.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sublime mellow tracks from Curtis Mayfield & The Impressions – a great reminder that amidst all the uptempo groovers they gave us in the 60s, the group also could really make a ballad shine too! These slower-paced cuts feature harmonies that are even more sublime than on the upbeat numbers, and some especially heartbreaking leads from Curtis – whose slight vocal crackle always really seems perfectly suited for moods like these. Titles include "I Can't Stay Away From You", "I Loved & I Lost", "Just One Kiss From You", "Falling In Love With You", "I'm So Proud", "Never Let Me Go", and "I'm The One Who Loves You".

new Les McCann — Change Change Change – Live At The Roxy ... LP
ABC, 1977. Used .... $0.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mostly vocal – but a set that has Les singing and playing along with some very funky backing! The live setting does nothing to diminish the funky sound that Les had been hitting in the mid 70s – and in fact, it seems to let the players in the group open up even more, jamming it hard with extended solos that you don't always get on Les' studio albums. Titles include "Change Change Change", "North Carolina", "The River", "The Song Of Love", "I Don't Want To Say Goodbye To A Brother", and "Rid Of Me".
(Cover has a Sound Purchase sticker.)

new Mighty Clouds Of Joy — Kickin ... LP
ABC, 1975. Used .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Kickin it is! This gospel group really had the right idea – taking their spiritual groove into a secular vein, by hooking up with producer David Crawford and arranger Mike Terry for this tight album of heavy soul tracks. The set was recorded in Atlanta, with that strident Atlanta club sound of the mid 70s – a perfect fit for the quintet's soaring harmony vocals. Titles include "Mighty High", "Leanin", "I Got The Music In Me", "Millionaire", "Touch My Soul", and "Everything Is Love".

new Blue Mitchell — African Violet ... LP
ABC/Impulse, 1977. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet electric funk from Blue – recorded in a warm, largely arranged style that's reminiscent of the best Freddie Hubbard fusion work from the 70s – but which has an even tighter sound overall! The groove is great – kind of a Kudu Records vibe, and Blue's actually quite good in this format – stepping off with a bit more confidence than on his electric sides from Mainstream, and getting the benefit of some great tenor sax work from Harold Land on a few numbers! Mitchell's always one of those players who actually seems to stretch out more in a set where he's not the leader of a small combo – and his solos here are surprisingly strong, and filled with soul – as are those of Land and tenorist Herman Riley. Titles include "Sand Castles", "Ojos De Rojo", "Mississippi Jump", "As", "Square Business", and "Forget".
(cover has a bumped corner.)

new Jimmy Raney — Jimmy Raney Featuring Bob Brookmeyer ... LP
ABC, 1956. Used .... $29.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Jimmy Raney's greatest albums – and a hard swinging set that features some wonderful interplay between his guitar and the valve trombone of Bob Brookmeyer! Piano is handled by either Hank Jones or Dick Katz – and the group has a lively edge that's reminiscent of Raney's earlier work on Prestige – modern, but never too cool, a perfect illustration of the powers Raney had during the few years when he was at his height! Jim's tone has softened a bit by the time of this recording, but the groove is still all in the right place – and the set's a great batch of single-line guitar tracks that stands right up there with the best mid 50s work by Tal Farlow. Tracks include "The Flag Is Up", "Get Off That Roof", "Jim's Tone", and "Too Late Now".
(Original pressing, with deep groove. Cover has some wear, a partially split top seam, and some stains.)

new Rufus featuring Chaka Khan — Rags To Rufus ... LP
ABC, 1974. Used .... $2.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic early album by Chaka Khan and the jazzy soul group Rufus – and the record that pushed them over the top, chartwise! The album features their huuuuuge hit "Tell Me Something Good", a simply incredible workout that was the perfect mainstream showcase for Chaka's great voice, made even better by the use of one of those cool Peter Frampton-vocoder thingies. The album also features some other excellent material that's a bit more restrained, and more in the band's usual jazz funk mode – like "Ain't Nothing But A Maybe", "You Got The Love", "Smokin Room", and "Sideways".

Sure, it was a hit – but it's also an excellent batch of jazzy soul, sung by one of the 70's greatest voices, backed by a sweet mellow vibe that's still influencing hip hoppers today. new Joe Sample — Carmel ... LP
ABC, 1979. Used .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
God, we love this record – and we're not ashamed to admit it! Sure, it sold a gazillion copies – and sure, for some folks it showed the true demise of the Crusaders ensemble. But for us, it's a masterpiece of smooth fusion, and a landmark album of easy jazz that spawned countless imitators that could never hope to match Sample's simple and elegant use of funky riffing and lyrical chords – coming in with just the right dash of darkness when the record's in danger of sounding too light. Most of the rest of the Crusaders had a hand in the record, and the set's got the smooth west coast sound you'd expect from the title. Tracks include "Carmel", "Cannery Row", "Sunrise", and "More Beautiful Each Day".
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a gold stamp & a bit of light wear.)

new Soft Machine — Soft Machine ... LP
Probe/ABC, Late 60s. Used Gatefold .... $39.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The amazing debut of Soft Machine! It's hard to find a more seminal moment of jazz rock from the British scene – and there's certainly few albums from its generation that stand up as well over the years as this one! The trio of Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, and Michael Ratledge carve out the future of progressive playing on this excellent set of shorter tunes that still offer up all the hard jamming of later years. Beat group morphs into prog jazz before your very eyes – on tracks like "Hope For Happiness", "Why Am I So Short", "Save Yourself", "Priscilla", "So Boot If At All", "A Certain Kind", "Lullabye Letter", and "Why Are We Sleeping?".
(Original pressing – with the spinning wheel cover! Vinyl has some marks that click. Cover has light wear, some pen, and a couple of pieces of colored tape in two corners.)

