CD Plastic Sleeves20 Polyclear Japanese Open Top Plastic Sleeves – Multi-Disc CD ... Record Care
Nagaoka (Japan), New Copy .... $4.99
A cool open-top plastic sleeve for storing your CDs! This one works like the LP and 45 sleeves we stock – in that the plastic hugs your CD package on the front and back, and on the sides and bottom – but the top is open, so you can slide out the jewel case for easy access when listening! There's no flap at all to get in the way – and the sleeves are great if you store your CDs on shelves vertically, and don't like the outside cases to get scratched up. This version fits a range of multi-disc packages – including older-styled jewel cases that handle 2 to 4 CDs, and most of the contemporary larger slipcover styled CD packages too. Record Care

Very high quality resealable plastic sleeves for your jewel case CDs! The sleeves are very well made, and crystal-clear – just as nice as some of those fancy LP sleeves you'll find for vinyl from Japan. We use these ourselves in the Dusty Groove store – and they're a lot more attractive than other bags we've seen on the market. Record Care

Wes MontgomeryBoss Guitar (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Riverside, 1963. Used .... $6.99
Early greatness from Wes Montgomery – a real cooker that features the great Mel Rhyne on organ, coming out of the same Indy hub as Wes – plus Jimmy Cobb on drums! The bass-less trio format burns nicely throughout – coming across with a bit more soul jazz burn than on Wes' later sides, that small combo that came from Montgomery's earlier roots. Titles include a couple of Montgomery originals – "The Trick Bag" and "Fried Pies" – plus the tunes "Besame Mucho", "Dearly Beloved", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Canadian Sunset", "The Breeze & I", and "For Heaven's Sake". Also includes bonus tracks "Besame Mucho (take 2)" and "Fried Pies (take 1)". CD

Vinicius De MoraesA Bencao Vinicius – A Arca Do Poeta (20 CD set) ... CD
Universal (Brazil), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 20CDs .... $399.99
Vinicius De Moraes is an artist with the soul of a poet, but a hell of a recording career too – one that spans the earliest years of bossa nova, which he helped to create – and runs through some tremendous collaborations in the 60s and 70s as well! This wonderful set brings together all the important Vinicius De Moraes albums for Philips – including a number that have never been on CD before – recordings that take on a wonderful range of styles and different approaches, each very well suited to the nature of the specific projects, or the lyrical needs of the master! Some of the most important records here are the collaborations – including early Black Orpheus work with Jobim, Afro-Sambas with Baden Powell, and later duets with Toquinho – but there's also important soundtracks, music and poetry projects, and some very rare material too! The collection features two separate CDs of rare material, unusual cuts, and singles – Pela Luz Dols Olhos Teus 1 & 2 – plus the individual albums Orfeu Da Conceicao, Vinicius & Odette Lara, Vinicius Caymmi No Zum Zum, De Vinicius E Baden with Ciro Monteiro, Os Afro Sambas, Vinicius Poesia E Cancao Ao Vivo Vols 1 & 2, Garota De Ipanema soundtrack, Jesus Cristo Superstar, Vinicius Canta Nossa Vilha Gabriela, Vinicius & Toquinho (1974), Vinicius/Toquinho (1975), Deus Lhe Pague, Antologia Poetica, 10 Anos De Toquinho & Vinicius, Ump Pouco De Ilusao, and A Arca De Noe Vols 1 & 2. Quintet (Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, & OthersJazz At Massey Hall (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Fantasy/OJC, 1953. Used .... $6.99
A legendary concert – recorded at Massey Hall in Toronto, with a previously-unmatched quintet of superstar bop players – Charlie Parker on alto, Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet, Bud Powell on piano, Charles Mingus on bass, and Max Roach on drums – all coming together in a performance that's a bit rough at times, but which more than makes up for that roughness in its own sense of history! This single LP features the quintet performances from the date (others featured the trio of Powell, Mingus, and Roach) – on titles that include "Perdido", "Salt Peanuts", "All The Things You Are", "Wee", and "Hot House". Sonny RollinsWorktime! (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Prestige, 1955. New Copy .... $8.99 14.98
