New Juma Sultan's Aboriginal Music SocietyFather Of Origin (2LP & CD box set) ... CD
Eremite, 1971. New Copy 2LP/CD/Book .... Out Of Stock
Amazing music throughout – all recorded under the leadership of bassist Juma Sultan! The package is quite unique – 2LPs worth of music, with a full fresh set of music on an additional CD – all collected in a very heavy box, with an oversized booklet too! The sounds are quite free throughout, but also occasionally introspective, in a beautiful spiritual jazz mode – with echoes of early 70s Impulse Records, mixed with some of the more progressive sides of the avant scene on the east coast at the time! LP 1 features the extended "Fan Dance" – performed by a group that includes Gene Dinwiddie on saxes and flute, Earl Cross on trumpet, Ralph Walsh on guitar, Phil Wilson on drums, and Ali Abuwi on great percussion – plus the shorter "Ode To A Gypsy Son", done by a trio with Abuwi, Sultan, and Earl Cross – who handles a E flat mellophone! LP 2 features unstructured private recordings by a very hip trio – Abuwi on percussion, Sultan on bass, percussion, and alto sax – and an early appearance by Frank Lowe on tenor! The CD features two untitled collective improvisations – with Abuwi on percussion, Sultan on bass and percussion, Abdul Wadud on cello, Phil Wilson on drums, Charles Bobo Shaw on perucssion, Julius Helphill on alto, Gene Dinwiddie on flute, and Rod Hicks on bass. CD
(Two LPs, a CD, and a 28 page 12x12 book – damn expensive, we know – but ultra-limited, and very nicely put together!)