new Steely Dan — Countdown To Ecstasy ... LP
ABC, 1973. Used .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Superb work from Steely Dan – and a record that really shows them hitting perfection in the studio! The core sound of this one's jazzier than before – with some great help on instrumentation from Victor Feldman, Lanny Morgan, Bill Perkins, and other west coast jazzers – all helping the group sound great on some of the tightest tracks ever written by the team of Becker and Fagan! Ecstasy is definitely in reach with the sound of this set – a sublime effort all the way through that really set a whole new standard in 70s rock! Includes classics like "Bodhisattva", "Your Gold Teeth", "My Old School", and "Show Biz Kids".
(Original pressing, including the insert. Cover has some wear and minor seam splitting.)

new Street Corner Symphony — Little Funk Machine ... LP
ABC, 1976. Used .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very cool update of older vocal group modes – taken into sublime 70s territory with arrangements and production from Willie Hutch! Street Corner Symphony were part of the 70s doo wop revival movement – but unlike some of their acapella contemporaries, they were always happy to let in some other sounds on their records! In this case, Willie Hutch really makes things sound great – by backing the group's older style harmonies with some grooves that are right up there with Hutch's own best records for Motown – at times almost as funky as his famous soundtracks, at other points in a nicely clubby vibe with plenty of soul. Titles include "Street Corner Symphony", "Funk Machien", "We Got A Good Thing Going", "I'll Fly Away", "Come On Baby", and "No Game To Play".
(Cover has a cut corner and some wear.)

new Ray Charles — Live In Concert ... LP
ABC, 1964. Used .... $7.99 Out Of Stock
A classic live set from Ray Charles – one that equally showcases all the best sides of his sound in the mid 60s! The group's got a nice dose of jazz – which it shows right at the start – almost a mix of Basie swing and R&B, of the sort that Ray was sporting heavily in the late Atlantic years, but didn't always get to display in the countrified early years on ABC – and players include David Fathead Newman on tenor, Hank Crawford on alto, and Julian Priester on trombone – all horn players who really help the whole thing swing! Ray plays some great piano alongside his vocals – and tunes include rollicking versions of "I Got A Woman", "You Don't Know Me", "Makin' Whoopee", "Hallelujah I Love Her So", and "What'd I Say".

new Wilton Felder — We All Have A Star ... LP
ABC, 1978. Used .... $0.99 Out Of Stock
Solo sounds from Crusaders reedman Wilton Felder – a really great set that's very much in the best vibe of his larger group at the time – yet one that also offers up a stronger focus on Wilton's sublime solo work on tenor! The album's got plenty of Crusaders help on board – given that Stix Hooper and Joe Sample produced the set along with Wilton – and the vibe's a wonderful blend of electric backings, with especially great keyboard lines, and Felder's well-phrased saxophone lines over the top! A few cuts feature vocals – sung by Angela Bryant or Debbie Demoia Ross – and titles include "We All Have A Star", "I Know Who I Am", "The Cycles Of Time", "Why Believe", "Ride On", and "You & Me & Ecstasy".

new Isaac Hayes & Dionne Warwick — Man & A Woman ... CD
ABC/Big Break (UK), 1977. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
A wonderful duet set from Ike Hayes and Dionne Warwick – one that draws on the classiest side of the Hayes spectrum, and uses his groove to help Dionne find some great new energy! Even in performance, the music has that great rich quality that Isaac always brought to his solo recordings in the 70s – with strings, backup singers, and some tight undercurrents that help keep things soulful throughout – really cutting through the schmaltz of Ike's shiny tux on the cover! Dionne really sparkles in his company – and the record features duo numbers, solo spots, and even some nice medley tracks. The band behind the pair are electric, mellow, and very soulful – and titles include "Can't Hide Love", "Chocolate Chip", "Then Came You", "Come Live With Me", "Unity", and "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" and "I Say A Little Prayer", done nicely in a medley together.

ABC, 1974. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99 Out Of Stock
Fantastic stuff from John Lee Hooker, and a record that's unlike any other he's ever done! The groove is very hard and funky, with tight drumbreaks and excellent basslines that you'd hardly expect to find on an album by a blues artist – jamming around with a tight groove that really makes us love the record! The guitar on the set is wonderfully scratchy – ripping up and down over heavy drums, with some nice horn touches to flesh the sound up – and wicked vocals from Hook that give the whole set a nice and nasty feel! The best cuts include "Make It Funky", "713 Blues", "714 Blues", and "Bluebird" – and the record's got some very nice breaks!

new Impressions — Fabulous Impressions ... LP
ABC, 1967. Used .... $8.99 Out Of Stock
Fabulous is right – as this one features a great set of original Curtis Mayfield compositions, sung by the group in great form, with arrangements by the total genius Johnny Pate! The record is filled with haunting soul tracks like "Isle Of Sirens", "Aware Of Love", "It's All Over", "Love's A Comin", "You Ought To Be In Heaven", and "She Don't Love Me" – all written by Curtis, and all proof that he's always been one of the best soul songwriters! A nice little gem that often gets lost in the band's catalog – but one to seek out, even if you're a bit nervous about a record with "fabulous" in the title!

