A very cool inner sleeve for CDs – perfect for storing them in LP-styled covers! The clear plastic sleeves are similar to the ones you get in Japanese Paper Sleeve packages – and they're great for using if you lose your sleeves from any of those, or if you've bought LP-styled CD packages from other outlets – and want something to protect the CD inside! CD Plastic Sleeves20 Polyclear Japanese Open Top Plastic Sleeves – Multi-Disc CD ... Record Care
Nagaoka (Japan), New Copy ... $4.99
A cool open-top plastic sleeve for storing your CDs! This one works like the LP and 45 sleeves we stock – in that the plastic hugs your CD package on the front and back, and on the sides and bottom – but the top is open, so you can slide out the jewel case for easy access when listening! There's no flap at all to get in the way – and the sleeves are great if you store your CDs on shelves vertically, and don't like the outside cases to get scratched up. This version fits a range of multi-disc packages – including older-styled jewel cases that handle 2 to 4 CDs, and most of the contemporary larger slipcover styled CD packages too. Record Care

Thelonious MonkBrilliant Corners (20 bit mastering) ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1956. Used ... $8.99
A brilliant title for this brilliant album from Thelonious Monk – a set that really has him coming back strongly in the second half of the 50s – with a new talent for arrangements that really goes past his previous work! Monk's piano and compositions are every bit as great as before – but what really makes the album amazing is his ear for horn lines – particularly the alto of Ernie Henry and tenor of Sonny Rollins, both of whom add in an additional angular quality to Monk's groove. Clark Terry replaces Henry on a few numbers – and the rhythm is from the wonderful team of Oscar Pettiford and Max Roach – on classic long takes of "Brilliant Corners", "Ba-Lue Bolivar Blues Are", "Pannonica", and "Bemsha Swing". Wes MontgomeryIncredible Jazz Guitar Of Wes Montgomery (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Riverside, 1960. Used ... $6.99
They're not kidding with the title of this one – because although the record was only Wes Montgomery's second album as a leader, he was already making plenty of waves with the sound of his guitar! The session lines Wes up with the very tight rhythm team of Tommy Flanagan on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Albert Heath on drums – all of whom lay back and mostly let Wes take center stage – sparkling on a number of original tunes that include "West Coast Blues", "Mister Walker", and "D Natural Blues". Other tracks include a great fast take on Sonny Rollins' "Airegin", plus "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "Polka Dots & Moonbeams". CD

VariousEthiopiques Volume 20 – Either/Orchestra Live In Addis ... CD
Buda (France), 2005. Used 2CD ... $8.99
An amazingly great set from Either/Orchestra – easily their finest album ever, and a wicked batch of Ethiopian funk! The set's a very faithful homage to the best Ethiopian styles of the 70s – with lots of echoes of the generation of Mulatu, who also makes a guest appearance himself on the album! Bits of Afro Funk come into play with more complicated jazz – making for a really unique approach to the music that stays faithful to its roots, but also somehow extrapolates the best elements and pulls them even more strongly forward. Features percussion by Mulatu, tenor sax by Getachew Mekurya, and vocals by Bahta Gebre-Heywet, Michael Belayneh, and Tsendia Gebre-Marqos. 2CD set includes the tracks "Soul Tezeta", "Amlak Abet Abet", "Muziqawi Silt", "Yezemed Yebada", "Eyeye", "Embi Ba", "Shellela", "Bati", "Feger Aydelem Wey", and "Keset Eswa Betcha". Almost a tribute to the sound of the Ethiopiques series – played with some of its key stars from older years! CD

PTG (Netherlands), Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99
A sweet set of grooves from this always-great series – served up with a special focus on the kinds of snapping sounds that were making the scene in the early 80s! Nearly all the tracks on the set were recorded in 1983, and capture a special point in funky soul – a time when the music was really moving past familiar modes from the disco years, and coming across with a leaner, meaner groove that's plenty heavy on sweet beats and keyboards! Titles include "One Mind Two Hearts" by Paradise, "Mr Business" by Tom Browne, "A Man Like You" by Lemelle, "You've Gotta Believe" by Lovebug Starski, "Real Love" by Ritchie Family, "Give Me What I Want" by Bon Rock, "Be With You Tonight" by Total Contrast, "Say Something Love" by Kashif, and "I Want Your Love Back" by Celena Duncan. A stone classic from the Modern Jazz Quartet – recorded back when the group still featured Kenny Clarke in its membership, but already with some of the more serious, somber tones that would mark the combo's more famous years! Tracks here are from a variety of sessions in 1953, 1954, and 1955 – and trace an evolution of the MJQ style from initial more composed renditions of bop and modern jazz, to some of the more ambitious colors and tones of the Lewis-penned songbook. Titles include longish readings of "Django" and "La Ronde Suite", plus "Milano", "But Not For Me", "The Queen's Fancy", and "Delaunay's Dilemma". CD

