Harry Arnold — Vol 1 – Big Band – 1964/1965 ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), 1964/1965. New Copy .... $15.99 16.99
Previously unissued material from the great Harry Arnold – excellent mid 60s big band sessions, as creative as they are hard-swinging! Arnold's group here is at the top of its form – working together with a rich array of tones and colors that show the best legacies of 50s modern jazz in the large ensemble idiom – yet with a lean quality that really allows lots of voice from the soloists, too – a lineup that includes Arne Domnerus, Jan Johansson, Lars Farnlov, Bengt-Arne Wallin, and Georg Riedel! Arrangements are by Wallin, Pete Jacques, and others – but it's Arnold who clearly knows how to make the whole thing hold together this well. Titles include "It's In The Bag", "Margie", "Blues For Nathan", "Cheryl", "Tina", "Per Spelman", "You've Got It", "I Knew It I Knew It", and "King Valiant".

Sandro Brugnolini — Overground (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Cinedelic (Italy), 1970. New Copy .... $18.99
Weird instrumental grooves from composer Sandro Brugnolini – played by a small combo that almost has a sound library feel! We know Brugnolini most from his soundtrack work, and this set's got a similar flair for odd sounds and weird rhythms – played here by a group that features organ, two guitars, bass, and drums – plus lots of unusual effects that make the whole thing sound strange and trippy! The music is a weird amalgam of funky jazz and soundtrack modes – familiar at points, but really offbeat at others – with a few key groovers mixed with mellower, more atmospheric numbers. Titles include "Cromaton", "Amofen", "Celluin", "Andrie's Dream", "Roxy", "Simanite", "Brain", and "Cortex".

Stanley Clarke — Time Exposure/Find Out/Hideaway ... CD
Epic/BGO (UK), 1984/1985/1986. New Copy 2CD .... $16.99 22.98
A trio of funky electric albums from Stanley Clarke's mid 80s R&B years – 1984's Time Exposure, ''85's Find Out and '86's Hideaway – in a 2CD set! Time Exposure has a lot of 80s electro funk in the mix, particularly Clarke's impeccable bass lines, which are heavy throughout. Titles include "Play The Bass '10", "Heaven Sent You", "Speedball", "Future Shock" and the great title track. Find Out follows somewhat similar territory, an 80s synth funky set with a few surprising twists – including an electro/funk/old school rap cover of "Born In The USA"! Other tracks include "Find Out", "The Sky's The Limit", "Stereotypica" and "Psychedelic". Hideaway makes a move towards more delicate synth soul for Clarke – who assembles an impressive guest list that includes Stanley Jordan, Herbie Hancock and Stewart Copeland. Titles include a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Overjoyed", plus "My Love, Her Inspiration", "Where Do We Go", "Old Friends" and "When It's Cold Outside".

Kurt Edelhagen — Edehagen Plays Webb (aka Kurt Edelhagen Plays Jim Webb) ... CD
Polydor/Jazzclub (Germany), 1970. New Copy .... $8.99
A very groovy take on the work of Jimmy Webb – a sweet instrumental set from German maestro Kurt Edelhagen – featuring a host of hip jazz players from around the European scene, and some great arrangements by Quincy Jones! The tunes are all hits by Jimmy – but they're redone wonderfully by Quincy – who brings in a slightly more soulful approach overall – one that finds all the best spaces between the notes in Webb's originals, and uses them to create a wonderfully subtle sense of groove. Instrumentation includes trumpets from Jimmy Deuchar and Shake Keane, trombone from Jiggs Whigham, saxes from Karl Drewo and Wilton Gaynair, organ and celeste from Bora Rokovic, and bass from Peter Trunk – plus some added strings – and Quincy gets some help on the arrangements from Tom Scott and JJ Johnson, in ways that aren't entirely clear from the notes. Titles include "Sunshower", "Galveston", "Didn't We", "Up Up & Away", "Where's The Playground Susie", "Wichita Lineman", and "Honey Come Back".

Eddie Fisher — Eddie Fisher & The Next One Hundred Years ... LP
Cadet, 1970. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
Madly tripped out guitar funk – and a real turning point in the career of guitarist Eddie Fisher! Eddie began his career as a straighter guitarist on the St Louis scene – and although his first album for Cadet was a relatively traditional soul-jazz outing, this one's a wild batch of tripped-out guitar licks! The band's a fuzzy psychedelic one – not in a rock-styled way, but more in an early George Clinton kind of mode, with plenty of rumbling bass at the bottom, warm electric piano lines, nicely placed drum beats, and Eddie's fuzzbox guitar snaking and wah wah-ing over the top! Eddie arranged and produced, and the record's a perfect batch of kicked-back stoner funk numbers that go on and on and on and on! Titles include "Land Of Our Father", "Beautiful Things", "East St Louis Blues", "Another Episode", "Either Or", and "Jeremiah Pucket".