new Juarez (Juarez Araujo) — Bossa Nova Nos States (aka Bossa Nova Brasil) ... CD
ABC/Discobertas (Brazil), 1962. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
A gem of a record from the early 60s – a freewheeling set of bossa jazz, played by the combo of tenor saxophonist Juarez! There's a fluid, open groove to the record that's mighty nice – really romping rhythms that set fire to the tenor of Juarez right from the start – as he moves in long, soulful lines filled with plenty of improvisation – and leaps along with the grooves of the group, which also includes Nelson Dos Santos on trombone, Neco on guitar, and either Fats Elpidio or Tenorio Jr on piano! There's no string or other larger orchestrations – just tight core instrumentation, all acoustic – and mighty nice throughout. Titles include "Tema Pra Dede", "Lobo Bobo", "Direi Depois", "Samba Toff", "Maria Ninguem", "O Amor Que Acabou", and "Sincopado Triste".

new BB King — Live In Cook County Jail ... LP
ABC, 1971. Used .... $7.99 Out Of Stock
BB King live at the Cook County Jail in Chicago – and given the amount of great live shows going on in the institution during the early 70s, the jail must have been one hell of a place to be incarcerated! This classic features BB King entertaining the prisoners with a wickedly sharp blues set – done, like most prison live shows, with an edge that's often missing from more conventional concerts – plenty gritty, both on the vocals and guitar, with a sound the Chicago audience must have loved! Titles include "How Blue Can You Get", "Worry Worry", "Sweet Sixteen", "The Thrill Is Gone", "Please Accept My Love", and "Every Day I Have The Blues".

new BB King — Live In Japan (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
ABC/Universal (Japan), 1971. New Copy Gatefold .... $39.99 Out Of Stock
BB King live in Japan – really cooking here on a concert performance that's quite different from his other live records of the time! The set's a double-length one – originally a 2LP set – and most tracks are nice and long, with lots more room for solos from BB – stretching out wonderfully in front of a crowd that's clearly going out of their minds – almost as enthusiastic, at least in the way they're recorded, as the Apollo crowd at a James Brown performance! Although not issued in the US at the time, the material is essential BB King – really great tracks that are some of the best he recorded in the 70s. Titles include "Jamming At Sankei Hall", "Hikari", "Chains & Things", "You Are Still My Woman", "Niji Baby", "How Blue Can You Get", and "Eyesight To The Blind".

new Johnny Pate/Four Tops — Shaft In Africa ... LP
ABC, 1973. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99 Out Of Stock
One of the greatest blacksploitation soundtracks ever – a massively beautiful record that goes beyond any cliches of the genre, and serves up a fantastically unique batch of tracks! Chisoul arranger Johnny Pate did the music for the film – and (dare we say it?) it's even greater that Issac Hayes' work for the first Shaft film – with a depth, sensitivity, and soul that's really amazing – and which has kept the record at the top of our crates for many years. The 4 Tops turn out a great later vocal on the album's theme tune "Are You Man Enough" – and Johnny himself does stellar work on the tracks "Shaft In Africa", "Headman", "You Can't Even Walk In The Park", "El Jardia", "Jazar's Theme", and "Truck Stop"!

One of the archetypal funky soul bands of the 70s – and a group whose impact is still being felt today! Of course, one of the reasons for that is Chaka Khan's incredible vocals – caught here at a prime early point, and very nicely set against some warm electric keyboards and tight groovy guitars. But another reason is the sweet funky playing of Rufus – a bit jazz, a bit rock, and pretty darn soulful right down the middle. Titles include "Jive Talking", "Sweet Thing", "Fools Paradise", "Circle", "Everybody Has An Aura", and "On Time".

ABC (Japan), 1967. New Copy .... $16.99 Out Of Stock
A very groovy mid 60s set from Chris Connor – quite different than her famous 50s sides for Bethlehem, thanks to some hip arrangements by Don Costa! Don never goes to over the top here, but he does add in some nice groovy touches – things like bossa rhythms and electric harpsichord, used sparingly, but to very nice effect – and all in ways that help Connor hit some new ground for the times! Vocals are still totally top-shelf – as you'd expect from Chris – and tracks include "Love Life", "You're Gonna Hear From Me", "Who's Afraid", "Nowhere Man", and "Goin Out Of My Head".

ABC/Just A Memory (Canada), 1965. New Copy .... $11.99 12.99 Out Of Stock
A really great album from Chris Connor – and very different than most of her other work of the 60s! The album's got a light bossa feel, as you'd guess from the title – an approach that works wonderfully with Connor's vocals, and helps push her into territory that's plenty fresh, and pretty darn groovy too! The great Pat Williams handled the arrangements – in that lightly dancing mode that he used for his work on Verve, and select soundtracks too – a blend of jazz and larger orchestrations that's mighty nice, and every bit as captivating as the vocals from Chris. Titles include the great Steve & Eydie cut "Can't Get Over the Bossa Nova" – plus "A Quiet Thing", "Taste Of Honey", "Feeling Good", "Baby The Rain Must Fall", and "Stranger On The Shore". Great cover, too – with Chris looking all boozy!

