Henry ManciniSymphonic Soul ... LP
RCA, 1975. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
One of Henry Mancini's grooviest LPs from the 70s – a mixture of tight large arrangements with a smooth funky edge, similar to some of his best soundtrack work at the time! The rhythm section is great – with Harvey Mason on drums and Joe Sample on keyboards, and guitar by David T Walker and Dennis Budimir – and the album also features some cool solos on instruments like African finger piano and piccolo trumpet. The whole thing bounces along with a majestic approach that's very full and complicated – yet also tight and funky! Lots of nice groovy tunes – and titles include "Sun Goddess", "Symphonic Soul", "Soul Saga", "African Symphony", "Slow Hot Wind", and "Satin Soul". LP, Vinyl record album
(A nice copy.)

✨✧ Soulful StringsBest Of The Soulful Strings ... LP
Cadet, 1973. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
2 LP set compiling some of the greatest tracks by this legendary Chicago studio assemblage led by the great bassist/arranger Richard Evans. The track list is a perfect example of the sound that they did so well, and is more proof that Chicago had one of the most interesting soul scenes in the world. Cuts include "Burning Spear", "Zambezi", "The Stepper", "Soul Prelude", "Groovin", "Listen Here", and lots lots more! (Soul, Now Sound) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousMood Mosaic Vol 3 – The Sexploitation (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Mood Mosaic (Italy), 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An early entry in the classic Mood Mosaic series – a set of compilations that were crucial in helping to bring rare European tracks over to our American ears, especially in a pre-internet world! There's a real 90s sample head vibe to the record – 70s vintage tracks that have just the right sort of beats, basslines, and keyboards to appeal to a later scene – with a set list that includes "Coming and Going" and "Go Down Dying" by Ray Brown, plus "Caribbean Sunrise" by Clay Pitts, "Vixen & The Constable" by Ingo Kantor, "Le Train Fou" by Jacques Denjean, "Amame" and "Dr No Piano" by Claudia Vita, "Good Time" by Dan Seepers Soul, "Pazuzu" by Tony Sylvester, "Continental Exchange" by Sounds Nice, and "Sado Maso" by De Giafferi. ✨✧ Jean Jacques PerreyMoog Indigo ... LP
Vanguard, 1970. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An incredible record of funky moogy grooves – possibly one of the best of the genre! Jean Jacques Perry really outdid himself on this record – going past the simple cut ups of his work with Gershon Kingsley, and hitting a style that was more groovy, and more song oriented. The best example of this is the album's fantastic funky tune "EVA" – a monster break/moog cut that's been sampled by Gang Starr for "Just To Get A Rep", and more than a few other artists over the years! The rest of the record's just as great – and cuts include "Soul City", "18th Century Puppet", "Gossipo Perpetuo", and "Passport To The Future". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Nelson RiddleContemporary Sound Of Nelson Riddle ... LP
United Artists, 1968. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from Riddle – a bandleader who always did great work with other singers, but who could really be sleepy on his own, until the late 60s, when he started to change his groove a lot, and really open up his sound! This album's a perfect example of that move – as it's got organ, electric guitar, and Fender bass mixed with Riddle's already well-arranged horn sextion – creating a lilting groove that really kicks the best tracks along nicely, giving them a slightly funky sound that's similar to the work that Riddle later did for MPS. Titles include "Gentle On My Mind", "Tell Someone You Love Them", "Don't Rain On My Parade", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Where Do I Go", and a great cover of "Light My Fire". LP, Vinyl record album

Al HirtSoul In the Horn ... LP
RCA/Be With (UK), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 39.99 About May 31, 2024
One of Al Hirt's grooviest records – and a set that definitely lives up to the "soul" in the title! The album's always in demand for the excellent sample cut "Harlem Hendoo", but it certainly isn't a one tracker – thanks to composer Paul Griffin and arranger Teacho Wiltshire, as Hirt gets un-characteristically funky on tunes like "Honey Pot", "Mess Around", "Girl", and "Love Ya' Baby". LP, Vinyl record album
