CD Plastic Sleeves20 Polyclear Japanese Open Top Plastic Sleeves – Multi-Disc CD ... Record Care
Nagaoka (Japan), New Copy ... $4.99
A cool open-top plastic sleeve for storing your CDs! This one works like the LP and 45 sleeves we stock – in that the plastic hugs your CD package on the front and back, and on the sides and bottom – but the top is open, so you can slide out the jewel case for easy access when listening! There's no flap at all to get in the way – and the sleeves are great if you store your CDs on shelves vertically, and don't like the outside cases to get scratched up. This version fits a range of multi-disc packages – including older-styled jewel cases that handle 2 to 4 CDs, and most of the contemporary larger slipcover styled CD packages too. Record Care

Phillip MitchellJust The Beginning – 20 Previously Unreleased Tracks Recorded In Muscle Shoals ... CD
Grapevine (UK), Early 70s. Used ... $11.99
Landmark work from one of the greatest talents in southern soul – the mighty Phillip Mitchell, a key talent from the best underground work of the 70s! Mitchell recorded only a handful of records under his own name, but his contribution runs deep – given his amazing ability to pen a sophisticated tune that still delivered plenty of soul. And although it would be enough to simply collect the hard-to-find singles that Mitchell recorded over the years, this tremendous set goes even farther – to offer up 20 tracks recorded in the early and mid 70s – all of them done at Muscle Shoals, with a quality level that seems to even beat the other records we've heard from Mitchell! The set's tremendous – must-have release for any fan of southern soul, and an extremely well-done package that's far far better than its simple cover might indicate. Every track is a gem, and the CD's the kind that will finally give Mitchell his due as one of the greatest talents of the south – one of the few artists who was really helping to continue to develop a sound that would have been so easily trapped in the cliches of the 60s. Titles include "Be Strong Enough To Hold On", "Just The Beginning", "It Don't Hurt Me", "Here I Am Again", "Something For The Head", "If You Can't Give Her Love Give Her Up", "Make Yourself At Home", and "Trippin On Your Love". Thelonious MonkBrilliant Corners (20 bit mastering) ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1956. Used ... $8.99
A brilliant title for this brilliant album from Thelonious Monk – a set that really has him coming back strongly in the second half of the 50s – with a new talent for arrangements that really goes past his previous work! Monk's piano and compositions are every bit as great as before – but what really makes the album amazing is his ear for horn lines – particularly the alto of Ernie Henry and tenor of Sonny Rollins, both of whom add in an additional angular quality to Monk's groove. Clark Terry replaces Henry on a few numbers – and the rhythm is from the wonderful team of Oscar Pettiford and Max Roach – on classic long takes of "Brilliant Corners", "Ba-Lue Bolivar Blues Are", "Pannonica", and "Bemsha Swing". Riverside, 1960. Used ... $6.99
They're not kidding with the title of this one – because although the record was only Wes Montgomery's second album as a leader, he was already making plenty of waves with the sound of his guitar! The session lines Wes up with the very tight rhythm team of Tommy Flanagan on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Albert Heath on drums – all of whom lay back and mostly let Wes take center stage – sparkling on a number of original tunes that include "West Coast Blues", "Mister Walker", and "D Natural Blues". Other tracks include a great fast take on Sonny Rollins' "Airegin", plus "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "Polka Dots & Moonbeams". CD

New VariousDisco Giants – 20 Full Length Disco Classics Of The 80s ... CD
Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), Early 80s. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
Way more than you'd expect from the title and cover – not a batch of familiar disco hits, but a treasure trove of club classics from the early 80s! Sure, some of the artists here are familiar – but most of them are from the indie side of the spectrum, and even the few big stars are represented by either non-hit tracks, or hard to find remixes that make this collection well worth seeking out! And given the early 80s focus of the track selection, there's less disco here than 80s groove and boogie-styled rhythms – heavy on the beats and keyboards, and still filled with plenty of great vocals. 20 tracks on 2CDs – with titles that include "Dreamer (long vocal)" by BB&Q Band, "Nights Of Pleasure (Nick Martinelli mix)" by Loose Ends, "You Can't Run From My Love" by Stephanie Mills, "I'm Out To Catch" by Leon Haywood, "Just Another Lover (12" mix)" by Johnny Kemp, "Fall Down" by Tramaine, "I Feel For You (12" mix)" by Chaka Khan, "Got To Be Real" by Selection, "Garden Of Eve (long)" by Yvonne Gage, "The Rhythm Of The Jungle" by The Quick, "Burnin Love" by Con Funk Shun, "I Need You" by Network, "Love Take Over" by Five Star, and "To Be With You" by Maxx Traxx. VariousEthiopiques Volume 20 – Either/Orchestra Live In Addis ... CD