If worktime was like this for us, you'd catch us showing up on the job early every day – but sadly, nothing at our office can match the brilliance of early Sonny Rollins here – a sharp-edged genius that perfectly illustrates why he was one of the greatest players on his horn for many decades running! There's a depth of tone on the record that rivals Coleman Hawkins or Lester Young – but a quickness of pace and imagination that shows a clear influence from Charlie Parker, and a deftness that few were bringing to the tenor at the time. The rhythm section here is super tight – and features Ray Bryant on piano, George Morrow on bass, and Max Roach on drums – all supporting Rollins' bold lead with lines that bristle with electricity, but still often fall back to let the sound of the tenor envelop the whole group. Tracks are longish, and titles include "Raincheck", "There Are Such Things", "Paradox", and "It's All Right With Me". CD

VariousDisco Giants – 20 Full Length Disco Classics Of The 80s ... CD
Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), Early 80s. New Copy 2CD .... $16.99
Way more than you'd expect from the title and cover – not a batch of familiar disco hits, but a treasure trove of club classics from the early 80s! Sure, some of the artists here are familiar – but most of them are from the indie side of the spectrum, and even the few big stars are represented by either non-hit tracks, or hard to find remixes that make this collection well worth seeking out! And given the early 80s focus of the track selection, there's less disco here than 80s groove and boogie-styled rhythms – heavy on the beats and keyboards, and still filled with plenty of great vocals. 20 tracks on 2CDs – with titles that include "Dreamer (long vocal)" by BB&Q Band, "Nights Of Pleasure (Nick Martinelli mix)" by Loose Ends, "You Can't Run From My Love" by Stephanie Mills, "I'm Out To Catch" by Leon Haywood, "Just Another Lover (12" mix)" by Johnny Kemp, "Fall Down" by Tramaine, "I Feel For You (12" mix)" by Chaka Khan, "Got To Be Real" by Selection, "Garden Of Eve (long)" by Yvonne Gage, "The Rhythm Of The Jungle" by The Quick, "Burnin Love" by Con Funk Shun, "I Need You" by Network, "Love Take Over" by Five Star, and "To Be With You" by Maxx Traxx. PTG (Netherlands), Early 80s. New Copy .... $18.99
A sweet set of grooves from this always-great series – served up with a special focus on the kinds of snapping sounds that were making the scene in the early 80s! Nearly all the tracks on the set were recorded in 1983, and capture a special point in funky soul – a time when the music was really moving past familiar modes from the disco years, and coming across with a leaner, meaner groove that's plenty heavy on sweet beats and keyboards! Titles include "One Mind Two Hearts" by Paradise, "Mr Business" by Tom Browne, "A Man Like You" by Lemelle, "You've Gotta Believe" by Lovebug Starski, "Real Love" by Ritchie Family, "Give Me What I Want" by Bon Rock, "Be With You Tonight" by Total Contrast, "Say Something Love" by Kashif, and "I Want Your Love Back" by Celena Duncan. Outta Sight (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $16.99
Sweet 70s grooves, and a few key contemporary cuts too – a really wonderful set that's full of overlooked modern soul gems and a great mix of mellow groovers! The package really serves up some of our favorite sounds from the 70s – tracks that are upbeat, yet never uptempo – and find a way of stepping along a midtempo groove that leaves plenty of room for the vocalist to really soar in the lead – hitting these rich, righteous lines that sparkle strongly throughout! The set list is superb, and features even a few surprises to our ears long-trained on modern soul – and tracks include "There I Go" by The Notations, "I Hate Hate" by Razzy, "Pour Your Little Heart Out" by The Drifters, "Daylight" by Bobby Womack, "Got To Find Ms Right" by Buddy Miles, "Tripping Out (Featurecast 2013 re-edit)" by Curtis Mayfield, "What Do You See In Her" by Inell Young, "You Made A Believer Out Of Me" by Betty Lavette, "This Side Of Heaven" by Gavin Christopher, "Spoiled Like A Baby" by Mystique, "If You Really Need A Friend" by Bobby Foster, "Smoothie Pie" by Sky Hi, and "I Don't Know" by Glen Anthony Henry. Prestige, 1960. Used .... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Eric Dolphy's first meeting in the studio with trumpeter Booker Little – a brilliant batch of modernism that's easily one of the hippest records Little ever worked on! The Dolphy heard here is Eric at his most inventive – sharp-edged and angular one minute, then spiritually lyrical the next – playing flute, bass clarinet, and alto sax equally well on the record – and somehow managing to get Little to share his inspiration perfectly on every number. Other players include Jaki Byard on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – a rhythm team whose abilities are a big part of the success of the record – and titles include "Far Cry", "Mrs Parker Of KC", "Left Alone", "Ode To Charlie Parker", and "Miss Ann". Rare organ-laced late 60s garagey rock from the Aztecs! "World Of Woe" has woozy keyboards and raw rhythms that remind us of our favorite garage nuggets of the period, but works on a deeper level, thanks to some moody lyrics and surprisingly strong group harmonies. "Why Can't You Tell Me" is a more raucous, uptempo rager – but again, cuts deep thanks to some groovy harmonies. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Beach BoysMade In California 1962 to 2012 (6 CD set) ... CD
