AerosmithAerosmith (180 gram vinyl) (2013 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Columbia, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 24.99
The swaggering, hard grooving and hard rocking debut of Aerosmith! While "Dream On" gets as much or more rock radio play than any song should ever need, it's actually pretty easy to overlook just how good the rest of the record is. They may borrow the bluesy swagger of the Stones and heavy riffing of Led Zeppelin, but it's ultimately a heavy, but accessible rock sound that's distinctively all their own. Includes "Dream On", "Make It", "Somebody", "Walkin The Dog", "Write Me", and "Mama Kin". LP, Vinyl record album

A important record from Joan Baez – one that has the singer expanding her sound, but in all the right possible ways – bringing in some Nashville elements to her folksy roots! The record features some larger backings arranged by producer Norbert Putnam – with bits of strings, The Memphis Horns, and some backup vocals – but most of a focus around the core combo of the album, which includes Charlie McCoy on harmonica, and Pete Wade and Norman Blake on guitars. Clarence CarterSlip Away – The Ultimate Clarence Carter 1966 to 1971 (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $26.99
Sublime sounds from Clarence Carter – wonderful work from his singles for Fame Records – a wealth of great music from a time when Carter was really coming into his own! Clarence was great right from the start, but here you can really hear him finding his own voice – that all-knowing, storytelling approach that could make even a simple lyric spin out in a way that was totally captivating – with a quality that set Carter apart from some of his more tear-jerked southern soul contemporaries, into a space of class and confidence that would serve him well for years to come! Every number here was recorded at the Fame Studios, with the kind of killer backings you'd expect from the Muscle Shoals team – and the 2LP set features 24 titles that include "Slip Away", "Looking For A Fox", "The Feeling Is Right", "Snatching It Back", "Patches", "I Found What I Wanted", "Look What I Got", "Too Weak To Fight", "I'm Qualified", "Tell Daddy", "Think About It", and lots more! Vanguard, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
Not just the Vanguard debut of the great Jack Elliott – but a set that also features a rare appearance by Bob Dylan on harmonica – billed on the cover as "Tedham Porterhouse"! Dylan aside, though, the album's a great one from Jack – that unusual mix of folk and western styles brought to his music, with a cliche-free quality that really gets through to his charms. The record features a bit of occasional other instrumentation – from Bill Lee on bass, Erik Darling on mouth harp, Eric Weissberg on bass, and John Hammond on mouth harp – and titles include "Diamond Joe", "Guabi Guabi", "Roving Gambler", "Portland Town", "More Pretty Girls", "1913 Massacre", and "House Of The Rising Sun". Everly BrothersRoots (180 gram pressing) (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Warner, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Sublime country rock and superb vocals from the Everly Brothers – an album as close to our hearts as the much more hipster-celebrated work of the era by Gram Parsons, the Byrds and others! The Everlys grasped onto their significance throughout the 60s by hopping from trend to trend with little success – but they finally nailed it in 1968 with this effort. (Artistically, if not commercially.) The boys apply their staggering harmonies to country and country-ish material, adding their own unique spin to the tunes – and earnestly work in some montages of their family radio shows from the early 50s! It's easily their most endearing work of the 60s. Produced by Lenny Waronker with strings by Nick DeCaro. Includes wonderful versions of Jimmie Rodgers' "T For Texas", "Shady Grove", Randy Newman's "Illinois", Ray Price's "You Done Me Wrong", Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried" and "Sing Me Back Home", plus "Ventura Boulvard" and "Turn Around" written by Ron Elliot of Beau Brummels. Jef GilsonJef Gilson Et Malagasy (4CD set) (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... CD
Jazzman (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $24.99
