Dana KaproffDana Kaproff (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Mad About Records (Portugal), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 36.99
An album that's got all sorts of wonderful jazzy goodness going on – not just all sorts of great keyboard work from the leader Dana Kaproff, but also a full ensemble feel that really helps the whole thing soar! The approach is 70s jazz funk, of mid-decade mode – and the tunes are a blend of CTI-styled tunes with others that have a richer color palette that maybe invokes electric jazzy soundtrack work of the period too – all blended together with a top-shelf sound for such an obscure indie release! Rocky Davis plays additional Fender Rhodes on the record, and most of the other players are equally obscure – as is Dana Kaproff himself – but that doesn't stop the whole thing from being a sweet electric gem, with titles that include "Piranha", "Brownstones", "Mariposa", "Sandcastle", "Snowdrift", and "Aviary". ✨✧ Maya (Aleksander Sever/Omer Govreen/Floris Kappeyne/Wouter Kuhne)Maya ... LP
JMI, 2022. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A quartet session that mixes vibes and piano – the former from Aleksander Sever, the latter from Floris Kappeyne – but in a way that's nicely different from any sort of historical precedents – such as work from the MJQ or George Shearing, and maybe even more recent recordings from duos like Joe Locke and Kenny Barron! There's a round sort of warmth going on here – a flow that's maybe directed first by piano, then followed by the vibes – and driven equally by the richness of the rhythm work of Omer Govreen on bass and Wouter Kuhne on drums, both players who give the record a dynamic energy that's a really nice change from some of the colder, gentler efforts that might feature vibes and piano. As with other albums on the JMI label, the recording quality really brings out a great deal of color in the performance – on titles that include "Tired", "Trust", "God's Word", "Maya", "Heal", "Fragility", and "Inwoods". Karin KrogBy Myself (SHMCD pressing) ... CD
Philips/Universal (Japan), 1964. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
Tremendous early work from Karin Krog – a great example of her rich vocal talents and creative energy, recorded well before her more experimental sessions of the 60s! Even at this early date, Karin's got a strong commitment to improvisation and unique phrasing – a style that really transforms all the tunes in the set, and marks them as her own through inventive performance with the trio of Egil Kapstad on piano, Kurt Lindgren on bass, and Jon Christensen on drums. Krog's voice is amazing – icy, yet never heartless – and her tones ring out especially beautifully on the modal groover "Karin's Kicks" – but sound great throughout, on other tunes that include "All Blues", "Lover Man", "By Myself", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", and "Mood Indigo". Compost (Germany), 2024. New Copy ... $15.99 18.99
Great spiritual grooves from Web Web – a group who've always had a warm blend of electric and acoustic elements, but who take things further in this second collaboration with Max Herre – who brings in all sorts of keyboards and drum machine bits to the music! The core style is still jazz, with excellent tenor and flute from reedman Tonk Lakatos, whose presence really gives the album a soulful vibe – next to the core leading energy of Roberto Di Gioia, who works on a whole host of instruments – organ, mellotron, trumpet, guitar, piano, and even harp! There's other percussion in the group, warm basslines from Christian Von Kaphengst, and guest performances from a variety of others – including the great Carlos Nino on two tracks – all in a style that's got more of the warmth of Schema Records than the usual Compost sound. Titles include "La Planete Fantastique", "The Source Of All Things", "Perennial Journey", "Olobo", "Artist Unknown", "Look Beyond The Sun", and "Zutuma". CD