Capitol, 1960s/1970s. New Copy 6 CDs .... $139.99 149.98
An insanely big batch of Beach Boys rarities – a set that features 60 previously unreleased tracks, in a bundle that includes 174 titles in all – packaged in an ultra-cool puffy-covered book! The book's style is meant to replicate a high school yearbook from the old days – a format that's quite fitting for the package, given that the collection documents the group's 50 years in music – with photos, archive material, yearbook-like inscriptions from the group members, and even a copy of Brian Wilson's handwritten high school essay "My Philosophy"! Most other tracks are unusual versions, different mixes, session tracks, alternates, and even lots of live material too – and the set's a true treasure for diehard fans like us – who often love the group most the farthest we get away from the hits. Unreleased tracks include "This Whole World (acapella)", "I Can Hear Music (live Maryland 1975)", "Why Don't They Let Us Fall In Love", "You're Still A Mystery", "Goin To The Beach", "Sail Plane Song (2012 stereo mix)", "Amusement Parks USA (early version)", "I Get Around (mono with session intro)", "Surfers Rule (with session intro)", "It's Over Now (alt)", "Brian's Back (alt)", "Hushabye (BBC 1964", "California Feelin (demo)", "California Girls (lei'd in Hawaii version)", "Surf's Up (1967 version)", "Guess I'm Dumb (instrumental w/background vocals)", "It's About Time (live Chicago 1973)", "Runaway (live Chicago 1965 with concert promo intro)", "The Letter (Hawaii 1967 rehearsal)", "Wild Honey (live New Jersey 1972), "Home Recordings/Surfin Rehearsal Highlights", and plenty plenty more. One of the last great blues artists to record for the Jewel/Paula label – and a key figure in the Chicago underground as well! Buster Benton works here with a style that's definitely got the Chicago electric vibe of the 70s – but which also echoes earlier, rootsier modes as well – often delivered with a style that's a lot earthier than most of the other blues work coming out at the time on bigger labels – exactly the kind of sound that kept Benton a club favorite back in the day. Titles include "Sweet 94", "Spider In My Stew", "Sorry", "Lonesome For A Dime", "Do It In The Rain", "Lean On Me", "Love Like I Wanna", "Born With The Blues", "Dangerous Woman", and "Money Is The Name Of The Game". Brides Of FunkensteinNever Buy Texas From A Cowboy ... LP
Atlantic, 1979. Very Good .... $14.99
A tremendously soulful session from the late 70s P-Funk empire – sung by a group who were George Clinton's answer to Three Degrees, First Choice, and other female club trios of the time! The sound here is hardly as disco as those other groups, though – and there's plenty of funky Clinton touches in the mix – including rumbling basslines, raspy guitars, and a tightly focused groove that has the singers Dawn Silva, Sheila Horn, and Jeanette McGruder working equally with the larger group of musicians on the record. Production is by Bootsy Collins and Clinton, with horn arrangements by Fred Wesley – which makes for some great Horny Horns funk touches on most tracks! The title cut – "Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy" – runs on as a long P-Funk groove for about 15 minutes, but other tracks are shorter, and titles include "I'm Holding You Responsible", "Smoke Signals", "Party Up In Here", and "Didn't Mean To Fall In Love". OTOroku (UK), 2010. New Copy .... $26.99
Muscular angularity from the trio of reeds titan Peter Brotzmann, John Edwards on double bass and Steve Noble on drums – not as all out ferocious as some of the more frenzied Brotzmann recordings, though still plenty invigorating! The title would be sly whatever the record sounded like, but it's actually amusingly dichotomous, as this is really, really strong stuff. Brotzmann's tone is clear and fluid, and the pacing grows more and more busily as the record progresses, never flying out off the rails. Edwards and Noble are inventive and adaptable, so it's not terribly surprising that the trio works so brilliantly together despite this being billed as their first time working as unit, but it's exciting all the same! Jewel/Fuel 2000, Mid 60s. New Copy .... $10.99 11.98
Chicago blues, with a dose of soul – and a smoking set of early Jewel label recordings by George "Wild Child" Butler – most of which were produced by the legendary Willie Dixon! The tunes here have that gritty groove you might know from Chicago electric work on Chess – particularly by Jimmy Reed – a chugging, funky style that's mighty nice – and which works wonderful to help draw out the best inflections from Butler's bold vocals. Titles include "Gravy Child", "Axe & The Wind", "Open Up Baby", "Harmonica Player", "My Forty Year Old Woman", "She Walks Like My Mary Ann", and "Do Something Baby". CD

