A very cool inner sleeve for CDs – perfect for storing them in LP-styled covers! The clear plastic sleeves are similar to the ones you get in Japanese Paper Sleeve packages – and they're great for using if you lose your sleeves from any of those, or if you've bought LP-styled CD packages from other outlets – and want something to protect the CD inside! CD Plastic Sleeves20 Polyclear Japanese Open Top Plastic Sleeves – Multi-Disc CD ... Record Care
Nagaoka (Japan), New Copy ... $4.99
A cool open-top plastic sleeve for storing your CDs! This one works like the LP and 45 sleeves we stock – in that the plastic hugs your CD package on the front and back, and on the sides and bottom – but the top is open, so you can slide out the jewel case for easy access when listening! There's no flap at all to get in the way – and the sleeves are great if you store your CDs on shelves vertically, and don't like the outside cases to get scratched up. This version fits a range of multi-disc packages – including older-styled jewel cases that handle 2 to 4 CDs, and most of the contemporary larger slipcover styled CD packages too. Record Care

New Thelonious MonkBrilliant Corners (20 bit mastering) ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1956. Used ... $6.99
A brilliant title for this brilliant album from Thelonious Monk – a set that really has him coming back strongly in the second half of the 50s – with a new talent for arrangements that really goes past his previous work! Monk's piano and compositions are every bit as great as before – but what really makes the album amazing is his ear for horn lines – particularly the alto of Ernie Henry and tenor of Sonny Rollins, both of whom add in an additional angular quality to Monk's groove. Clark Terry replaces Henry on a few numbers – and the rhythm is from the wonderful team of Oscar Pettiford and Max Roach – on classic long takes of "Brilliant Corners", "Ba-Lue Bolivar Blues Are", "Pannonica", and "Bemsha Swing". New Thelonious MonkThelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington (20 bit master) ... CD
Riverside, 1955. Used ... $6.99
Thelonious Monk plays the music of Duke Ellington – but as you can imagine, the sound here is quite different than usual! At a time when Ellington was working mostly in large group format for the mainstream, Monk's presentation of his standards in trio format is a wonderful way to unlock their nascent modernism – the angular tones, lines, and complex ideas that were still present in the orchestra readings of the tunes, but which would show up even more strongly in Duke's smaller group dates of the 60s. Many numbers bear the familiar Monk imprint – complicated lines on the keys and sharp changes that really reignite the numbers – and rhythm here is from Oscar Pettiford on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. Titles include "Mood Indigo", "It Don't Mean A Thing", "I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good", and "Caravan". CD

New Art PepperArt Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Contemporary, 1957. Used ... $9.99
One of Art Pepper's classic recordings, in which he plays with a spare quartet backing by Miles Davis' rhythm section at the time – Paul Chambers, Red Garland, and Philly Joe Jones. An essential "east meets west" jazz recording, with Art at the top of his game, playing in a unique setting for the first and only time (it's said that Art didn't even know of the date until the morning of the session). Pepper is one of the few alto players to really establish his own voice on the horn, without aping Bird, and his emotive playing really shines here. A definitive version of "Straight Life" is on this album, along with "Waltz Me Blues", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To". and "Star Eyes". CD

Prestige, 1956. Used ... $3.99
A groundbreaking album from Sonny Rollins, largely for the extended track "Tenor Madness", which runs on for 13 minutes, and features him and Coltrane blowing head to head – redefining the sound of the tenor sax in jazz through the course of that amazing track! Backing is by the Red Garland/Paul Chambers/Philly Joe Jones group that backed up 'Trane on many of his Prestige sides, and they work equally well with Rollins – especially on the ballads "When your Lover Has Gone" and "My Reverie", plus the lyrical "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World". Plenty of giants here, although not of the 70s disco scene you might expect from the title – and instead some great 80s groovers who really helped transform the sound of the