Aerosmith — Get Your Wings (180 gram vinyl) (2013 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Columbia, 1974. New Copy (reissue).... $24.99
Aerosmith's second album – and a prime slab of badass mid 70s rock – coming close to, maybe even equalling Toys In The Attic as ultimate Aerosmith badassery! It's got a tighter, puncier sound their debut – courtesy producer Jack Douglas – who would continue to produce Aerosmith in their pre-blowout 70s best. It opens on with one of their staples, "Same Old Song And Dance" and other tracks include their kickass cover of "Train Kept A Rollin'", plus "Lord Of The Thighs", "Spaced", "Woman Of The World" and "Pandora's Box".

Aerosmith — Toys In The Attic (180 gram vinyl) (2013 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Columbia, 1975. New Copy (reissue).... $24.99
Aerosmith at their most classic! At their peak, Aerosmith brought a hard rock edge to the more groove oriented boogie and blues rock influences. Toys In the Attic is most certainly one of their peaks, if not THE peak. Includes the all time greats "Walk This Way" and "Sweet Emotion", plus "Big Ten Inch Record", "Uncle Salty", "Round And Round", "You See Me Crying", "Adam's Apple" and "No More No More".

Big Brother & The Holding Company — Cheap Thrills (180 gram vinyl mono edition) (2012 Record Store Day Black Friday Release) ... LP
Columbia/Legacy, 1968. New Copy Gatefold (reissue).... $24.99
Cheap Thrills, maybe – but they cut deeply and last forever! This is one of the greatest albums by Big Brother & The Holding Company – and it's also one of the most important in cementing the legacy of singer Janis Joplin. The raw manic energy of the group at their live best is somehow bottled and presented on record as perfectly as it ever could be – and even better are the delicate moments that show such an incredible depth! Titles include "Turtle Blues", "Oh Sweet Mary", "Ball & Chain", "Summertime", "Piece Of My Heart", and "I Need A Man To Love".

Brother Ali — Shadows On The Sun (picture disc – with download) (2013 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Rhymesayers, 2003. New Copy 2LP (reissue).... $27.99
Ahhh. . . Nice! Wonderful intelligent, spiritual rhymes, full of Islamic prayer references, blunt antagonist rhymes, a battle with the ugliest of inner demons and broken artist poverty all hugged by catchy bouncing hook filled choruses. And all the production is handled by Ant, a true autuer akin to Pete Rock, now becoming more comfortable with his art with each release: tight organ loops, snapping drums, bright horns and nice upright basslines. "Soulful" is the key adjective here. Tracks include "Star Quality", "Pay Them Back", "Shadows On The Sun", "Forest Whitiker", "Room With A View", "Back Stage Pacin", "Missing Teeth", "Dorian", "Soul Whisper", "Champion", "Prince Charming", and more! Side F to this triple vinyl set has 4 added instrumental versions!

Cypress Hill — Black Sunday (180 gram vinyl) (2013 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Ruffhouse/Simply Vinyl, 1993. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue).... $24.99
The second LP from Cypress Hill, and as far as we're concerned, the last great one. Muggs' beats get a bit darker on this album, but are still sharp enough to cut through even the thickest clouds of smoke. 14 tracks in all, including "I Wanna Get High", "I Ain't Goin' Out Like That", "Insane In The Brain", "When The Sh** Goes Down", "Hits FromThe Bong", "A To The K", "Hand On The Glock" and "Break 'Em Off Some".

new Miles Davis — Milestones (180 gram vinyl – mono edition) (2013 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Columbia, 1958. New Copy (reissue).... $24.99
One of our 50s favorites by Miles Davis – and a record that offers the same twin-sax sound as his classic Kind Of Blue – with both John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley working alongside Miles in the group! Rhythm here is by the Prestige-era trio of Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – but it's the two saxophonists who really help Davis shape the feel of the record, pushing things past the initial Coltrane/Davis groove with a really wonderful sense of space and sound! Titles include the classic "Milestones", plus "Two Bass Hit", "Dr Jeckyll", and "Sid's Ahead".

new Miles Davis — Round About Midnight (180 gram vinyl – mono edition) (2013 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Columbia, 1956. New Copy (reissue).... $24.99
Thelonious Monk wrote the title tune, but Miles Davis makes it almost his own here – blowing with a subtly moody magic that makes the album one of his true treasures from the early Columbia years! John Coltrane's along on tenor sax – helping Davis expand the sound the pair first forged on Prestige – and also present is the rhythm trio of Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones – impeccably recorded here with a wonderful sense of space. Titles include Miles seminal take on "Round Midnight", plus "Tadd's Delight", "Dear Old Stockholm", "Bye Bye Blackbird", and "A Leu Cha".