Buda (France), 2005. Used 2CD ... $8.99
An amazingly great set from Either/Orchestra – easily their finest album ever, and a wicked batch of Ethiopian funk! The set's a very faithful homage to the best Ethiopian styles of the 70s – with lots of echoes of the generation of Mulatu, who also makes a guest appearance himself on the album! Bits of Afro Funk come into play with more complicated jazz – making for a really unique approach to the music that stays faithful to its roots, but also somehow extrapolates the best elements and pulls them even more strongly forward. Features percussion by Mulatu, tenor sax by Getachew Mekurya, and vocals by Bahta Gebre-Heywet, Michael Belayneh, and Tsendia Gebre-Marqos. 2CD set includes the tracks "Soul Tezeta", "Amlak Abet Abet", "Muziqawi Silt", "Yezemed Yebada", "Eyeye", "Embi Ba", "Shellela", "Bati", "Feger Aydelem Wey", and "Keset Eswa Betcha". Almost a tribute to the sound of the Ethiopiques series – played with some of its key stars from older years! CD

PTG (Netherlands), Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99
A sweet set of grooves from this always-great series – served up with a special focus on the kinds of snapping sounds that were making the scene in the early 80s! Nearly all the tracks on the set were recorded in 1983, and capture a special point in funky soul – a time when the music was really moving past familiar modes from the disco years, and coming across with a leaner, meaner groove that's plenty heavy on sweet beats and keyboards! Titles include "One Mind Two Hearts" by Paradise, "Mr Business" by Tom Browne, "A Man Like You" by Lemelle, "You've Gotta Believe" by Lovebug Starski, "Real Love" by Ritchie Family, "Give Me What I Want" by Bon Rock, "Be With You Tonight" by Total Contrast, "Say Something Love" by Kashif, and "I Want Your Love Back" by Celena Duncan. New VariousWelsh Rare Beat 2 – Another 20 Vintage Slices Of Cymraeg Soft Psych & Welsh Kosmic Pop ... CD
Finders Keepers (UK), 1970s. Used ... $14.99
Wonderfully wild music from the under-tapped Welsh scene of the 70s – a hotbed of some of the most amazing music we've ever heard, even though much of it was only ever issued on very tiny labels! This second volume of Welsh Rare Beat almost outdoes the brilliance of the first – and it seems to dig even deeper into the underground scene of Wales to come up with tunes that range from subtly funky to slinkily gentle – all served up with perfect sound throughout, and supported with more than enough notes to help you navigate this magical musical maze! Most lyrics aren't in English, but that further supports the uniqueness of this music – and although there's definitely elements here that match some of the folk funk coming out of England or the US at the time, much of the tunes really have their own, odd feel overall. Titles include "Cymylau" by Sidan, "Rosi" by Edward H Dafis, "Cariad Cyntaf" by Eleri Llwyd, "Ffair Ynys Hir" by Y Diliau 72, "Can O Dristwch" by Heather Jones, "Tocyn" by Bran, "Gwr Boheddig" by Chwys, and "Yr Wylan" by Bara Menyn. New VariousGroove Merchant Turns 20 – 14 Selections From Behind The Counter ... LP
Luv N' Haight, 1970s/1980s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A celebration of 20 years of Groove Merchant, the haven for disco, funk & soul records on Haight St, in San Francisco – also the birthplace of Luv N' Haight & Ubiquity Records! As an anniversary compilation, it's would be appropriate for Luv N' Haight/Ubiquity to make sure that this is one of the best comps they've ever put together – a difficult task, given that these are the folks behind the great Bay Area Funk, California Soul and other great releases – but they pulled it off! The selection of tunes is diverse, yet oddly connective in a soulful, adventurous spirit – whether it's sun-toasted or spacey keyboard-inflected soul, laidback or harder charging funk, groovy psychedelic folk, or rare disco. A very nicely chosen 14 tracks includes "Crystals" by Ron Forella", "You Lied" by Numonics, "Sunlit Horizon" by April Fulladosa, "Stump" by September, "Be Mine" by Lola Johnson, "Date With With Rain" by Frankie Gee, ""Who Is Your Friend" by Soul Liberation, "Get Up And Dance" by Arthur Foy, "Nick Danger" by "Pataphysics" and more. A stone classic from the Modern Jazz Quartet – recorded back when the group still featured Kenny Clarke in its membership, but already with some of the more serious, somber tones that would mark the combo's more famous years! Tracks here are from a variety of sessions in 1953, 1954, and 1955 – and trace an evolution of the MJQ style from initial more composed renditions of bop and modern jazz, to some of the more ambitious colors and tones of the Lewis-penned songbook. Titles include longish readings of "Django" and "La Ronde Suite", plus "Milano", "But Not For Me", "The Queen's Fancy", and "Delaunay's Dilemma". CD