dancefloor in the years after disco! Titles include "One Mind Two Hearts" by Paradise, "Mr Business" by Tom Browne, "A Man Like You" by Lemelle, "You've Gotta Believe" by Lovebug Starski, "Real Love" by Ritchie Family, "Give Me What I Want" by Bon Rock, "Be With You Tonight" by Total Contrast, "Say Something Love" by Kashif, and "I Want Your Love Back" by Celena Duncan. Quite possibly THE greatest Sonny Rollins album of the early years – or at least the one that has received the most accolades over the years! The record is a brilliant batch of quartet tracks that reinvents bop through Sonny's complicated, yet seemingly automatic solos – an excellent showcase for his razor-sharp talents for improvisation and invention, played with effortless ease, yet still one of the great bar-setting performances of 50s jazz. The group features Tommy Flanagan, Max Roach, and Doug Watkins – and tunes include an original reading of the perennial Rollins' standard "St. Thomas", plus a great version of "Moritat (Mack The Knife)", and the cuts "Strode Rode" and "Blue 7". They're not kidding with the title of this one – because although the record was only Wes Montgomery's second album as a leader, he was already making plenty of waves with the sound of his guitar! A crackling bit of hardbop from Sonny Rollins – and a session that has Sonny playing with the Max Roach/Clifford Brown group that included Bud Powell's brother Richie on piano! Sonny had already made a strong name for himself on albums issued under the Roach/Brown tag at the time, and here the group returns the favor by allowing Sonny to lead, and by giving him a good deal of time in the spotlight! Rollins' solo ability is risen to a razor-sharp level for the set – really getting fire, and managing to invent at a speed and sharpness that's simply amazing. NEPA is a great little album from Tony Allen – recorded in the mid 80s, but with a chunky groove that's very much in the style of his 70s Afro Funk work! The title track is one of Allen's best cuts ever – a really anthemic tune with a punchy hook that's as infectious as it is political – and other tracks on the set are equally nice, touched with some slight electronic bits, giving them a cool Celluloid Electric Africa vibe! 15 tracks from one of the best jazz funk bands of the past 25 years! The Brand New Heavies have a wonderful sound that mixes 70s jazz funk with a tight modern soul groove – never sleepy, and infused with all the best energy of older groups. They first sprung into being in the early days of the London acid jazz scene of the late 80s – but over the next few years, they became one of the best soul acts in the world, breaking out of the underground, and storming the US charts with classics like "Dream On Dreamer", "Stay This Way", and "Never Stop". All those cuts are on this tasty "best of" set – as are numbers from their hip hop experiments, including "Soul Flower" with The Pharcyde, "Bonafide Funk" with Main Source, and remixes of "Sometimes" with Q-Tip and "Saturday Nite" with Mos Def. Chocolate City, 1977. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Sublime second generation soul from Brenda & The Tabulations – a sweet set of Philly grooves, recorded at Sigma sound with help from Norman Harris, Bobby Eli, and John Davis! The album's every bit as groove-heavy as you'd expect from work by those dancefloor heavyweights – and the record's a great change from the earlier style of Brenda and the group – more positive and progressive, yet still with a few of the fragile ballads that first got them noticed! There's a great sense of class and poise to the record – a progression from the early years that's similar to that which many other Philly artists experienced with Gamble & Huff – almost more surprising here, given that sometimes a Casablanca record didn't come out with the same sort of care. Titles include "Superstar", "Home To Myself", "I Keep Coming Back For More", "Let's Go All The Way Down", "Leave Me Alone", and "Everybody's Fool". LP, Vinyl record album

The Black Jazz recordings of Doug Carn are always a revelation – some of the most powerful, progressive work on the American underground of the early 70s – music that got Carn into way more record collections than you might expect! The sound here is a perfect summation of Doug's early genius – his own work on organ and keyboards, never overdone and mixed perfectly with a righteous array of acoustic sounds from Rene McLean on alto and tenor and Olu Dara on trumpet – both players who soar to the skies on waves of energy begun by Carn! Wife Jean Carn sings on a number of tracks – with this heavenly style that's mighty righteous – every bit as soulful as her later work at Philly International, but in a very different way. The set includes Doug's great reading of "Naima" – plus other wonderful cuts that include "Power & Glory", "Feel Free", "Jihad", "Fatherhood", and "God is One". LP, Vinyl record album