✨✧ Noah HowardNoah Howard Quartet To At Judson Hall – Revisited (Noah Howard Quartet/At Judson Hall) ... CD
ESP/Hat Art (Switzerland), 1966. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of rare albums from reedman Noah Howard – back to back in a single set! First up is the Noah Howard Quartet album from 1966 – one of the most obscure albums on the ESP label in the 60s – and a brilliant early chapter in the career of reedman Noah Howard! Howard is maybe best known for his contributions to the European scene from the end of the 60s into the 70s – but here, he's already a stunning giant on the New York scene – blowing alto with a sound that's very much all his own, and which makes his performance here as both a soloist and leader a key part of the early ESP label legacy. The group is piano-less – a unique ensemble with Ric Colbeck on trumpet, Scotty Holt on bass, and Dave Grant on percussion – all unknown players, but great partners for Howard on the record – on titles that include "Henry's Street", "Apotheosis", "Apotheosis Extension I", and "And About Love". At Judson Hall features a brilliant live performance from the young Noah Howard – working here at a level that's very much on the most spiritual side of the ESP label spectrum, and which also shows the new level of inventive group structures that were coming into play on the New York scene at the time! The record's got a sense of soulful structure and individual freedom that's a bit like the classics of Archie Shepp at the time – as Howard blows alto alongside trumpeter Ric Colbeck, an unusual player who was also on his quartet studio session for the label. A young Dave Burrell makes a great appearance on piano, alongside the bass of Sirone, cello of Catherine Norris, and percussion of Bobby Kapp – as the group make their way through two side-long tracks, "This Place Called Earth" and "Homage To Coltrane". ✨✧ AirAir Time ... CD
Nessa, 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the best albums ever by this legendary Chicago trio – a great example of the way that records on the Nessa label can really get to the heart of artists' intentions! The trio of Henry Threadgill on reeds, Fred Hopkins on bass, and Steve McCall on percussion have never sounded better – and have this intimate, soulful interplay that's sometimes missing from other efforts – that special kind of energy that makes the AACM so great when it's really clicking this well – as deeply spiritual as it is freely expressive! Threadgill plays alto, tenor, bass flute, and the compelling hubkaphone – and titles include "I'll Be Right Here Waiting", "No 2", "GvE", "Subtraction", and "Keep Right On Playing Thru The Mirror Over The Water". ✨✧ Ted DanielIn The Beginning ... CD
Altura, 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic 70s material from trumpeter Ted Daniel – a hell of an artist in his own right, and one whose participation in the New York scene is finally given some documentation with releases like this! The set has Daniel working with some of his most important contemporaries, in two different groups – one a lineup that's heavy on saxophone work – from players who include David Murray, Charles Tyler, Arthur Blythe, Hassan Dawkins, Oliver Lake, and Kappu Umezu; the other a group with a slightly different lineup, which still includes Tyler and Dawkins, but also adds in trumpet from Ahmed Abdullah, trombone from Cahrles Stephens, and drums from Steve Reid! Both groups feature guitar from Melvin Smith and percussion from Tatsuya Nakamura – and compositions are by Lake, Blythe, Tyler, and Daniel – but all given that sense of bold, majestic energy that we usually find in Ted's performances of the time. Titles include "Hassan", "Illusions", "Folley", and "Greeting". CD

✨✧ Al HaigAl Haig Today – The Great Piano Of A Piano Great ... CD
Mint/Fresh Sound (Spain), 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great little set from pianist Al Haig – recorded in the 60s, and showing a tremendous growth since his early years! The feel of the set is very different than the Al we knew back in the early 50s – much more lyrical and open-ended, a mixture of blue notes and bossa influences, gently gliding along with superb rhythmic accompaniment from bassist Ed DeHaas and drummer Jim Kappes – neither of whom we know, but both of whom really make the set a memorable one. The record is an overlooked gem from these under-recorded years of Haig – and titles include "Bag's Groove", "Bluesette", "Saudade", "Thrio", "Brother Where Are You", and "The Good Life". CD

✨✧ Kenyon HopkinsHustler (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Kapp/Intrada, 1961. Used ... Out Of Stock
A killer soundtrack from Kenyon Hopkins – a composer we can almost always trust to turn around a killer jazz score! The work is mostly in a jazz ensemble mode – and moves between swinging segments, and sadder ones – those beautifully blue passages that Hopkins did so well in the early 60s – full of emotion, but in a really subtle, mature sort of way that also marked a shift in American cinema too – quite a change from the overblown emotion of a decade before, both in the music and on screen. Players include Phil Woods, Jerome Richardson, and Phil Bodner on reeds, Joe Wilder on trumpet, Jimmy Cleveland on trombone, Hank Jones on piano, and Barry Galbraith on guitar – and titles include "Derby Time", "Dining Out", "Fast Buck", "Small Time Charlie", "The Loser", and "Minnesota Fats". CD features loads of previously unreleased bonus tracks – 20 more titles added to the original album! (Soundtracks, Jazz) CD