Stan Getz Quartet — Jazz In Paris – Stan Getz In Paris ... CD
Universal (France), 1966. New Copy .... $8.99 11.99
A rare set from one of Stan Getz's hippest groups! The album was recorded in Paris in 1966, during a time in which Stan was working with a groundbreaking quartet that included Gary Burton on vibes, Steve Swallow on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – a combo that unfortunately got a bit overshadowed by Stan's bossa work, which was recorded in earlier years, but still getting issued and played heavily during the time of the Burton quartet's reign. The upshot of that situation was that the combo weren't nearly as exposed, or recorded, as much as they should have been – making the CD an essential look at this under-documented side of Stan's career. Getz's tone is fantastic – and he glides freely with the young modernists in a way that you barely ever hear on any of his sides from the 60s, save for, perhaps, the sublime Sweet Rain LP. Titles include the long "The Knight Rides Again" – plus the tracks "Singing Song", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Stan's Blues", "Edelweiss", and "Manha De Carnaval".

Rune Gustafsson — Rune At The Top ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good .... $5.99
A very groovy set of pop-jazz guitar tunes – originally recorded by Metronome Records in Sweden, but issued here by Atlantic. The core of the recording is Gustafsson's guitar trio, but the record also features some larger backing by Georg Riedel that have a nice airy feel to them. While the record isn't totally funky, it's got a nice slightly funky easy sound that's very nice. Includes a good version of "California Soul", plus "Waltz A Nova", "The Look Of Love", "Witchita Lineman", and "Me On The See Saw".
(White label mono pressing. Cover has a promo sticker, some tape on the spine, a bit of pen, and WGN letters in marker on back.)

Chico Hamilton — El Chico ... LP
Impulse, 1965. Very Good- Gatefold .... $14.99
Amazing, simply amazing – and light years ahead of the staid sounds that Chico Hamilton was cutting in the 50s! Hamilton's one of those players who has an amazing range to his music – almost all of it really incredible, as Chico always shifts things up over time – continually trying new things, and new modes of expression – even though, given his popularity, he could have just kept recording the same things year after year. This album is true testament to that propensity for growth in Hamilton's music – a wonderfully unbridled set that's filled with unusual rhythms, odd instrumentation, and even some of the first touches of psychedelic jazz to appear in the 60s! Players include Sadao Watanabe on alto and flute, Gabor Szabo on guitar, Jimmy Cheatham on trombone, and Willie Bobo and Victor Pantoja on percussion – all working together in a really wonderful range of modes from track to track – always groovy, but also pretty far-reaching and exploratory too! Titles include "El Moors", "Helena", "Strange", "Marcheta", "El Chico", and "Conquistadores".
(Orange & black label mono pressing, with Van Gelder stamp. Cover has some edge wear, staining along the top, and some pen on the back.)

Hu Vibrational — Beautiful ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 2004. Used .... $6.99
Hu Vibrational brings a pounding instrumental mix of percussion, electronic beats, and African-inspired jazz! The loose group feature multi-instrumentalist Adam Rudolph (who has played with Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Hancock and Don Cherry to name a few) on all types of acoustic drums, shakers, bamboo flutes and well beyond, avant garde drummer Hamid Drake on the trap and more, plus experimental beat makers/left field hip hop figures like Daedelus and Carlos Nino/Ammon Contact. What's really nice about this album is how well it coalesces throughout – the crew really finds a hypnotic groove all the way through, and it's not at all the disconnected mess that lesser figures in the experimental community often come up with! A tight, inventive surprise from the ever reliable Soul Jazz label. Tracks include "Joyous", "We Walk", "Friends And Gardens", "Locomotion", "Feet On A Beautiful Planet", "Walkabout It", "In The Here", "Sunkissed", "Return To Earth" and more.

JJ Band (El Chicles & Chakachas) — JJ Band ... CD
Polydor/Sonorama (Germany), 1970. New Copy .... $18.99
Incredible funk, soul, jazz, post psychedelia and funk rock from the JJ Band – recorded in Brussels and featuring core players who were also integral members of Chakachas & El Chicles! The JJ Band find a hard grooving style steeped in horns, with heavy drums, bass and percussion, fuzzy guitar, and group vocals that range from psych styled group singing and soaring, kind of blue eyed soul. It's a mix of originals and tripped out cover tunes – ranging from walloping funk and funk rock, to some more laidback styles, but most of the tunes have pretty punchy sound. Totally great, and all to rare stuff! Titles include "Love In Them There Hills", "Now I've Found Out", "Leaving You", a fantastic, brass funk & psych jazz take on "Norwegian Wood", "Bip Bip", "To Love Somebody" and more. Also includes 2 bonus tracks recorded earlier and not on the original Polydor version, which was only released in Belgium and Canada: "Cousins Jack" and "Nicky's At The PC".