Doug CarnRevelation ... LP
Black Jazz, 1973. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
The Black Jazz recordings of Doug Carn are always a revelation – some of the most powerful, progressive work on the American underground of the early 70s – music that got Carn into way more record collections than you might expect! The sound here is a perfect summation of Doug's early genius – his own work on organ and keyboards, never overdone and mixed perfectly with a righteous array of acoustic sounds from Rene McLean on alto and tenor and Olu Dara on trumpet – both players who soar to the skies on waves of energy begun by Carn! Wife Jean Carn sings on a number of tracks – with this heavenly style that's mighty righteous – every bit as soulful as her later work at Philly International, but in a very different way. The set includes Doug's great reading of "Naima" – plus other wonderful cuts that include "Power & Glory", "Feel Free", "Jihad", "Fatherhood", and "God is One". LP, Vinyl record album

Benny CarterSwingin' The 20s (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Contemporary (Japan), 1958. Used .... $19.99
Benny Carter swings material from the 20s – but the results are a lot better than you might expect! We'll be honest in saying that the cover and theme of this one always made us figure the record was some sort of "old timey" affair – but Benny's surprisingly cool on the record, and is working in a small group mode that may well be even more deftly compelling than his earlier combo sides for Verve! The group here is only a quartet – with Benny on alto and trumpet, Earl Hines on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums – and it's possibly the modern rhythm section that gives the record a nicely soulful groove, and lets the tunes come off as more than just rehashed classics. Carter's tone on the alto is great – and very nicely recorded, with that edge that was showing up strongly in these later years – and titles include "Laugh Clown Laugh", "Thou Swell", "Who's Sorry Now", "A Monday Date", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "In A Little Spanish Town", and "Mary Lou". Johnny CashShe Used To Love Me A Lot (original version, 2013 version) ... 7-inch
Columbia/Legacy, Early 80s. New Copy (pic cover).... $8.99 9.98
A previously unheard Johnny Cash side from the early 80s – and a pretty strong one – with the original unreleased Billy Sherrill production on one side, and a new Elvis Costello produced version on the flip. The song is "She Used To Love Me A Lot", a great tune recorded by number of country heavies over the years, but it sounds tailor-made for Johnny's deep, soulful voice. It’s produced by Billy Sherrill, who is renowned for the string-laden countrypolitan sound, but he doesn't really go there with this song – instead flavoring it with mandolin, ome great, reverb-y electric guitar and some nice female backing vocals. Costello's mix is a bit more stripped down. Good stuff! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Don CherryMu First Part/Mu Second Part ... CD
BYG/Fuel 2000, 1970. Used .... $9.99
Don Cherry really breaks out here on his classic Mu sessions from France – using the new freedoms of post-68 Paris to explore themes at a level that would set the tone for generations to come! The album's very spare, and very improvised – with Cherry on pocket trumpet, piano, and wooden flute – plus a bit of percussion too – alongside drummer Ed Blackwell, who's equally unbridled – showing a huge evolution since the time both he and Don spent in the group of Ornette Coleman! There's a few echoes of the global elements that Cherry would later embrace more strongly in the 70s – but the core energy here is mostly improvised jazz, handled at a level that really makes a lot better use of the freedom than some of Don's contemporaries. Titles include "Total Vibration", "Sun Of The East", "Brilliant Action", "Terrestrial Beings", "Bamboo Night", "The Mysticism Of My Sound", "Psycho Drama", "Smiling Faces Going Places", "Teo Teo Can", and "Dollar Brand/Spontaneous Composing/Exert Man On The Moon". Epic, 1979. New Copy 2 CDs (reissue).... $15.99
Quite possibly the crowning masterpiece by The Clash – and a record that certainly pushed them out of the punk rock ghetto and into the collections of countless mainstream folks over the years! This is the set that really pushed the group over the top – the one that harnessed all the best energy of the previous two records and gave it a strong new focus – one that draws on roots as deep as the late 50s Elvis reference of the cover art, but which also bubbled over with newly approaching 80s musical ideas and politics! Yet the message never gets in the way of the guitar-heavy tuneful appeal of the songs – ringing out for decades on classics like "Train In Vain", "London Calling", "Spanish Bombs", "Lost In The Supermarket", "Guns Of Brixton", "Clampdown", and "Rudy Can't Fail". Epic, 1980. New Copy 3 CDs .... $18.99