New Eric DolphyOutward Bound (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Prestige/Fantasy, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
Eric Dolphy's first album ever as a leader – recorded almost immediately after his arrival on the New York scene! The sound here is already bolder and stronger than the Dolphy experiments on the west coast – sharp-edged and freely exploratory, in a way that pushes the playful lyricism of the Chico Hamilton years aside, and reaches out into the new territory hinted at by the title! The group is a quintet that features Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Jaki Byard on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – and the overall sound is a beautiful mix of modernist hard bop and some of Dolphy's later freer styles. Dolphy plays his usual mix of alto, flute, and bass clarinet – and the tracks include "245", "Miss Toni", "Les", and "GW". CD

Universal (Brazil), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 20CDs ... Out Of Stock
Vinicius De Moraes is an artist with the soul of a poet, but a hell of a recording career too – one that spans the earliest years of bossa nova, which he helped to create – and runs through some tremendous collaborations in the 60s and 70s as well! This wonderful set brings together all the important Vinicius De Moraes albums for Philips – including a number that have never been on CD before – recordings that take on a wonderful range of styles and different approaches, each very well suited to the nature of the specific projects, or the lyrical needs of the master! Some of the most important records here are the collaborations – including early Black Orpheus work with Jobim, Afro-Sambas with Baden Powell, and later duets with Toquinho – but there's also important soundtracks, music and poetry projects, and some very rare material too! The collection features two separate CDs of rare material, unusual cuts, and singles – Pela Luz Dols Olhos Teus 1 & 2 – plus the individual albums Orfeu Da Conceicao, Vinicius & Odette Lara, Vinicius Caymmi No Zum Zum, De Vinicius E Baden with Ciro Monteiro, Os Afro Sambas, Vinicius Poesia E Cancao Ao Vivo Vols 1 & 2, Garota De Ipanema soundtrack, Jesus Cristo Superstar, Vinicius Canta Nossa Vilha Gabriela, Vinicius & Toquinho (1974), Vinicius/Toquinho (1975), Deus Lhe Pague, Antologia Poetica, 10 Anos De Toquinho & Vinicius, Ump Pouco De Ilusao, and A Arca De Noe Vols 1 & 2. A snapping collection of soul from the 80s – 2CDs worth of music, and a host of wonderful groovers from the post-disco years! There's plenty here for an 80s grooving dancefloor – and titles include "Let It All Blow" by Dazz Band, "I Am Somebody" by Glenn Jones, "Stone Love" by Kashif, "Just For The Night" by Evelyn Champagne King, "What Do I Do (M&M mix)" by Phil Fearon & Galaxy, "Pickin Up Pieces" by Brenda K Starr, "Act Like You Know" by Fat Larry's Band, "Outstanding" by Gap Band, "Encore (live)" by Cheryl Lynn, "This Beat Is Mine" by Vicki D, "Jam On It" by Newcleus, "I Love You More" by Rene & Angela, "No Way" by Bobbi Humphrey, "In Your Car" by The Cool Notes, "Right On Track" by Breakfast Club, and "You Can't Have My Love" by The Jones Girls. Allman Brothers1971 Fillmore East Recordings (4LP box set – on 200 gram vinyl) ... LP
Universal, 1971. New Copy 4 LPs ... $72.99 79.98
Soulful southern rock at its absolute finest – and the Allman Brothers at their peak! The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings box set puts together performances from a legendary series of concerts the band played that year – originally serving as the source material for the classic At Fillmore East live album, but as geniunely great as that album is, it only hints at the expansive improvisational genius that happened live on stage. This set does a terrific job of putting that on display – and it's brilliant stuff! The 4LP version is jam-packed with both consise tunes and freewheeling jams – all recorded by Tom Dowd – on March 12 and March 13 (2 sets each night), plus a closing show on June 27. It's also heavy duty and top quality – with hours of essential recordings from those 5 sets – on 4 X 200 gram LPs packaged in a heavy outer box! Includes "Statesboro Blues", "Trouble No More", "Don't Keep Me Wondering", In Memory Of Elisabeth Reed", "Midnight Rider", "One Way Out", "Stormy Monday", "Hot 'Lanta", "You Don't Love Me", "Whipping Post", "Mountain Jam" and "Drunk Hearted Boy" – many running WELL north of the of the 10 minutes mark – as Allmans will be Allmans. Impulse, 1968. Very Good Gatefold ... $24.99
One of the last albums that Ayler ever recorded – and one of his most memorable! The record shows Ayler at the crossroads, filled with emotion and meaning, struggling to convey his message to a lager audience. At times, he takes a strange soul/jazz format to do so, and has tracks featuring backing by "the Soul Singers" – at others, he plays solo, with some of the most plaintive tones he ever laid down on wax! The record features an incredibly haunting "Message From Albert", plus the tracks "New Generation", "Sun Watcher", "New Ghosts", and "Free At Last". Completely fascinating, and a record that really makes you wonder what would have happened had he not died a mysterious young death! LP, Vinyl record album

