CD Plastic Sleeves20 Polyclear Japanese Open Top Plastic Sleeves – Multi-Disc CD ... Record Care
Nagaoka (Japan), New Copy ... $4.99
A cool open-top plastic sleeve for storing your CDs! This one works like the LP and 45 sleeves we stock – in that the plastic hugs your CD package on the front and back, and on the sides and bottom – but the top is open, so you can slide out the jewel case for easy access when listening! There's no flap at all to get in the way – and the sleeves are great if you store your CDs on shelves vertically, and don't like the outside cases to get scratched up. This version fits a range of multi-disc packages – including older-styled jewel cases that handle 2 to 4 CDs, and most of the contemporary larger slipcover styled CD packages too. Record Care

Eric DolphyOutward Bound (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Prestige/Fantasy, 1960. Used ... $9.99
Eric Dolphy's first album ever as a leader – recorded almost immediately after his arrival on the New York scene! The sound here is already bolder and stronger than the Dolphy experiments on the west coast – sharp-edged and freely exploratory, in a way that pushes the playful lyricism of the Chico Hamilton years aside, and reaches out into the new territory hinted at by the title! The group is a quintet that features Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Jaki Byard on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – and the overall sound is a beautiful mix of modernist hard bop and some of Dolphy's later freer styles. Dolphy plays his usual mix of alto, flute, and bass clarinet – and the tracks include "245", "Miss Toni", "Les", and "GW". CD

Thelonious MonkBrilliant Corners (20 bit mastering) ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1956. Used ... $8.99
A brilliant title for this brilliant album from Thelonious Monk – a set that really has him coming back strongly in the second half of the 50s – with a new talent for arrangements that really goes past his previous work! Monk's piano and compositions are every bit as great as before – but what really makes the album amazing is his ear for horn lines – particularly the alto of Ernie Henry and tenor of Sonny Rollins, both of whom add in an additional angular quality to Monk's groove. Clark Terry replaces Henry on a few numbers – and the rhythm is from the wonderful team of Oscar Pettiford and Max Roach – on classic long takes of "Brilliant Corners", "Ba-Lue Bolivar Blues Are", "Pannonica", and "Bemsha Swing". Universal (Brazil), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 20CDs ... $299.99
Vinicius De Moraes is an artist with the soul of a poet, but a hell of a recording career too – one that spans the earliest years of bossa nova, which he helped to create – and runs through some tremendous collaborations in the 60s and 70s as well! This wonderful set brings together all the important Vinicius De Moraes albums for Philips – including a number that have never been on CD before – recordings that take on a wonderful range of styles and different approaches, each very well suited to the nature of the specific projects, or the lyrical needs of the master! Some of the most important records here are the collaborations – including early Black Orpheus work with Jobim, Afro-Sambas with Baden Powell, and later duets with Toquinho – but there's also important soundtracks, music and poetry projects, and some very rare material too! The collection features two separate CDs of rare material, unusual cuts, and singles – Pela Luz Dols Olhos Teus 1 & 2 – plus the individual albums Orfeu Da Conceicao, Vinicius & Odette Lara, Vinicius Caymmi No Zum Zum, De Vinicius E Baden with Ciro Monteiro, Os Afro Sambas, Vinicius Poesia E Cancao Ao Vivo Vols 1 & 2, Garota De Ipanema soundtrack, Jesus Cristo Superstar, Vinicius Canta Nossa Vilha Gabriela, Vinicius & Toquinho (1974), Vinicius/Toquinho (1975), Deus Lhe Pague, Antologia Poetica, 10 Anos De Toquinho & Vinicius, Ump Pouco De Ilusao, and A Arca De Noe Vols 1 & 2. New Sonny RollinsSaxophone Colossus (20 bit mastering) ... CD
Prestige, 1956. Used ... $2.99
Quite possibly THE greatest Sonny Rollins album of the early years – or at least the one that has received the most accolades over the years! The record is a brilliant batch of quartet tracks that reinvents bop through Sonny's complicated, yet seemingly automatic solos – an excellent showcase for his razor-sharp talents for improvisation and invention, played with effortless ease, yet still one of the great bar-setting performances of 50s jazz. The group features Tommy Flanagan, Max Roach, and Doug Watkins – and tunes include an original reading of the perennial Rollins' standard "St. Thomas", plus a great version of "Moritat (Mack The Knife)", and the cuts "Strode Rode" and "Blue 7". Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), 1980s. Used 2CD ... $9.99
