Frances Lynne -- Remember (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
SSJ (Japan), 1991. New Copy .... $21.99
An early 90s session from Frances Lynne -- a singer who worked in the Bay Area strongly during the postwar era, but who also sounds pretty great here in her later years! Lynne's mostly singing standards on the set -- warmly familiar numbers that are arranged with a mixture of jazz and strings by Mike Abene -- and played by the John Coppola Orchestra, which features piano by Abene, trumpet by Coppola and Johnny Coles, alto from Herb Steward, tenor from John Handy, and drums from Eddie Marshall. The quality of the group really comes through, and makes the album way more than just a sleepwalked set of standards -- and although Frances' approach to the tunes is somewhat restrained, there's a maturity in her vocals that makes subtle feelings come through beautifully. Titles include "Spring Isn't Everything", "All Or Nothing At All", "Can I Forget You", "Remember", and "Blue Prelude".