An understated masterpiece from The Beach Boys – a record that's probably best known for its inclusion of some key tracks from the Smile sessions – but an album that stands pretty darn nicely on its own! The group are really maturing here – and the mix of Smile-era songs and some of their later ones is really great – a wonderful follow-up to material explored on Friends, and a great hint at the genius to come on Sunflower. The album's essential listening if you dig post-Pet Sounds Beach Boys – especially before they hit their mix of nostalgia and indulgence in the 70s – and titles include the sublime "Cabinessence", plus "Do It Again", "I Can Hear Music", "Be With Me", "All I Want To Do", "I Want To Sleep", and "The Nearest Faraway Place". One of the last great blues artists to record for the Jewel/Paula label – and a key figure in the Chicago underground as well! Buster Benton works here with a style that's definitely got the Chicago electric vibe of the 70s – but which also echoes earlier, rootsier modes as well – often delivered with a style that's a lot earthier than most of the other blues work coming out at the time on bigger labels – exactly the kind of sound that kept Benton a club favorite back in the day. Titles include "Sweet 94", "Spider In My Stew", "Sorry", "Lonesome For A Dime", "Do It In The Rain", "Lean On Me", "Love Like I Wanna", "Born With The Blues", "Dangerous Woman", and "Money Is The Name Of The Game". Some of the most dynamic music we've heard from Anthony Braxton in years – a set of duets recorded with European bassist Joelle Leandre! Doug CarnRevelation ... LP
Black Jazz, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
The Black Jazz recordings of Doug Carn are always a revelation – some of the most powerful, progressive work on the American underground of the early 70s – music that got Carn into way more record collections than you might expect! The sound here is a perfect summation of Doug's early genius – his own work on organ and keyboards, never overdone and mixed perfectly with a righteous array of acoustic sounds from Rene McLean on alto and tenor and Olu Dara on trumpet – both players who soar to the skies on waves of energy begun by Carn! Wife Jean Carn sings on a number of tracks – with this heavenly style that's mighty righteous – every bit as soulful as her later work at Philly International, but in a very different way. The set includes Doug's great reading of "Naima" – plus other wonderful cuts that include "Power & Glory", "Feel Free", "Jihad", "Fatherhood", and "God is One". LP, Vinyl record album