Finders Keepers (UK), Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rare German psych, prog and out there rock – tripped out, but groovy music from the vaults of Eckart Rahn's Kuckuck (German for Cuckoo) label in the 70s! Rumbling drums, ominous organs, spacey synthesizers and atmospheric guitars – often with something of psych steeped groove and and otherworldly melodicism – really cool stuff from a roster that's largely unseen and unheard to us! There's a few recognizable names here (ex-pat American Sam Spence for one) but this is really fresh, exciting and wholly worthy rare rock we're as bowled over by as some of the more celebrated Krautrock of the era. Brawny rhythms and tripped out rock from the genius diggers at Finders Keepers – with some nice insert notes! Titles include "Opening" by Antieater, "Water World" by Sam Spence, "Paranoia Picknick" by Ernst Schultz, "10 Finger Blind" by Ernst Schultz, "Der Turm" by Deuter, "Oh Man" by Armnaggedon, "World As One" by Sam Spence, "Lied Des Teufels" by Nichts, "The Dice" by Ihre Kinder and more. Plenty of giants here, although not of the 70s disco scene you might expect from the title – and instead some great 80s groovers who really helped transform the sound of the dancefloor in the years after disco! There's plenty of basslines, beats, and keyboards in the mix – and most numbers are nice and lean, with a very focused sound. Titles include "Weekend" by Class Action, "Breakin (US club mix)" by Ollie & Jerry, "If You Should Ever Be Lonely (club mix)" by Val Young, "Work That Sucker To Death" by Xavier, "Takes A Little Time (Bandito mix)" by Total Contrast, "Just The Way You Like It" by SOS Band, "Circles" by Atlantic Starr, "Hold On To What You've Got" by Evelyn Champagne King, "Shiver" by George Benson, "Sucker For Candy (hot candy kiss mix)" by Rozlyn Sorrell, "Serious" by Donna Allen, and "Can I" by Cashmere. New Cannonball AdderleyKnow What I Mean? (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Riverside, 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful early work from Cannonball Adderley – and a record that's quite different than most of his better known sets from the time! The album's more spare and stripped-down than usual – with Cannon's alto in a quartet alongside Bill Evans on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. The style is almost more that of Evans than it is Cannonball – lightly lyrical, with a good sense of space – in a way that has Adderley playing out front very strongly, cutting some beautiful lines with his solos, in a really unfettered way! Titles include versions of two of Evans' tracks – "Waltz For Debby" and "Know What I Mean?" – plus nice moody takes on other material, like John Lewis' "Venice", Clifford Jordan's "Toy", and Gordon Jenkins' "Goodbye". CD features 4 bonus tracks too. CD

New Eric DolphyOutward Bound (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Prestige/Fantasy, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
Eric Dolphy's first album ever as a leader – recorded almost immediately after his arrival on the New York scene! The sound here is already bolder and stronger than the Dolphy experiments on the west coast – sharp-edged and freely exploratory, in a way that pushes the playful lyricism of the Chico Hamilton years aside, and reaches out into the new territory hinted at by the title! The group is a quintet that features Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Jaki Byard on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – and the overall sound is a beautiful mix of modernist hard bop and some of Dolphy's later freer styles. Dolphy plays his usual mix of alto, flute, and bass clarinet – and the tracks include "245", "Miss Toni", "Les", and "GW". CD

Vinicius De Moraes is an artist with the soul of a poet, but a hell of a recording career too – one that spans the earliest years of bossa nova, which he helped to create – and runs through some tremendous collaborations in the 60s and 70s as well! This wonderful set brings together all the important Vinicius De Moraes albums for Philips – including a number that have never been on CD before – recordings that take on a wonderful range of styles and different approaches, each very well suited to the nature of the specific projects, or the lyrical needs of the master! Some of the most important records here are the collaborations – including early Black Orpheus work with Jobim, Afro-Sambas with Baden Powell, and later duets with Toquinho – but there's also important soundtracks, music and poetry projects, and some very rare material too! The collection features two separate CDs of rare material, unusual cuts, and singles – Pela Luz Dols Olhos Teus 1 & 2 – plus the individual albums Orfeu Da Conceicao, Vinicius & Odette Lara, Vinicius Caymmi No Zum Zum, De Vinicius E Baden with Ciro Monteiro, Os Afro Sambas, Vinicius Poesia E Cancao Ao Vivo Vols 1 & 2, Garota De Ipanema soundtrack, Jesus Cristo Superstar, Vinicius Canta Nossa Vilha Gabriela, Vinicius & Toquinho (1974), Vinicius/Toquinho (1975), Deus Lhe Pague, Antologia Poetica, 10 Anos De Toquinho & Vinicius, Ump Pouco De Ilusao, and A Arca De Noe Vols 1 & 2. Sweet 70s grooves, and a few key contemporary cuts too – a really wonderful set that's full of overlooked modern soul gems and a great mix of mellow groovers! The package really serves up some of our favorite sounds from the 70s – tracks that are upbeat, yet never uptempo – and find a way of stepping along a midtempo groove that leaves plenty of room for the vocalist to really soar in the lead – hitting these rich, righteous lines that sparkle