Psychedelic jazz & funky numbers from Volker Kriegel – a compilation of grooves from his MPS albums of the early-to-mid 70s! Funky electric and fuzzed out jazz from albums such as Lift!, Octember Variations, Spectrum and Elastic Menu – was well as choice selections from records by The Dave Pike Set – of which Volker was an integral member and perhaps best remembered for! Titles include "Spiral Crackers", "Lift!", "Circus Gambert", "Let's Say Windmill", "Suspicious Child", "Mather", "The Secret Mystery of Hensh", "Mild Maniac" and more.

Volker Kriegel — Tropical Harvest ... CD
MPS (Germany), 1976. New Copy .... $12.99
Sweet soulful fusion from guitarist Volker Kriegel – a player who's definitely tighter here than in his more psychedelic days – but who still has a wonderful sense of sound, space, and timing! The record features some great tones from Volker – sliding along with this slight undercurrent of spaciness, in a lineup that features keyboards from Rainer Brunighaus, trombone from Albert Mangelsdorff, and acoustic guitar, drums, and some mighty nice percussion! Players shift a bit throughout the session, giving the record a nice depth of flavors and colors – really fleshed out in a nice way that goes way beyond the usual fusion outing of the time. Titles include "Bahia Next Year", "Tribut", "Let's Say Windmill", "Saturnalia", "Circus Gambet", "Hallo Albert", and "Sister Matic".

Rolf & Joachim Kuhn — Bloody Rockers ... LP
BYG/Wah Wah (Spain), 1969. New Copy (reissue).... $28.99
A really tripped-out set from the early years of Rolf & Joachim Kuhn – a psychedelic mix of jazz and electronics – recorded in a style that's like some of the most out-there MPS albums of the time! The set's got some great MPS-like touches too – including heavy Hammond, funky drums, and lots of cool sound effects and processing – which makes the clarinet and piano sound way different than we've heard on any other Kuhn brothers album! There's some great help on the record too – Stu Martin on drums, Volker Kriegel on guitar, and even an appearance from Gunter Lenz – on titles that include "Funny Bird", "Circus Life", "To Our Father", "Bloody Rockers", "El Dorado", and "Crazy Lusly".

Steve Marcus — Tomorrow Never Knows ... CD
Vortex (Japan), 1968. New Copy .... $15.99
The first album ever by Steve Marcus – a key player trying to mix rock and jazz at the end of the 60s! Marcus plays some really wild sax on the set – a bit of soprano and tenor, mixed with guitar and electric keys in a wonderfully fuzzy sound! The approach has lots of funk in the mix – thanks to drums from Bob Moses – and the whole set's got that really nice trippy psychedelic jazz feel that was used a lot on titles (like this one) done for Herbie Mann's hip Vortex records label! Years ahead of its time, with a sound that's only being appreciated fully today – and featuring some great jazz versions of psyche rock classics – like "Mellow Yellow", "Eight Miles High", "Rain", and "Tomorrow Never Knows" – all taken to electric jamming versions that work off of a modal groove and a Coltrane-esque approach to soloing! Also features a nice version of Gary Burton's "Half A Heart", which is one of the funkiest tunes on the record, and done with some cool electric Harpsichord!

Charlie Mariano — Mirror ... CD
Atlantic (Japan), 1972. New Copy .... $15.99
A seminal electric session from Charlie Mariano – one recorded after his shift from bop-based work into trippier, more psychedelic influences – and one of his few American dates from the time! The record has Charlie working on soprano and alto sax, with a group that includes Pat Rebillot on electric piano and organ, Tony Levine on bass, and David Spinozza on guitar – all grooving along with the reeds in a stretched-out, tripped-out kind of way – a mixture of jazz and some Eastern influences, but always held together nicely – without some of the overindulgence of some other Mariano records from the period. Charlie's solos are still icy as ever, but much freer than on his classic work, and with definite post-Coltrane influences – and titles include "Madras", "Himalaya", "Vasi Bindu", and "Mirror", which has vocals by Asha Pulthi!

new Lee Morgan — Sixth Sense ... LP
Blue Note, 1967. Very Good .... $14.99
Beautiful late work from Lee Morgan! The last five years of Lee's life saw him really stretching out to do some fantastic writing, playing, and leading – and this record stands today as one of the best examples of that period – a pure act of genius, with a sound that really takes off from Lee's earlier Blue Note albums. The styles are a unique blend of soulful hardbop and the more stretched-out spiritualism that would later emerge in the early 70s soul jazz scene – and players include the lesser-known Frank Mitchell on tenor, plus Jackie McLean on alto, Cedar Walton on piano, Victor Sproles on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – the last of whom provides an amazingly lyrical approach to rhythm, the sort that was key to some of Lee Morgan's best work of the time! Titles include "Afreaka", "Short Count", "The Cry Of My People", "Anti Climax", and "Psychedelic".