Clarence CarterSlip Away – The Ultimate Clarence Carter 1966 to 1971 (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $26.99
Sublime sounds from Clarence Carter – wonderful work from his singles for Fame Records – a wealth of great music from a time when Carter was really coming into his own! Clarence was great right from the start, but here you can really hear him finding his own voice – that all-knowing, storytelling approach that could make even a simple lyric spin out in a way that was totally captivating – with a quality that set Carter apart from some of his more tear-jerked southern soul contemporaries, into a space of class and confidence that would serve him well for years to come! Every number here was recorded at the Fame Studios, with the kind of killer backings you'd expect from the Muscle Shoals team – and the 2LP set features 24 titles that include "Slip Away", "Looking For A Fox", "The Feeling Is Right", "Snatching It Back", "Patches", "I Found What I Wanted", "Look What I Got", "Too Weak To Fight", "I'm Qualified", "Tell Daddy", "Think About It", and lots more! New Gene ChandlerGet Down ... LP
Chi Sound/20th Century, 1978. Very Good ... $0.99
The legendary Gene Chandler gets down, and gets down good – in this classic late 70s set of clubby numbers and upbeat groovers! The set's one of the best moments on the Chi-Soul series from producer Carl Davis – and features a nicely evolved version of earlier Chicago soul modes from Tom Tom 84 and Sonny Sanders – both of whom push an older Brunswick style into some smoother, more sophisticated modern soul territory! Chandler's vocals are wonderful, as always – and have a catchy snapping feel on the groovers, mixed with surprisingly deep soul on the few mellower moments. Titles include a remake of "Please Sunrise", plus "I'm The Travelin Kind", "Get Down", "Tomorrow I May Not Feel The Same", "Greatest Love Ever Known", and "What Now". LP, Vinyl record album

Wayne Cochran & The CC RidersWayne Cochran! ... LP
Chess, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $16.99
Wild stuff! White singer Wayne Cochran looks like he should be a rockabilly star – right down to his big ol' pompadour haircut – but this early album of his for Chess is actually a tight batch of groovers that holds a nice appeal to fans of late 60s funk! Cochran's got a raw Wilson Pickett-ish sound to his voice, and the CC Riders vamp behind him in a nice tight way that's similar to a lot of the mixed race groups backing up other southern soul stars from the time. Includes the breakbeat version of "Little Bitty Pretty One", plus "Big City Woman", "Get Down With It", "Boom Boom", and "Get Ready". Nice gatefold, too – filled with wild pictures of Wayne, and a recommendation from Jackie Gleason! LP, Vinyl record album

Fuel 2000, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Funky Dennis Coffey – classics from his years at Sussex and programmed with one funky instrumental jam after another – 20 tracks from one of the maddest, hardest grooving, most genre-bending figures from the 70s Detroit scene! There's a rawly rumbling underbelly to the material, funky drums and basslines that have been sample classics over the years, but the searing guitars and keyboards are just as cool. Some tracks have flutes and strings for a heavy soundtracky vibe, others keep it raw, and all of it is great. 20 tracks in all: "Ride Sally Ride", "Can You Feel It", "Chicano", "Taurus", "Scorpio", "Son Of Scorpio", "Capricorn's Thing", "Big City Funk", "Summer Time Girl", "Getting It On", "Wind Song", "Good Time Rhythm & Blues", "Theme From Enter The Dragon", "Love Song For Libra", "Garden Of The Moon" and more. James CottonChicago Harp Showdown ... CD
Fuel 2000, Late 60s. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
Searing early solo sides from James Cotton – material recorded in the late 60s, at a time when Cotton was really finding his groove! James serves up plenty of the sharp harmonica lines promised in the title, over backings that show plenty of influence from 60s soul as well – that new punch that bluesmen of his generation were using to push out their sounds in a fresher hybrid of initial Chicago electric modes! The notes on the set are a bit spare on details for the sessions, and the work's got a nicely rough-edged quality that almost feels live at times – or at least "live in studio". Titles include "Dealing With The Devil", "Polly Put The Kettle On", "V8 Ford Blues", "Jelly Jelly", "Feelin Good", "I Need You So Bad", "It Ain't Right", "Off The Wall", "There Is Something On Your Mind", and "The Creeper". DamnedBlack Album (200 gram pressing) ... LP