new BB King — His Best – The Electric BB King (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
ABC/Bluesway (Japan), Late 60s. New Copy Gatefold .... $39.99 Out Of Stock
BB King at his late 60s best – working here in the company of producers Johnny Pate and Quincy Jones, and serving up a great blend of blues and soul in the process! The set's less a "best of", than a collection of ABC work that doesn't seem to be on the other full albums of the time – mostly produced by Johnny Pate, with those great Chicago soul touches that helped his work with King really cross new boundaries – and finally give BB the kind of full, forceful approach that Bobby Blue Bland had been getting for years. The Quincy Jones cuts are two from the soundtrack to For Love Of Ivy – both pretty groovy, with a socking soul punch – and titles on the full album include "Tired Of Your Jive", "Don't Answer The Door", "The BB Jones", "Paying The Cost To Be The Boss", "All Over Again", "I Don't Want You Cutting Off Your Hair", "Sweet Sixteen", "Meet My Happiness", and "You Put It On Me". CD features lots of bonus tracks – including "Waitin On You", "Messy But Good", "Stop Leading Me On (single)", "Never Trust A Woman (single)", "Sloppy Drunk (single)", "Rockin Awhile", "Night Life", "Help The Poor (single)", and "How Blue Can You Get (single)".

new Steely Dan — Pretzel Logic ... CD
ABC, 1974. New Copy .... $4.99 9.98 Out Of Stock
Magical music from the team of Donald Fagan and Walter Becker – one of those records that seems to state its existence in simple, straightforward terms – but which is also filled with undeniably complex moments! There's a definite echo of older jazz here – heard famously in the Horace Silver riff stolen for "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", or the Duke Ellington cover of "East St Louis Toodle-oo" – as well as in the group's own "Parker's Band" – one of the strangest songs you'll ever hear about Bird! Yet there's also a lot more going on too – complicated changes and timings, oblique lyrics, and a warmly produced sound that really sparkles on tracks like "Any Major Dude Will Tell You", "Monkey In Your Soul", "With A Gun", "Pretzel Logic", "Night By Night", and "Charlie Freak".

Betty Carter — Round Midnight (Atco) (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Roulette (Japan), Early 60s. New Copy .... $15.99
An interesting early album from Betty Carter – less jazz than some of her later work, but with a bit more of an edge than some of her ABC recordings. The album's got sort of an arranged sophisticated jazz style – in the mode of 60s work by Esther Phillips or Dinah Washington – and Betty handles some wonderful material with a dark edge, like "Two Cigarettes In The Dark", "Nothing More To Look Forward To", "Round Midnight", "I Wonder", "Who What Why Where When", and "The Good Life", all done in a sorrow-drenched style that's incredibly compelling, and a very different side to Betty's career. An album you'll be hard-pressed to find on vinyl – and nicely repacked for CD with 2 bonus cuts: "One Note Samba" and "Shine On Harvest Moon".

John Coltrane — Sun Ship ... LP
Impulse, 1965. Very Good Gatefold .... $11.99
Soaring work from the legendary John Coltrane Quartet – a session that was incredibly far-reaching for the time, and which originally was unissued until after the time of Coltrane's death! The record's got the group really pushing forward strongly – hitting a Love Supreme mode, but also showing even some of the sharper edges that John would explore with the group after this one – a beautiful swan song to the lineup of McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Things soar with a hell of a lot of spirituality, yet never get too overindulgent to lose their groove – and titles include "Amen", "Dearly Beloved", "Ascent", "Attaining", and "Sun Ship".

Lamont Dozier — Working On You ... CD
CBS/Expansion (UK), 1981. New Copy .... $13.99
A sweet mellow groover from the mighty Lamont Dozier – a set that's not nearly as well known as his earlier work of the 70s, but one that has the Motown man still riding strong! In contrast to the fuller, clubbier grooves of Dozier's ABC work, most of the tunes here are a bit more laidback and mellow – still with a groove, but not nearly as full-on – and with a sophisticated, sensual feel that's a fair bit like Leon Ware at his best! Production is nice and warm throughout, but never too slick – and there's some really compelling keyboard bits, especially some use of Prophet 5, which makes for a nice contrast with Lamont's vocals. The whole thing's great – and titles include "Why", "Playing For Keeps", "Chained", "Cool Me Out", "Working On You", "Starting Over", and "You Made Me A Believer".

Dramatics — Shake It Well – Best Of The Dramatics 1974 to 1980 ... CD
MCA, Mid 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $4.99 5.98
Excellent middle period work by the Dramatics – recorded after their years at Stax, with a slightly smoother groove, and featuring some great tunes that really sparkle! By this point, the group were hitting a Detroit modern mode – with less of the rough edges of the Stax work, which meant that the harmonies were even tighter than ever – perfectly placed on the best cuts, with a precision you wouldn't have expected a few years earlier. Songwriting is still great – and this 16 track set features many fine numbers from their ABC LPs of the late 70s when the group were working with Don Davis. Titles include "Be My Girl", "Love Is Missing From Our Lives", "Door To Your Heart", "Stop Your Weeping", "Shake It Well", "You're Foolin You", and "Do What You Want Be What You Are", one of the greatest 70s ballad tracks ever!

Four Tops — Still Waters Run Deep ... LP
Motown, 1970. Very Good .... $4.99
Possibly the last big hit that the Four Tops ever cut for Motown – and proof that they could still turn out strong material, as was later proven by their work at ABC. The title cut – "Still Waters (Run Deep)" – is one of those always enjoyable, surprisingly sophisticated little pop soul tunes – and the record features a lot of other nice moments like "Love Is The Answer", "Reflections", "I Wish I Were Your Mirror", "Bring Me Together", and a reprise of "Still Waters". Nice use of moog, too!