A snapping collection of soul from the 80s – 2CDs worth of music, and a host of wonderful groovers from the post-disco years! The styles here are heavy on beats and keyboards – lots more electric rhythms than the previous decade's soul – but the sound is still plenty darn great, thanks to impeccable songwriting, infectious hooks, and top-shelf vocal performances all the way through! There's plenty here for an 80s grooving dancefloor – and titles include "Let It All Blow" by Dazz Band, "I Am Somebody" by Glenn Jones, "Stone Love" by Kashif, "Just For The Night" by Evelyn Champagne King, "What Do I Do (M&M mix)" by Phil Fearon & Galaxy, "Pickin Up Pieces" by Brenda K Starr, "Act Like You Know" by Fat Larry's Band, "Outstanding" by Gap Band, "Encore (live)" by Cheryl Lynn, "This Beat Is Mine" by Vicki D, "Jam On It" by Newcleus, "I Love You More" by Rene & Angela, "No Way" by Bobbi Humphrey, "In Your Car" by The Cool Notes, "Right On Track" by Breakfast Club, and "You Can't Have My Love" by The Jones Girls. Titles include "Happy" by Surface, "Lettin It Loose" by Heatwave, "Just Got Paid" by Johnny Kemp, "Suferfine" by Skool Boyz, "Dressing Up" by Street Angels, "The Heaven I Need" by Three Degrees, "Never Gonna Let You Go" by Chandra Simmons, "Lovin You" by Status IV, "Doin It In A Haunted House" by Yvonne Gage, and "Dancing Tight" by Galaxy. Titles include "Middle Of The Night" by Body, "Passion From A Woman" by Krystol, "In The Dark" by Roy Ayers, "Rock Steady" by The Whispers, "Ain't Nothin Goin On But The Rent" by Gwen Guthrie, "Don't Let Go Of Me" by Mike & Brenda Sutton, "If You Can Do It I Can Too" by Meli'Sa Morgan, "Strip This Heart" by John Adams, "Back To Love" by Evelyn King, and "Falling In Love" by Sybil. Titles include "One Mind Two Hearts" by Paradise, "Mr Business" by Tom Browne, "A Man Like You" by Lemelle, "You've Gotta Believe" by Lovebug Starski, "Real Love" by Ritchie Family, "Give Me What I Want" by Bon Rock, "Be With You Tonight" by Total Contrast, "Say Something Love" by Kashif, and "I Want Your Love Back" by Celena Duncan. Sweet 70s grooves, and a few key contemporary cuts too – a really wonderful set that's full of overlooked modern soul gems and a great mix of mellow groovers! The set list is superb, and features even a few surprises to our ears long-trained on modern soul – and tracks include "There I Go" by The Notations, "I Hate Hate" by Razzy, "Pour Your Little Heart Out" by The Drifters, "Daylight" by Bobby Womack, "Got To Find Ms Right" by Buddy Miles, "Tripping Out (Featurecast 2013 re-edit)" by Curtis Mayfield, "What Do You See In Her" by Inell Young, "You Made A Believer Out Of Me" by Betty Lavette, "This Side Of Heaven" by Gavin Christopher, "Spoiled Like A Baby" by Mystique, "If You Really Need A Friend" by Bobby Foster, "Smoothie Pie" by Sky Hi, and "I Don't Know" by Glen Anthony Henry. New Sonny RollinsWorktime! (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Prestige, 1955. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
If worktime was like this for us, you'd catch us showing up on the job early every day – but sadly, nothing at our office can match the brilliance of early Sonny Rollins here – a sharp-edged genius that perfectly illustrates why he was one of the greatest players on his horn for many decades running! There's a depth of tone on the record that rivals Coleman Hawkins or Lester Young – but a quickness of pace and imagination that shows a clear influence from Charlie Parker, and a deftness that few were bringing to the tenor at the time. The rhythm section here is super tight – and features Ray Bryant on piano, George Morrow on bass, and Max Roach on drums – all supporting Rollins' bold lead with lines that bristle with electricity, but still often fall back to let the sound of the tenor envelop the whole group. Tracks are longish, and titles include "Raincheck", "There Are Such Things", "Paradox", and "It's All Right With Me". CD

Universal, 1971. New Copy 4 LPs ... $72.99 79.98
