✨✧ Jesse Ed DavisJesse Ed Davis/Ululu ... CD
Atco/Wounded Bird, 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Early solo work by Jesse Ed Davis – two albums in a single set! The self-titled Jesse Ed Davis set is one of a few records as a leader ever issued by the guitarist – a player who worked on countless other albums by big names in the late 60s and early 70s – but who has a very special flavor on his own! Davis is maybe best remembered as an important native American musician on the scene at the time – but his work here stands strongly with that of some of his hipper contemporaries – such as Eric Clapton, Leon Russel, and Gram Parsons – all of whom make an appearance here! Titles include the completely sublime "Golden Sun Goddess", worth the price of the album alone – plus "Tulsa County", "Every Night Is Saturday Night", "Crazy Love", "Reno Street Incident", and "Washita Love Child". Ululu has Jesse working with a number of his famous friends – including Leon Russell and Mac (Dr John) Rebennack – both of whose work the album owes a lot to. Jesse's got a down-home approach to his work – and sings a set of original tunes, plus versions of tracks by Merle Haggard, Leon Russell, Levon Helm, and Taj Mahal – which should give you a good idea of his frame of reference. Titles include "White Line Fever", "My Captain", "Sue Me Sue You Blues", "Ululu", "Alcatraz", and "Strawberry Wine". CD

✨✧ Eyeless In GazaSkelatal Framework – The Cherry Red Recordings 1981 to 1986 (5CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Early 1980s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A huge legacy of music from Eyeless In Gaza – an important British duo from the post-punk years, and one with a sound that definitely went on to shape the style of much bigger acts at the time! As with some of their darker contemporaries, the group began in a style that was stark and electric, but warmed things up as the records moved on, and they really learned how to hone their craft – especially the vocals of Martyn Bates, who has a pre-goth way of sounding spooky and soulful at the same time – all in a mode that's very British as well! Most tracks are pretty spare – lots of keyboards, moody bass, and guitar – and the set brings together 102 tracks from their albums for the Cherry Red label, plus singles too – in a box that has each of the five CDs divided up into thematic styles – running from catchy cuts on one disc to much more experimental work on another! ✨✧ Roxy MusicCountry Life ... CD
Reprise, 1974. Used ... $4.99
The fourth album from Roxy Music – a brilliant statement of their early genius through and through! The album has the group moving strongly past the Eno years, into a tighter framework that still contains many of the darker themes of earlier records. Ferry's lead vocals are incredibly majestic – rising to heights to match the European greats of years past who were his inspiration – and the group's tight blend of reeds, guitar, and moody keyboards gives the whole album an off-kilter sense of instrumentation that really sets it apart from the pack. There's an artfulness here that's never overdone, and the whole thing comes together with a magic that's impossible to describe, but which is Roxy at their best. Titles include "Out Of The Blue", "The Thrill Of It All", "Three & Nine", "Triptych", "Casanova", and "Prairie Rose". CD

✨✧ CureSeventeen Seconds ... LP
Fiction (UK), 1980. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A haunting and relatively spare early one by The Cure that holds up incredibly well – standing true to the test of time as strongly as anything in their canon! From the perspective of fans who got into The Cure anytime from the mid 80s onward, these earlier efforts might initially sound like a moody framework for the more grandly produced records to come, give it a couple listens, because the minimal structure is incredibly strong! It's just their second album, but the eerily melodic Robert Smith vocals, his just as distinctive guitars, and then new bass player Simon Gallup's sound have The Cure mood in full semi-gloomy, yet wholly beautiful bloom! Includes the great title track, "A Reflection", "Play For Today", "Secrets", "In Your House", "Three", "The Final Sound", "A Forest", "M" and "At Night". LP, Vinyl record album
(180 gram EU reissue from 2016. Includes the heavy inner sleeve.)

✨✧ Mary HopkinPost Card (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Apple, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
The sweet, lovely and lush full length debut of Mary Hopkin for Apple Records! Mary's vocals are fragile and sweet, and Paul McCartney's production frames it like a pillow on the softer tunes – with light bits of acoustic guitar – and makes are sound like the queen of all natural on the more grandly orchestrated tracks. 15 tracks on the original album, including "Those Were The Days", "Lord Of The Reedy River", "Love Is The Sweetest Thing", "The Puppy Song", "Inchworm", "Young Love", "The Game", "Someone To Watch Over Me" and more. Has 3 bonus tracks: "Turn Turn Turn" & two versions of "Those Were The Days". (Folk/Country, Rock) CD

✨✧ PortisheadThird ... CD
Mercury, 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
A decade since their previous effort, and 14 years since their previous masterpiece, Portishead returns with Third – and, oh, what a mindblowing third act. The first thing you'll realize about Third is that it's not Dummy Part 3 – a welcome and surprising trait – but it does take their earlier way with a spooky, brooding and ominous framework to new dimensions. Secondly, there's no obvious single – it's to be taken as a whole. Beth Gibbons's vocals are as soul wrenching as ever, and an overall stark, melancholic beauty connects Portishead '08 to the old stuff, but they go deeper. Some bits are quite minimalist, wringing emotion from a low strum, a distant chime, or a haunting bit of dissonance – other parts are more richly layered and even a bit jarring. Pulp cinematic aura, feedback textured psychedelia, haunting European pop, and traces of field recorded folk flavor the sound – they've dabbled in all of these elements before – but never with this particular feel. The sound of epiphany. How many acts in the pop realm create a whole new style with a classic album, and then pull off something nearly as great almost 15 years later, without ripping themselves off? Add Portishead to that small list. We'll call '08 early, this is the best pop album of the year. Titles include "Silence", "Hunter", "Nylon Smile", "The Rip", "We Carry On", "Deep Water", "Machine Gun", "Small", "Magic Doors", "Threads". (New Grooves, Rock) CD