Mats Gustafsson & Nu-Ensemblen — Hidros One – For Nine Improvisers, Tape, & Conductor ... CD
Caprice (Sweden), 1997. New Copy .... $16.99 18.99
A wonderful larger-concept piece from reedman Mats Gustafsson – and an important recording that really stands to only complement some of his freer, looser work of the time! The set's got a vibe that's similar to some of the best mixed composition/improvisation works of the 90s – put together with Gustafsson at the helm, conducting the actions of a nonet that also includes Barry Guy on bass, Sten Sandell on piano and prepared piano, Gunter Christmann on trombone and cello, Per-Ake Holmlander on tuba and aluminum tube, Axel Dorner on trumpet, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, Fredrik Ljungkivst on tenor and baritone, Raymond Strid on drums, and Mats himself on soprano, tenor, baritone, fluteophone, and French flageolet! The tape elements are relatively minor, and most sounds really come from the improvisations directed by Gustafsson – often in the farther reaches of sound that he was exploring strongly at the time – and surprisingly subtle, especially given the size of the group. Titles include "ABC", "ABCDEFG", "ABC", "ABCDE Coda", and "Intro AB".

Thelma Houston — Sunshower (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Dunhill/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1969. New Copy .... $16.99
A pretty darn amazing album from Thelma Houston – recorded during the zenith of Jimmy Webb's career, when Jimmy was not only one of the hippest songwriters in pop, but also kind of a mini-Burt Bacharach, writing, arranging, and conducting albums for a variety of stars. This little gem features Thelma fronting a set of 11 original tunes by Jimmy – arranged with a hip pop sophistication that few other talents of his time could match – soul and strings coming together in a wonderful swirl that makes for one of Thelma's most compelling records. Titles include "Crazy Mixed Up Girl", "This Is Where I Came In", "Pocketful Of Keys", "Cheap Lovin", "This Is Your Life", "If This Was The Last Song", and "Sunshower". This version includes a handful of bonus tracks released as singles for ABC Dunhill in 1970 including a sweet version of Laura Nyro's "Save The Country", plus "I Just Can't Stay Away", "I Just Gotta Be Me", "Crying In The Sunshine", "(The) Good Earth" and "Ride, Louis, Ride".

Impressions — Check Out Your Mind ... LP
Curtom, 1970. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Righteous late 60s soul from The Impressions – the group's last album with Curtis Mayfield in the lineup! The sound here follows heavily from the Young Mods and This Is My Country years – a heavier take on the trio's soul stylings than their work over at ABC in the mid 60s – pushed into more heady political territory, yet still informed with an unmatched approach to harmony soul. Arrangements are by Riley Hampton and Gary Slabo, and they've got some great psychedelic soul touches that are a perfect precursor to Curtis Mayfield's solo work to follow on Curtom – a great groove that steps out wonderfully with an undercurrent of funk in the mix. Henry Gibson plays some great congas on the set – again hinting at the Mayfield sound to come – and titles include "Check Out Your Mind", "Madam Mary", "We Must Be In Love", "Only You", "Say You Love Me", "Turn On To Me", "Do You Wanna Win", and "You're Really Something Sadie".

Beautiful early Chicago soul that ranges from fragile ballads to swingin' party cuts. Impressions — Young Mods' Forgotten Story ... LP
Curtom, 1969. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Quite possibly our favorite-ever album by the Impressions! The record is a key transitional one – and it has them opening up the politics that were often hidden by spiritual metaphors on earlier ABC albums, into a righteous soul groove that hints a lot at the overblown direction Curtis Mayfield would take in the 70s, yet which still retains all the tightness of the group's earlier work. Nearly every single cut's a classic – and the group outdid themselves vocally, especially Curtis, who always makes our heart break on this one! Donny Hathaway and Johnny Pate handled the arrangements, and tracks include "Choice Of Colors", "The Girl I Find", "Mighty Mighty (Spade & Whitey)", "Soulful Love", and "Seven Years".

Jackie & Roy — By Jupiter & Girl Crazy ... LP
Roulette, Early 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold .... $3.99
One of the most obscure Jackie & Roy sessions ever – a split LP that features one side of tracks from the musical By Jupiter, and another from the show Girl Crazy! The style of the set is in a similar mode to Jackie & Roy's best work for ABC – with small combo jazz group backing, and a clever vocal approach that has Jackie taking the lead on some of the more serious tracks, and Roy joining in on some very groovy duets for the more playful numbers. Titles include "Jupiter Forbid", "Everything I've Got", "I Got Rhythm", "Bidin My Time", "Could You Use Me", and "Careless Rhapsody".