IRS/Drastic Plastic, 1980. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $37.99 39.98
The weird, ambitious double album by The Damned! The Damned is definitely one of the more unpredictable punk bands of the era, and they upped the ante on The Black Album, with some creatively restless material on all 4 sides – which is ambitious in and of itself, given the less-is-more ethic followed by a lot of the seminal punks of the era. It's got some loud-fast "traditional" punk, darker, plus some darker, stranger cuts – including one that fills a side alll by itself in "Curtain Call" – plus a 4th side of live tracks. Includes ""Wait For The Blackout", "Lively Arts", "Silly Kids Games", "Drinking About My Baby", "Twisted Nerve", "Hit Or Miss", "Dr. Jeckyll And Mr. Hyde","13th Floor Vendetta", "Therapy", "New Rose", "I Just Can't Be Happy Today" and more. Moody magic from Miles Davis and Gil Evans – one of the pair's most perfectly poised albums together, and a set with a slight bossa nova undercurrent! Evans' shimmering horn patterns are in fine form here – complicated, but never in cold and too-modern ways – just the right sort of backdrop for Miles' muted solo work – blow with a great sense of space and care throughout! There's almost a soundtrack sort of depth to the record, but the solos still keep the jazz element nicely in focus – and titles include "Summer Night", "Wait Till You See Her", "Aos Pes Da Cruz", "Song #1", "Song #2", "Corcovado", and "Once Upon A Summertime". Bo Diddley20th Anniversary of Rock N Roll (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Made In Germany (Germany), 1976. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
A mad bit of music from the great Bo Diddley – recorded after his early 70s funk records on Chess – but with a similar genre-tripping style! The album's got this full-on fuzzy feel right from the start – put together by producer Ron Terry, who matches Diddley's wilder side with some surprising guest appearances from Alvin Lee and Elvin Bishop on guitar, Billy Joel on keyboards, Carmine Appice on drums, and Joe Cocker on vocals! Despite the presence of these rock heavyweights, the set's all Bo Diddley's own – without any of the more watered-down crossover aspects you might expect. There's a nice sharp edge on all numbers – really preserving the funky undercurrents – and titles include "Ride The Water", "Drag On", "Kill My Body", and "Not Fade Away" – plus the super-extended "Bo Diddley Jam", which runs for over 15 minutes, and brings together a host of older Diddley tunes in a funky megamix! CD also features three bonus tracks – "Mona", "Emily", and "You Can't Judge A Book" – all from a 1984 live set in Germany. CD

The second album from the legendary Nick Drake – one of those records we could never ever live without – and a true piece of genius that's been turning on generations of listeners since Nick first recorded it back at the start of the 70s! The format is folksy, but the execution is something else entirely – filled with jazzy phrasing, hypnotic lyrics, and arrangements that really go far beyond any cliches or contemporary work you might expect. The great Joe Boyd produced – and really helps give a strong focus to Nick's vocals and guitar – and the cool mix of added instrumentation – which includes organ and celeste from John Cale, flute and alto from Ray Warleigh, piano from Chris McGregor, and guitar from Richard Thompson. Drake's work is impossible to describe adequately, but if you've ever heard him, you probably stopped dead in your tracks the minute you first caught his voice. We still do the same – and it's a pleasure to have this one in stock! Titles include "Fly", "At The Chime Of A City Clock", "Hazy Jane", "Poor Boy", and "One Of These Things First". CD

