Erykah BaduNew Amerykah Part Two (Return Of The Ankh) (violet vinyl pressing) ... LP
Motown, 2010. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
The second chapter of Erykah Badu's New Amerykah – recorded for the most part, quite incredibly, during the same period and with the same collaborators as the mind-altering, murky and righteous hip hop funk experimentalism that was Part One – some months that must be among the most dizzyingly creative in Badu's career! We're reluctant to call Return Of The The Ankh a lighter listen than its predecessor, but, it's a less dense and outwardly experimental batch in the sonic realm – the emotionalism and the head nodding warmth is at the forefront, yet she's as uncompromising and real as ever. The sound is still innovative, unique and her own on all fronts, but the songs chosen for Part Two are ones you want to approach and embrace from the opening seconds – there's not as much of a tripped out overall vibe and you don't need to acclimate from a distance – these songs pull you right in! Includes collaborations with James Poyser, Shafiq Husayn, Ta'Raach, Karriem Riggins, Madlib and Georgia Anne Muldrow. Includes "20 Feet Tall", "Window Seat", "Agitation", "Turn Me Away (Get Munny)", "Gone Baby, Don't Be Long", "Love", "Out My Mind, Just In Time" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition – on "Shades Of Purple" vinyl!)

Terrace Martin3 Chord Fold ... LP
Empire/P-Vine (Japan), 2013. New Copy 2LP ... $42.99 49.99
The debut album from Terrace Martin, and a set that already has him stretching out and building bridges between scenes and genres – at a level that has continued to make him one of the real giants of the west coast scene! The record's never just about Terrace's keys or saxophone – although his work on both are totally great – and instead, there's an equal presence here from the guests – Robert Glasper on Fender Rhodes, or artists like Kendrick Lamar, Lalah Hathaway, Ty Dolla Sign, Musiq Soulchild, and others on vocals – balancing hip hop and soul with Martin's jazz at the core, as he awakes new ears sounds they never would have discovered otherwise! Titles include "Triangle Ship", "No Wrong No Right", "Over Time", "Watch U Sleep", "Something Else", "You're The One", "I'm For Real", "Gone", and "Motivation". ✨✧ Gregory PorterAll Rise (deluxe edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note, 2020. Used ... Out Of Stock
A heck of a step forward for Gregory Porter – and we're stunned to say that, because he's already had so many great steps forward in his career! Gregory's already been a hell of a singer for years – we've loved him since the very first note he ever recorded – but with a record like this, he continues to rise into the stratosphere of a rare few singers who can transcend both their roots and their genres – with the kind of trans-generational music that will have folks listening to this set for decades – and around the world, in so many different ways! The All Rise in the title is very fitting – as this is definitely a set to lift up the world – with titles that include "Mr Holland", "Concorde", "Dad Gone Thing", "Revival", "Merchants Of Paradise", "Long List Of Troubles", "Everything You Touch Is Gold", "Merry Go Round", "Thank You", and "Phoenix". Deluxe edition features a great book-style package – and the bonus tracks "Real Truth" and "You Can Join My Band". (Vocalists, Neo Soul) CD

✨✧ Ruth KolevaRuth ... LP
Flatline Collective, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful debut from Ruth Koleva – a singer with roots in Bulgaria, but an ability to sing in a really universal style – a crisp take on 21st Century soul music that's bound to make her a real up-and-comer in the global soul underground! The album's got a perfect groove from start to finish – tight live instrumentation that's heavy on Fender Rhodes, served up with a focus that really serves Ruth's wonderful vocals – which have this floating, flowing quality that really matches the keyboards, but has more than enough power to drive home the English language lyrics too. And while we're not sure that Bulgaria's going to be the next hotbed of soul music, we've got great hopes for Ruth herself! Titles include "Falling Back", "Dissonant", "Freak & Fly", "What Am I Supposed To Do", "4AM", "Gone", and "Sista Said No". LP, Vinyl record album