Thad Jones & Mel Lewis — Presenting Thad Jones & Mel Lewis & The Jazz Orchestra/Live At The Village Vanguard/Big Band Sound Featuring Miss Ruth Brown ... CD
Solid State/BGO (UK), 1966/1967. New Copy 2CD .... $16.99 22.98
A trio of classics from the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra! First up is the initial Presenting album – great music by one of the hippest large American ensembles of the late 60s – almost a US equivalent to the groovy sound of the Clark Boland Big Band over in Europe! Trumpeter Thad Jones and drummer Mel Lewis had already made some great music together on their own – but once they came together in a record like this, they really found a great new direction for their energy – a bold musical force that's strong enough to also encompass the rich talents of players who include Pepper Adams on baritone sax, Joe Farrell on tenor, Jerome Richardson on soprano sax, Richard Williams on trumpet, Bob Brookmeyer and Tom McIntosh on trombones, Hank Jones on piano, and Richard Davis on bass! The sound is full, but never overwhelming – and like the Clark Boland group, this one has a great way of breaking open to allow key soloists to have some great space on their own – a modern approach, and one that still never has the band losing its groove. Titles include "ABC Blues", "Mean What You Say", "Three & One", and "Once Around". The next album was recorded live in the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis home turf at the Village Vanguard! The group at this point was a freshly-created outfit filled with some of the best large group jazz soloists of the time – players that included Jerome Richardson, Joe Farrell, Eddie Daniels, Pepper Adams, Richard Williams, and Bob Brookmeyer – not to mention Jones and Lewis themselves! The style here is very much in the mode that the Clarke Boland Band was crafting in Europe during the same period – a redefinition of the larger jazz group, in a way that allowed it to swing with the dynamic energy and soul of some of the smaller combos of the 60s. And while the Jones/Lewis group had many years over which to hone their craft, they've never sounded better than on these initial recordings – as you'll hear on tracks that include "Samba Con Getchu", "A That's Freedom", "Bachafillen", and "Little Pixie". On the last album in the set, Ruth Brown joins the big band of Thad Jones and Mel Lewis – in a set that's a real standout in the career of all three artists! Thad and Mel already have a pretty great groove going at this point – a large ensemble approach to jazz, yet one that's swingingly soulful – very much on a par with some of Gerald Wilson's hip work of the same time at time. And adding in Ruth Brown's vocals is a great choice – as she not only needs a great showcase like this for her amazing voice, but also because she really helps unlock a soulful sort of energy that the group always had in their instrumental music. The approach is a bit like some of Etta Jones' best 60s recordings – a nice shift for Brown – and titles include "Black Coffee", "Fine Brown Frame", "You Won't Let Go", "Trouble In Mind", and "Be Anything (But Be Mine)".

Pharoah Sanders — Elevation ... LP
Impulse, 1974. Very Good Gatefold .... $24.99
A fantastic album by Pharoah Sanders – one of his later albums for Impulse, but one of his best! The record has Pharoah grooving in a strongly modal style – working up long passages of rhythm, piano, and percussion that really build on the promise delivered in earlier tunes on records like Jewels Of Thought and Tauhid. The tunes never go too far out, and have a really joyous feel that we totally love – opening Pharoah up with that bright spirit that makes some of his 70s work so great, really pushing him past the darkness of the immediate post-Coltrane years. Includes the tremendous track "Greeting To Saud", plus "Elevation", "Spiritual Blessing", "Ore Se Re", and "The Gathering".

Outta Sight (UK), 1965/1966. New Copy .... $7.99
A nice lost girl group single on ABC – ostensibly from the east coast, given that Jerry Ross produced the record. "Gotta Have" is a catchy little number – midtempo, a bit stomping, and with some really weird vocals from the girls, especially towards the middle, and they're pitched in funny kind of way! "Evil One" is mighty nice too – almost even catchier, and like the a-side, set to some great Jerry Ross grooves!

Archie Shepp — Mama Too Tight ... LP
Impulse, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold .... $11.99
Growing brilliance from the young Archie Shepp – a record that's not just about Archie's own amazing work on the tenor, but also his keen modern vision as a leader! The combo here is an ensemble that features some of the hippest modernists of the 60s – Roswell Rudd and Grachan Moncur on trombone, Perry Robinson on clarinet, Howard Johnson on tuba, Charlie Haden on bass, and Tommy Turrentine on trumpet – making a rare non-bop appearance here, and further enforcing our already-high estimation of his talents! The style's somewhat in the "new thing" mode of the period, but it's also a bit more tightly arranged too – almost hitting Mingus-like modes for the bigger ensemble – balancing the force of the group together with very free, bold solo impulses from the players. Side one features the extended "Portrait Of Robert Thompson (As A Young Man)" – and side two features "Mama Too Tight", "Theme For Ernie", and "Basheer".

Billy Taylor — Billy Taylor Touch ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1951/1957. New Copy .... $15.99
The Billy Taylor touch is mighty nice here – on a blend of tracks that were partially recorded during Billy's earliest years as a leader, and partially recorded during his big rise to fame in the late 50s! Taylor's handling of the piano is beautiful throughout – already quite soulful, but showing some of the warmer, more lyrical modes of Billy's early years too! Half the tracks are from 1951 – recorded with a quartet that includes John Collins on guitar, Shadow Wilson on drums, and Al McKibbon on bass – and the other half are from 1958, with Billy's famous trio with Ed Thigpen on drums and Earl May on bass – a lineup similar to his recordings for ABC. Titles include "Good Groove", "Somebody Loves Me", "You Make Me Feel So Young", "Can You Tell By Looking At Me", and "Earl May".