Clarence CarterSlip Away – The Ultimate Clarence Carter 1966 to 1971 (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $26.99
Sublime sounds from Clarence Carter – wonderful work from his singles for Fame Records – a wealth of great music from a time when Carter was really coming into his own! Clarence was great right from the start, but here you can really hear him finding his own voice – that all-knowing, storytelling approach that could make even a simple lyric spin out in a way that was totally captivating – with a quality that set Carter apart from some of his more tear-jerked southern soul contemporaries, into a space of class and confidence that would serve him well for years to come! Every number here was recorded at the Fame Studios, with the kind of killer backings you'd expect from the Muscle Shoals team – and the 2LP set features 24 titles that include "Slip Away", "Looking For A Fox", "The Feeling Is Right", "Snatching It Back", "Patches", "I Found What I Wanted", "Look What I Got", "Too Weak To Fight", "I'm Qualified", "Tell Daddy", "Think About It", and lots more! New Carter BrothersEssential Carter Brothers ... CD
Jewel/Fuel 2000, Late 60s. Used ... $9.99
A great collection of 60s southern blues from The Carter Brothers – featuring tracks recorded as singles for Jewel Records, plus additional solo and previously unreleased numbers! And although the group came from and played for the blues circuit, they also had a nicely electrified sound that gave some of their work a similarity to the growing funky sounds of the southern scene at the time – not really funk outright, but chunky and rhythmic, with a nice mix of electric piano and guitar. Vocals are still pretty bluesy, but also nicely soulful – and the set features a total of 20 tracks that include "Booby Trap Baby", "I Feel Alright", "Why Baby Why (parts 1 & 2)", "Hey It's Alright", "Southern Country Boy", "Booze In The Bottle", "Roast Possum", and "I Don't Care". Chi Sound/20th Century, 1980. Very Good+ ... $2.99
A nice record of modern soul that got a bit overlooked at the time because of the poor fate of the Chi-Sound label. The record's filled with Chicago soul talent like Tom Tom 84, Sonny Sanders, and Carl Davis, and it's a good updating of Gene's Chicago soul sound towards a style that's more modern soul-oriented. We've got a huge soft spot for the track "Does She Have A Friend?", which is a nice two-step groover, and the LP includes a number of other nice ones like "All About The Paper", "Let Me Make Love to You", and a remake of his classic, called "Rainbow '80". Chi Sound/20th Century, 1978. Very Good+ ... $3.99
The legendary Gene Chandler gets down, and gets down good – in this classic late 70s set of clubby numbers and upbeat groovers! The set's one of the best moments on the Chi-Soul series from producer Carl Davis – and features a nicely evolved version of earlier Chicago soul modes from Tom Tom 84 and Sonny Sanders – both of whom push an older Brunswick style into some smoother, more sophisticated modern soul territory! Chandler's vocals are wonderful, as always – and have a catchy snapping feel on the groovers, mixed with surprisingly deep soul on the few mellower moments. Titles include a remake of "Please Sunrise", plus "I'm The Travelin Kind", "Get Down", "Tomorrow I May Not Feel The Same", "Greatest Love Ever Known", and "What Now". LP, Vinyl record album

A current Italian vocalist – but one who's taking a lot of cues from older singers of the 50s and 60s – particularly those of the ice-blonde sexpot variety! Anna's working here in a blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation – often given a retro-styled mode that reminds us of some of the Irma La Douce artists in recent years – but which also gets a bit more abstract as the set moves on. From covers of tunes like "Call Me" and "An Occasional Man", Anna moves into more personal original material like "Swimming" and "Could Be", which have a more modern, chilled out sort of groove that pushes the album into new territory. Other tracks include "Hopelessly Fool", "A Guy What Takes His Time", "U Go To My Head", "Adrian", and "Love Is A Reason". CD

Fuel 2000, Late 60s. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
Searing early solo sides from James Cotton – material recorded in the late 60s, at a time when Cotton was really finding his groove! James serves up plenty of the sharp harmonica lines promised in the title, over backings that show plenty of influence from 60s soul as well – that new punch that bluesmen of his generation were using to push out their sounds in a fresher hybrid of initial Chicago electric modes! The notes on the set are a bit spare on details for the sessions, and the work's got a nicely rough-edged quality that almost feels live at times – or at least "live in studio". Titles include "Dealing With The Devil", "Polly Put The Kettle On", "V8 Ford Blues", "Jelly Jelly", "Feelin Good", "I Need You So Bad", "It Ain't Right", "Off The Wall", "There Is Something On Your Mind", and "The Creeper". RCA/Made In Germany (Germany), 1976. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
A mad bit of music from the great Bo Diddley – recorded after his early 70s funk records on Chess – but with a similar genre-tripping style! The album's got this full-on fuzzy feel right from the start – put together by producer Ron Terry, who matches Diddley's wilder side with some surprising guest appearances from Alvin Lee and Elvin Bishop on guitar, Billy Joel on keyboards, Carmine Appice on drums, and Joe Cocker on vocals! Despite the presence of these rock heavyweights, the set's all Bo Diddley's own – without any of the more watered-down crossover aspects you might expect. There's a nice sharp edge on all numbers – really preserving the funky undercurrents – and titles include "Ride The Water", "Drag On", "Kill My Body", and "Not Fade Away" – plus the super-extended "Bo Diddley Jam", which runs for over 15 minutes, and brings together a host of older Diddley tunes in a funky megamix! CD also features three bonus tracks – "Mona", "Emily", and "You Can't Judge A Book" – all from a 1984 live set in Germany. CD