Miles Davis — Sketches Of Spain (180 gram vinyl mono edition) (2012 Record Store Day Black Friday Release) ... LP
Columbia, 1960. New Copy (reissue).... $24.99
A beautiful collaboration between Miles Davis and the great Gil Evans – and perhaps the most perfectly realized of all their projects! The album's got a wonderfully unified feel – as it begins with long compositions that have a distinct Spanish-tinge (and not a Latin-tinge, which is an important distinction to the way the album progresses.) Evans' arrangements have a majesty that takes the songs to the next level – working them as lush, lively backings for Davis' equally majestic trumpet solos, some of the finest he ever recorded with large group backing. Wonderful all the way through – and with the tracks "Concierto De Aranjuez", "Saeta", "The Pan Piper", and "Solea".

new Miles Davis — Someday My Prince Will Come (180 gram vinyl – mono edition) (2013 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Columbia, 1961. New Copy (reissue).... $24.99
The tenor sax here makes the album a standout – as John Coltrane still works with Miles Davis on 2 tracks for the record, but Blue Note stalwart Hank Mobley joins in on the rest! The approach is similar to that of the classic Coltrane/Davis years – and in a way, the record's kind of a swan song to that period – one of the last studio session that Miles would cut in such an unabashedly sweet and lyrical way. And while Mobley's always better known for his harder-blown notes at Blue Note, he sounds totally great here next to Davis – really keeping up the gentle spirit and spaciousness of the record, and working with a gentleness that surpasses even his work on the legendary Soul Station album. Rhythm is by the trio of Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb – and titles include Miles' classic version of "Someday My Prince Will Come", plus "Old Folks", "Teo", "Drad-Dog", and "Pfrancing".

new Dieuf Dieul De Thies — Aw Sa Yone Vol 1 (2013 Record Store Day Release) ... CD
Teranga Beat (Senegal), 1981. New Copy .... $19.99
Amazing sounds from Senegal – a group working here with a trio of singers and some mighty great guitar from Papa Seck – all wrapped up into a groove that mixes the earthy with the trippy! The rhythms bump around with some really hypnotic elements, and often wrap the guitar right around the percussion – while the vocals then blast out with an unexpected sense of power and surprise! Titles include "Na Binta", "Aling Na Djimbe", "Yande", "Ndiguele", and "Mariama Yayou Salam".

A totally amazing look at Lee Hazlewood's late 60s record label – served up in a host of rare singles by other artists who were working with Lee at the time! The range of styles is wide, but there's a really focused feel to the whole thing – given Hazlewood's key touches in the studio behind the singers, and his undeniable sense of wit and warmth, which makes just about all these artists sound way better with Lee than they would on their own! Thrill Jockey, 2012. New Copy .... $9.99 15.98
A split LP by 2 of the better psyche folk bands in modern rock – Hush Arbors and Arbouretum – a team effort that makes sense stylistically on top of the conveniently alliterate band names! Hush Arbors' 5 songs kick it off in timeless, insistently melodic fashion. Arbouretum deliver 3 longer tracks to close, nicely akin to the preceding Hush Arbour tracks, though with more hypnotic vibe. Both bands have a nice bit of fuzz in the guitars. Great stuff! The Includes "Lovely Ghost", "Prayer Of Forgetfulness", "Up Yr Coast", "People & Places" and "The Sleeper" by Hush Arbors. Arbouretum's tracks includes "New Scarab", "The Black Sun" and "St Anthony's Fire".

Invisible Hands — Insect Dilemma/Disallowed (2013 Record Store Day Release) ... 7-inch
Abduction, 2013. New Copy (pic cover).... $8.99
One of the catchiest tunes we've heard from Invisible Hands – the great "Insect Dilemma", which has this nasally hook that almost takes us back to early Sun City Girls days! "Disallowed" is slower and darker, but kind of with a wink and a nod – and "Lili Twil" has a warmer female folksy quality, but still in kind of an eerie way!