Soulful southern rock at its absolute finest – and the Allman Brothers at their peak! The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings box set puts together performances from a legendary series of concerts the band played that year – originally serving as the source material for the classic At Fillmore East live album, but as geniunely great as that album is, it only hints at the expansive improvisational genius that happened live on stage. This set does a terrific job of putting that on display – and it's brilliant stuff! The 4LP version is jam-packed with both consise tunes and freewheeling jams – all recorded by Tom Dowd – on March 12 and March 13 (2 sets each night), plus a closing show on June 27. It's also heavy duty and top quality – with hours of essential recordings from those 5 sets – on 4 X 200 gram LPs packaged in a heavy outer box! Includes "Statesboro Blues", "Trouble No More", "Don't Keep Me Wondering", In Memory Of Elisabeth Reed", "Midnight Rider", "One Way Out", "Stormy Monday", "Hot 'Lanta", "You Don't Love Me", "Whipping Post", "Mountain Jam" and "Drunk Hearted Boy" – many running WELL north of the of the 10 minutes mark – as Allmans will be Allmans. An amazing little CD – one that features 2 of the best post-Smile Beach Boys albums in one package, plus some excellent bonus cuts too! Friends is a completely incredible record – one that's built around small, short, sweet songs that are almost an adult take on themes of relationships first explored in Pet Sounds – produced with a homier and more personal approach that's really great. Classics on the album include "Busy Doin Nothin", "Transcendental Meditation", "Little Bird", "Anna Lee The Healer", "Be Here In The Morning", "Friends", and "Wake The World". 20/20 is a slightly lesser album, but still pretty nice too – and is noteworthy as the repository of some bits that were destined to originally appear on Smile, and never made the Smiley Smile cut – as well as the genesis of some of the ideas that would come out more fully on the excellent Sunflower and Surf's Up albums. And in fact, if the Beach Boys had never cut another album, 20/20 would be a masterpiece – and it's only through comparison with their real classics that it only weakens a bit. Tracks include the sublime "Cabinessence", plus "Do It Again", "I Can Hear Music", "Be With Me", "All I Want To Do", "I Want To Sleep", and "The Nearest Faraway Place". And if that's not enough, the CD features excellent bonus cuts like "Break Away", "Celebrate The News", "We're Together Again", and a cover of "Walk On By"! CD

An insanely big batch of Beach Boys rarities – a set that features 60 previously unreleased tracks, in a bundle that includes 174 titles in all – packaged in an ultra-cool puffy-covered book! The book's style is meant to replicate a high school yearbook from the old days – a format that's quite fitting for the package, given that the collection documents the group's 50 years in music – with photos, archive material, yearbook-like inscriptions from the group members, and even a copy of Brian Wilson's handwritten high school essay "My Philosophy"! Most other tracks are unusual versions, different mixes, session tracks, alternates, and even lots of live material too – and the set's a true treasure for diehard fans like us – who often love the group most the farthest we get away from the hits. Unreleased tracks include "This Whole World (acapella)", "I Can Hear Music (live Maryland 1975)", "Why Don't They Let Us Fall In Love", "You're Still A Mystery", "Goin To The Beach", "Sail Plane Song (2012 stereo mix)", "Amusement Parks USA (early version)", "I Get Around (mono with session intro)", "Surfers Rule (with session intro)", "It's Over Now (alt)", "Brian's Back (alt)", "Hushabye (BBC 1964", "California Feelin (demo)", "California Girls (lei'd in Hawaii version)", "Surf's Up (1967 version)", "Guess I'm Dumb (instrumental w/background vocals)", "It's About Time (live Chicago 1973)", "Runaway (live Chicago 1965 with concert promo intro)", "The Letter (Hawaii 1967 rehearsal)", "Wild Honey (live New Jersey 1972), "Home Recordings/Surfin Rehearsal Highlights", and plenty plenty more. Buster Benton works here with a style that's definitely got the Chicago electric vibe of the 70s – but which also echoes earlier, rootsier modes as well – often delivered with a style that's a lot earthier than most of the other blues work coming out at the time on bigger labels – exactly the kind of sound that kept Benton a club favorite back in the day. Titles include "Sweet 94", "Spider In My Stew", "Sorry", "Lonesome For A Dime", "Do It In The Rain", "Lean On Me", "Love Like I Wanna", "Born With The Blues", "Dangerous Woman", and "Money Is The Name Of The Game". The second volume in Billy Bragg & Wilco's Mermaid Avenue series – dedicated to bringing to life unfinished Woody Guthrie tunes – thanks to Woody's daughter Nora inviting them to work with Guthrie's lyrics, penned throughout his life, but never finished as recorded songs. Bragg's take is straight-forward, strong-voiced folk, and Wilco takes creative twists and turns with their versions, making for a compellingly diverse bunch of songs. Leo (UK), 2007. New Copy 2CD ... $24.99