The longest album ever from The Clash – a stunning triple LP set that really shows the group bristling with new ideas and energy throughout! There's a hell of a lot going on here – some cuts that are every bit as strong as the previous records, others that offer a few mis-steps but in a wonderfully playful way – and a few more that really hit this sort of unique mix of genres and politics that could only be summed up as Clash-like at its best! Bits of hip hop, reggae, new wave, funk, and more mix together beautifully – and the album's got a hell of a lot of charm and character, even if you're skipping past a few of the cuts you don't like as much as the others. 36 tracks in all – and titles include "The Magnificent Seven", "Hitsville UK", "Junco Partner", "The Leader", "Police On My Back", "Midnight Log", "The Call Up", "Washington Bullets", "Broadway", "Rebel Waltz", "Look Here", "The Crooked Beat", "Somebody Got Murdered", "Lose This Skin", "Charlie Don't Surf", "Kingston Advice", "Corner Soul", "Let's Go Crazy", "The Sound Of Sinners", "Living In Fame", "Silicone On Sapphire", and "Career Opportunities". Funky Dennis Coffey – classics from his years at Sussex and programmed with one funky instrumental jam after another – 20 tracks from one of the maddest, hardest grooving, most genre-bending figures from the 70s Detroit scene! There's a rawly rumbling underbelly to the material, funky drums and basslines that have been sample classics over the years, but the searing guitars and keyboards are just as cool. Some tracks have flutes and strings for a heavy soundtracky vibe, others keep it raw, and all of it is great. 20 tracks in all: "Ride Sally Ride", "Can You Feel It", "Chicano", "Taurus", "Scorpio", "Son Of Scorpio", "Capricorn's Thing", "Big City Funk", "Summer Time Girl", "Getting It On", "Wind Song", "Good Time Rhythm & Blues", "Theme From Enter The Dragon", "Love Song For Libra", "Garden Of The Moon" and more. New Sam CookeAin't That Good News (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
RCA/Abkco, 1964. New Copy .... $18.99
Good news galore from the great Sam Cooke – maybe THE album in which he fully shows off his unique contribution to soul music in the 60s – that mix of raw and sweet, easygoing and progressive – a mode that had a huge impact at the time, and went onto become a strong influence for years to come! Key proof of this approach is the landmark track "A Change is Gonna Come" – a slyly righteous track that became a huge Civil Rights anthem and has continued to have social power for many years. And even the more mundane titles have a fresh approach too – like the hit "Another Saturday Night", and a host of other gems that include "Home", "No Second Time", "The Riddle Song", "Good Times", "Meet Me At Mary's Place", and "Rome Wasn't Built In A Day". Columbia, 1958. New Copy (reissue).... $24.99
Although not actually a proper album – this is still one of the greatest Miles Davis albums of all time! Side one features 10 tracks from Miles' amazing soundtrack to the film Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud – with excellent work by French players Barney Wilen, Rene Urtreger, and Pierre Michelot, on haunting moody tracks like "Generique", "Lassassinat De Carala", "Au Bar Du Petit Bac", and "Dinner Au Motel". Great stuff – and with a wonderful sound that's like no other Miles album! Side 2 is equally great – as it features 3 classic sextet tunes – "On Green Dolphin Street", "Put Your Little Foot Right Out", and "Stella By Starlight" –peformed with Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, and Bill Evans in that amazing Kind Of Blue mode of perfection. Miles Davis/Thelonious MonkMiles & Monk At Newport (mono) (180 gram pressing) (2013 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Columbia, 1958/1963. New Copy (reissue).... $24.99
A slightly misleading record – but a great one nonetheless! From the title and cover, you might imagine that Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis were sharing the stage together at the Newport Jazz Festival – but instead, the album actually features separate performances by each artist – actually even recorded 5 years apart! The Miles Davis recording is from 1958 – a great year that has John Coltrane working with the group, alongside Wynton Kelly on piano, Cannonball Adderley on alto, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – performing lively versions of "Ah Leu Cha", "Straight No Chaser", "Fran Dance" and "Two Bass Hit". The Monk material is even more unique – recorded in 1963, with Monk's usual quartet of Charlie Rouse on tenor, Butch Warren on bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums – joined by the legendary Pee Wee Russell on clarinet – recently revived in jazz at the time, and displaying surprisingly modernist tendencies! Both Monk tracks are long – and include versions of "Nutty" and "Blue Monk". LP, Vinyl record album