Heavy funk from the legendary Bo Diddley – one of his amazing comeback albums from the early 70s for Chess, all of which are plenty darn great! For this set, Bo's traded in the scratchy guitar mode of his classic work for a sweeter, tighter funk-based sound – a groove that's supported strongly with electric studio arrangements from Wade Marcus – used here in very nice contrast to Diddley's rougher vocals and guitar! The style's got a bit more electric jazz touches than some of the other Chess blues funk records from the time – but the overall sound is still bound to please any funk fan – and titles include "Bite You", "Stop The Pusher", "You've Got a Lot Of Nerve", and the breakbeat classic "Hit Or Miss"! Two different Jimmy Stewart comedy soundtracks from the 60s – both of them nice! First up is Dear Brigitte – an overlooked 1965 score by George Duning – done with a mix of the playful modes you'd expect from the story, and some of those great deeper dramatic touches that Duning used in more serious soundtracks – a really rich mixing of modes with a sound that's much stronger than we expected! Titles include "On To BBs", "The Captain", "Magical Moment", "Puzzled Cap'n", "Hey Dad", "Is It A Trick", and "She Sank". Next is an even groovier record – a rare non RCA Henry Mancini soundtrack from the early 60s – the score to Mr Hobbs Takes A Vacation, done with all the best mix of jazz and groovy elements we love in classic Mancini! Instrumentation mixes a key electric guitar melody with some lighter touches on woodwinds – really getting the most out of the melody with some shifts in timing and tone, juxtaposed with a few numbers that are even more playful! Titles include "Barn Swallow", "Something For Lauri", "Cream Puff", "Up His Nose", "A Month Off", and "Rudders & Sails". Booker ErvinIn Between ... LP
Blue Note, 1968. Very Good+ ... $24.99
One of the last records that Booker Ervin ever recorded, and one of the best! There's a depth of tone and conception here that goes far beyond even Ervin's already-great albums for Prestige – a mix of modernism and soulful expression that really points the way towards jazz expression in the 70s – although sadly, Booker was to leave the planet before getting a chance to stretch out in that era. All 6 tracks on the album are originals – and they sparkle with the imagination found on some of the most top-shelf Blue Notes of the time – work by Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, or Wayne Shorter – played by a group that includes the amazing Richard Williams on trumpet (almost worth the price of the record alone), Bobby Few on piano, Lenny McBrowne on drums, and the little-known Cevera Jefferies on bass. Loads of dark edges, searing solos, and plenty of free flights into the sky – on titles that include "The In Between", "Tyra", "The Muse", "Mour", "Sweet Pea", and "Largo". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the best records in years from the mighty Far Out label – and a set that really takes the imprint back to its roots! The name of the record echoes the first Friends From Rio session that launched Far Out almost two decades ago – and like that classic, this one's a collaborative effort between a range of Brazilian and British talents – served up in a style that bridges the gap between older bossa and more contemporary modes! Cool comics from a very unlikely source – publications put together by the US government to spread ideas and inform the public – many of which were handled by top comics talents from the mainstream! The quality of this material is surprisingly wonderful – not schlocky propaganda, but thoughtfully-scripted, well-penned comics that have the same sort of appeal as work from the cleaner, more wholesome side of the Silver Age! Artists include Neal Adams, Charles Biro, Kurt Schaffenberger, Joe Kubert, Milt Caniff, and many others – including a fair bit of unknown illustrators too. The book is surprisingly fun, and a much-needed look at this lesser-known strand of 20th Century comics. 308 pages, full color, and softcover. Book