Some of the most dynamic music we've heard from Anthony Braxton in years – a set of duets recorded with European bassist Joelle Leandre! We've always loved Leandre's basswork – as she often bows the instrument, creating these beautifully deep tones that ground any sort of improvisational session like this beautifully – kind of flowing out with an earthy energy that really seems to set Braxton on fire here. Anthony plays sopranino, soprano, alto sax, and contra-bass clarinet – and the set features three long improvisations recorded by the pair! CD

Brides Of FunkensteinNever Buy Texas From A Cowboy ... LP
Atlantic, 1979. Very Good ... $11.99
A tremendously soulful session from the late 70s P-Funk empire – sung by a group who were George Clinton's answer to Three Degrees, First Choice, and other female club trios of the time! The sound here is hardly as disco as those other groups, though – and there's plenty of funky Clinton touches in the mix – including rumbling basslines, raspy guitars, and a tightly focused groove that has the singers Dawn Silva, Sheila Horn, and Jeanette McGruder working equally with the larger group of musicians on the record. Production is by Bootsy Collins and Clinton, with horn arrangements by Fred Wesley – which makes for some great Horny Horns funk touches on most tracks! The title cut – "Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy" – runs on as a long P-Funk groove for about 15 minutes, but other tracks are shorter, and titles include "I'm Holding You Responsible", "Smoke Signals", "Party Up In Here", and "Didn't Mean To Fall In Love". Chicago blues, with a dose of soul – and a smoking set of early Jewel label recordings by George "Wild Child" Butler – most of which were produced by the legendary Willie Dixon! The tunes here have that gritty groove you might know from Chicago electric work on Chess – particularly by Jimmy Reed – a chugging, funky style that's mighty nice – and which works wonderful to help draw out the best inflections from Butler's bold vocals. Black Jazz, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
The Black Jazz recordings of Doug Carn are always a revelation – some of the most powerful, progressive work on the American underground of the early 70s – music that got Carn into way more record collections than you might expect! The sound here is a perfect summation of Doug's early genius – his own work on organ and keyboards, never overdone and mixed perfectly with a righteous array of acoustic sounds from Rene McLean on alto and tenor and Olu Dara on trumpet – both players who soar to the skies on waves of energy begun by Carn! Wife Jean Carn sings on a number of tracks – with this heavenly style that's mighty righteous – every bit as soulful as her later work at Philly International, but in a very different way. The set includes Doug's great reading of "Naima" – plus other wonderful cuts that include "Power & Glory", "Feel Free", "Jihad", "Fatherhood", and "God is One". LP, Vinyl record album

Benny CarterBenny Carter In Paris ... LP
20th Century, 1964. Very Good ... $6.99
A surprisingly great album – even if it's short on information! There's no real dates on this one, so we have to assume that it's of the vintage of the album's release date – somewhere in the early 60s – making the album pretty late for Benny, but also pretty great as well! The sessions have a pretty unique feel – with Benny's alto in front of gentle small group backings that have a bit of a sweet feel – and some occasional vocal chorus bits that slide in and out very gracefully. Carter's tone is tremendous, and the sound of the record is really incredible – hard to describe, but much more than you'd expect from the title, label, and the date! Titles include "Waltz Gay", "Bagatelle", "Blues For Benny", "Black Knight", and "Cuando Caliente El Sol". LP, Vinyl record album

Benny CarterSwingin' The 20s (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Contemporary (Japan), 1958. Used ... $9.99
