Dos SantosCity Of Mirrors ... CD
International Anthem, 2021. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
The notes on the cover use the term "Latinx Futurist" to refer to the work of Dos Santos – and that may be one of the best ways we've ever heard to describe their really unique blend of modes – served up here with a sound that firmly places the group at the crossroads of some great contemporary currents of music! Instrumentation is a familiar blend of percussion, guitar, and keyboards – but the presentation is nicely unique – as echoes of older Latin styles come into play with more creative elements, all in a small combo mode that's produced to perfection by Elliot Bergman – who did plenty of his own genre-crossing work in the group Nomo over the years. Lead vocals are by Alex Chavez, a really wonderful singer – and titles include "Shot In The Dark", "City Of Mirrors", "Palo Santo", "Jaguar De Rosas", "Lejos De Ti", and "Glorieta". CD

✨✧ VariousDance The Latin – Swingin' Mambos, Soulful Salsa & Funky Rhythms From The Hip Latin Dancefloors Of New York City ... CD
Fania/Jazzman (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The vaults of Fania Records, plumbed by the Jazzman crew – all in a double-strength approach to Latin grooves! The wealth of great music on Fania, Tico, and related labels is well-known to Latin groovers worldwide – but the Jazzman crew have managed to bring a nicely fresh perspective to the labels here – going for cuts that show the labels' appeal to the funky 45 underground, thanks to a healthy dose of soul, jazz, and funk in the mix! Most of these numbers represent the cream of the crop of the New York scene of the late 60s and early 70s – not the mainstream one, but the side that was bubbling under uptown – as influences from Spanish Harlem mixed in nicely with older influences from Cuba and Puerto Rico. CD features 18 tracks in all – most of the numbers that were previously on the expensive 7" box sets that were part of the Fania/Jazzman project – and the set also features all the original notes on each tune too. Titles include "Doug's Room" by Mauricio Smith, "Come An Get It" by Eddie Palmieri & Cal Tjader, "Soana" by Noro Morales, "Hit The Bongo" by Tito Puente, "Geronimo" by Bobby Valentin, "Fever" by La Lupe, "Soul Drummers" by Ray Barretto, "Black Brothers" by Tito Puente, "Mambomongo" by Mongo Santamaria, "Camel Walk" by The Latinaires, "Tighten Up" by Al Escobar, "I Got The Feeling" by Chollo, "Use It Before You Lose It" by Bobby Valentin, and "Never Learned To Dance" by Harvey Averne. ✨✧ VariousCuba Jazz – Jam Sessions & Descargas 1956 to 1961 (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic look at one of the biggest contributions that Cuba ever made to music in the 20th Century – the rise of the jam session and descarga scene in Havana right before the revolution – a moment that saw an already-great style get even better in the hands of a few key musicians! Afro-Cuban sounds were nothing new to that city, but as the 50s moved on, the players on the scene adopted lots of influences from American jazz – and were really opening up in ways that were as open and expressive as they were fiercely collaborative – moving past the idea of a tighter ensemble with a star leader, and instead bringing together smaller groups with soloists that really got lots of space to do their thing – as did the percussionists, who really drive the music here! Most of the tracks feature some sort of vocals, but also have plenty of standout solos too - and the set features a huge amount of tracks by Cachao in his prime, plus lots more by Julio Gutierrez, Walfredo De Los Reyes, Rolando Aquila, Fajaro, Nino Rivera, and Chico O'Farrill – served up here with a total of 55 tracks on 3CDs. ✨✧ Ebirac All Stars & OthersEbirac All Stars ... LP
Ebirac/Numero, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic salsa sounds from Chicago – a city that's never been as well-known for the music as others on the coast – but which was home to the tiny but great Ebirac label – whose work is collected on this set! The package is an imagined compilation of key cuts that were only issued as singles – a format that dominated most of the label – and styles are heavily in the Puerto Rican side of the spectrum, as most of the groups here share that cultural legacy – as well as a few common players as well! Titles include "Donde Estabas" by Tipica Leal 79, "Las Frutas Del Pais" by La Justicia, "Plena Matrimonial Contraversia" by Ebirac All Stars, "A Bailar Son Montuno" by La Solucion, "Ano Nuevo Y Reyes" by Juventud Tipica 78, and "Under The Sun" by Under The Sun Orchestra. LP, Vinyl record album