✨✧ Abdullah IbrahimWater From An Ancient Well ... LP
Ekapa/Blackhawk, 1986. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A real standout for Dollar Brand – and one of those few records that features him letting loose with a slightly larger jazz group – in this case a septet of American players that features some great horn work by Ricky Ford on tenor, Carlos Ward on alto, Charles Davis on baritone, and Dick Griffin on trombone! As you might expect from the presence of these giants, the set's got a depth that recalls some of the more spiritual sounds of the 70s – such as you'd find on Muse Records, and maybe even on Strata East! The sound is nice and angular – steeped in the Africanist tradition of Ibrahim's earlier work, but coming off even better thanks to the twists and turns of the horns. Titles include "The Mountain", "The Wedding", "Sameeda", and "Mandela". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ NinapintaDowntown Scene ... LP
Decca, 1965. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The Downtown Scene is a plenty groovy one – thanks to heavy percussion from Ninapinta, and some great jazzy backings from Jimmy Wisner! The album's a blend of Latin Soul, Latin jazz, and other mod 60s styles – all wrapped together with Verve-like perfection, with supporting players who include Clark Terry on trumpet, Artie Kaplan on sax and flute, Willie Rodriguez on percussion, and Jimmy Wisner on piano and organ! The tunes are jaunty, jumpy, and plenty darn soulful – all instrumental, and with just the sort of hip sound we're always searching for on records like this, but never find done so well. Many tunes are covers, but they're really transformed – and titles include "Downtown", "Mrs Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter", "1-2-3", "The In Crowd", "Help", "It Ain't Me Babe", and "Hang On Sloopy". ✨✧ William Parker & The Little Huey Creative Music OrRaincoat In The River Vol 1 – ICA Concert ... CD
Eremite, 1991. Used ... Out Of Stock
William Parker's a player who always adds a lot to an improvisation session, but he's also a hell of a composer, and a visionary leader too – able to work in these large concepts and musical ideas that seem to come off better than most similar work by any of his contemporaries! There's a sense of power and vision to this record that recalls some of the most ambitious projects on Soul Note/Black Saint from the start of the 80s – an ability to mix improvisation with richer shades and group movements – as Parker directs a lineup that includes reeds from Rob Brown, Ori Kaplan, Charles Waters, and Darryl Foster – and trombones from Steve Swell and Alex Lodico, trumpet from Roy Campbell and Richard Rodriguez, and a bit of vocals from Leena Conquest. The performance has a majesty that takes us back to the Arkestra at their best – but the poetic power of the music is also all Parker's own as well. Titles include "Meditation For Two Voices", "Raincoat In The River", "Painter's Celebration", "Mountain/Maintain", and "Anast Crossing The Lake Of Light". CD

✨✧ Billy UsseltonBilly Usselton Sextet – Complete Recordings ... CD
Kapp/Jazz City (Spain), 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
Billy Usselton may have one of the least-recognized names in 50s jazz, but he's a heck of a great tenor player – with a sound that's as fresh and modern today as it was decades back! Usselton worked in the bigger Les Brown band during most of the 50s, but here he's heard in some great small combo sides recorded for Kapp – material that's really dominated by Billy's angular approach to tenor sax, but which also features great work on trombone from Bob Burgess and bass clarinet from Abe Aaron. The Usselton sound is a bit hard to describe, but at times it has strong echoes of the Lee Konitz/Warne Marsh approach to saxophone – although with perhaps a bit more warmth. Arrangements by Jerry Fielding, Med Flory, and Paul Moer are playful, but never too much so – and titles include "Cleone", "Jill", "Margot", "Dinah", "Coquette", "Liza", "Blooz", "There Will Never Be Another You", and "I'm From Somewhere". ✨✧ Matt DennisWelcome Matt Dennis ... LP
Jubilee, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A lesser-known set from vocalist Matt Dennis – not as well-remembered as his 50s dates for RCA and Kapp, but still pretty darn great nonetheless! Matt's working here with full backings from Sy Oliver – in a set that showcases his talents more as a singer than a songwriter – but which still manages to include a few great Dennis originals. And despite a cover that looks a bit lurid – with Dennis cornering a model inside a hotel room – the overall feel of the record is quite homey and domestic, with tunes that echo images of hearth and family, but often with the kind of nod and a wink which you might expect from Matt's usual approach to a tune. Titles include "Home", "Welcome Mat", "Back In Your Own Back Yard", "By The Fireside", "A Cup Of Coffe A Sandwich & You", "Let's Put Out The Lights", and "Your Family".