Benny Carter swings material from the 20s – but the results are a lot better than you might expect! We'll be honest in saying that the cover and theme of this one always made us figure the record was some sort of "old timey" affair – but Benny's surprisingly cool on the record, and is working in a small group mode that may well be even more deftly compelling than his earlier combo sides for Verve! The group here is only a quartet – with Benny on alto and trumpet, Earl Hines on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums – and it's possibly the modern rhythm section that gives the record a nicely soulful groove, and lets the tunes come off as more than just rehashed classics. Carter's tone on the alto is great – and very nicely recorded, with that edge that was showing up strongly in these later years – and titles include "Laugh Clown Laugh", "Thou Swell", "Who's Sorry Now", "A Monday Date", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "In A Little Spanish Town", and "Mary Lou". Sublime sounds from Clarence Carter – wonderful work from his singles for Fame Records – a wealth of great music from a time when Carter was really coming into his own! Every number here was recorded at the Fame Studios, with the kind of killer backings you'd expect from the Muscle Shoals team – and the 2LP set features 24 titles that include "Slip Away", "Looking For A Fox", "The Feeling Is Right", "Snatching It Back", "Patches", "I Found What I Wanted", "Look What I Got", "Too Weak To Fight", "I'm Qualified", "Tell Daddy", "Think About It", and lots more! A previously unheard Johnny Cash side from the early 80s – and a pretty strong one – with the original unreleased Billy Sherrill production on one side, and a new Elvis Costello produced version on the flip. The song is "She Used To Love Me A Lot", a great tune recorded by number of country heavies over the years, but it sounds tailor-made for Johnny's deep, soulful voice. It’s produced by Billy Sherrill, who is renowned for the string-laden countrypolitan sound, but he doesn't really go there with this song – instead flavoring it with mandolin, ome great, reverb-y electric guitar and some nice female backing vocals. Costello's mix is a bit more stripped down. Good stuff! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Quite possibly the crowning masterpiece by The Clash – and a record that certainly pushed them out of the punk rock ghetto and into the collections of countless mainstream folks over the years! This is the set that really pushed the group over the top – the one that harnessed all the best energy of the previous two records and gave it a strong new focus – one that draws on roots as deep as the late 50s Elvis reference of the cover art, but which also bubbled over with newly approaching 80s musical ideas and politics! Yet the message never gets in the way of the guitar-heavy tuneful appeal of the songs – ringing out for decades on classics like "Train In Vain", "London Calling", "Spanish Bombs", "Lost In The Supermarket", "Guns Of Brixton", "Clampdown", and "Rudy Can't Fail". Searing early solo sides from James Cotton – material recorded in the late 60s, at a time when Cotton was really finding his groove! James serves up plenty of the sharp harmonica lines promised in the title, over backings that show plenty of influence from 60s soul as well – that new punch that bluesmen of his generation were using to push out their sounds in a fresher hybrid of initial Chicago electric modes! A mad bit of music from the great Bo Diddley – recorded after his early 70s funk records on Chess – but with a similar genre-tripping style! The second album from the legendary Nick Drake – one of those records we could never ever live without – and a true piece of genius that's been turning on generations of listeners since Nick first recorded it back at the start of the 70s! The format is folksy, but the execution is something else entirely – filled with jazzy phrasing, hypnotic lyrics, and arrangements that really go far beyond any cliches or contemporary work you might expect. The great Joe Boyd produced – and really helps give a strong focus to Nick's vocals and guitar – and the cool mix of added instrumentation – which includes organ and celeste from John Cale, flute and alto from Ray Warleigh, piano from Chris McGregor, and guitar from Richard Thompson. Two different Jimmy Stewart comedy soundtracks from the 60s – both of them nice! First up is Dear Brigitte – an overlooked 1965 score by George Duning – done with a mix of the playful modes you'd expect from the story, and some of those great deeper dramatic touches that Duning used in more serious soundtracks – a really rich mixing of modes with a sound that's much stronger than we expected! Next is an even groovier record – a rare non RCA Henry Mancini soundtrack from the early 60s – the score to Mr Hobbs Takes A Vacation, done with all the best mix of jazz and groovy elements we love in classic Mancini! Instrumentation mixes a key electric guitar melody with some lighter touches on woodwinds – really getting the most out of the melody with some shifts in timing and tone, juxtaposed with a few numbers that are even more playful! Stone Latin Soul – from one of the greatest groups of the genre! In the late 60s, New York was on top of the Latin Soul sound – blending together bits from Puerto Rican and African-American roots to come up with a whole new sound. But by the time of the early 70s, LA had taken over the groove – and nobody did it better than El Chicano! The combo had a really wonderful sound that was Chicano soul at its best – lots of jazzy stepping rhythms topped off with fuzzy guitars, sweet keyboard bits, and some warm and wonderful west coast soul-styled vocals. There were plenty of Latin influences in the rhythms, but the sound itself was pure LA – done with a really righteous groove throughout! This set brings together a dozen of the group's best tracks for the Kapp and MCA labels from the early 70s – and tracks include "Cubano Chant", "Viva Tirado", "El Cayuco", "The Latin One", "Tell Her She's Lovely", "Sabor A Mi", "Ahora Si", "Cantaloupe Island", and "Juntos". EqualsBaby, Come Back ... LP
RCA, 1968. Sealed ... $48.99
The Equals were a mixed race rock group out of the UK during the late 60s, and although they're probably best remembered for their hit "Baby, Come Back", this full album also has them playing a number of cuts that have a deep, soulful, bass-heavy groove that goes way beyond their big single. Highlights include the tracks "The Guy Who Made Her A Star" and "Leaving You Is Hard To Do" – both of which start with nice bassy sample bits! LP, Vinyl record album

Booker ErvinIn Between ... LP
Blue Note, 1968. Very Good+ ... $29.99
One of the last records that Booker Ervin ever recorded, and one of the best! There's a depth of tone and conception here that goes far beyond even Ervin's already-great albums for Prestige – a mix of modernism and soulful expression that really points the way towards jazz expression in the 70s – although sadly, Booker was to leave the planet before getting a chance to stretch out in that era. All 6 tracks on the album are originals – and they sparkle with the imagination found on some of the most top-shelf Blue Notes of the time – work by Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, or Wayne Shorter – played by a group that includes the amazing Richard Williams on trumpet (almost worth the price of the record alone), Bobby Few on piano, Lenny McBrowne on drums, and the little-known Cevera Jefferies on bass. Loads of dark edges, searing solos, and plenty of free flights into the sky – on titles that include "The In Between", "Tyra", "The Muse", "Mour", "Sweet Pea", and "Largo". LP, Vinyl record album
(Liberty pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Everly BrothersRoots (180 gram pressing) (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Warner, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Sublime country rock and superb vocals from the Everly Brothers – an album as close to our hearts as the much more hipster-celebrated work of the era by Gram Parsons, the Byrds and others! The Everlys grasped onto their significance throughout the 60s by hopping from trend to trend with little success – but they finally nailed it in 1968 with this effort. (Artistically, if not commercially.) The boys apply their staggering harmonies to country and country-ish material, adding their own unique spin to the tunes – and earnestly work in some montages of their family radio shows from the early 50s! It's easily their most endearing work of the 60s. Produced by Lenny Waronker with strings by Nick DeCaro. Includes wonderful versions of Jimmie Rodgers' "T For Texas", "Shady Grove", Randy Newman's "Illinois", Ray Price's "You Done Me Wrong", Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried" and "Sing Me Back Home", plus "Ventura Boulvard" and "Turn Around" written by Ron Elliot of Beau Brummels. Fatback BandLive In Tokyo 2006 ... CD
