Volker Kriegel — Tropical Harvest ... CD
MPS (Germany), 1976. New Copy .... $12.99
Sweet soulful fusion from guitarist Volker Kriegel – a player who's definitely tighter here than in his more psychedelic days – but who still has a wonderful sense of sound, space, and timing! The record features some great tones from Volker – sliding along with this slight undercurrent of spaciness, in a lineup that features keyboards from Rainer Brunighaus, trombone from Albert Mangelsdorff, and acoustic guitar, drums, and some mighty nice percussion! Players shift a bit throughout the session, giving the record a nice depth of flavors and colors – really fleshed out in a nice way that goes way beyond the usual fusion outing of the time. Titles include "Bahia Next Year", "Tribut", "Let's Say Windmill", "Saturnalia", "Circus Gambet", "Hallo Albert", and "Sister Matic".

Max Middleton/Robert Ahwai & Dick Morrissey — Another Sleeper/Cape Wrath ... CD
Harvest/Vocalion (UK), 1979. New Copy 2 CDs .... $19.99
Sweet fusion from the end of the 70s – two great Harvest Records albums, packaged together in a single set! Another Sleeper is a killer from keyboardist Max Middleton and guitarist Robert Ahwai – a set that has a tight funky feel on most numbers – very much in the most soulful American styles of the time, with some of the impeccable placement that you'd also find on Japanese soul fusion classics from the 70s! Ahwai's guitar is nice and compressed – never overdone, and a perfect accompaniment for Middletone's keyboards as they slide alongside some nicely tight grooves. Titles include "Snake Hips", "Plane Sailing", "Pacific Mist", "Soliloquy", "Hi Jinx", and "Dance By The Light Of The Moon". Cape Wrath is an album of similar vintage – again with great arrangements by Max Middleton, whose keyboards slide in nicely alongside the lead solos of Dick Morrissey on saxes and Jim Mullen on lead guitar! Rhythms have a nice soulful groove – lots of inspiration from the best America R&B fusion sides of the time – with less of the progressive elements you might have expected in Morrissey a few years before. There's a great CTI/Kudu vibe throughout – and titles include "Cape Wrath", "Bristol Boogie", "Song For Carla", "Soul Eyes", "Night Song", and a cover of Bill Withers' "Lovely Day".

Solution — Solution ... CD
Harvest/Esoteric (UK), 1971. New Copy .... $15.99
A sweet debut set from Solution – a Dutch group who work here in a seriously jazzy blend of keyboards and reeds – almost with a vibe that's like Brian Auger in his post-Trinity years, but sometimes a bit more freewheeling too! The group's got great instrumentation from Tom Barlage on flute, alto, and soprano sax – and Willem Ennes on piano, Fender Rhodes, and organ – both players who soar out beautifully together, and have a way of dancing around each others' instruments as they take off to the skies! Bass is from Peter Van Der Sande, who also sings a bit – although the album's mostly instrumental – and drums are by Hans Waterman. Tracks are nice and long – and include "Koan", "Preview", "Phases", "Trane Steps", and "Circus Circumstances".

Matt Ulery — By A Little Light ... CD
Greenleaf, 2012. New Copy 2CD .... $9.99 14.98
A beautiful little record from Matt Ulery – double-length in size, and even more than double in terms of feeling and depth! Matt's a figure on the Chicago scene – and in a way, his music represents the return to arrangements in the city's recent avant jazz world – yet his music is also even more compellingly concise, and handled with a strong ear towards thoughtful, tuneful compositions that have fluid, expressive feel – hardly outside at all, although always with an edge – and handled with a soundtrack-like sense of color and scene. In a way, there's almost a Kip Hanrahan sort of vibe to the music – especially in the way it goes way past familiar jazz – especially on the few vocals numbers, which feature lyrics sung by the lovely Grazyna Agusick. Other musicians include Ulery on bass, Ben Lewis on piano, Zach Brock on violin, James Davis on trumpet, Matthew Duval on vibes, and Jon Deitmeyer on drums. Titles include "Dark Harvest", "Processional", "By A Little Light", "To Lose Your Mind", "Wilder Years", "Sow The Deep Seeds", and "To The Brim".

Albert Ayler — Live On The Riviera ... CD
1970. New Copy .... $12.99 Around June 25, 2013
A previously unreleased live performance by Albert Ayler – recorded in France in 1970 for the Maeght Foundation, but not the same material that was issued on the better-known Shandar albums! This concert predates those, and is a unique later outing that's strongly in the spirit of some of Ayler's earliest work for ESP – with longer tracks that serve mostly as a vehicle for Albert's own exploratory passages on tenor and soprano sax! The group's a quartet, with Steve Tintweiss on bass, Allen Blairman on drums, and Mary Maria on soprano sax and a bit of voice – but the way the concert's recorded, Ayler's tone is most strongly upfront in the mix, and seems to dominate most numbers. Titles include "Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe", "Birth Of Mirth", "Masonic Inborn", "Oh Love Of Life", "Heart Love", and "Island Harvest".

new Herbie Hancock — Piano (remastered with bonus tracks) ... CD
Sony, 1979. New Copy .... $5.99 6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A rare one from Herbie Hancock – with a very unique sound for the time! The set was recorded in Tokyo, and only issued for the Japanese market – and it features Herbie playing solo acoustic piano, working in a very warm intimate setting that's quite different from his more electric American sides of the time. The sound is great, and surprisingly full – and despite the fact that there's no electronics or other players on the set, Herbie really brings a lot of creativity to the album! Titles include "Blue Otani", "Manhattan Island", "Harvest Time", and "On Green Dolphin Street". CD features 4 bonus alternate takes, too!

new Betty Carter — Round Midnight (Atco) (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Roulette (Japan), Early 60s. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
An interesting early album from Betty Carter – less jazz than some of her later work, but with a bit more of an edge than some of her ABC recordings. The album's got sort of an arranged sophisticated jazz style – in the mode of 60s work by Esther Phillips or Dinah Washington – and Betty handles some wonderful material with a dark edge, like "Two Cigarettes In The Dark", "Nothing More To Look Forward To", "Round Midnight", "I Wonder", "Who What Why Where When", and "The Good Life", all done in a sorrow-drenched style that's incredibly compelling, and a very different side to Betty's career. An album you'll be hard-pressed to find on vinyl – and nicely repacked for CD with 2 bonus cuts: "One Note Samba" and "Shine On Harvest Moon".

new Various — Groovy Indeed! ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 1970s. New Copy .... $34.99 Out Of Stock
Japanese grooves galore – and a great way to dip into these overseas goodies before spending a fortune on full length albums! The collection is wonderful – filled with funky jazz nuggets from the 70s that you'd never hope to find on this side of the Pacific – given that even back in the day, very few Japanese records of this nature ever got exported. Many of the tunes are electric – with at least a bit of guitar, bass, or keyboards – but there's also some brilliant acoustic soloing too, especially the horn parts. Titles include "No More Apple" by Takeo Moriyama, "Movement" by Ryusei Tomoyose, "Great Harvest" by Makoto Terashita, "Jumping Cats" by George Otsuka, "Dawn" by Mabumi Yamaguchi Quartet, "Wolf's Theme" by Seiichi Nakamura, "Soran-Bushi" by Norio Maeda, and "Moki" by Ryojiro Furusawa.
