Jose Feliciano — And The Feeling's Good ... LP
RCA, 1974. Very Good Gatefold .... $14.99
Oh, the feeling here is more than good – as the album's a stunner from the legendary Jose Feliciano, the kind of set that never fails to make us smile when we hear it! Jose's really evolved here from his earliest days – going even farther past the genius of his late 60s work for RCA, and picking up a host of more righteous soul influences in the process – really coming up with a great sound for the 70s! The record is filled with surprising gems – the kind of cuts that will make you go "damn!", and have you digging for other Feliciano records from the same time. Highlights include an excellent remake of Stevie Wonder's "Golden Lady", with loads of jazzy changes – plus the originals "Virgo", "Hard Times In El Barrio", and his classic theme to "Chico and the Man" – a cut that sounds especially great on this album, in ways we never appreciated when watching the show. Other numbers include "Essence Of Love", "Stay With Me", "You're No Good", and "I've Got To Convince Myself".
(Cover has some wear, with a small split on the top seam.)

Perez Prado — Dilo (Ugh!) ... LP
RCA, 1958. Very Good+ .... $6.99
The title says "ugh!" and there's lots of that in this record! Perez plays in that tight hard way that he used on his best 50s recordings, making his trademark grunt of "ugh!" as the songs change rhythms – in a style that the notes describe as "the only vocal baton in music." Titles include "Patricia", "Why Wait", "Cuban Rock", "Lonely", "Bandido", and "Cose Cose Cose".
(Original black label mono pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear, and a small center split on the bottom seam.)

Tito Puente — Quatro – The Definitive Collection (Cuban Carnival/Night Beat/Dance Mania/Revolving Bandstand/Bonus Edition) (5LP set) (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
RCA/Sony, Late 50s. New Copy 5 LPs .... $79.99 109.98
A smoking set of work from Tito Puente – four classic albums, wrapped together in a single package – with a bonus album of rare material too! First up is Cuban Carnival – one of Tito Puente's finest albums for RCA, with a tight hard bunch of cuts that have a Cuban big band sound, and a lot more drive to them than some of Tito's other work for the label. Ray Bryant wrote the great track "Cuban Fantasy", and Tito contributed most of the other tunes on the set – a really unique batch of material that includes "Yambeque", "Elegua Chango", "Que Sera", and "Cha Cha De Pollos". The percussion is nice and hard, and the band grooves in tight ensemble playing throughout! Night Beat is a really jazzy effort that was cut with a top-shelf list of players! The groove's a bit different than some of Tito's other work – but in a good way, and one that has him stretching past straight Latin to mix in a heavy dose of jazz – really getting the most of players who include Eddie Bert on trombone, Gene Quill on saxes, Bernie Glow on trumpet, and Barry Galbraith on guitar. The rhythms are key – and in addition to drums from Jimmy Cobb, the album also features Mongo Santamaria on congas and Willy Correa on bongos – not to mention more percussion from Tito himself! Dance Mania is a burner of a set from Tito Puente – very well titled to suit the energy of the session! The tracks are all highly rhythmic numbers – short, but filled with jazzy horn flourishes and the kind of snapping rhythms that made the Puente group one of the biggest crossover favorites of the 50s. Tunes nicely mix up vocals with some more pronounced jazz soloing – getting a heck of a lot into a relatively small space, and really keeping up the energy of the record overall. Revolving Bandstand is a joint project from Tito Puente and Buddy Morrow – both leaders who recorded some great work for the label in the 50s, sounding great here in a unique variation on their classic sounds! The album has both Morrow and Puente playing back to back – creating a "revolving bandstand" that has both groups playing the same tunes at the same time – a very odd approach, but one that comes off well here – mixing Tito's Latin and Buddy's swing nicely, without too much confusion in the instrumentation. There's some great vibes on a few tracks! Last up is Tito Puente Quatro Bonus Edition – a set that features 13 rare tracks, with singles, outtakes, and more – including "La Virgen De La Macarena", "Moonlight In Vermont", "The Continental (alt take)", "Blue Moon (alt)", "Ran Kan Kan", "Timbal Y Bongo", and many outtakes of "Pa Los Rumberos"! All LPs on 180 gram vinyl – with liner notes too!

Tito Puente — Top Percussion ... LP
RCA, 1958. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
One of the greatest Tito Puente albums from the 50s, and a spare percussion jam session that's right up there with his legendary Puente In Percussion album! The group features Mongo Santamaria, Bill Correa, Julito Collazo, and Enrigue Marti on percussion with Tito – and the only other additional sounds are some occasional vocals, and a pounding bassline. The set's extremely raw, with a very tight groove – and the sound is incredible – easily enough to make this one of Tito's best percussion dates ever! Titles include "Ti Mon Bo", "Elequana", "Bragada", "Alaumba Chemache", "Hot Timbales", and "Four By Two".