Takeru Muraoka & Takao Uematsu — Ride & Tie (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Express/Think (Japan), 1971. New Copy .... $34.99
Funky, fuzzy, and outta site – a really wonderful set of extended psychedelic jazz numbers from twin tenorists Takeru Muraoka and Takao Uematsu! The set's billed as a live tenor "battle" on the cover – but it's hardly the sort of record that you'd hear from American players in this mode – no bebop jams, and instead some great soul and funk-influenced lines on the horns, served up over rhythm from a trio that features electric piano, electric bass, and drums from the mighty Motohiko Hino! There's a nice degree of fuzz on the saxes at times (are they using some effects pedals?) – and the long tunes really open up with a wicked groove that feels like some lost US jazz funk album from the early 70s. Titles include "Happy Birth", "Listen Here", "Hot Sunday", and "CC Rider".

Mustang — Organ Freakout – A Happening With The Mustang ... LP
Somerset, Late 60s. Very Good .... $11.99
A great little album – even if it tries to promise too much! The set bills itself as "the swinginest Hammond organ album since the birth of psychedelia" – and while that sort of a claim is so high that nobody could ever match it, the album is a great batch of offbeat soul instrumentals – recorded in kind of a tripped-out take on the Memphis groove! We're not sure who the mysterious "Mustang" is (although it could be Paul Griffin, who also recorded for the same label in a similar mode) – but we're guessing here that the name is also used to convey the fact that many of the tunes have a "Mustang Sally" sort of rhythm. Backing is in a hip small combo mode – with nice go-go drums, tight rhythm guitar, and soulful honking sax behind the organ – and although the sound is more straight soul instrumentals, the titles are nicely tripped-out – and include "The Acid Test", "California Time", "Joshua Got Busted", "Haight Ashbury Time", "Swing Low Sweet Truth", and "Golden Gate Freakout".
(Cover has light wear and split top and spine.)

Carlos Nino & Friends — Aquariusssssss (with bonus track) ... CD
Porter, 2012. Used .... $4.99
Carlos Nino builds near-orchestral grandeur out of samples, loops, acoustic strings, voice and nature sounds – with assistance from fellow Build An Ark sailors and other guests – breezy, laidback and engaging all the way! The album is constructed from recordings Carlos made of himself and the guests, free flowing mood music that takes flight with nature sounds – crashing waves and more. The musicians in his circle are incredible, and while the music is ambient at times, it's also got a dexterous sweep that's mighty nice too! Players include Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Jesse Peterson, Dntel, and Daedelus – and titles include "Mezame (Awakening)", "Sailing In Concentric Circles", "Bath Of Breath Crystal Crescendo", "Listening To The Conversation Of The Birds", "Trance Elation Of Transformance", and "Tears Of Transcendence". CD features the bonus track "Sparkling Arch Of Existence".

Dave Pike — Doors of Perception ... CD
Vortex (Japan), 1970. New Copy .... $15.99
Groovily tripped-out work from vibist Dave Pike – and one of the few American albums that matches the experimental sound of his work for MPS! The session's often quite free and open – in a way that not only uses odd instrumental combinations and arrangements, but which also features some offbeat production by Herbie Mann that further abstracts the sound! Elements of Pike's earlier work shine through in a few of the more straightforward groovers, but his new European-endowed sense of hipness wins in the end – thanks to a good deal of modal grooves, psychedelic elements, and even a bit of fuzzy Fender bass! Other players include Lee Konitz on alto sax, Don Friedman on piano, Chuck Israel on bass (electric and acoustic), and Eddie Daniels on tenor and clarinet – and titles include "Free Improvisation", "The Drifter", "Ballad", "The Doors Of Perception", and "Anticipation".

Dave Pike Set — Four Reasons ... CD
MPS (Germany), 1970. New Copy .... $13.99
Funky, fantastic, and nicely tripped-out – one of the legendary MPS classics by the Dave Pike Set of the late 60s – a combo that did a great job of mixing Dave's vibes with some headier sounds and psychedelic elements! There's a warmth here that's missing from some of the other Pike dates for MPS – wonderful tones that really show Dave growing a lot as an artist, and settling into a beautiful working relationship with guitarist Volker Kriegel – who also plays some sitar and electric bass on the record too! Main bass bits, though, are handled by JA Rettenbacher – who's got this bottom sense of flow that's really wonderful – kind of a building swell that works perfectly, no matter what the flavor of the tune – and there's a mighty nice array of flavors on the set. The group's completed by drummer Peter Baumeister, who's no slouch either – and titles include "Greater Kalesh No 48", "Professer Porno's Romance", "Cornflower Girl", "The Seventh Day", and "A Nose Opener".