Two different Jimmy Stewart comedy soundtracks from the 60s – both of them nice! First up is Dear Brigitte – an overlooked 1965 score by George Duning – done with a mix of the playful modes you'd expect from the story, and some of those great deeper dramatic touches that Duning used in more serious soundtracks – a really rich mixing of modes with a sound that's much stronger than we expected! Titles include "On To BBs", "The Captain", "Magical Moment", "Puzzled Cap'n", "Hey Dad", "Is It A Trick", and "She Sank". Next is an even groovier record – a rare non RCA Henry Mancini soundtrack from the early 60s – the score to Mr Hobbs Takes A Vacation, done with all the best mix of jazz and groovy elements we love in classic Mancini! Instrumentation mixes a key electric guitar melody with some lighter touches on woodwinds – really getting the most out of the melody with some shifts in timing and tone, juxtaposed with a few numbers that are even more playful! Titles include "Barn Swallow", "Something For Lauri", "Cream Puff", "Up His Nose", "A Month Off", and "Rudders & Sails". Booker ErvinIn Between ... LP
Blue Note, 1968. Near Mint- ... $24.99
One of the last records that Booker Ervin ever recorded, and one of the best! There's a depth of tone and conception here that goes far beyond even Ervin's already-great albums for Prestige – a mix of modernism and soulful expression that really points the way towards jazz expression in the 70s – although sadly, Booker was to leave the planet before getting a chance to stretch out in that era. All 6 tracks on the album are originals – and they sparkle with the imagination found on some of the most top-shelf Blue Notes of the time – work by Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, or Wayne Shorter – played by a group that includes the amazing Richard Williams on trumpet (almost worth the price of the record alone), Bobby Few on piano, Lenny McBrowne on drums, and the little-known Cevera Jefferies on bass. One of the best records in years from the mighty Far Out label – and a set that really takes the imprint back to its roots! The name of the record echoes the first Friends From Rio session that launched Far Out almost two decades ago – and like that classic, this one's a collaborative effort between a range of Brazilian and British talents – served up in a style that bridges the gap between older bossa and more contemporary modes! The music is perfect from the ground up – not a cheesy bossa remix project, but a true blend of all the best elements, served up in a rich new style. The project gets key Incognito-style help from Daniel "Venom" Maunick, and a real Azymuth pedigree from Alex Malheiros – and the whole thing features a great range of different singers, including Hyldon, Robertinho Silva, Aleh Ferreira, Ivan Matheus, Denise Pinaud, Sabrina Malheiros, and Carlos Dafe – each wrapped up in a sweet blend of Fender Rhodes, organ, riffing guitar, and sweet jazzy horns. A really striking score from Jerry Goldsmith – penned with just the right sense of drama and tension for this mid 60s military thriller! Goldsmith's already working here with a full palette of colors – and Lionel Newman conducts the music with an added richness that seems to bring out all of his long experience on big budget epics, yet deliver the end results with the more subtle, compressed modes that make Goldsmith one of the more mature composers of the 60s. Horns shimmer with this great sense of restraint – almost painting colors in sound – and given the setting of the film, there's some slight exotic hints in a few instrumental passages as well. The whole thing's hung together with some great patter, and recorded in a way that shows the warm spirit of all the more famous folks who kept Babs going along during his glory years! Grand SlamLifetimers For The Funk – In The Studio 1985 to 2010 ... CD
TNT Productions (Germany), Late 80s/1990s/2000s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $6.99
A great collection of work from Grand Slam – a German funk combo who were serving up a classic take on American sounds long before the Daptone and Soul Fire generation! These guys are equally influenced by James Brown and George Clinton – especially the latter, given the bass-heavy riffs the group use in their music – and the number of times they get some help from P-Funk alumnus Gary Mudbone Cooper on some of these cuts! The vibe is more late 70s ensemble funk than gritty funky 45 modes – but Grand Slam definitely get their groove right – and have some mighty tight instrumentation to live up to their inspirations. 2CD set brings together a lot of work from the group's first 25 years in music – including some rare tracks, previously unreleased numbers, and a few cuts on CD for the first time ever. Titles include "Goin Out (orig demo)", "Da Rain", "Perfect Day", "Rock My World", "Get Your Own Thing (orig demo)", "Light My Fire", "If I Had", "U Blind", "Hunk/Fop", "Real XTC", and "Manik Botanik". New Al GreenGreen Is Blues ... LP