Pre-Voidoids and Pre-Ramones hard rock band featuring Marc Bell, aka Marky Ramone – with their self-titled and Hard Attack records – together in a 2LP set! Titles include "Shady Grove", "Butter", "Yan Nah Mama Loo", "Chainey Do", "Sweet Mama Janisse", "Ain't Gwaine Whistle Dixie", and "Jacob's Ladder". CD two features more rare treats – a full concert recorded in London in 1970 – never issued before, and really well-produced. Titles include "Runnin By The Riverside", "Big Fat", "Diving Duck Blues", "Bacon Fat", "Tomorrow May Not Be Your Day", and "Checkin Up On My Baby".

new Willie Nelson — Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I Die (album, solo) (green vinyl) (2013 Record Store Day Release) ... 7-inch
Legacy, 2013. New Copy (pic cover).... $9.99 Just Sold Out!
A 7-inch single commemorating Willie Nelson's 80th birthday – and his faith in and use of a particularly herbal remedy! Includes the Heroes album version of "Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I Die" with fellow aficionado Snoop Dogg, plus longtime friend and collaborator Kris Kristifferson and Willie acolyte Jamey Johnson. It's a fun track, but the real keeper is the flipside – Willie Nelson's previously unreleased solo version. Willie's often at his best when he's recorded in sparer, lonelier settings, and that's true for this track, too.

new Vuolo/E Grande — Desert (2013 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Giraffa/Strut (UK), 1979. New Copy .... $15.99 Just Sold Out!
A hip bit of sound library funk from the Italian Giraffa label – a batch of tunes that's almost a mix between horror soundtracks and jazz funk – served up with all the right keyboard and guitar touches of both! There's a slight electro vibe to the record at points – almost a mode that would be right at home in the Cosmic scene – but there's also a bit more warmth too, a sensitivity that makes the longer tunes really shimmer and sparkle nicely. And although a sound library set, the tracks have a much deeper sense of composition – not just simple rhythms, but tunes that change up nicely as they roll on. Titles include "The End", "Creation", "Soft Melody", "Leaving", "Take Flight", "Drops In The Wind", and "Transvesuvian".

Some of the earliest material ever recorded by David Bowie – served up in a relatively mod style, with great Brit production from the legendary Shel Talmy! Bowie's working here as David Jones – with either The Manish Boys or Lower Third groups – often with a bit more soul in the mix than some of his later work, showing the changing sound of London in this crucial year. Jimmy Page plays guitar on two tracks – "I Pity The Fool" and "Take My Tip" – and the EP also features the tracks "You've Got A Habit Of Leaving" and "Baby Loves That Way".

Conveyor, 2013. New Copy DVD .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great look at one of the indie giants in record retailing – Louisville's proud Ear X-Tacy Records – a pretty great shop for over 25 years! The film captures the store at a relatively sad point in its history – fighting to stay alive amidst a changing industry, and eventually not able to make it – a story that's been the same for far too many stores in the past decade or so. But there's also a nice spirit of celebration, too – and given how much stores like this are becoming a thing of the past, it's nice to have some well-documented footage – so we can still visually shop the Ear X-Tacy racks!

A well-done love letter to the record store – pitched in the title as a vanishing breed, but well-demonstrated by the film as alive and well! The documentary takes a look at industry shifts that had led to a lot of closures of record stores, but also features a pretty celebratory look at the new independent spirit in record retailing, now that most of the giants are gone. Filmed from a British perspective, but pretty universal overall – with great appearances by Paul Weller, Billy Bragg, Norman Cook, Johnny Marr, and others. 124 minutes, with lots of bonus features!

One of our favorite tunes ever from Jethro Tull – a cool jazzy number that's almost more Herbie Mann or Harold McNair than the usual Tull groove! The bluesy bottom really drops out of the group's sound – and instead a hip bassline sets the tune up nicely for some sweet solo flute, and these catchy lyrics that are some of the most hook-heavy that Ian Anderson's ever sung! Limited pic sleeve EP also features "Witch's Promise", "Life Is A Long Song", and "Teacher (UK version 2013 mix)".

Van Dyke Parks' masterpiece – and one of the hippest records to come out of LA in the 60s! The album's a strangely anachronistic one – steeped in the kind of past-days scoring found on early records by Harpers Bizarre and Randy Newman (both of which Parks had a hand in!), wrapped around simply poetic songs about the scene and state of affairs in late 60s LA, all handled with a cinematic approach that's aging Hollywood at its best! Titles include Randy Newman's "Vine Street" – plus "By The People", "Laurel Canyon Blvd", "Donovan's Colours", and "The All Golden".