An amazing blend of jazz and global elements – and some of the most exciting material ever from French jazzman Jef Gilson! Gilson was a modernist right from the start – an artist whose piano work of the 60s was on a par with Martial Solal, and who was already beginning to branch out by the end of the decade into a range of unusual projects! The material here has Jef really coming into his own – exploring the sounds and styles of Madagascar with his Malagasy group – one of the most important cross-cultural acts on the European scene of the 70s – with a power and presence that's only being fully appreciated today. This beautiful set brings together four rare albums by Gilson and the group – originally issued on his own Palm Records label, and lovingly repackaged by Jazzman with full notes on the music in both French and English. The style is quite unique – sometimes electrified a bit on tracks that feature guitar and Gilson on Fender Rhodes – sometimes more acoustic and organic when the percussion takes over a bit – and always with these wonderful reed passages that reach out with lots of spiritual energy, and tones that rival the best of the post-Coltrane generation in the US. Different albums include Malagasy/Gilson, Madagascar Now, Malagasy At Newport-Paris, and Les Touches Noires – the last of which features a number of unissued or rare tracks by the group. Really wonderful stuff – and work we'd put up there with the best MPS Jazz Meets World recordings, or 70s treasures by Mulatu, or some of Lloyd Miller's best! CD

A cool 45 from one of the greatest Italian horror soundtracks ever – and the album that firmly put Goblin on the map! Side one features the amazing "Profondo Rosso" theme – a slow-building monster with lots of brooding bass and these very spooky keyboards! Side two features "Death Dies" – a number that's a bit more upbeat, but still pretty tense – almost like a great "chase" theme from an American cop/crime soundtrack! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Stephen John KalinichWorld Of Peace Must Come (colored vinyl) (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Light In The Attic, 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99 22.98
A really lost chapter in the career of Brian Wilson – an album produced by the famous Beach Boy for poet Stephen John Kalinich, done with a bit of music and vocals by Wilson himself! The record's quite odd – spare, thoughtful poetry – often recorded with slight production touches that make the vocals sound nicely weird – and occasional bits of music or other Wilson-like touches, but all in ways that are quite different from any Beach Boys work. Kalinich's words had an impact on the Friends album by the Beach Boys, but the feel here is a lot darker – and at the few points when Brian's background vocals come into play, it creates a great sense of contrast that hints at the darker corners of the late 60s world of pop in SoCal. Titles include "The Deer The Elk The Raven", "Candy Face Lane", "Lonely Man", "A World Of Peace Must Come", "If You Knew", and "America I Know You". Also features a bonus demo of "Leaves Of Grass". Quite a cool one from this hip prog band – a special single in a very cool cover – with great sound throughout! "Felona" begins with this cool bell-like chime – ringing out over strummed acoustic guitar with the tune's joyous lyric – before the whole thing then hits a heavier proggish keyboard and electric part in the middle! "L'Equilibrio" starts with a wicked keyboard line right at the start – as great as anything that Yes or Genesis might have produced at the time – especially the latter – and the solo near the end is worth the price of the whole single! 7-inch, Vinyl record

A definite treasure from Taj Mahal – especially for fans of his excellent early work for Columbia Records! The first CD in the package features unreleased studio tracks recorded during the glory days for Columbia – not rough cuts or demos, but well-finished gems that offer up the same sublime mix of modes – a bit of blues with plenty of soul – that you'd expect from Taj! Titles include "Shady Grove", "Butter", "Yan Nah Mama Loo", "Chainey Do", "Sweet Mama Janisse", "Ain't Gwaine Whistle Dixie", and "Jacob's Ladder". CD two features more rare treats – a full concert recorded in London in 1970 – never issued before, and really well-produced. Easy to dream with Dean Martin with the record's this mellow – a great late night session that really shows Dino sparkling on a set of laidback ballads and love tunes! The style's a great reminder that Martin could be as good of a ballad singer as he was an upbeat jokester and hipster – a quality that didn't always some through as strongly in his Rat Pack years. Backing is by a cool jazz combo – with Barney Kessel on guitar, Ken Lane on piano, Red Mitchell on bass, and Irv Cottler on drums – and titles include "I'll Buy That Dream", "I'm Confessin", "Blue Moon", "I Don't Know Why", "Hands Across The Table", "Smile", and the original recording of "Everybody Loves Somebody". Randy NewmanRandy Newman (180 gram vinyl mono version – with original cover) (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Reprise, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
