A great issue of this really cool publication – a book-styled journal that's filled with text and photos testifying a real love of records! The format is a bit like the Dust & Grooves book from years back – in that the magazine features interviews with folks amidst their records – but the scope is also wider, too – as the contents offer up conversations with creative people, and the way that the records influence their own work. There's loads of full color photos throughout – photos of record collections, the people who own them, and other related material – and this issue features connections and conversations with Sadar Bahar, Louise Chen, John Gomez, Apiento, Regularfantasy, Lauer, Beatrice Dillon, Public Possession, River Yarra, Anthony Naples and others. 227 pages – full color throughout! Maggot Brain has only been around for a handful of issues – but during that time, the publication has evolved tremendously – and become one of our go-to sources for digging into a really wide range of music! This time around, the cover feature spotlights a set of never-seen photos of early 90s indie rock – but there's plenty more on Archie Shepp, Camille Roy, ELO, Endless Boogie, Guerilla Girls, and the duo of Will Sergeant & Bobby Gillespie – all presented with the mixture of strong writing and art! A very cool double-sized issue of Roctober – long-overdue, as we haven't heard from them in a bit – but well worth the wait, as the range of features and mix of material continues to be stunning – a great reminder that, decades back, this magazine was exploring this territory long before newer publications like Maggot Brain and some of its contemporaries! There's way too much to mention in great detail – but we can tell you you'll find interviews with Mavis Staples, Mike Love, Air Supply, Wanda Jackson, Sarah Dash, and Prince – and that's just in the first few pages. Other features include articles on Yoko Ono, Muzak, Kid Stuff Records, Mick Clintrock, obscure Weird Al songs, rare Maison Soul singles, the secret Sex History Of The Cabbage Patch Kids, Roky Erikson, Question Mark, and a host of reviews, obits, and lots lots more! A jam-packed issue of this mighty great magazine – one that not only features a big article on Carla Bley, pictured on the cover – but also more on reedman Azar Lawrence, pianist Nduduzo Makhathini, and improvising cellist Abdul Wadud! There's also more on John Zorn's Naked City, Amirtah Kidambi, Ruth Goller, Mette Henriette, and Francois Jeanneau – plus a look at the great spiritual jazz label Gondwana Records, and photos from the We Jazz Festival in 2023! As always, the writing is great, the photos superb, and the large publication is more like a book or journal than a magazine – kind of the Wax Poetics for those who dig jazz! Magazine

A really fantastic issue of this seminal jazz publication – one that has a great cover feature on our hometown hero, drummer Makaya McCraven! As usual with We Jazz, the whole package is as great as the cover – page after squarebound page of great photographs and images, almost more of a book than a magazine – with more features that include a rare interview with Sonny Rollins done by Ashley Khan, a new column by Mats Gustafsson, and more articles on Eric Dolphy, Adolphe Sax, Amina Claudine Myers, and Ronald Snijders – plus more on Bength Frippe Nordstrom, Rosanna & Zelia, the We Jazz Festival, and the Jazz Room Record label – all with great photos too. There's a nice section of record reviews too – and a photo essay on the new Puristamo record pressing plant in Helsinki at the end! Magazine

The great Maggot Brain keeps on growing and growing – really reaching mind-expanding territory this special seventh issue, at a level that goes far beyond the large features on Lou Reed and Loaded pictured on the cover! There's a wealth of different shorter features, mixed with artwork and other articles too – bits on Lee Scratch Perry, Pastor TL Barrett, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Dane Wareham, The Goats, and the late 80s underground noise scene around Detroit – plus an especially strange feature on Doug Henning and his relationship to glam rock in Canada! As always, its less the topics than the way they're handled that makes the magazine so great – and Maggot Brain is definitely one of those publications that really rewards a cover-to-cover read – like the old classics Grand Royal, Wax Poetics, or even Motorbooty. There's never been a magazine like this – a publication that seems to cover jazz of the past and the future with equal enthusiasm – and which has a way of making everything come together in a wonderfully vivid way! As with previous issues, the choice of subjects seems very close to our own hearts – as a mix of great writers take on artists who include Petter Eldh, Shabaka Hutchings, Jason Moran, Darius Jones, Sven Wunder, and spiritual reedman Carlos Garnett – while also looking at the Sounds Of Freedom residency, and the cool Hip Holland Hip record as well! Speaking of records, Mats Gustafsson turns in a great entry of his Discaholic column – which is then followed by pages of great reviews of other jazz treasures from the past and present. The whole magazine is done in a book-style format – squarebound, 128 pages, very little ads, and cool color images throughout! Magazine