RCA, Late 50s. Very Good .... $8.99
RCA compilation featuring work by Esquivel, Perez Prado, Tito Puente, Xavier Cugat, and Russ Garcia. We're not sure if this stuff is exclusive to this album, but it's a great compilation anyway. Tracks include "Tampico" and "Sand In MY Shoes" by Tito Puente, "Night Music Must Fall" and "Oye Negra" by Xavier Cugat, "Guaglione" and "You're Driving Me Crazy" by Perez Prado, "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" and "Adios" by Esquivel, "Carioca" and "Baia" by Russ Garcia, "I've Got The World On A String" and "I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me" by Luis Arcaraz

new Belmonte — Rumba For Moderns ... LP
RCA, 1958. Used .... $34.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic session of jazzy instrumental Rhumba tracks – played with lots of excellent saxophone flourishes, and a tight percussive groove that never gets to soppy. This is one of the best of the RCA Latin sides from the late 50s – and it's a no-nonsense album that features a tight larger group hitting hard Latin material without a lot of fluff. Tracks include "Rhumba Rumbero", "Linda Mejor", "Walter Winchell Rhumba", "Negra Consentida", and "La Mulata Rumbera".
(Mono pressing. Cover is nice on the front – with a bit of aging on the back.)

new Noro Morales — Recordando Los Exitos De Noro Morales ... CD
RCA/BMG, Early 60s. Used .... $12.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great stuff by Noro – featuring his haunting piano lines spun out over spare backing by percussion only, in a manner that you don't always find on his other recordings. A few tracks have larger orchestrations, but they're still pretty darn tight, and have a great hard sound to them. The set's a nice one, and was put out by the Latin branch of RCA in the early 60s. Titles include "Quien Sara", "Piel Canela", "Campanitas De Cristal", "Silencio", and "Serenata Ritmica".
(Out of print.)

new Perez Prado — Prez ... LP
RCA, Late 50s. Used .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Perez Prado's classics, with a side of Latin stuff and a side of jazz stuff – all played by Prado's classic group. Tracks include "Maria Bonita", "Machaca", "Marta", "Fireworks", "Leo's Special", and "Lullaby Of Birdland". Good 50's Mambo, in the same vein as a lot of the other Latin LPs on RCA at the same time.
(Black label Living Stereo pressing. Cover has splits on the top & bottom seams, and some tiny initials in pen.)

new Cortijo — Cortijo Bailable ... CD
Ansonia/Disco Hit, Late 70s. New Copy .... $9.99 12.99
Some hard-cooking salsa from the legendary Cortijo – a set that seems to be from later years, but which has all the sparkle of his classic early work! The horns are nice and tight, and inflected with some of the more modern touches crafted in 70s New York and Puerto Rico – and vocals are sometimes by the group, sometimes by a male lead singer – who really knows how to hit the right sort of soulful vibe for Cortijo's grooves. Titles include "Buenas Noches", "La Mala Gente", "La Pena De Amar", "Acerca El Oido", "Quitate El Zapato", and "Especial De Loiza Aldea".

Ghetto Brothers — Got This Happy Feeling/Girl From The Mountain ... 7-inch
Truth & Soul, Early 70s. New Copy (pic cover, reissue).... $5.99
Standout cuts from the legendary Power/Fuerza record by The Ghetto Brothers – nicely paired on a Funky 45 by Truth & Soul! "Got This Happy Feeling" is one of their tighter, hard-charging numbers. It's got a straight-up killer guitar groove, feverish Latin Funk drums and percussion – and those charismatic Benky Melendez vocals out front. "Ghetto Brothers power, baby. . .from The Bronx!" The flip is "Girl From The Mountain" – one of the more melodic, psych-styled numbers by the group – and it's also one of their best!
(Comes in great picture sleeve, too – with a photo snapped at the Ghetto Brothers clubhouse, circa 1970!)

Tito Puente — Vaya Puente (limited edition) ... LP
Tico/Fania, 1962. New Copy (reissue).... $13.99 14.98
Another tasty batch of short firey Latin tracks from Tito's immediate post-RCA years! The cuts are a nice mix of mambo jazz numbers and guarachas, with a few cha chas thrown in – and they all have that tight raw sound that made Tito's Tico work so much better than most of his 50s stuff. Here's your chance to hear the master bandleader in action – especially on the cuts "Samba-Roco", "Agua-Nile", "Vaya Puente", "Timbalero", and "Chino". Tough to find on wax!
(Remastered 140 gram vinyl. Numbered limited edition of 1000.)

new Various — Diablos Del Ritmo – The Colombian Melting Pot Part 1 – 1975 to 1985 ... LP
Analog Africa (Germany), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $26.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the deepest digs we've ever seen into the rich array of grooves from Colombia – a double-length page that covers a much wider range of sounds than you might expect! Colombia's unusual amongst Latin American nations, in that it's got kind of a "crossroads" sort of role – a place where other South American sounds come into contact with music from North America, the Caribbean, and even Africa as well – resulting in some mighty heavy styles that are perfectly summed up on this LP! The package is way more than just an armchair look at Colombia – and is heavy on the sorts of funk and offbeat grooves we've come to expect from the Analog Africa label – a key imprint in bringing the sounds of the globe to Anglo groove diggers like us. Rhythm is definitely at the core – as promised in the title – but the package also has plenty of great notes to help us understand the rich cultural history as well. Titles on this first volume of the vinyl include "Calambre" by Conjunto Barbacoa, "Lumbalu" by Calixto Ochoa & Los Papaupas, "Schallcarri" by Grupo Abharca, "El Caterete" by Wganda Kenya, "Enyere Kumbara" by Julian Y Su Combo, "Wasamaye" by Wasamaye Rock Group, "Bajo El Troupillo Guajiro" by Sexteto Manaure, "Pegale A La Nalga" by Fuentes All Stars, "Juipiti" by Grupo Folclorico, and "Shakalode" by Wganda Kenya.