An insanely wonderful first album from Randy Newman – and a perfect example of the way his unique style was a key confluence of all the best elements simmering underneath both late 60s LA and late 60s Warner Brothers! There's an instantly nostalgic quality to the record, but one that's nicely undercut by Newman's familiar sense of wit – a bit more subtle here, and presented with amazing backings from Van Dyke Parks – who almost brings in a lightly symphonic touch at times. The work's almost in the vein of hipper jazz sides by Bob Dorough or Dave Frishberg at the time – and although some of the tunes are familiar from later versions, they still sound best here in Randy's originals. Titles include "Love Story", "So Long Dad", "I Think He's Hiding", "Laughing Boy", "Cowboy", "The Beehive State", "Davy The Fat Boy", and "Bet No One Ever Hurt This Bad". LP, Vinyl record album

Rare material from the legendary Alexander Robotnick – tracks from mid 80s European singles, plus a few from his own archives as well! Robotnick's got an approach to his work that borrows from earlier Kraftwerk experiments, but fuses the electronics with a much more dancefloor-driven groove – a sound that's held up far more strongly over the years than most of his Italian and German contemporaries, and which often displays a free-thinking approach to melody that was years ahead of its time! This is work that can be appreciated by experimentalists and clubbers alike – a rare breed of tracks that are finally getting their proper exposure to the world! Brilliant work from the Thing – the first album on their own label, and maybe the most powerful set we've heard from them to date! The trio is an outlet for some of the fiercest sounds from this all-star lineup – a group that features Mats Gustafsson on tenor, soprano, baritone, and bass saxophones – with Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on electric bass and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums. And while all players can serve up intensity in other settings, they're really over the top on this powerful set – which features these bristling sounds from Flaten's bass, which then seem to set fire and echo from Gustafsson's horns – driven on by the powerhouse drumming of Paal! This special EP features two tracks – "Empty From Bawling" and "Bruises Without Contact". 7-inch, Vinyl record

Torbjorn ZetterbergOch Den Stora Fragan (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Moserobie (Sweden), 2014. New Copy ... $26.99
Bold, beautiful work from one of our favorite contemporary bassists – a player with a great ear for his own instrument, and for its larger place in music as well! Torbjorn Zetterburg really hits things hard with this great set – writing, arranging, and producing a set of material that effortlessly mixes jagged edges, warm tones, and modern phrasing – all handled very deftly by a group that includes the great Jonas Kullhammar on tenor, baritone, and flute – plus Alberto Pinton on baritone and flute, Mts Aleklint on trombone, Susana Santos Silva on trumpet and flugelhorn, and Jon Falt on drums. At times, the music swings hard with a Mingus-like blend of bassy bottom and freewheeling solos – but at other points, the mode shifts into more textural, tonal explorations – carefully planned to further the energy and feeling of the more swinging moments. The result is the most compelling album from Zetterburg to date – a set that includes the tracks "Hyllning Till Ovissheten", "Visa Fran Mitten Av Universum", "Ingen Tid Till Ingenting", "Do Dodo Do Do Do", and "En Bra Start Pa Dagen". Rough Guide, 2014. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A wicked little set that really gets at the way that Latin record collecting has moved way past the usual sounds from New York, Puerto Rico, and Cuba – to embrace a whole host of styles from around the globe! In a world of collections that feature oft-reissued numbers from the Fania catalog, this set goes way further to dig up a whole host of gems from north and south of the border – and even a few from the other side of the Atlantic as well – mostly older numbers, but also including a few contemporary cuts that fit well alongside the vintage numbers. Pablo Yglesias handled the track selection, with the same quality he brings to other Latin projects too – and titles include "Bamba Cure" by Mario Allison, "No Pago Na" by Alfredo Gutierrez, "Esa Mujer" by Los Kenya, "Denisth" by Grupo 2000, "Funky Tumbao" by Setenta, "My Shingaling Boy" by Spanglish Fly, "Domingo Por La Manana" by Carlos Pickling, "Black