Dave Pike Set — Noisy Silence – Gentle Noise ... CD
MPS (Germany), 1969. New Copy .... $12.99
Funky vibes, electric sitar, and a madly tripped-out album – one of the best of the MPS psychedelic jazz sessions from the end of the 60s! Back in the US, Dave Pike was always a pretty straight vibist – but he's working here with his European combo that included the legendary Volker Kriegel – who plays both electric guitar and sitar on the record, giving it a really groovy "Eastern" sort of vibe! Drummer Peter Baumeister kicks the bottom of the set mightily – rolling in a modal groove one minute, picking up a heavier funk approach the next – and always inspiring the rest of the group to stretch out in the grooviest way possible. Tracks are shortish, but filled with great sonic touches – and titles include the legendary "Mathar", a well known bit of sitar funk – plus the tracks "Mother People", "I'm On My Way", "Regards From Freddie Horowitz", and "Walkin' Down The Highway In A Red Raw Egg".

Sun Ra — Cosmos ... CD
Inner City, 1977. New Copy .... $10.99 12.95
One of the best-remembered Sun Ra albums from the 70s – a really cool little session that features Ra playing the unusual "rocksichord" all the way through! The instrument's a very weird one – kind of like a messed-up electric piano, with lots of cool broken notes and a weird fuzzed-out tone – one that almost feels like a guitar's being fitted into a keyboard, with almost psychedelic results! Ra's use of the rocksichord gives the album a really eerie, outer spacey sound – one that mixes strongly with more familiar jazz lines from John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on alto and flute, Danny Thompson on baritone, and Ahmed Abdullah on trumpet. Titles include "The Mystery Of Two", "Interstellar Low Ways", "Cosmos", "Moonship Journey", "Neo-Project #2", and "Jazz From An Unknown Planet".

Terje Rypdal — Odyssey – In Studio & In Concert (3CD set – with unreleased tracks) ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1975/1976. New Copy 3CDs .... $24.99 29.98
Two albums from guitarist Terje Rypdal – packaged together in a single set! The first 2CDs comprise the landmark Odyssey album – a great setting for the spacey tones of Terje Rypdal's guitar – a double-length set for ECM that lets Terje stretch out in very spacious splendor! The album features a fair bit of very long tracks, plus a few shorter ones – and Rypdal's working here on string ensemble and soprano sax, plus his usual guitar – with a quintet that includes trombone, organ, bass, and drums. As with many ECM albums of the time, the actual roles of the instruments shift up nicely from traditional modes – especially on the longer, more exploratory tracks. Titles include "Midnite", "Darkness Falls", "Adagio", "Better Off Without You", "Fare Well", and "Over Birkerot". The third CD is maybe even more unique – titled Unfinished Highballs, and featuring previously unreleased live material – recorded in 1976 by Swedish Radio – and featuring a group with Terje on guitars and Brynjulf Blix on keyboards – working with larger backings conducted by Rypdal and George Riedel! There's a sense of power here that you don't always here on other Terje albums of the time – and the punch of the sound hardly feels "unfinished" at all. Titles include "Dawn", "The Golden Eye", "Bright Lights Big City", "Talking Back", and "Dine & Dance To The Music Of The Waves".

Lonnie Smith — Drives ... LP
Blue Note, 1970. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A great little set of grooves by organist Lonnie Smith – and one of his best albums ever! The key to Drives is that it finds Lonnie backed by a totally sympathetic group of musicians – including Ronnie Cuber on baritone, Dave Hubbard on tenor, and the great Joe Dukes on drums – whomping away on the kit with all the dexterity he brought to Jack McDuff's classic recordings of the mid 60s! There's a measured funkiness in spots that's totally killer – with sparer moments that are just as impressive – with great solos by the players. Excellent stuff – including the original "Psychedelic Pi", great covers of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" and "Seven Steps to Heaven", the funky "Twenty Five Miles", plus "Spinning Wheel".