Fatback (UK), 2006. Used ... $13.99
Fatback live in the 21st Century – but still sounding pretty darn great! The album's a surprisingly wonderful little record – live funk played by a combo who still definitely have their chops down – presented here with just the right sound to make all the music come out right! There's none of the too-stiff styles or too-modern instrumentation you might expect – and over the years, it sounds like Fatback's picked up some jazzier overtones in their music – great styles that help push the core funk into some warmer territory, but without losing any sense of soul at all. The album's got some especially great keyboards amidst the choppy guitar, basslines, and drums – and titles include "Funk Backin", "Nija Walk", "Let The Drums Speak", "Bus Stop", "Keep On Steppin", "I Like Girls", "Yum Yum", "Spanish Hustle",a nd "Wicki Wacky". First ChoiceDelusions ... LP
Philly Groove/Gold Mind, 1977. Very Good+ ... $7.99
One of the best records ever cut by this soulful Philly female trio! The album's one of the first on Salsoul's Gold Mind subsidiary – and it features sparkling club production by the Harris/Baker/Young team – a landmark force not only in Philly disco, but 70s female soul as well – as their backings for groups of this nature are always sensitive to the complexities of the vocals! The record's mostly uptempo – with plenty of soaring tracks that still retain the more soulful sound of the group's early work – and the songwriting's generally tight, a few notches above earlier albums on Warner – showing that their return to the indie fold was a very good move. Titles include the classic "Let No Man Put Asunder" – plus "Doctor Love", "Indian Giver", "Do Me Again", and a great version of Stevie Wonder's "Love Having You Around". LP, Vinyl record album

New Friends From RioFriends From Rio 2014 ... LP
Far Out (UK), 2014. New Copy ... $18.99
One of the best records in years from the mighty Far Out label – and a set that really takes the imprint back to its roots! The name of the record echoes the first Friends From Rio session that launched Far Out almost two decades ago – and like that classic, this one's a collaborative effort between a range of Brazilian and British talents – served up in a style that bridges the gap between older bossa and more contemporary modes! The music is perfect from the ground up – not a cheesy bossa remix project, but a true blend of all the best elements, served up in a rich new style. The project gets key Incognito-style help from Daniel "Venom" Maunick, and a real Azymuth pedigree from Alex Malheiros – and the whole thing features a great range of different singers, including Hyldon, Robertinho Silva, Aleh Ferreira, Ivan Matheus, Denise Pinaud, Sabrina Malheiros, and Carlos Dafe – each wrapped up in a sweet blend of Fender Rhodes, organ, riffing guitar, and sweet jazzy horns. Titles include "So Resta A Porta Se Abrir", "Mas Que Nada", "Garota", "Casino Bangu", "Batucada Bidu", and "Mulher Malagueta". LP, Vinyl record album

Funk BrothersBest Of The Funk Brothers – 20th Century Masters ... CD
Motown/Universal, 1960s. Used ... $6.99
Motown legends finally get their due – in this first-ever collection of work by The Funk Brothers! The group were the backing band for most of the classic Motown recordings of the 60s – and labored for years with hardly any credit, until recently, when their achievements have been brought to light by the film Standing In The Shadows Of Motown, and a much-deserved Grammy award! And despite its cheap packaging, the collection's got plenty to offer any solid fan of Motown – 12 tracks that are pulled from sources that include tracks issued under the name of organist Earl Van Dyke, British singles, and even a previously unreleased mix! The tunes include a few originals, plus instrumental takes on Motown classics – with titles that include "Soul Stomp", "6 By 6", "Too Many Fish In The Sea", "All For You", "Come See About Me", "How Sweet It Is", "The Way You Do The Things You Do", "What's Going On", "Papa Was A Rolling Stone", and "Runaway Child Running Wild". Dizzy GillespiePortrait Of Jenny ... LP
Perception, 1971. Very Good ... $24.99
A sweet slow and groovy funk LP recorded by Dizzy for the Perception label! The record is similar to his other LPs from the time in that it's got a cool electric feel that you don't really associate with Diz. The whole album has a sly sweet funky sound that's part CTI/part Latin-tinged Dizzy – and the real strength is the great Mike Longo, who plays some amazing stretched out piano lines, which work perfectly with the basslines on the record as a foil for Dizzy's sparkling trumpet solos. The album's got 4 long cuts – including the excellent "Me N Them", plus "Olinga" and "Diddy Wa Diddy". LP, Vinyl record album