Shadow" by Orchestra Dee Jay, "Pensamiento" by Piper Pimienta, "Do You Want To Be Free" by Gilberto Sextet, and "Chevere" by Joe Quijana. A great take on the East Side Story series of soul music compilations from the west coast – that famous less-than-legit collection that featured the kind of killer cuts that really made the Chicano soul scene great! Numero offer their own version of that format, by putting together their own batch of Chicago soul gems – both rare singles, and the kind of unissued tracks you'll find on their other compilations – but which you'd never see in the original series! The work is great – very laidback on the group soul numbers, but with a few harder edges too – and titles include "This Is The Ending Of Our Love" by The Si-Berians, "That's The Kind Of Love" by The Mystics, "I'll Get You Back" by Renaldo Domino, "It Ain't Fair" by Calvin Harris, "Gotta Get Through To You" by Final Solution, "Puppet On A String" by Young Souls, "You Hurt Me" by Donnell Pitmann, "Blowing With The Wind" by Intentions, and "I Don't Wanna Be Late" by The Notations. Numero, 1970s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Ah for the day of the hometown radio station – those halcyon 70s years when local rock powerhouses really reigned the airwaves, and could shape the listening tastes of an entire region of listeners! And back in the day, some of the stations were so strong, they acted as key forces in the record business too – putting out compilations that drew attention to up-and-coming artists from their local scene – often featuring a fair bit of great work that never got exposure otherwise! With this sweet little set, Numero Group pay tribute to this overlooked genre of album – the kind that we bought years ago from Chicago stations like WLUP or WKQX – but presented here by the imaginary WTNG (The Numero Group – get it?) As with any other Numero collection, the set's overflowing with rare material – but the vibe is different than most of what they've featured so far – lots of cool, mellow, underground 70s rock – well-produced, but locally issued – with a flavor that's quite different than the bigger work coming from the coasts at the time. The whole thing's a wonderful musical discovery – the kind we've really come to expect from Numero over the years – with tracks that include "Aladdin" by Roach Band, "Try To Be True" by Caroline Peyton, "Your Love Rolled Over Me" by Timoth, "I'd Like To Touch A Star" by Lester Brothers, "Between Us" by Cream & Sugar, "Fantasy Woman" by Lorren Cornelius, "Heaven's Child" by Dwain Virgil, and "I Got Cha" by Green flow. A selection of work from the legendary ZTT – a label that gave the world plenty of groundbreaking music in the early 80s – thanks to the studio genius of Trevor Horn! The set really showcases the chunky, brash, arty approach that the label brought to its music – served up in chapters that offer both the organization and disorganization of pop. This limited box set features 10 different 45s from ZTT – all with original artwork as well! A really wonderful project that was years in the making – a mix of American club and Brazilian elements – put together by a group that includes members of Azymuth and Banda Black Rio, as well as the legendary Arthur Verocai! Jose Roberto Bertrami's the strongest contributor here – and the music really echoes that great late 70s/early 80s point when the Azymuth fusion groove crossed over into tighter, funkier territory – coming off here with a sound that's got really universal appeal and a wickedly classic vibe overall – like some unusual cross-breeding of Brazilian grooves and Salsoul Records! Vocals are by Mia Mendes and Marcina Arnold, but the instrumentation is even better than the lyrics – filled with jazzy touches, blended with bits of strings, and perfectly produced all the way through. A fresh, breezy and brilliant compilation of rare Brazil – wonderful material from the early 60s through the end of the decade – the fourth in the Viagem series compiled by Nicola Conte, and it's the best yet! Viagem celebrates the jazzier side of 60s Brazil – bossa, samba and rawly rhythmic Afro-Brazilian grooves inspired by the best and freshest jazz of the US and European scenes. It's deep stuff, too – with a lot of great material we're hearing for the first time! We always expect the moon from Nicola Conte – whether it's his own modern, though classic jazz-inspired grooves – or in his role as a masterful, generous compiler. The man delivers every damn time! This limited 10" vinyl pressing has a mighty groovy cover and format – and features 8 tracks from the CD collection. LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited to 500 copies.)