Piero Umiliani with Gato Barbieri — Una Bella Grinta ... CD
CAM/Cinedelic (Italy), 1965. New Copy .... $16.99
An amazing set of modern jazz – penned by Italian film composer Piero Umiliani, but also played by a very hip group headed by a young Gato Barbieri! Although Gato's probably best known for his late 60s appearances on the American scene, and his 70s dates for Impulse and Flying Dutchman – his earlier work in Italy is all pretty darn great, and this set shows the budding modernist to be in very strong company with a lineup that includes Enrico Rava on trumpet and Franco D'Andrea on piano, plus bass and drums. Side one of the record features full orchestrations by Umiliani – still plenty jazzy, with some great horn passages and cool use of vibes. Then side two features Umiliani's music played by the small group with Gato in the lead – a really great mix of modes that make the soundtrack a real standout, both in the Italian jazz and film scenes of the 60s. Titles include "Jazz Alla Vivaldi", "Ballata Della Bassa Padana", "Brass Fugato", "Una Bella Grinta", "Lontananza", "Sequenze Autostrata", "Free Theme", and "Hammond Blues"

new Phil Upchurch — Upchurch ... LP
Cadet, 1969. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
An incredible album from one of the greatest talents on the Chicago soul scene of the late 60s – guitarist Phil Upchurch, a player with an amazing sound! Phil could work in worlds that were equal parts soul and psychedelia – making his guitar a perfect accompaniment for the best Chicago soul of Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway, Minnie Riperton, and other greats of the time. This album's easily one of Phil's best – a mindblowing set of arrangements put together by the groundbreaking producer Charles Stepney – bringing together bits of jazz, rock, soul, and funk – all providing the perfect genre-blending space for Upchurch to solo! Given that there's no singer on the set, Phil's work on guitar is a lot freer than you're used to hearing – in a really great way, one that puts him in a space somewhere between Shuggie Otis and Jimi Hendrix! Brilliant all the way through, with tracks that include "Adam & Charlene", "You Wouldn't You Couldn't Be True", "Crosstown Traffic", "More & More", "Black Gold", "America", and "As You Said".

Various — Jazz Actuel – A Collection Of Avant Garde/Free Jazz/Psychedelia From The BYG/Actuel Catalog Of 1969-1971 (3CD version) ... CD
BYG/Charly (UK), 1969/1970/1971. New Copy 3CD .... $27.99 29.99
A fantastic package that explores the full range of genius on the legendary avant label BYG/Actuel – one of the most important European imprints at the end of the 60s! Actuel was home to some of the best avant garde jazz coming out of Paris in the late 60s and early 70s – an especially important document of the post-68 revolution in European music – at a time when so many American players where showing up in France, and finding great opportunities in the new freedoms of the scene! The package features seminal sides from US avant musicians – like Steve Lacy, Anthony Braxton, Clifford Thornton, Don Cherry, Jimmy Lyons, Archie Shepp, Sonny Sharrock, Sunny Murray, Grachan Moncur III, and The Art Ensemble Of Chicago – and it also features work by European musicians like Claude Delcloo and Jacques Coursil, plus genre-busting work by MEV and Gong as well. The 3CD box features a 48 page book – with lots of great illustrations, and notes from Thurston Moore and Byron Coley – and the set features 26 long tracks in all!

Various — Look Into The Flower – Trip On Psychedelic Grooves With Blue Note ... CD
Blue Note (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy .... $11.99
A bit trippy, but also pretty darn funky – a wonderfully groove-conscious assortment of work from Blue Note and some other EMI-related labels – most of it from the tail end of the 60s and the hip start of the 70s! There's a bit less psychedelia here than you might guess from the title, but that's ok with us – as the track list is wonderful – and features some of the hippest, most mature grooves coming out at the time – a blend of cuts that ranges from righteous soul jazz to the soaring productions of Larry Mizell! Titles include "Howling For Judy" by Jeremy Steig, "Streets Of Calcutta" by Ananda Shankar, "Light My Fire" by John Andrews Tartaglia, "Wind Parade" by Donald Byrd, "Hallelujah I'm Coming Home" by Candido, "Acid Pot Or Pills" by Horace Silver, "Music Is My Sanctuary" by Gary Bartz, "Harlem River Drive" by Bobbi Humphrey, "Cristo Redentor" by Donald Byrd, and "Love For Sale" by Gene Harris. 12 tracks in all!

new Larry Coryell with The Wide Hive Players — Larry Coryell With The Wide Hive Players ... LP
2011. New Copy .... Around May 25, 2013
A really old school jam from guitarist Larry Coryell – one that takes us back to some of the most tripped-out sounds of his early years! Given the cover, you can definitely expect a psychedelic influence to the music – and the group here really helps Larry get back to his roots – finding a sound that's still plenty jazz, but which mixes in some funky and progressive elements too – that genre-stepping quality that really helped Coryell break down a lot of barriers back in the day. Coryell plays both acoustic and electric on the date, and the lineup features some especially nice Fender Rhodes – plus trombone, saxes, bass, and plenty of percussion. Titles include "Torchlight", "Cobalt", "Terco", "The Last Drop", "Return Of Shirtless", "December Blues", "Honey Dijon", and "Dream Scene".

