✨✧ VariousClassic Mellow Vol 3 ... CD
MVP, 1970s/Early 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The kind of soul they never should have stopped making – mostly pulled from that wonderful time in the 70s when jazzy grooves, warm vocals, and sophisticated production came together beautifully! The set features 12 tracks that were mainly hits, but still stand as beautiful classics – tunes that sparkle with warmth and mellow soul that really hold up over the years. Titles include "You're Welcome Stop On By" by Bobby Womack, "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye, "I'm Going Down" by Rose Royce, "Lady Love" by Jon Lucien, "Heaven Must Be Like This" by Ohio Players, "Something He Can Feel" by Aretha Franklin, "Cruisin" by Smokey Robinson, "Feel The Fire" by Stephanie Mills, "Sweet Thing" by Rufus & Chaka Khan, and "Playing Your Game Baby" by Barry White. ✨✧ VariousClassic Funk Vol 1 ... CD
MVP, 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A nicely-priced set that's filled with essential numbers from the 70s – funky classics both mainstream and break-heavy, and as good a place as any to start if you want to put a bit of edge into your CD collection! There's no completely rarebits here, but the tracks here all definitely make the grade for "classic funk" – and titles include "Think" by Lyn Collins, "Doing It To Death (part 1)" by The JBs, "Freddie's Dead" by Curtis Mayfield, "Flashlight" by Parliament, "For The Love Of Money" by The O'Jays, "Pick Up The Pieces" by Average White Band, "Cross The Track" by Maceo & The Macks, "Make It Funky" by James Brown, and "Saturday Nite" by Earth Wind & Fire. ✨✧ VariousUnder The Influence Vol 9 – A Collection Of Rare Boogie & Disco Compiled By Alena Arpels ... CD
Z Records (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic entry in this long running series – a batch of compilations that normally focuses on rare disco grooves, but which also features a fair bit of funky soul nuggets this time around! The groove is still mostly uptempo, but with all these wonderfully weird, wild funky elements in the mix too – not gimmicky tracks, but the kind of unusually-crafted cuts that are quite far from the mainstream – and which show that there were often some really amazing things happening in the farther reaches of the soul music underground at the end of the 70s! Plus, most of these cuts are impossibly rare – so much so that many are reaching our ears for the first time, via this excellent compilation – in a list of tracks that includes "Specialty Item" by MVP Cloudburst, "Give Me Love" by EKG, "Disco 2000" by Pleze, "Flashback" by Jeff Burns, "Dance Your Blues (part 2)" by Spellboun, "Forget Yourself" by Body Heat, "Say Raise Your Hand & Say McNasty" by McNasty, "Reflex" by Reflections, "Reaching For Our Star" by Sharon Revoal, "Space Ghost (parts 1 & 2)" by Jackson Lee, "Spend Some Time With Me" by Rideout, "Move On" by Frederick, "I'm Into Your Love" by Executive Jam, "Seeking" by Cash Money, "Give It Up" by Horizon, and "Twilight" by Firewater. ✨✧ Mary J BligeBreakthrough ... CD
Geffen/Matriarch (UK), 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
Mary J Blige broke through well over a decade ago, but Breakthrough is an apt title for her eighth album – as it not only busts up the morass of mid 00s urban radio fodder – it also breaks through MJB's own creative doldrums – adding up her best work in years! It's certainly not a flawless listen (we could have lived without the U2 appearance) but the production is crisp and sparkling, leaning towards the seamless hip hop soul feel that Mary built her name upon – and remarkably consistent given the long list of contributors – including 9th Wonder, Will I Am, Raphael Saadiq, JUSTICE League, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and others. Tracks include "No One Will Do", Enough Cryin'" feat Brook, "About You" feat Will I Am, "Be Without You", "Can't Hide From Luv" feat Jay-Z, "MJB Da MVP", "I Found My Everything" feat Raphael Saadiq, "Father In You", "Alone" and more.