strongly throughout! The set list is superb, and features even a few surprises to our ears long-trained on modern soul – and tracks include "There I Go" by The Notations, "I Hate Hate" by Razzy, "Pour Your Little Heart Out" by The Drifters, "Daylight" by Bobby Womack, "Got To Find Ms Right" by Buddy Miles, "Tripping Out (Featurecast 2013 re-edit)" by Curtis Mayfield, "What Do You See In Her" by Inell Young, "You Made A Believer Out Of Me" by Betty Lavette, "This Side Of Heaven" by Gavin Christopher, "Spoiled Like A Baby" by Mystique, "If You Really Need A Friend" by Bobby Foster, "Smoothie Pie" by Sky Hi, and "I Don't Know" by Glen Anthony Henry. A really trippy duo – one who definitely live up to their image on the cover, with a heady blend of sitar, percussion, and acoustic guitar! The tracks are all nice and long – rooted in acoustic folk, but infused with a psychedelic sense of exploration too, but in ways that are never too overindulgent, given the lack of electricity on the record – and which instead spin out in a really rich space that's somewhere between UK acid folk, and Island Records during the Nick Drake generation! One of the last albums that Ayler ever recorded – and one of his most memorable! The record shows Ayler at the crossroads, filled with emotion and meaning, struggling to convey his message to a lager audience. At times, he takes a strange soul/jazz format to do so, and has tracks featuring backing by "the Soul Singers" – at others, he plays solo, with some of the most plaintive tones he ever laid down on wax! The record features an incredibly haunting "Message From Albert", plus the tracks "New Generation", "Sun Watcher", "New Ghosts", and "Free At Last". A important record from Joan Baez – one that has the singer expanding her sound, but in all the right possible ways – bringing in some Nashville elements to her folksy roots! The record features some larger backings arranged by producer Norbert Putnam – with bits of strings, The Memphis Horns, and some backup vocals – but most of a focus around the core combo of the album, which includes Charlie McCoy on harmonica, and Pete Wade and Norman Blake on guitars. Titles include "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Three Horses", "Last Lonely & Wretched", "Lincoln Freed Me Today", "Gabriel & Me", and "Fifteen Months". LP, Vinyl record album

John BarryDeadfall ... LP
20th Century, 1968. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Moody magic from the great John Barry – a little-heard soundtrack for a late 60s Michael Caine thriller! Barry's working here in a style that's tense and evocative – mostly orchestral, but with solo guitar on many tracks stepping out front – setting the mood as Barry's orchestrations clatter around with the tightly-strung approach of his best work for the James Bond films! The score kicks off with a striking Shirley Bassey number called "My Love Has Two Faces" – and other titles include "The Meeting", "Statue Dance", "The Last Deadfall", and "Romance For Guitar & Orchestra". An understated masterpiece from The Beach Boys – a record that's probably best known for its inclusion of some key tracks from the Smile sessions – but an album that stands pretty darn nicely on its own! The group are really maturing here – and the mix of Smile-era songs and some of their later ones is really great – a wonderful follow-up to material explored on Friends, and a great hint at the genius to come on Sunflower. The album's essential listening if you dig post-Pet Sounds Beach Boys – especially before they hit their mix of nostalgia and indulgence in the 70s – and titles include the sublime "Cabinessence", plus "Do It Again", "I Can Hear Music", "Be With Me", "All I Want To Do", "I Want To Sleep", and "The Nearest Faraway Place". Ronn/Fuel 2000, Late 70s. New Copy ... $4.99 11.98
One of the last great blues artists to record for the Jewel/Paula label – and a key figure in the Chicago underground as well! Buster Benton works here with a style that's definitely got the Chicago electric vibe of the 70s – but which also echoes earlier, rootsier modes as well – often delivered with a style that's a lot earthier than most of the other blues work coming out at the time on bigger labels – exactly the kind of sound that kept Benton a club favorite back in the day. Titles include "Sweet 94", "Spider In My Stew", "Sorry", "Lonesome For A Dime", "Do It In The Rain", "Lean On Me", "Love Like I Wanna", "Born With The Blues", "Dangerous Woman", and "Money Is The Name Of The Game". Dude! This is the kind of crossover rock/R&B set that the Fillmore scene of the 60s flourished on. Chuck Berry plays live with the band of Steve Miller, which was then a raw bluesy combo, trying their hardest to sound Chicago electric, despite their roots in the Bay Area. Miller sings a bit with Berry, and titles include "Feelin It", "Wee Baby Blues", "Hoochie Coochie Man", and "Driftin Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Stax, 1968. Near Mint- ... $29.99