Sweet G-Funk from DJ Cam – a great set of instrumentals that are first inspired by electro funk from the start of the 80s, then the later use of samples and beats from those tunes in west coast hip hop! The instrumental presentation keeps the cuts from ever sounding kitchy or copycat – as there's no rhymes or lyrics, and instead a great focus on the kinds of beats, basslines, and keyboard bits that we've always loved in Cam's music! Some tunes are very electro, others have a warmer glow overall – and the whole set's a great chapter in the always-great body of work from this wonderful French talent. Two different Jimmy Stewart comedy soundtracks from the 60s – both of them nice! First up is Dear Brigitte – an overlooked 1965 score by George Duning – done with a mix of the playful modes you'd expect from the story, and some of those great deeper dramatic touches that Duning used in more serious soundtracks – a really rich mixing of modes with a sound that's much stronger than we expected! Titles include "On To BBs", "The Captain", "Magical Moment", "Puzzled Cap'n", "Hey Dad", "Is It A Trick", and "She Sank". Next is an even groovier record – a rare non RCA Henry Mancini soundtrack from the early 60s – the score to Mr Hobbs Takes A Vacation, done with all the best mix of jazz and groovy elements we love in classic Mancini! Instrumentation mixes a key electric guitar melody with some lighter touches on woodwinds – really getting the most out of the melody with some shifts in timing and tone, juxtaposed with a few numbers that are even more playful! Titles include "Barn Swallow", "Something For Lauri", "Cream Puff", "Up His Nose", "A Month Off", and "Rudders & Sails". Sublime country rock and superb vocals from the Everly Brothers – an album as close to our hearts as the much more hipster-celebrated work of the era by Gram Parsons, the Byrds and others! The Everlys grasped onto their significance throughout the 60s by hopping from trend to trend with little success – but they finally nailed it in 1968 with this effort. (Artistically, if not commercially.) The boys apply their staggering harmonies to country and country-ish material, adding their own unique spin to the tunes – and earnestly work in some montages of their family radio shows from the early 50s! It's easily their most endearing work of the 60s. Produced by Lenny Waronker with strings by Nick DeCaro. Includes wonderful versions of Jimmie Rodgers' "T For Texas", "Shady Grove", Randy Newman's "Illinois", Ray Price's "You Done Me Wrong", Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried" and "Sing Me Back Home", plus "Ventura Boulvard" and "Turn Around" written by Ron Elliot of Beau Brummels. A really wonderful project that was years in the making – a mix of American club and Brazilian elements – put together by a group that includes members of Azymuth and Banda Black Rio, as well as the legendary Arthur Verocai! Jose Roberto Bertrami's the strongest contributor here – and the music really echoes that great late 70s/early 80s point when the Azymuth fusion groove crossed over into tighter, funkier territory – coming off here with a sound that's got really universal appeal and a wickedly classic vibe overall – like some unusual cross-breeding of Brazilian grooves and Salsoul Records! Vocals are by Mia Mendes and Marcina Arnold, but the instrumentation is even better than the lyrics – filled with jazzy touches, blended with bits of strings, and perfectly produced all the way through. Frank Frost really kicks it hard on this set of classic recordings from the 60s – a batch of tracks that easily show why Frost was one of the funkiest bluesmen to record for the Jewel/Paula label! Frank sings and plays harmonica – but an equal attraction here is the rhythms – which are often tight and vamping, and sometimes hard and heavy too – definitely more funk-based at points than the more common rolling blues of the time – although when Frost hits more standard modes, he's still pretty great too. The heavy bag here is a bluesy one – as Lowell Fullsom's working in territory that's got a lot of rootsy, almost southern blues in the mix – but which still cracks out at times with his hipper, more funk-tuned groove! There's a few tracks on here that hearken towards the "Tramp" groove from his Kent years – like "Lady In The Rain" and "Sleeper" – both of which have a nicely funky undercurrent and vamping guitar that really snaps along with the rhythm. Other numbers have a straighter blues feel, but one that still has a sinister approach that goes way past cliches for the college crowd – showing Lowell to be firmly in charge, no matter what the setting. Tracks include "Sleeper", "Lady In The Rain", "Man Of Motion", "Why Don't We Do It In The Road", "Look At You Baby", "Trouble Everywhere", and "This Feeling". New Jef GilsonJef Gilson Et Malagasy (4CD set) (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... CD