A beautiful issue of this beautiful magazine – filled with the stories of people and their records, and the other elements of culture that move their lives! As with other volumes, this one is super-hefty – over 200 pages, and as much a magazine with photography as a music publication itself – with loads of shots inside that rival the cover, and which often feature a more close-up look at a record collection. This time round, features are on Alexis Le Tan, Ron Morelli, Eddie Ruscha, Phil Mison, Andee Frost, Kim Ann Foxman, Suso Saiz, Joe Goddard, and others – and there's also a very cool section on rare party invites by Keith Haring! A long-overdue return to form for Roctober – one of our favorite magazines in the 90s and 00s, and a publication that always gave us plenty of bang for our buck! That tradition certainly continues here – as the hefty zine runs for well over 120 pages – stuffed to the gills with the mix of punchy prose and comics that always made it such a standout! This time around, subjects include Linda Gail Lewis, Lady Saw, The Shaggs, Divine, Exuma, Jobraith, Ozone, Nardwuar vs Marc Maron, Will Glover, and Curtom soul legend Holly Maxwell – all with the sort of presentation you won't find anywhere else. Great to have Roctober back – and nice to see someone still invested this strongly in the zine format too! Magazine

A great dip back into the archives of Shindig magazine – with a limited edition that brings back some of the best interviews and features the publication did in years back – all laid out with new graphics, and often re-edited and expanded as well! Shindig often covers both big names and small from the 60s and 70s – but this issue is all heavy-hitters – with coverage on Frank Zappa, The Monkees, The Who, David Bowie, Small Faces, Kinks, Rolling Stones, Donovan, Captain Beefheart, Mott The Hoople, and others – all presented with loads of great photos and images, and no ads at all! The final issue of this wonderful publication, and one that really has them going out with a bang – as they explore the nature of the creative process through conversations with a host of different individuals, somehow linked together in their ongoing pursuit of untapped territory! The issue features articles with poet Eileen Myles, painter Albert Oehlen, dancer Patricia Nicholson Parker, composer Nico Muhly, sound artist Ellen Fullman, bassist Brandon Lopez, percussionist Lesley Mok, and pastry chef Natasha Pickowicz – all with the thoughtful presentation that has made the previous 29 issues so great. We Jazz magazine is a publication that always finds a way to really get close to our heart – and this time around they've got a fantastic cover feature on righteous jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby – an artist we reissued on the Dusty Groove label many years ago! And in addition to Ashby, the issue also has a great article on Don Cherry – plus more on Jimetta Rose, Peter Evans, Asher Gaedze, and Guy Stevens – plus a great entry in the Discaholic series by Mats Gustafsson, a feature on The Return Of The Queer Jazz Scene, and lots more reviews and other columns too! As always, the presentation is great – a book-like style with full color pages throughout, and well worth the price tag! Magazine

A fantastic second issue of this really great jazz publication – one that seems especially tuned to all the things we love and listen to here at Dusty Groove! But maybe don't think of We Jazz as a magazine, as it's more like a book – a square bound, super-heavy publication that's overflowing with top-shelf prose and some really well-chosen images – spread out here with coverage of jazz both classic and contemporary, always in the hipper side of the spectrum! The presentation is beautiful – almost like an art book at times – and the writing really matches the quality of the graphics – with articles on John Coltrane, Moserobie Records, Marshall Allen, Burton Greene, Alan Silva, Irreversible Entanglements, and Emma-Jean Thackray – plus loads of other great short bits too!