Compilation put together by the GRT label in the mid 70s, who owned the chess/cadet group of labels, so it's heavy on the Chicago sound. There's a few cuts from ABC records too, like the Impressions "It's All Right" and Bobby Bland's "Turn On Your Love Light", but basically the track listing reads like the playlist from WVON or WBEE from the early 70s, loads of heavy hitting South Side R&B and soul numbers: the Dells "Stay In My Corner", Gene Chandler "I Fooled You This Time", Fontella Bass "Rescue Me", Pigmeat Markham "Here Comes the Judge" and Ramsey Lewis' "Wade in the Water" and 18 more!

new Blue Notes — Truth Has Come To Light ... CD
Glades/Henry Stone, 1977. New Copy .... $10.99 12.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A strange but great chapter of The Blue Notes – working here without Harold Melvin or Teddy Pendergrass, but still sounding pretty great on their own! This version of The Blue Notes is a male quartet – not the Melvin group with Sharon Paige who were recording for ABC – and they get some fresh help in the studio from George Perry, who brings in this soaring groove that still echoes earlier Philly work, but also has a bit more of a clubby vibe overall! The style's never disco, but makes for some great uptempo soul – the sort that really lets the group's wonderful vocal style soar strongly – a rich blend that's totally great even without Teddy, and which has a great mix of raspy leads and warm harmonies. Titles include the wicked jazzy dancer "The Girl Makes Me Wanna Sing" – plus "It's Over", "Memories", "Standing By You Girl", "People Are Running Around", and "The Truth Has Come To Light".

Hey, we love this record! It's jazzy, and not at all like Aretha's soul sides for Atlantic – but Aretha's vocals sound wonderful on the record, in a completely different way than on later albums. Arrangements are by Robert Mersey, and they've got a feel that's similar to some of the classic Ray Charles large group recordings for ABC – with slightly churchy backings behind the lead vocals, which are right out front in the set, and almost warmer than on other albums. Great later work by Isaac Hayes – working here in a post-Stax, post-ABC mode that has him forging a smooth soul sound that's really great! The album's not disco, but more of an extension of Ike's baroque approach to arranging – with subtle use of strings and keyboards, in a real Philly soul way. Not surprisingly, the album was recorded at Sigma Sound – which you can hear especially in the massive groover "Moonlight Lovin' (Menage a Trois)", a great long deep groove soul track that builds and builds over the course of 10 minutes. It's a great one, and worth the price of the album alone – but you also get the tracks "Out of The Ghetto", "It's Heaven To Me", and "Don't Take Your Love Away"! new Max Roach — Deeds Not Words (multiple photo cover) ... LP
Riverside, 1958. Used .... $8.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A seminal set from Max Roach – the start of his more righteous stretch in jazz, as you might guess from the title of the album! At some level, the record's got a bit of the feel of the post-Clifford Brown Mercury years from Roach – but at another, it's stretching out towards the directions Max would explore fully on the Candid, Impulse, and Fantasy labels in the 60s – an approach to hardbop that often really pushes its limits – not content to simply set up solos for the players, and instead moving with a much more forceful energy overall! Group members include Booker Little on trumpet, George Coleman on tenor, Ray Draper on tuba, and Art Davis on bass – and the lack of a piano makes for a very exciting sound! The album's got 2 great originals by Bill Lee – "Jodie's Cha Cha" and "Deeds Not Words" – plus Draper's classic "Filide", and the groundbreaking "Conversation" – a very cool solo by Roach on the drums!

Impulse, 1964. Used Gatefold .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really great little album – one that really gets at the bright, joyous feel that Clark Terry brings to his music! Despite the "happy" in the title – which might make you think this one would be a bit silly – the album's a pretty great record! Terry plays both trumpet and flugelhorn (hence the "horns" in the title) – and he's working with a spare, tight, and surprisingly creative group that includes drummer Walter Perkins, bassist Milt Hinton, pianist Roger Kellaway, and the sax team of Phil Woods and Ben Webster. Tunes are light and playful, but never sloppy – instead quite inventive, and done in a way that's halfway between Terry's own late 50s work as a leader (as on Argo), and some of his work on sessions like Ed Thigpen's magnificent Out Of The Storm. Titles include "Jazz Conversations", "High Towers", "In A Mist", "Rockin In Rhythm", "Return To Swahili", and "Impulsive".

The album is famous amongst the break crowd for the track "You Never Come Closer", which has a deep groove and weird fuzzy piano that's been sampled by more than a few folks over the years – but over and above that, the record's an excellent batch of off-beat pop tunes – and it feels like some of the nuttier work that came out on Capitol Records during the late 70s, as evidenced by the Blue Juice/Blue Breaks love of the record in the past decade or two. Tracks include "Did You Give The World Some Love Today Baby", "I'm Pushing You Out", "Beatmaker", "Don't", "Waiting At The Station", "Bath", "You Never Come Closer", and "I Wish I Knew". 2CD version features an insane amount of extra material – 20 more tracks recorded with The Plums and The Dandys in 1969, plus the full bonus album Svenssons Doris – all equally groovy stuff! Bonus tracks include "Benny Law", "Why Did You Go", "Let The Sunshine In", "Wouldn't That Be Groovy", "Don't Let It Rain", "What A Lovely Way", "Boom Bang A Bang", and "Karlekens ABC".

new Isaac Hayes — New Horizon (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Polydor/Big Break (UK), 1977. New Copy .... $14.99 Out Of Stock
This Big Break UK remastered edition includes 3 bonus tracks: "Moonlight Lovin' (Menage a Trois) (Long Version)", "Out Of The Ghetto (Single Version)" and "Moonlight Lovin' (Menage a Trois) (Single Version)".