Lewis TaylorStoned Part 2 ... LP
Slow Reality/Be With (UK), 2004. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $34.99 48.99
Wonderful work from one of our favorite soul singers of recent years – the amazing Lewis Taylor, one of the freshest voices in R&B of the past decade! The album's Lewis' second on his own label – and it's even better than the first, with a tightness and sweetness that are instantly infectious. Lewis has dropped some of the experimental moments of earlier albums, and gone for a song structure that's more straightforward and direct – but never commercial or slick – just honest, open and fresh! His vocals have a lightly floating feel that's a bit of a change – set up perfectly next to skipping drums, sweet keyboards, and nice touches on guitar that really pull out some of his jazzier tendencies, and almost create a Shuggie Otis feel at times! Another instant classic from Lewis, filled with great tunes that include "Out Of My Head Is The Way I Feel", "Carried Away", "Keep Right On", "When Will I Ever Learn 2", "Throw Me A Line", "Won't Fade Away", "Keep On Keeping On", and "Positively Beautiful 2". ✨✧ Jose JamesOn & On ... CD
Rainbow Blonde, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
There's a very righteous image on the cover of this album from Jose James – one that evokes a record from Alice Coltrane, which might hide the fact that the album's a tremendous tribute to the music of Erykah Badu! Clearly, Badu's been a huge force in soul music for years, and opened the door to younger generations of singers that would include Jose himself – yet the record's also very much in James' own style, and is hardly a cover of familiar soul classics – as Jose works with a core group of jazz musicians to deliver these lean, warm takes on the tunes that are really mindblowing – thanks in part to contributions from Big Yuki on Fender Rhodes and Hammond, Ebban Dorsey on alto, and Diana Dzhabbar on flute and alto. Ben Williams brings in some round and warm bass – and titles include "Bag Lady", "Green Eyes", The Healer", "Didn't Cha Know", "On & On", and "Gone Baby Don't Be Long". CD

✨✧ Gregory PorterIssues Of Life – Features & Remixes ... CD
Membran (Germany), 2014. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great companion to all the full length albums from the mighty Gregory Porter – as this special set brings together his side projects, appearances with other artists, and remixes as well! We love Porter's own records – and honestly feel that he's one of the freshest jazz vocal talents to come along in years – but he's also great when working in new formats too, and really brings his a-game to just about any other setting he approaches! Most of the music here is still in the jazz-based style of Porter's other records, but a few tracks are a bit more groove-heavy too – yet never in a way that's disrespectful of the vocals, or Gregory's core contributions. Titles include "About The Children" and "Be My Monster Love" done with David Murray, "Moanin (radio)" with Paul Zauner's Blue Brass, "Issues Of Life", "She's Gone", and "Just In Time" with Zbonics, "Song Of The Wind" by M1/Brian Jackson – plus remixes that include "1960 What (Opolopo kick & bass rerub)" and "She Danced Across The Floor (Automart rmx)". Erykah BaduWorldwide Underground (purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Motown, 2003. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
A nice one from Badu – one with a depth of feeling and genuine soulful vibes that live up to its title, despite the fact that she records for one of the world's biggest media conglomerates! It's all about the vibe here. Erykah rolls her syllables, scats and emotes feelings more than an actual narrative in the strongest of these cuts. It's not that she's forgone lyrics, but it's all about the ambience, not radio sing-a-longs. She also dives head first into her organic soul and hip hop hybrid sound a little more sparingly, but still better than most who that followed her lead post-Baduizm. She channels Donald Byrd on the great "Think Twice", which is pretty indicative of the vibe as a whole. The groove is sorta mellow, but in a very tripped-out way, with deep organ washes and synth tones, scratchy soul guitar, and crisp organic beats. There's an appearance by Dead Prez on "Steady On The Grind", and a really sweet old school flavored remake of the great "Love Of My Life" track from the Brown Sugar soundtrack with Queen Latifah and Bahamadia, but for the most part Erykah is sweating soul on her own spiritual plane here. It's gonna take a little while to sink in, but this may be her best album (despite whatever naysaying BS you may read in mainstream reviews.) Tracks include "Bump It", the great single "Danger", "Woo", "Back In The Day" and "I Want You". LP, Vinyl record album

SweetbackSweetback ... LP
Epic, 1996. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $25.99 26.98
One of those records that kind of snuck under the radar at the time – but which has gone onto become a crucial part of soul music from the 90s, and a record that's one of the blueprints for the neo soul generation to come! Sweetback are a trio of musicians who provided important backing for Sade – the kind of warm, classic-styled soul grooves that made her a standout right from the start – and which also inspired a whole generation of musicians to leave behind some of the more electronic modes they were using in the 80s. The set really marks a shift back towards warmer, jazzier, more human sounds of soul music in the 90s – and in addition to great instrumentation by the core trio, the set also features some early vocals from Amel Larrieux, plus work from Maxwell too. Titles include "You Will Rise", "Au Naturel", "Walk Of Ju", "Softly Softly", and "Sensations". LP, Vinyl record album