Jef GilsonJef Gilson Et Malagasy (4CD set) (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... CD
Jazzman (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $24.99
An amazing blend of jazz and global elements – and some of the most exciting material ever from French jazzman Jef Gilson! Gilson was a modernist right from the start – an artist whose piano work of the 60s was on a par with Martial Solal, and who was already beginning to branch out by the end of the decade into a range of unusual projects! The material here has Jef really coming into his own – exploring the sounds and styles of Madagascar with his Malagasy group – one of the most important cross-cultural acts on the European scene of the 70s – with a power and presence that's only being fully appreciated today. This beautiful set brings together four rare albums by Gilson and the group – originally issued on his own Palm Records label, and lovingly repackaged by Jazzman with full notes on the music in both French and English. The style is quite unique – sometimes electrified a bit on tracks that feature guitar and Gilson on Fender Rhodes – sometimes more acoustic and organic when the percussion takes over a bit – and always with these wonderful reed passages that reach out with lots of spiritual energy, and tones that rival the best of the post-Coltrane generation in the US. Different albums include Malagasy/Gilson, Madagascar Now, Malagasy At Newport-Paris, and Les Touches Noires – the last of which features a number of unissued or rare tracks by the group. Really wonderful stuff – and work we'd put up there with the best MPS Jazz Meets World recordings, or 70s treasures by Mulatu, or some of Lloyd Miller's best! CD

Blue Note, 2013. New Copy (pic cover)... $6.99 9.98
Great music, a great package, and a cool little record that really makes it worth owning a vinyl version of this great little track! Jill Scott's vocals are wonderful on the main version of "Calls" – remixed here by Mr Porter with added Pharoah Monche rhymes. The remix has these cool spacey touches – almost like someone's cutting the keyboards live – and these shine even more on the instrumental. The flipside has "Porter Chops Glasper" – a totally great 12 minute mix by Porter of grooves from Robert Glasper – keyboards, beats, and lots of sweet little touches all swirled together. And hey, the whole thing's on red vinyl too! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Death Waltz (UK), 2013. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Legendary Italian prog combo Goblin – reunited in the studio on the cusp of their 2013 tour – and sounding as vital as ever! This great EP is a slight departure for the Death Waltz label – in that it's a contemporary set, rather than a straight up soundtrack – but the group themselves are revisiting their soundtrack classics. It includes new versions of 3 classics from their Dario Argento canon – "Profondo Rosso", "Suspiria" and "Tenebre" – plus "Roller" – the title track from what's probably their greatest non-soundtrack album. A cool 45 from one of the greatest Italian horror soundtracks ever – and the album that firmly put Goblin on the map! Side one features the amazing "Profondo Rosso" theme – a slow-building monster with lots of brooding bass and these very spooky keyboards! Side two features "Death Dies" – a number that's a bit more upbeat, but still pretty tense – almost like a great "chase" theme from an American cop/crime soundtrack! 7-inch, Vinyl record

New Jerry GoldsmithOur Man Flint ... LP
20th Century, Mid 60s. Very Good- ... $14.99
Excellent soundtrack work by Jerry Goldsmith – possibly his greatest ever! Jerry's usually a bit staid with some of his scores – but working here on the soundtrack to this James Coburn spy spoof film, he's truly fantastic! The approach mixes strings and bossa-inflected grooves with some spookier instrumental touches – either on electric guitar, sax, or a "tortured" Thomas organ and a Solovox – and the overall feel of the album is on a par with the best work of the sort by Lalo Schifrin or Hugo Montenegro! Titles include "Doing As The Romans Did", "All I Have To Do Is Take A Bite of Your Apple?", "Tell Me More About That Volcano", and "Our Man Flint". LP, Vinyl record album