Grand SlamLifetimers For The Funk – In The Studio 1985 to 2010 ... CD
TNT Productions (Germany), Late 80s/1990s/2000s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $6.99
A great collection of work from Grand Slam – a German funk combo who were serving up a classic take on American sounds long before the Daptone and Soul Fire generation! These guys are equally influenced by James Brown and George Clinton – especially the latter, given the bass-heavy riffs the group use in their music – and the number of times they get some help from P-Funk alumnus Gary Mudbone Cooper on some of these cuts! The vibe is more late 70s ensemble funk than gritty funky 45 modes – but Grand Slam definitely get their groove right – and have some mighty tight instrumentation to live up to their inspirations. 2CD set brings together a lot of work from the group's first 25 years in music – including some rare tracks, previously unreleased numbers, and a few cuts on CD for the first time ever. Titles include "Goin Out (orig demo)", "Da Rain", "Perfect Day", "Rock My World", "Get Your Own Thing (orig demo)", "Light My Fire", "If I Had", "U Blind", "Hunk/Fop", "Real XTC", and "Manik Botanik". Al GreenCall Me ... LP
Hi Records, 1973. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Al Green, 1973 – what could be better? The king of Memphis soul is at the height of his powers here – working in a setting that yielded less chart hits than some of his other albums for Hi Records, but which is still as sublime as the rest – thanks to an undeniable studio magic guided by Willie Mitchell! The sound is full, but never slick or smooth – and Al's vocals are tremendous throughout (but honestly, did you expect anything less?) Titles include "Call Me (Come Back Home)", "Here I Am (Come & Take Me)", "Funny How Time Slips Away", and the beautiful "Have You Been Making Out OK?" LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover has split seams & ringwear.)

Buck HammerDiscovery Of Buck Hammer ... LP
Hanover, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Pretty darn strange one, and an album that unearths the talent of supposed Alabama boogie-woogie pianist Buck Hammer – who is actually Steve Allen, playing under a different name! The liner notes claim that Hammer was a legendary player in the mid 20th century, but due to reasons only he could explain, he almost never left his hometown of Glen Springs, Alabama. The session as even explained as being one of Hammer's few trips from his home town, to Nashville in 1956, where he cut the sides that would become this album. This rare Hanover release comes with a beautiful pen and ink drawing on the cover of Hammer in action – with a David Stone Martin-esque drawing that adds to the fake "authenticity" of the album. (Hey, it had us fooled – until a customer wrote to tell us the real story!) Titles include loads of originals like "Fink's Mules", "Blue's Blues", "Golly Gee Boogie", and "Jungle Boogie". LP, Vinyl record album
(In really nice shape! Cover has some light wear.)

Leigh Harline/Buddy BregmanVisit To A Small Planet/Delicate Delinquent ... CD
20th Century/Kritzerland, 1957/1960. New Copy ... $19.99
Two Jerry Lewis soundtracks – back to back on a single CD! First up is the very cool Visit To A Small Planet from 1960 – a Jerry Lewis sci-fi flick, done with a cool mix of sprightly themes and spacey touches. There's a few nice theremin moments, mixed with these nice orchestral passages that use strings and woodwinds to create some other-worldly elements inflected with more comedic styles overall. Titles include "Desdemona's Lament", "Arrival On Earth", "To Earth", "Crazy Driver", and "Tear Gas/Conclusion". The Delicate Delinquent is a urban-themed film, scored with lots of nice jazzy touches by Buddy Bregman – a composer who knows how to perfectly balance swing and sentiment, goofball energy and some of the more earnest passages that come out in the narrative. Titles include "The Cop", "A Near Miss", "The Fight", "It's A Boy", "The Bout", and "Bridge To Street/Record Shop". CD

Wilbert HarrisonKansas City – Greatest Hits & Rarities ... CD
Fuel 2000, Early 60s. New Copy ... $11.99
A few hits and a lot more rarities from the legendary Wilbert Harrison – the singer best known for his seminal hit "Kansas City", but an artist with a lot more to offer as well! This overstuffed collection brings together 25 tracks from Harrison's years on Bobby Robinson's Fire & Fury Record labels – the place whe he cut that initial hit, but then went onto recorded a great legacy of bluesy soul and R&B stormers featured in this set! The recording quality is often a bit more stripped-down than other New York productions of the period – giving a rough indie feel to the records that really works well with Harrison's bold, soaring vocals. Wild Jimmy Spruill plays some mighty mean guitar on a number of the tracks here too – with that twangy, spacey sound of his – and titles include "1960", "Drafted", "New York World's Fair", "Cold Cold Heart", "Going To The River", "Pretty Little Women", "The Horse", "Listen My Darling", and "Don't Wreck My Life" – plus the hits "Kansas City", "Ain't That A Shame", and "Let's Stick Together".