Booker T & The MGs – definitely doing their thing on this late 60s cooker – and moving their instrumental sound into a whole new range than before! The album has a very groovy feel – nice and tight, with especially great organ and guitar lines – often tuned towards 60s hits by other soul artists, but reworked strongly by the group's wonderful rhythms, and turned into a really cooking batch of Memphis soul instrumentals! There's a few key original tunes on the set – like the title track "Doin Our Thing" – and the cuts "I Can Dig It" and "Blue On Green" – but the covers are equally great, and include versions of "Ode To Billie Joe", "You Keep Me Hangin On", "Expressway To Your Heart", and "Let's Go Get Stoned". Some of the most dynamic music we've heard from Anthony Braxton in years – a set of duets recorded with European bassist Joelle Leandre! We've always loved Leandre's basswork – as she often bows the instrument, creating these beautifully deep tones that ground any sort of improvisational session like this beautifully – kind of flowing out with an earthy energy that really seems to set Braxton on fire here. Anthony plays sopranino, soprano, alto sax, and contra-bass clarinet – and the set features three long improvisations recorded by the pair! CD

Brides Of FunkensteinNever Buy Texas From A Cowboy ... LP
Atlantic, 1979. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A tremendously soulful session from the late 70s P-Funk empire – sung by a group who were George Clinton's answer to Three Degrees, First Choice, and other female club trios of the time! The sound here is hardly as disco as those other groups, though – and there's plenty of funky Clinton touches in the mix – including rumbling basslines, raspy guitars, and a tightly focused groove that has the singers Dawn Silva, Sheila Horn, and Jeanette McGruder working equally with the larger group of musicians on the record. Production is by Bootsy Collins and Clinton, with horn arrangements by Fred Wesley – which makes for some great Horny Horns funk touches on most tracks! The title cut – "Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy" – runs on as a long P-Funk groove for about 15 minutes, but other tracks are shorter, and titles include "I'm Holding You Responsible", "Smoke Signals", "Party Up In Here", and "Didn't Mean To Fall In Love". Black Jazz, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
The Black Jazz recordings of Doug Carn are always a revelation – some of the most powerful, progressive work on the American underground of the early 70s – music that got Carn into way more record collections than you might expect! The sound here is a perfect summation of Doug's early genius – his own work on organ and keyboards, never overdone and mixed perfectly with a righteous array of acoustic sounds from Rene McLean on alto and tenor and Olu Dara on trumpet – both players who soar to the skies on waves of energy begun by Carn! Wife Jean Carn sings on a number of tracks – with this heavenly style that's mighty righteous – every bit as soulful as her later work at Philly International, but in a very different way. The set includes Doug's great reading of "Naima" – plus other wonderful cuts that include "Power & Glory", "Feel Free", "Jihad", "Fatherhood", and "God is One". LP, Vinyl record album

Sublime sounds from Clarence Carter – wonderful work from his singles for Fame Records – a wealth of great music from a time when Carter was really coming into his own! Clarence was great right from the start, but here you can really hear him finding his own voice – that all-knowing, storytelling approach that could make even a simple lyric spin out in a way that was totally captivating – with a quality that set Carter apart from some of his more tear-jerked southern soul contemporaries, into a space of class and confidence that would serve him well for years to come! Every number here was recorded at the Fame Studios, with the kind of killer backings you'd expect from the Muscle Shoals team – and the 2LP set features 24 titles that include "Slip Away", "Looking For A Fox", "The Feeling Is Right", "Snatching It Back", "Patches", "I Found What I Wanted", "Look What I Got", "Too Weak To Fight", "I'm Qualified", "Tell Daddy", "Think About It", and lots more! The legendary Gene Chandler gets down, and gets down good – in this classic late 70s set of clubby numbers and upbeat groovers! The set's one of the best moments on the Chi-Soul series from producer Carl Davis – and features a nicely evolved version of earlier Chicago soul modes from Tom Tom 84 and Sonny Sanders – both of whom push an older Brunswick style into some smoother, more sophisticated modern soul territory! Chandler's vocals are wonderful, as always – and have a catchy snapping feel on the groovers, mixed with surprisingly deep soul on the few mellower moments. Titles include a remake of "Please Sunrise", plus "I'm The Travelin Kind", "Get Down", "Tomorrow I May Not Feel The Same", "Greatest Love Ever Known", and "What Now". LP, Vinyl record album

New Don CherryMu First Part/Mu Second Part ... CD
BYG/Fuel 2000, 1970. Used ... $8.99
