Elmer shows he's a consummate professional here – as he avoids any temptation to make things cheesy or sexy to fit the film, and instead turns out a top-shelf orchestral score played by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with some slight occasional voices at times. A real standout set from the end of Les Baxter's run at Capitol Records – originally scored for a film that was never released, but a great set of tracks that more than stands strongly on its own! The theme here is a Mexican/Latin American one – explored by Baxter with his trademark blend of larger orchestrations and lighter exotica touches – often swirling around in an extremely evocative mode that makes us wish the film had been issued to the public, and at a few key moments even hinting at the funkier modes that would follow on some of Les' later work for other labels. CD reissue of the full soundtrack to the film version of Guys & Dolls – one that not only contains all of the vocal performances from the movie, but also adds in additional songs from the play that weren't in the film – as well as three unedited studio outtakes as well! Due to contractual issues at the time of release, there was never a proper LP that featured the music – a damn shame, given that Frank Sinatra turns in some of his best on screen vocal performances ever in the movie – alongside a great cast that includes Vivian Blaine, Stubby Kaye, Jean Simmons, and even Marlon Brando – making a rare appearance here as a singer! Italian horror galore – and 2 great soundtracks from the 70s, back to back on one CD! Francesco De Masi served up the score for Lo Squatatore Di New York (The New York Ripper) – and it's got a sweet electric groove that's filled with plenty of slasher touches – fuzzy guitar, driving rhythms, and a few moodier cuts with spare keyboards that get nice and funky. Titles include "New York One Night", Even better, though, is Piero Piccioni's score for Una Tomba Aperta – a hauntingly mellow soundtrack that drifts along with that languid flowing style that Piero used on some of his best erotic scores. A few tunes have some darker, stronger orchestrations – but there's some beautifully mellow ones that slide in a sweet 70s Italian mode.