Hi Records, 1972. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Well, we don't know if we'd say that Al Green is blues – because he's still singing in his wonderfully sweet Memphis soul style – but this album definitely has a sound that gives a nod to the classic bluesy soul that inspired Al's work in the years before he put things together with his undeniable magic! Apart from originals like "Get Back Baby" and "Tomorrow's Dream", Al covers some nice classics like "The Letter", "Summertime", "I Stand Accused", and "Talk To Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Buck HammerDiscovery Of Buck Hammer ... LP
Hanover, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Pretty darn strange one, and an album that unearths the talent of supposed Alabama boogie-woogie pianist Buck Hammer – who is actually Steve Allen, playing under a different name! The liner notes claim that Hammer was a legendary player in the mid 20th century, but due to reasons only he could explain, he almost never left his hometown of Glen Springs, Alabama. The session as even explained as being one of Hammer's few trips from his home town, to Nashville in 1956, where he cut the sides that would become this album. This rare Hanover release comes with a beautiful pen and ink drawing on the cover of Hammer in action – with a David Stone Martin-esque drawing that adds to the fake "authenticity" of the album. (Hey, it had us fooled – until a customer wrote to tell us the real story!) Titles include loads of originals like "Fink's Mules", "Blue's Blues", "Golly Gee Boogie", and "Jungle Boogie". Leigh Harline/Buddy BregmanVisit To A Small Planet/Delicate Delinquent ... CD
20th Century/Kritzerland, 1957/1960. New Copy ... $19.99
Two Jerry Lewis soundtracks – back to back on a single CD! First up is the very cool Visit To A Small Planet from 1960 – a Jerry Lewis sci-fi flick, done with a cool mix of sprightly themes and spacey touches. There's a few nice theremin moments, mixed with these nice orchestral passages that use strings and woodwinds to create some other-worldly elements inflected with more comedic styles overall. Titles include "Desdemona's Lament", "Arrival On Earth", "To Earth", "Crazy Driver", and "Tear Gas/Conclusion". The Delicate Delinquent is a urban-themed film, scored with lots of nice jazzy touches by Buddy Bregman – a composer who knows how to perfectly balance swing and sentiment, goofball energy and some of the more earnest passages that come out in the narrative. Titles include "The Cop", "A Near Miss", "The Fight", "It's A Boy", "The Bout", and "Bridge To Street/Record Shop". CD

Wilbert HarrisonKansas City – Greatest Hits & Rarities ... CD
Fuel 2000, Early 60s. New Copy ... $11.99
A few hits and a lot more rarities from the legendary Wilbert Harrison – the singer best known for his seminal hit "Kansas City", but an artist with a lot more to offer as well! This overstuffed collection brings together 25 tracks from Harrison's years on Bobby Robinson's Fire & Fury Record labels – the place whe he cut that initial hit, but then went onto recorded a great legacy of bluesy soul and R&B stormers featured in this set! The recording quality is often a bit more stripped-down than other New York productions of the period – giving a rough indie feel to the records that really works well with Harrison's bold, soaring vocals. Wild Jimmy Spruill plays some mighty mean guitar on a number of the tracks here too – with that twangy, spacey sound of his – and titles include "1960", "Drafted", "New York World's Fair", "Cold Cold Heart", "Going To The River", "Pretty Little Women", "The Horse", "Listen My Darling", and "Don't Wreck My Life" – plus the hits "Kansas City", "Ain't That A Shame", and "Let's Stick Together". Screamin Jay HawkinsPortrait Of A Man & His Woman ... CD
Hot Line/Fuel 2000, 1973. New Copy ... $4.99 11.98
One of the most obscure albums ever recorded by Screamin Jay Hawkins – and one of the best, as well – a rare session done down in Nashville, and with a rootsy vibe that works perfect for Jay's amazing voice! There's a bit less hoke here than Hawkins can sometimes have – and although the songs still resonate with that striking approach that got Hawkins rediscovered by a whole generation at the end of the 60s, there's also less gimmick, too – and a mode that goes for some deeper southern soul elements at all the best moments. Titles include "Portrait Of A Man", "Don't Deceive Me", "Ashes", "We Love", "I Don't Know", "Please Don't Leave Me", and "Guess Who". CD