Don Cherry really breaks out here on his classic Mu sessions from France – using the new freedoms of post-68 Paris to explore themes at a level that would set the tone for generations to come! The album's very spare, and very improvised – with Cherry on pocket trumpet, piano, and wooden flute – plus a bit of percussion too – alongside drummer Ed Blackwell, who's equally unbridled – showing a huge evolution since the time both he and Don spent in the group of Ornette Coleman! There's a few echoes of the global elements that Cherry would later embrace more strongly in the 70s – but the core energy here is mostly improvised jazz, handled at a level that really makes a lot better use of the freedom than some of Don's contemporaries. Titles include "Total Vibration", "Sun Of The East", "Brilliant Action", "Terrestrial Beings", "Bamboo Night", "The Mysticism Of My Sound", "Psycho Drama", "Smiling Faces Going Places", "Teo Teo Can", and "Dollar Brand/Spontaneous Composing/Exert Man On The Moon". A current Italian vocalist – but one who's taking a lot of cues from older singers of the 50s and 60s – particularly those of the ice-blonde sexpot variety! Anna's working here in a blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation – often given a retro-styled mode that reminds us of some of the Irma La Douce artists in recent years – but which also gets a bit more abstract as the set moves on. From covers of tunes like "Call Me" and "An Occasional Man", Anna moves into more personal original material like "Swimming" and "Could Be", which have a more modern, chilled out sort of groove that pushes the album into new territory. Other tracks include "Hopelessly Fool", "A Guy What Takes His Time", "U Go To My Head", "Adrian", and "Love Is A Reason". CD

Wild stuff! White singer Wayne Cochran looks like he should be a rockabilly star – right down to his big ol' pompadour haircut – but this early album of his for Chess is actually a tight batch of groovers that holds a nice appeal to fans of late 60s funk! Cochran's got a raw Wilson Pickett-ish sound to his voice, and the CC Riders vamp behind him in a nice tight way that's similar to a lot of the mixed race groups backing up other southern soul stars from the time. Searing early solo sides from James Cotton – material recorded in the late 60s, at a time when Cotton was really finding his groove! James serves up plenty of the sharp harmonica lines promised in the title, over backings that show plenty of influence from 60s soul as well – that new punch that bluesmen of his generation were using to push out their sounds in a fresher hybrid of initial Chicago electric modes! RCA/Made In Germany (Germany), 1976. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
A mad bit of music from the great Bo Diddley – recorded after his early 70s funk records on Chess – but with a similar genre-tripping style! The album's got this full-on fuzzy feel right from the start – put together by producer Ron Terry, who matches Diddley's wilder side with some surprising guest appearances from Alvin Lee and Elvin Bishop on guitar, Billy Joel on keyboards, Carmine Appice on drums, and Joe Cocker on vocals! Despite the presence of these rock heavyweights, the set's all Bo Diddley's own – without any of the more watered-down crossover aspects you might expect. Two different Jimmy Stewart comedy soundtracks from the 60s – both of them nice! First up is Dear Brigitte – an overlooked 1965 score by George Duning – done with a mix of the playful modes you'd expect from the story, and some of those great deeper dramatic touches that Duning used in more serious soundtracks – a really rich mixing of modes with a sound that's much stronger than we expected! Titles include "On To BBs", "The Captain", "Magical Moment", "Puzzled Cap'n", "Hey Dad", "Is It A Trick", and "She Sank". Next is an even groovier record – a rare non RCA Henry Mancini soundtrack from the early 60s – the score to Mr Hobbs Takes A Vacation, done with all the best mix of jazz and groovy elements we love in classic Mancini! Instrumentation mixes a key electric guitar melody with some lighter touches on woodwinds – really getting the most out of the melody with some shifts in timing and tone, juxtaposed with a few numbers that are even more playful! One of the last records that Booker Ervin ever recorded, and one of the best! There's a depth of tone and conception here that goes far beyond even Ervin's already-great albums for Prestige – a mix of modernism and soulful expression that really points the way towards jazz expression in the 70s – although sadly, Booker was to leave the planet before getting a chance to stretch out in that era. All 6 tracks on the album are originals – and they sparkle with the imagination found on some of the most top-shelf Blue Notes of the time – work by Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, or Wayne Shorter – played by a group that includes the amazing Richard Williams on trumpet (almost worth the price of the record alone), Bobby Few on piano, Lenny McBrowne on drums, and the little-known Cevera Jefferies on bass. The groove is a mix of 70s harmony soul and early Westbound disco – and the longish tracks get quite involved, both vocally and arrangement-wise. The title cut – "Alvin Stone (Birth & Death Of A Gangster)" – is a righteous post-Temps soul track, and the album's got lots of other nice ones, like "Let This Moment Last Forever", "County Line", and "My Love Won't Stop at Nothing". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a small center split on the bottom seam, a promo sticker, and some light wear.)