Jazzman (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 4CD .... $24.99
An amazing blend of jazz and global elements – and some of the most exciting material ever from French jazzman Jef Gilson! Gilson was a modernist right from the start – an artist whose piano work of the 60s was on a par with Martial Solal, and who was already beginning to branch out by the end of the decade into a range of unusual projects! The material here has Jef really coming into his own – exploring the sounds and styles of Madagascar with his Malagasy group – one of the most important cross-cultural acts on the European scene of the 70s – with a power and presence that's only being fully appreciated today. This beautiful set brings together four rare albums by Gilson and the group – originally issued on his own Palm Records label, and lovingly repackaged by Jazzman with full notes on the music in both French and English. The style is quite unique – sometimes electrified a bit on tracks that feature guitar and Gilson on Fender Rhodes – sometimes more acoustic and organic when the percussion takes over a bit – and always with these wonderful reed passages that reach out with lots of spiritual energy, and tones that rival the best of the post-Coltrane generation in the US. Different albums include Malagasy/Gilson, Madagascar Now, Malagasy At Newport-Paris, and Les Touches Noires – the last of which features a number of unissued or rare tracks by the group. Really wonderful stuff – and work we'd put up there with the best MPS Jazz Meets World recordings, or 70s treasures by Mulatu, or some of Lloyd Miller's best! CD

Death Waltz (UK), 2013. New Copy .... $14.99 15.98
Legendary Italian prog combo Goblin – reunited in the studio on the cusp of their 2013 tour – and sounding as vital as ever! This great EP is a slight departure for the Death Waltz label – in that it's a contemporary set, rather than a straight up soundtrack – but the group themselves are revisiting their soundtrack classics. It includes new versions of 3 classics from their Dario Argento canon – "Profondo Rosso", "Suspiria" and "Tenebre" – plus "Roller" – the title track from what's probably their greatest non-soundtrack album. LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition 2013 tour EP – on red vinyl!)

Richard L GrahamGovernment Issue – Comics For The People 1940s to 2000s (paperback) ... Book
Abrams Comic Arts, 2009. New Copy Book .... $6.99 29.95
Cool comics from a very unlikely source – publications put together by the US government to spread ideas and inform the public – many of which were handled by top comics talents from the mainstream! The quality of this material is surprisingly wonderful – not schlocky propaganda, but thoughtfully-scripted, well-penned comics that have the same sort of appeal as work from the cleaner, more wholesome side of the Silver Age! Artists include Neal Adams, Charles Biro, Kurt Schaffenberger, Joe Kubert, Milt Caniff, and many others – including a fair bit of unknown illustrators too. The book is surprisingly fun, and a much-needed look at this lesser-known strand of 20th Century comics. 308 pages, full color, and softcover. Book

Grand SlamLifetimers For The Funk – In The Studio 1985 to 2010 ... CD
TNT Productions (Germany), Late 80s/1990s/2000s. New Copy 2 CDs .... $18.99
A great collection of work from Grand Slam – a German funk combo who were serving up a classic take on American sounds long before the Daptone and Soul Fire generation! These guys are equally influenced by James Brown and George Clinton – especially the latter, given the bass-heavy riffs the group use in their music – and the number of times they get some help from P-Funk alumnus Gary Mudbone Cooper on some of these cuts! The vibe is more late 70s ensemble funk than gritty funky 45 modes – but Grand Slam definitely get their groove right – and have some mighty tight instrumentation to live up to their inspirations. 2CD set brings together a lot of work from the group's first 25 years in music – including some rare tracks, previously unreleased numbers, and a few cuts on CD for the first time ever. Titles include "Goin Out (orig demo)", "Da Rain", "Perfect Day", "Rock My World", "Get Your Own Thing (orig demo)", "Light My Fire", "If I Had", "U Blind", "Hunk/Fop", "Real XTC", and "Manik Botanik". Buddy GuyThis Is The Beginning – The Best Of The Artistic, Cobra, & USA Sessions ... CD