new Sandro Brugnolini — Overground ... LP
Cinedelic (Italy), 1970. New Copy (reissue).... $22.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Titles include "Cromaton", "Amofen", "Celluin", "Andrie's Dream", "Roxy", "Simanite", "Brain", and "Cortex".

new Kurt Edelhagen — Edehagen Plays Webb (aka Kurt Edelhagen Plays Jim Webb) ... CD
Polydor/Jazzclub (Germany), 1970. Used .... $6.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Titles include "Sunshower", "Galveston", "Didn't We", "Up Up & Away", "Where's The Playground Susie", "Wichita Lineman", and "Honey Come Back".

new Michel Edelin — Resurgence ... CD
Rogue Art (France), 2013. New Copy .... $15.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful reeds throughout – a sensitive yet striking mix of flutes and clarinet – the former played by Michel Edelin, the latter by Jacques Di Donato, who also handles a bit of soprano sax as well! The instruments often fold over each other nicely as the tunes begin – fluttering in waves of sound that are pushed forward by the rhythmic intensity of Jean Jacques Avenel on bass and Simon Goubert on drums – but also able to find some quieter, more contemplative space at times too. The album's one of the most lyrical we've ever heard on the Rogue Art label, yet still has that highly creative and independent spirit that we like on the company's other discs too. Titles include "Tristezza Della Diva", "Black Snow", "Witches", "Jet Lag", "Tales Of Seven Lizards", "Bailes De Tango", and "Simon's Bubbles".

new Stan Getz Quartet — Jazz In Paris – Stan Getz In Paris ... CD
Universal (France), 1966. Used .... $7.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Titles include the long "The Knight Rides Again" – plus the tracks "Singing Song", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Stan's Blues", "Edelweiss", and "Manha De Carnaval".

new Sun Ra — Cosmos ... LP
Inner City, 1977. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Titles include "The Mystery Of Two", "Interstellar Low Ways", "Cosmos", "Moonship Journey", "Neo-Project #2", and "Jazz From An Unknown Planet".

new Oscar Rocci Quintet — Jazz Progression (LP sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Flam/Cinedelic (Italy), Mid 60s. New Copy .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A brilliant set with a real 60s modern feel overall – in case you couldn't guess from the hip cover image! The group's got a sound that's definitely in the sharper side of the Italian jazz spectrum – kind of a Basso-Valdambrini groove, but with some bolder tones at times – all handled wonderfully by a quintet that features Oscar Rocchi on piano, Sergio Fanni on trumpet, Hugo Heredia on flute and sax, Giovanni Tommasso on bass, and Gianno Cazzola on drums! The horn parts are especially great – coming together with some nice tension on the heads, the burning out into solos that are filled with soul and feeling – the kind of sparkling energy that makes digging up older Italian sessions like this so great. Titles include "Thema", "Elixir", "Preposition", "Action Up", "Kind Words", "Wafers", "Relax Love", and "Example". CD also features 6 bonus tracks too – "Nigredo", "Gold Fast", "Rubedo", "Solution", "Silver Bop", and "Sulphur".

new Horace Silver — Serenade To A Soul Sister ... LP
Blue Note, 1968. Used Gatefold .... $11.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The quintessential sound of late 60s Horace Silver – on one hand still very much in the Blue Note soul jazz groove that earned him plenty of jukebox single play, but on the other hand really stretching out with a style that's a bit more righteous than before! Horace shows that he can still pen a hit when he wants – and gave the world the tune "Psychedelic Sally" with this set – but he also displays a penchant for more complicated rhythms and freer horn expressions on beautiful tunes like "Kindred Spirits", "Rain Dance", and "Jungle Juice". The group's filled with great players – from tenor work by Stanley Turrentine and Bennie Maupin, trumpet by Charles Tolliver, and drums by a young Billy Cobham!

2 of Gabor Szabo's classic late 60s albums for the Skye label – back to back on 1 CD, making for a tripped-out guitar-driven batch of groovy tunes! Both records have this mod exotica sound that would hardly ever be matched again – and feature Gabor's own lead guitar next to another guitar playing rhythm – making for lots of dreamy interplay between the strings, as the backup group does a nice job of hitting weird rhythms, and keeping the pace fresh and clean throughout! There's lots of modal, bossa, and psychedelic influences running through the sets – both produced by Gary McFarland, in a style that recalls some of his own great Verve and Impulse work of the time. Mike Melvoin plays organ on about half the tracks, making for an even groovier touch – and titles include "Divided City", "Bacchanal", "Sunshine Superman", "Some Velvet Morning", "Dear Prudence", "Stormy", "Walk Away Renee", "Michael From Mountains", "I've Just Seen A Face", and "You Won't See Me".