First ChoiceDelusions ... LP
Philly Groove/Gold Mind, 1977. Very Good+ ... $5.99
One of the best records ever cut by this soulful Philly female trio! The album's one of the first on Salsoul's Gold Mind subsidiary – and it features sparkling club production by the Harris/Baker/Young team – a landmark force not only in Philly disco, but 70s female soul as well – as their backings for groups of this nature are always sensitive to the complexities of the vocals! The record's mostly uptempo – with plenty of soaring tracks that still retain the more soulful sound of the group's early work – and the songwriting's generally tight, a few notches above earlier albums on Warner – showing that their return to the indie fold was a very good move. Titles include the classic "Let No Man Put Asunder" – plus "Doctor Love", "Indian Giver", "Do Me Again", and a great version of Stevie Wonder's "Love Having You Around". LP, Vinyl record album

Friends From RioFriends From Rio 2014 ... LP
Far Out (UK), 2014. New Copy ... $18.99
One of the best records in years from the mighty Far Out label – and a set that really takes the imprint back to its roots! The name of the record echoes the first Friends From Rio session that launched Far Out almost two decades ago – and like that classic, this one's a collaborative effort between a range of Brazilian and British talents – served up in a style that bridges the gap between older bossa and more contemporary modes! The music is perfect from the ground up – not a cheesy bossa remix project, but a true blend of all the best elements, served up in a rich new style. The project gets key Incognito-style help from Daniel "Venom" Maunick, and a real Azymuth pedigree from Alex Malheiros – and the whole thing features a great range of different singers, including Hyldon, Robertinho Silva, Aleh Ferreira, Ivan Matheus, Denise Pinaud, Sabrina Malheiros, and Carlos Dafe – each wrapped up in a sweet blend of Fender Rhodes, organ, riffing guitar, and sweet jazzy horns. Titles include "So Resta A Porta Se Abrir", "Mas Que Nada", "Garota", "Casino Bangu", "Batucada Bidu", and "Mulher Malagueta". LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note, 2013. New Copy (pic cover)... $6.99 9.98
Great music, a great package, and a cool little record that really makes it worth owning a vinyl version of this great little track! Jill Scott's vocals are wonderful on the main version of "Calls" – remixed here by Mr Porter with added Pharoah Monche rhymes. The remix has these cool spacey touches – almost like someone's cutting the keyboards live – and these shine even more on the instrumental. The flipside has "Porter Chops Glasper" – a totally great 12 minute mix by Porter of grooves from Robert Glasper – keyboards, beats, and lots of sweet little touches all swirled together. And hey, the whole thing's on red vinyl too! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Death Waltz (UK), 2013. New Copy ... $9.99 15.98
Legendary Italian prog combo Goblin – reunited in the studio on the cusp of their 2013 tour – and sounding as vital as ever! This great EP is a slight departure for the Death Waltz label – in that it's a contemporary set, rather than a straight up soundtrack – but the group themselves are revisiting their soundtrack classics. It includes new versions of 3 classics from their Dario Argento canon – "Profondo Rosso", "Suspiria" and "Tenebre" – plus "Roller" – the title track from what's probably their greatest non-soundtrack album. Jerry GoldsmithSand Pebbles ... LP
20th Century, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $6.99
A really striking score from Jerry Goldsmith – penned with just the right sense of drama and tension for this mid 60s military thriller! Goldsmith's already working here with a full palette of colors – and Lionel Newman conducts the music with an added richness that seems to bring out all of his long experience on big budget epics, yet deliver the end results with the more subtle, compressed modes that make Goldsmith one of the more mature composers of the 60s. Horns shimmer with this great sense of restraint – almost painting colors in sound – and given the setting of the film, there's some slight exotic hints in a few instrumental passages as well. Grand SlamLifetimers For The Funk – In The Studio 1985 to 2010 ... CD
