Frank Wess —
Wess To Memphis ... LP Enterprise/Stax, Early 70s. Very Good+ Gatefold ...
Out Of Stock
Following in the tracks of another funky flute player, Herbie Mann, Frank Wess heads south, and records an album of tunes that mix his jazzy flute with the hipper funky styles of the early 70s southern studio scene. Despite the title, this one was actually recorded at Muscle Shoals, not Memphis, but it was handled by Don Davis, and has all the best elements of early 70s Stax backing in the mix. Titles include "Catchy", "Wessward Ho", "Cubano Chant", and "Under Hog". LP, Vinyl record album

Freddie Robinson —
Off The Cuff ... LP Enterprise, 1973. Very Good+ ...
Out Of Stock
A great bit of funky guitar work from Freddie Robinson – a player who clearly started out with a bluesy backing, but managed a real super-dope sound by the time of his 70s work for Stax! Part of the sound is that Freddie's using a hollow-body electric – giving him a style that's a bit like Little Beaver on the best tracks. Freddie sings a bit on the set, but his guitar play's his strongest suit – and he's backed here by electric piano from Monk Higgins, and keyboards from Joe Sample! Tracks include "Smoking", "Off the Cuff", "Rivers Invitations", "Try It One Time", and "Medicine Man". (Soul, Jazz)LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing! Cover has a small cutout mark, but is otherwise great.)
The White Blinds serve up a heady brew of organ jazz here – a lean combo with tight drums, riffing guitar, and plenty of sweet lines on the Hammond organ – all captured at a level that's somewhere between Prestige Records soul jazz of the mid 60s, and Booker T & The MGs on Stax! Tunes are tight, and there's a mix of funky currents happening in the rhythms from track to track – a shift in groove style that keeps things fresh throughout, but never in a way that sounds confused or mixed up – as the rock-solid instrumentation of the trio is very unified throughout! All tunes are originals by the group – and titles include "Night Walk", "Bay To LA", "Tail Feather", "Struttin", "So Pretty", "Miss Roberta", "On The Clock", and "Shakey Leg". (Deep Funk, Jazz)LP, Vinyl record album
