new Cesar Ascarrunz — Cesar 830 ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1975. New Copy .... $12.99
Lost Latin funk from the Bay Area scene of the 70s – and an album that may well blow away better-known work by groups like Malo, Azteca, or El Chicano! The album's near-perfect right from the start – and brings in plenty of New York elements to the groove, thanks to the inclusion of a heady amount of jazz alongside the soul, Latin, and funk elements in the grooves! The legendary Teo Macero produced and arranged – and really takes a lot of care in the studio to focus the overall energy of the tremendous talents on the record – players who include Hadley Caliman on flute and tenor, Steve Marcus on soprano sax, Benny Velarde on timbales, and Francisco Aguabella on congas – plus the trio of Cesar, Mark Levine, and Merl Sanders on keyboards. Most numbers have this really full, flowing groove – jazzy, but with a strong emphasis on the rhythms – and often touched with some great work on guitar that echoes the Santana-inspired sound of the generation, yet never in a rock way at all. Linda Tillery sings vocals on a few numbers, but the main focus is definitely instrumental – and the whole album's great – with cuts that include "See Saw Affair", "Azucar", "Descarga", "The Devil & Montezuma", "Gotta Get Away", and "Bridges".

Joe Cain — Latin Explosion (aka Latin Au Go Go) ... LP
Time, 1962. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
One of the few albums ever issued as a leader by the great Joe Cain – a wonderful Latin arranger with a really mad ear for a groove! Cain's approach is often quite choppy in the rhythms – short, hard, and very very sharp – then topped with sweeter, jazzier lines – played on this set by Clark Terry on trumpet, Jerome Richardson on tenor and flute, and Frank Anderson on piano and some especially nice organ lines! Percussion is super-heavy throughout – played by Jose Mangual, Chocolate, and Marcelino Valdes with a vibe that's just right for the rhythms – and additional support is from Cachao on bass and Herbie Lovelle on drums. The grooves are incredible – quite different than anything else on Mainstream Records at the time, and even different than most of the New York scene – and titles include the amazing "It's A Mad Mad Mad Mambo (parts 1 & 2) (also known elsewhere as "Mambo Au Go Go") – a cut that sounds like some sort of crazy avant garde percussion banging, all made to keep in time to a mambo beat, with jazzy organ solos over the top. Other titles include "Mongo Mongo Baby", "Papa Bajo", "Que Paso", "Tanga Pa Katanga", and "Chunga A Go Go".

Santana — Lotus ... LP
Columbia, 1975. Very Good 3LP Gatefold .... $34.99
A great live Santana set, recorded in Japan in '73 and never released on vinyl in the US! The band here is at their peak, and this set features a nice large lineup that includes Tom Coster, Richard Kermode, Doug Rauch, Armando Peraza, Jose Chepito Areas and Michael Shreve, plus Leon Thomas on vocals! Some tracks show the clear influence of Miles' electric jazz recordings from the same period, while others have a hardcore Latin percussion base, and as you can imagine there's no shortage of full on guitar pyrotechnics and jamming on all the band members' parts. Most of the group's tracks that have entered classic status are here, but the moments that shine the brightest are the lesser known numbers and extended passages where the group really gets into the groove! Includes "A 1 Funk", "Gypsy Queen", "Oye Como Va", "Yours Is The Light", "Batuka", "Xibaba", 'Waiting", "Free Angela", "Samba De Sausalito", "Mantra", "Kyoto", "Incident At Neshabur" and "Toussaint L'Overture".
(Dutch pressing. Cover has some wear, with some splitting on the spine.)

Cortijo — Cortijo Bailable ... CD
Ansonia/Disco Hit, Late 70s. New Copy .... $9.99 12.99 Just Sold Out!
Some hard-cooking salsa from the legendary Cortijo – a set that seems to be from later years, but which has all the sparkle of his classic early work! The horns are nice and tight, and inflected with some of the more modern touches crafted in 70s New York and Puerto Rico – and vocals are sometimes by the group, sometimes by a male lead singer – who really knows how to hit the right sort of soulful vibe for Cortijo's grooves. Titles include "Buenas Noches", "La Mala Gente", "La Pena De Amar", "Acerca El Oido", "Quitate El Zapato", and "Especial De Loiza Aldea".

new El Gran Combo — Bugalus Con El Gran Combo ... LP
Wah Wah (Spain), Late 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $18.99 Out Of Stock
One of our favorite albums ever by El Gran Combo – largely because it's a smoking Latin Soul set! The group were known for a more traditional groove on other records, but here they nicely jump on the younger bandwagon of the time – and step out with a crackling batch of boogaloo numbers that groove with the best of the Fania and Tico scene of the time! The sound is tight, right, and outta site – mostly instrumental with lots of heavy percussion and soaring horns – plus both English and Spanish vocals that really keep the soulful spirit of the session! Tracks include "Clap Your Hands", "Como Tu", "Sabor", "Combolu", "Shake It Baby", "Gran Combo's Boogaloo", "Vas Bien", "Chua Chua Boogaloo", and "Avelino Plumon".