Fuel 2000, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy .... $11.99 12.98
Great early work from the legendary Buddy Guy – rare Chicago material cut for small labels in the years before and during Buddy's initial work for Chess – some of it recorded under the name of different singers in the lead, all of it featuring Guy's amazing work on guitar! The package brings together these sessions with some good notes that tell the tale of Buddy's early years – and although Guy's non-Chess work on was from this time is relatively spare, the CD expands things out nicely with a few session tracks and alternates too. Titles include "Try To Quit You Baby", "You Sure Can't Do", "This Is The End", "Baby Don't You Wanna Come Home", "The Way You Been Treating Me", "You Sure Can't Do", and "I Hope You Come Back" – plus tracks from a session with Jesse Fortune that include "Too Many Cooks", "God's Gift To Man", "Heavy Heart Beat", and "Good Things". Leigh Harline/Buddy BregmanVisit To A Small Planet/Delicate Delinquent ... CD
20th Century/Kritzerland, 1957/1960. New Copy .... $19.99
Two Jerry Lewis soundtracks – back to back on a single CD! First up is the very cool Visit To A Small Planet from 1960 – a Jerry Lewis sci-fi flick, done with a cool mix of sprightly themes and spacey touches. There's a few nice theremin moments, mixed with these nice orchestral passages that use strings and woodwinds to create some other-worldly elements inflected with more comedic styles overall. Titles include "Desdemona's Lament", "Arrival On Earth", "To Earth", "Crazy Driver", and "Tear Gas/Conclusion". The Delicate Delinquent is a urban-themed film, scored with lots of nice jazzy touches by Buddy Bregman – a composer who knows how to perfectly balance swing and sentiment, goofball energy and some of the more earnest passages that come out in the narrative. Titles include "The Cop", "A Near Miss", "The Fight", "It's A Boy", "The Bout", and "Bridge To Street/Record Shop". CD

Leon HaywoodKeep It In The Family ... LP
20th Century, 1974. Very Good+ .... $8.99
Leon's moving from the rawer soul of his earlier days, but he still hasn't hit the sly LA funk sound of his "Freaky To You" years. The record's a good batch of tracks that show the LA sound of the 60s turning into the smooth slinky one of the 70s – and Gene Page is at hand to handle the arrangements and musical backing for Leon, who produced the record himself. Tracks include "Keep It In The Family", "Long As There's You (I Got Love)", "BMF Beautiful", and "When It Comes Down On You In The Middle Of The Night". LP, Vinyl record album

Leon HaywoodNaturally (with bonus tracks) ... CD
20th Century/Big Break (UK), 1980. New Copy .... $14.99
One of the best records ever by Leon Haywood! Leon, naturally, delivers masterfully here – on a funkier record than we would have expected for the dawn of the 80s, with a couple equally great smoother moments – and it features a couple of his bigger hit singles, to boot! On one hand, Leon is skirting the trendier studio touches of the immediate post disco era, by working in more timeless funky soul style. On the other hand, he embraces the coming rap revolution on the closing "Lovers Rap", and proves he can hang with the changing scene as well as anybody. Great stuff! "Daydream", "Don't Push It Don't Force It", "Love is What We Came Here For", "If You're Lookin' For A Night Of Fun (Look Past Me, I'm Not The One)", "Who You Been Giving It Up To?", "That's What Time It Is", and "If You're Lookin' for a Night of Fun". Bonus tracks on this version from Big Break include "Daydream (12" Disco Mix)", plus the single versions of "If You're Lookin' For A Night Of Fun (Look Past Me, I'm Not The One)", "Don't Push It Don't Force It" and "Daydream". Louis Hjulmand, Bent Axen, Alex RielJazz Og Poesi (10 inch vinyl – 200 gram pressing) ... LP
Louisiana Gyldendal/SeriE.WOC (Italy), 1963. New Copy (reissue).... $49.99
A really unusual project – and one of the most compelling meetings of jazz and spoken word we've ever seen! The set features instrumental tracks penned by Danish vibes player Louis Hjulmand – each based around a different poem which is presented before the music – which is played by Louis on vibes, Bent Axen on piano, Benny Nielsen on bass, and Alex Riel on drums! Poems are written and delivered by Jorgen Leth, Jorgen Sonne, Klaus Rifbjerg, Robert Corydon, and Jorge Gustava Brandt – all in Danish, with a quality that's oddly dark in the recording technique – and seems to set a special stage for the instrumetal moments to follow. The original 10" recording is quite a rare gem – and titles include "Til Komeda", "Turistplakat", "Opbrud", "New Salesburg", "Tre Koncepter", and "Aldring". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited to 300 copies – in a special sleeve, with very faithful cover reproduction too!)