TNT Productions (Germany), Late 80s/1990s/2000s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $6.99
A great collection of work from Grand Slam – a German funk combo who were serving up a classic take on American sounds long before the Daptone and Soul Fire generation! These guys are equally influenced by James Brown and George Clinton – especially the latter, given the bass-heavy riffs the group use in their music – and the number of times they get some help from P-Funk alumnus Gary Mudbone Cooper on some of these cuts! The vibe is more late 70s ensemble funk than gritty funky 45 modes – but Grand Slam definitely get their groove right – and have some mighty tight instrumentation to live up to their inspirations. 2CD set brings together a lot of work from the group's first 25 years in music – including some rare tracks, previously unreleased numbers, and a few cuts on CD for the first time ever. Titles include "Goin Out (orig demo)", "Da Rain", "Perfect Day", "Rock My World", "Get Your Own Thing (orig demo)", "Light My Fire", "If I Had", "U Blind", "Hunk/Fop", "Real XTC", and "Manik Botanik". Buck HammerDiscovery Of Buck Hammer ... LP
Hanover, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Pretty darn strange one, and an album that unearths the talent of supposed Alabama boogie-woogie pianist Buck Hammer – who is actually Steve Allen, playing under a different name! The liner notes claim that Hammer was a legendary player in the mid 20th century, but due to reasons only he could explain, he almost never left his hometown of Glen Springs, Alabama. The session as even explained as being one of Hammer's few trips from his home town, to Nashville in 1956, where he cut the sides that would become this album. This rare Hanover release comes with a beautiful pen and ink drawing on the cover of Hammer in action – with a David Stone Martin-esque drawing that adds to the fake "authenticity" of the album. (Hey, it had us fooled – until a customer wrote to tell us the real story!) Titles include loads of originals like "Fink's Mules", "Blue's Blues", "Golly Gee Boogie", and "Jungle Boogie". Leigh Harline/Buddy BregmanVisit To A Small Planet/Delicate Delinquent ... CD
20th Century/Kritzerland, 1957/1960. New Copy ... $19.99
Two Jerry Lewis soundtracks – back to back on a single CD! First up is the very cool Visit To A Small Planet from 1960 – a Jerry Lewis sci-fi flick, done with a cool mix of sprightly themes and spacey touches. There's a few nice theremin moments, mixed with these nice orchestral passages that use strings and woodwinds to create some other-worldly elements inflected with more comedic styles overall. Titles include "Desdemona's Lament", "Arrival On Earth", "To Earth", "Crazy Driver", and "Tear Gas/Conclusion". The Delicate Delinquent is a urban-themed film, scored with lots of nice jazzy touches by Buddy Bregman – a composer who knows how to perfectly balance swing and sentiment, goofball energy and some of the more earnest passages that come out in the narrative. Titles include "The Cop", "A Near Miss", "The Fight", "It's A Boy", "The Bout", and "Bridge To Street/Record Shop". CD

Wilbert HarrisonKansas City – Greatest Hits & Rarities ... CD
Fuel 2000, Early 60s. New Copy ... $11.99
A few hits and a lot more rarities from the legendary Wilbert Harrison – the singer best known for his seminal hit "Kansas City", but an artist with a lot more to offer as well! This overstuffed collection brings together 25 tracks from Harrison's years on Bobby Robinson's Fire & Fury Record labels – the place whe he cut that initial hit, but then went onto recorded a great legacy of bluesy soul and R&B stormers featured in this set! The recording quality is often a bit more stripped-down than other New York productions of the period – giving a rough indie feel to the records that really works well with Harrison's bold, soaring vocals. Wild Jimmy Spruill plays some mighty mean guitar on a number of the tracks here too – with that twangy, spacey sound of his – and titles include "1960", "Drafted", "New York World's Fair", "Cold Cold Heart", "Going To The River", "Pretty Little Women", "The Horse", "Listen My Darling", and "Don't Wreck My Life" – plus the hits "Kansas City", "Ain't That A Shame", and "Let's Stick Together".