New BeauregardeTestify/I (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... 7-inch
Jackpot, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Oddball early 70s psych rock from Beauregarde – a Portland, OR reared professional wrestler – backed by a band that includes future Wiper Greg Sage on electric guitar! "Testify" is a totally credible post-psych nugget, circa '71 – with Beauregarde testifying/speak singing over a hard psych-blues backdrop that gets nice and wigged out by the end of it. The flip is "I", similar but slower cooking, with some groovy organ in the mix. 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Numbered, limited edition of 1000!)

New Sam CookeAin't That Good News (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
RCA/Abkco, 1964. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Good news galore from the great Sam Cooke – maybe THE album in which he fully shows off his unique contribution to soul music in the 60s – that mix of raw and sweet, easygoing and progressive – a mode that had a huge impact at the time, and went onto become a strong influence for years to come! Key proof of this approach is the landmark track "A Change is Gonna Come" – a slyly righteous track that became a huge Civil Rights anthem and has continued to have social power for many years. And even the more mundane titles have a fresh approach too – like the hit "Another Saturday Night", and a host of other gems that include "Home", "No Second Time", "The Riddle Song", "Good Times", "Meet Me At Mary's Place", and "Rome Wasn't Built In A Day". New Donny HathawayLive At The Bitter End, 1971 (180 gram vinyl) (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Atco, 1971. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Amazing concert material from Donny Hathaway – tracks recorded during the sessions for his famous live album on Atco, but appearing here as an album for the first time ever! The tracks are very much in the best spirit of the Donny Hathaway Live record – with a lean, stripped-down band that really lays in the groove – giving Donny the same sort of support that Curtis Mayfield got on his equally sublime Curtis/Live set! Most takes are nice and long, and very open-ended – and although some of this material initially appeared on the 4CD Hathaway box a few years back, it's offered up here in a stunning LP that's a companion to the original release – with an exclusive 21 minute take on "Voices Inside (Everything Is Everything)" that's issued here for the first time – plus "The Ghetto", "Hey Girl", "Jealous Guy", "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know", "What's Going On", "Little Ghetto Boy", "You've Got A Friend", "Sack Full Of Dreams", and "He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother". New David HessLast House On The Left – Original 1972 Motion Picture Soundtrack (picture disc) (2014 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
One Way Static, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
David Hess's chillingly great soundtrack to one of the most notorious horror movies of the 70s – Wes Craven's Last House On The Left! Hess's musical pedigree is that of a folk and rock songwriter – and one of the things that makes his songs for Last House On The Left so effective is the way his delicate, tuneful songcraft contrasts with the terrifyingly real sadism and revenge on screen. The other thing that makes it so effective, is that Hess himself portrays the despicable Krug in the film – taking part in said cruelty! The soundtrack has Hess's oddly lovely little songs, along with some incidental period touches, swatches of dialogue and instrumental bits – composed in collaboration with Steve Chapin. This version from One Way Static is totally top notch, too – with liner notes by exploitation cinema and genre veterans Ruggero Deodato, Franco Nero, Ulli Lommel and others. Includes "Little Cows Lookin' For Some Grass", "Baddie's Theme (Instrumental)", "Mari's Birthday Surprise", "Phyllis Spills Her Guts", "Now You're All Alone", "The Chase", "Daddy, Put Your Coat Of Many Colors On", "Mayhem Montage", "Ice Cream Song", "Urban Snatch", "Edude For Chainsaw/Goodbye, Dick" and more.