Cotillion, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 10x7inch (pic cover).... $69.99 74.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer collection of singles from the legendary Cotillion arm of Atlantic Records – all presented as individual 7" records with original labels, served up in a hip limited edition package! The work here would already be great as a CD compilation – but it's extra special when served up in this stunning format – like finding a pile of rare soul singles in the back of a rack in an overlooked record store – still in great shape, and ready to explode anew on your turntable! The music is very well-chosen – and includes cuts by some key artists who only worked briefly for Cotillion, and never cut a full album for the label – such as Baby Washington, Otis Clay, or Walter Jackson. Other artists are ones who really hit their height at Cotillion, but still remain relatively obscure – and the singles here easily represent some of their best work ever. All cuts are right from the hippest tail end of the 60s – and titles include "Do Right Woman" and "That Kind Of Lovin" by Otis Clay, "Keep On Striving" and "Come On Let Me Love You" by Moses Smith, "Night After Night" and "The Love That I Needed" by The Blendells, "The Love Of My Woman" and "I Wanna Go Home" by Darrell Banks, "I've Fallen In Love" and "You Are The Circus" by C & The Shells, "Any Way That You Want Me" and "Life Has Its Ups & Downs" by Walter Jackson, "I Gotta Get Back To Lovin You" and "LA/USA" by Hollywood Spectrum, "I Don't Know" and "I Can't Afford To Lose Him" by Baby Washington, "Don't Play That Song" and "People In Love" by Lou Johnson, and "Ain't No Sun" and "Murder IN The First Degree" by The Dynamics.

Rounder, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 10x45s .... $49.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Stunning stuff – and one of the few reissues we've ever seen to really do justice to this legendary New Orleans soul label! The Ric and Ron imprints were a key indie force in the development of Crescent City soul music – home to some of the better artists who didn't get scooped up by the bigger companies – still working for the hometown label to really serve up the real New Orleans vibe! This special package is put together by the joint forces of Rounder, Ace, and Numero – three labels that have already turned us onto a wealth of great music over the years – and it's a limited edition of 1500 copies, with a host of previously unreleased tracks – all pressed up as 10 funky 45s, in a sweet box with a booklet! Essential stuff for any fan of New Orleans soul – or 60s soul in general – with previously unissued tracks that include "Lena Come What May (demo)" by Al Johnson, "Found My Good Thing" and "Question Of Love" by Barbara Lynn, "I Won't Cry (audition)" and "Walking The Floor Over You" by Johnny Adams, "Blues Cha Cha" by Edgar Blanchard & The Gondoliers, "Goofer" by Paul Marvin", and "Nothing Withotu You", "Satisfied With Your Love", and "Ain't You Ashamed" by Eddie Bo.

A great batch of early 70s grooves from Thailand – all produced by Theppabutr Satirodchompu – and it's one of the best compilations of Thai music we've ever stocked! By focusing on the work of one legendary producer – over the span of just a few years – the set has nicely cohesive vibe. That said, it's a quite expansive sound! Revolving vocals and melodies make it as hypnotic as can be –- and the instrumentation is fantastic. Raw drums, bells and other hand percussion lie underneath bursts of horns, woozy organs and other textures. It's beautifully put together by the Zudrangma label and compiler Maft Sai – with a thick booklet and top-notch sound. Titles include "Lam Yao Salab Teoy", "Siang Toey Jak Jai", "Lam Pleanr Caroen Jit", "Keun Pen Ken Faai" and more by Banyen Rakkaaen, "Lam Plearn Kiew Bao", "Lam Plearn Ha Fan" and more by Chanpen Sirithep, "Lam Plearn Sam Jang Wa" by Sumalee Pongkate, "Tid Kiew Tiew Krung" by Porn Tawan, "Hug Al Bor" by Roeid Petchsiam and more. 17 tracks in all.

new Mario Biondi & The High Five Quintet — This Is What You Are (orig, Opolopo rmx) (2013 Record Store Day release) ... 12-inch
Expansion (UK), 2013. New Copy .... $12.99 Out Of Stock
A special single with some great vocals from Mario Biondi – singing here with some especially great backings from the High Five Quintet! "This Is What You Are" is a warm modal groover – one that builds beautifully from the ground up, and which is made especially nice by Mario's warmly raspy vocals! The remix pumps things up a bit more on the rhythms – yet still keeps all the jazzy charm of the tune intact!
(Hand numbered limited edition of 750. Labels seem to be reversed, too)

new Bonobo — North Borders (7 X 10" box set) (2013 Record Store Day Release) ... 12-inch
Ninja Tune, 2013. New Copy 7 x 10 " .... $62.99 Out Of Stock
A deeply effective set from Bonobo! North Borders has beats that are as compelling as any in Bonobo's canon – often thumping pretty hard – paired with gorgeous electronic sound washes and really deft use of vocal samples and guest singers. The mix of compelling beats and lighter, more ethereal atmosphere is a nice touch – and the use of voices, whether sampled or sung by a guest, really brings in an uncommon emotional depth. Includes "First Fires" with Grey Reverend, "Emkay", "Don't Wait", "Cirrus", "Heaven For The Sinner" with Erykah Badu, Towers" with Sjerdene, "Jets", "Antenna", "Know You", "Ten Tigers", "Sapphire", "Transits" and "Pieces" feat Cornella. Limited 7 X 10" box set edition for Record Store Day 2013.