new Various — Strange Breaks & Mr Thing 2 – More Rock, Funk, Soul, Jazz & Soundtrack Breaks For Modern Living ... CD
BBE (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2CD .... $15.99 16.98 Out Of Stock
A fantastic funky follow-up to the first Mr Thing compilation from BBE – and a set that's equally filled with rare and soulful grooves! If we didn't know better, we'd swear he went into our crates and pilfered our own record collections – because the package contains plenty of overlooked cuts that we've loved for years, but which have never gotten their due – and not even all of them are from totally obscure pressings or small indie labels – just the kind of records that people pass over sometimes, because they don't know how great they sound! There's lots and lots and lots of deeply funky numbers on the collection – and the package really takes us back to the glory days when BBE compilations were always turning us onto something new – especially during the Keb Darge glory days. 2CD set features one mixed disc, one unmixed – with titles that include "Back Ground Music" by Kalyanji Anandji, "Searching For Soul" by Jake Wade & The Soul Searchers, "ABC" by Hot Butter & Soul, "Spooky Do" by Dick Walter, "The Horse" by Val Merral's Orchestra, "It's Just Begun" by Hot City Bump Band, "Sally" by Frank Pleyer Big Band, "Love Is Just A Word" by Johnny Griffith Inc, "Can't Stop Talkin" by Art & Ron, "Family Affair" by The Generation Gap, "Gacek" by Jerzy Milian, "Rockin Chair" by John L Watson with White Mouse, "Pink Panther" by Alan Tew, "Twinkle Stars Boo Galoo (live)" by Oscar Harris & The Twinkle Stars, "The Message" by Tinga Stewart, and "Pru Urebu" by The Rias Orchestra.

new Lee Lovett — Lee + 3 (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Wynne/Jazzhus Disk (Japan), 1959. New Copy .... $24.99 Out Of Stock
One of the few dates ever as a leader from pinaist Lee Lovett – an artist who mostly worked as an arranger, with credits that include stints with the groups of Erskine Hawkins, Cat Anderson, Tab Smith, and Lucky Millinder! Lee's music here has a much more modern feel than some of those artists, though – a laidback and soulful approach to small group material – clearly put together with the ear of someone intent on the larger picture, and not just the individual notes – yet still intimate enough to also showcase Lee's talents on piano too. Rhythm is from Al Hall on bass and Butch Ballard on drums – and many tracks feature the core trio – but a few more feature some especially nice work from Bob Brown on alto and tenor sax. Titles include "Plum Street", "ABC Hop", "Misty", "Judaline", "Angel Eyes", and "If It's The Last Thing I Do".

new Bobby Timmons — From The Bottom ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1964. New Copy .... $4.99 11.98 Out Of Stock
Mellow trio material by Bobby, recorded in the final moments of the Riverside label in its first incarnation, but not issued until 1970, when ABC took over the label's holdings. The set's notable in that Bobby plays vibes on 2 tracks, and also performs an unaccompanied piano solo on another. Backing is by the very sensitive Sam Jones and Jimmy Cobb, and titles include "From The Bottom", "Moanin", "Samba Triste", and "Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars".

Various — Home Schooled – The ABCs Of Kid Soul ... LP
Numero, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $18.99 21.98
Jackson 5, move over – because the folks at Numero Records have uncovered a whole host of rare kid soul acts from the 70s – most of them a fair bit funkier than their Motown contemporaries! The tracks here all clearly follow the lead started by Michael and his brothers at the end of the 60s – but the music is way more than just a simple copycat of Jackson modes – as each of these artists have a really individual approach, and a heck of a lot of personality in their music – despite their youthful years. In true Numero fashion, most of the cuts here are from tiny little labels – issued only as singles back in the day, but produced with a great deal of enthusiasm for the music – and a confident, competent sound that's quite striking, given the age of the performers. The package comes with complete notes on the music – opening up a whole world of lesser-known kid soul acts – and titles include the amazing "Trust Your Child" by Patrizia & Jimmy, plus "I'm Not Ready For Love" by Promise, "One Is Enough For One" by Jack & the Mods, "Now That School Is Through" by Cindy & The Playmates, "Jersey Slide (part 1)" by 3 Stars, "You Are My Dream" by 3 Simmons, "Can't Let You Break My Heart" by Quantrells, "If You're Looking For Love" by Triads, "Yellow Ribbons" by Atons, "Sweet Pea" by Altyrone Deno Brown, "Time After Time" by Step By Step, "Time" by Otis The 3rd, and "Little Girl" by Michael Washington. LP also contains a bonus track – part 2 of "Trust Your Child" by Patrizia & Jimmy!

new Pharcyde — Runnin' (Jay Dee extended, Smooth extended , Jay Dee inst, acapella)/Drop (extended mix, inst) (limited split colored vinyl pressing) ... 12-inch
Delicious Vinyl, 1995. New Copy (reissue).... $18.99 19.98 Out Of Stock
Two of the finer tracks from Labcabincalifornia produced by Dilla – and early production genius by Jay Dee! For some reason, the Labcabin album still gets a cold shoulder in some circles, in comparison to Bizarre Ride, anyway, but you'd be hard pressed to call this Pharcyde era anything short of great from these two cuts! The A-side "Runnin'" is here in the hard clipping extended version, plus a tighter mix, with that great acoustic Stan Getz sample pushing it all through. "Drop" is another really nice one, quintessential early Pharcyde and a standard bearer for the best 90s hip hop group cuts!
(Limited edition split red and blue colored vinyl.)
