Galt MacDermotMore From The Basement – Unreleased Tracks Vol 2 ... LP
Kilmarnock, 1960s/1970s. New Copy .... $9.99
Funky madness from the mind of Galt MacDermot – the second volume of rare work from his deep deep vaults! Galt's best known to most of the world as the man who wrote the music for Hair, but to us beatheads, the best stuff is his rare work – a wealth of incredible drumbreaks, basslines, piano riffs, and quirky rhythms – recorded for years on his own, finally now getting out to the public! This album's almost better than the first volume – as it's filled with stripped down instrumental cuts that feature plenty of drums (by either Idris Muhammad or Bernard Purdie), electric keyboards, and other instrumentation like flute or guitar. A few cuts have vocals, but even those are nice and funky – and honestly, the album's maybe even better all the way through than most of Galt's classic albums from the old days! Titles include "Ba Ba Black Baby", "Lost Dreams", "Ghetto Suite Medley", "DD 2 03", "Wurly", "Water Fight", and "Cleanly & Pump".

Galt MacDermotShapes Of Rhythm ... LP
Kilmarnock, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $8.99
Nice nice reissue of one of the greatest records to come out of Galt MacDermot's legendary Kilmarnock label! The album's a weird off-kilter batch of jazzy instrumentals, with Galt playing acoustic and electric piano – and with backing by a tight little combo that includes Pretty Purdie on drums, Snag Napoleon Allan on guitar, and Jimmy Lewis on bass. Lewis' bass is especially nice, and he lays out some very phat lines next to Galt's groovy piano solos. The record's not an all-out funk classic, but it's got some wonderfully warm rolling riffs in the typical Galt MacDermot style. Titles include "Coffee Cold", which was sampled by Prince Paul, "The Mouse Roared", "Mbabam", "Marsh Gas", "Alive In Dar Es Salaam", and "Spanish Night".

Galt MacDermotUp From The Basement – Unreleased Tracks Vol 1 ... LP
Kilmarnock, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $9.99
The best funky album you could ever find by Galt MacDermot! Unlike some of Galt's other records, which have a few funky tracks and some other ones that aren't as great, this hand-picked collection is funky all the way through – and every cut's a monster! All the work still has that great offbeat sound that you'd expect from Galt's funky soundtracks –- and the playing is tight and funky, ver much in a classic early 70s jazz funk mode, especially on the drums, which are often handled by Idris Muhammad or Bernard Purdie. And even better, none of these songs have ever been issued before – and even though a few titles might be familiar from other recordings, the versions on this album are completely funky, often more so than the ones you might know! Titles include "There Was There", "Come Away Death", "Rhinocerous Main Theme", "Prison Life", "Love Knows No Season", and a stunning version of "Ripped Open By Metal Explosions".

Dennis Coffey — Hair & Thangs ... LP
Maverick, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A stunner! You'll probably never find this rare first Dennis Coffey album in the original, so you owe it to yourself to snatch up this funky funky reissue of stripped down guitar breakbeat jams! The record has Coffey playing his trademark fuzzy guitar, along with his early group that included the legendary Lyman Woodard on organ and Andrew Davis on drums. As the title implies, some tracks are versions of cuts from Hair – with great Galt MacDermot grooves like "Let The Sunshine In", "Sodomy", and "Aquarius" – plus other excellent covers and originals, like "Hair & Grits", "Hey Jude", "Do Your Thang", "Iceberg's Thang", "It's Your Thang", and "Electric Thang". Clearly, it's a very thang-heavy LP, with all the funkiness that might imply! There's some excellent drum breaks, and more than a boatload full of fuzzy guitar riffs to groove groove groove you away!
