Two fantastic cuts from one of the greatest Roy Ayers albums ever! "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" is an incredible blend of righteous soul, funk, and jazz – a slow-moving, head-nodding tune that's gone on to have an equally long life as a huge sample and song influence in hip hop! "Lonely Cowboy" is a lesser-remembered tune, but one that's got a great little groove – like finding a lost track on the flipside of a 45! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Four of the best tracks from one of the greatest Roy Ayers albums of all time – and one of the rarest! The record is right in the same vein as Roy's groundbreaking He's Coming LP – a righteous mix of soul jazz, subtle funk, and some of the cosmic wisdom that Roy was spreading among the jazz funk underground – all wrapped up beautifully, but never in a way that's like commercial soul of the time. There's a few instrumental tracks on the album, plus some vocal ones that show that off-beat male/female style that Roy would use more famously in later tracks like "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" or his work with Ramp. Players include Harry Whitaker on electric piano, Edwin Birdsong on organ, Alphonse Mouzon on drums, Jumma Santos on congas – and titles include a version of Nat Adderley's "Hummin", done as "Hummin In The Sun", and very much in the Ramp vein. Heavy funk from the great Roy Porter – one of his most break-heavy tracks ever! "Party Time" has a wicked start that DJs have been digging for years – and the whole tune's this wibbly wobbly funky gem – with sweet Fender Rhodes, this cool chorus, and a skittish groove that never lets up! DJ Spinna does a great job on his own edit – really loving the break, and lifting up the Rhodes in a way that makes the whole thing sound even funkier! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Legendary jumpin' blues/pioneering R&B by Roy Brown & His Mighty Men! Roy Brown is one of the more underappreciated trailblazers of the late 40s/early 50s, and all you need to do is to drop the needle on "Butcher Pete" to hear for yourself how much more his acclaim his legacy deserves. It's a total blast! It's got perfectly raw, thumping bass and drums rhythms, a heavy sax, rolling bit of piano and boisterous vocals. Perfection! 78 RPM, Vinyl record

Two excellent early cuts by Roy C! They both have great songwriting, and a mellow southern-styled vocal that's very nice. In the tradition of his work for Mercury, but much rawer, and nicer. 7-inch, Vinyl record

A rare cut from this great French group – excellent in the original, and mighty nice in the rework! The main version is wonderful – funky and clubby, but with a very jazzy vibe – one that's echoed by the duo singing the lead lyrics in French, and by the keyboard solo that does some mighty nice things in the middle! The re-work on the flipside kicks up the groove a bit more, and stretches out some of the best elements – but still has plenty of room for those great vocals and keys! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Beautiful little southern soul single, recorded by Chips Moman in Atlanta, and issued briefly on Mercury. We don't think Willie ever did a record for the label, which is a real shame, because he's got the kind of sophisticated southern soul style that the label handled so well with Roy C.