Tripped out jazz and funk! This great little set features some gems from the late 60s/early 70s years at Atlantic, Warner, and Elektra – and has a focus on tunes that draw more than a bit of influence from the fuzzed-out, long-haired late 60s scene. You're bound to recognize a few of the names on the set – but what you'll really appreciate is the way the tunes come together, grooving hard with a mixture of heavy jazz and trippy elements – staying soulful in most parts, and even hitting a bit of funk at just the right moments! CAM/Cinedelic (Italy), 1963. New Copy (reissue).... $22.99 Out Of Stock
Lady bossa nova – and instrumental bossa as well – an early jazz session cut by later soundtrack maestro Gianni Ferrio! The set's got all the sweet grooves you'd expect from a bossa nova date cut in Italy during the 60s – jazzy rhythms, dreamy instrumentation, and just a bit of vocals from singer Marina Moran – who's the "lady" in the title, a singer with just the right gentle touch to match the spirit of the music. Players include Gino Marinacci on flute, Lino Cerveglieri on tenor, Berto Pisano on bass, and Biagio Marullo on trombone – and the work's got a feel that's nicely arranged, but still quite loose – that best extrapolation of Brazilian modes that surfaced in Italy during the 60s. Titles include "Lady Bossa Nova", "Barquinho", "Desafinado", "Linea Del Ecuador", "Samba Do Bom", "Poche Parole", "Ilha De Coral", and "Ao Cair Do Sol".

new Santucci Scoppa — Toward The Peace ... CD
Cinedelic (Italy), 1971. New Copy .... $15.99 Out Of Stock
A killer set from Italian jazz gurus Cicci Santucci & Enzo Scoppa – an early 70s quartet effort that has a more fiery and overall freer sound than other Santucci Scoppa efforts of the era! This is one of those records that challenges our expectations of a combo, or in this case a pair, of artists that we've loved over the years, and their work is never predictable, but this one moves them in a more exciting and improvisational realm that works masterfully. Trumpet player Santucci and tenor sax player Scoppa work with an intuitive harmony together as always, but the vibe is far reaching a frenetic here in away that moves them away from their more hard bop rooted sounds. Many tense moments, but never far out, or compromising the fluid interplay. The quartet on this record includes a pair of Brunos – Tommaso on bass and Biriaco on drums. There's a Titles include "Colpi Di Flash", "Inumanity", "Tensione", "Toward The Peace", "Dalle Nostre Isole", "Routine", "Integration", "Liveri" and "A Free Way Of Life".

new Hu Vibrational — Beautiful ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 2004. New Copy .... $18.99 Out Of Stock
Tracks include "Joyous", "We Walk", "Friends And Gardens", "Locomotion", "Feet On A Beautiful Planet", "Walkabout It", "In The Here", "Sunkissed", "Return To Earth" and more.

new Takeshi Inomata & Sound Limited — Innocent Canon ... CD

Nothing innocent about this record – because the groove is hard and heavy, wild and trippy – a really heady brew of funky jazz and more psychedelic influences – all recorded with some weird sounds in the background too! The album's a great one from Japanese groove pioneer Takeshi Inomata – and it's almost a fusion of earlier 60s funky band jazz with some of the more tripped-out modes of the jazz rock era. Vamping rhythms and full-on organs are undercut by wiggy guitar parts and soaring organ lines – all augmented by spoken Japanese passages, sound effects, and production styles that abstract out some instruments into very unusual modes. There's plenty of soulful and funky moments throughout – and titles include "The Death Of Janis", "Child & I", "Blue", "Alone", and "Go For Nothing".

new Jan Johansson — 8 Bitar/Innertrio ... CD
Heptagon (Sweden), 1961/1962. New Copy .... $18.99 Out Of Stock
Smoking trio recordings from Swedish player Jan Johansson – two of his best albums from the early 60s! 8 Bitar is a real classic – an outing that features Jan on piano, Gunnar Johnson on bass, and Ingvar Callmar on drums – working as an incredibly dynamic trio, able to shift easily between a wide variety of jazz-based modes! Johansson's got a fluid touch on the keys that's simply breathtaking – but also uses a hard left hand at points, too – linking his playing to an older jazz tradition with a few simple flourishes, while also managing to make things swing. At other times, he's lyrical and very open – mixing sensitivity with an edge, in ways that clearly show why he was one of the most respected players on his scene during his all-too-short career. Titles include "Rebus", "Night In Tunisia", "Prisma", "Skobonka", "Bla Vit", and "Willow Weep For Me". Innertrio cooks nicely with a combo that features Georg Riedel on bass and Egil Johansen on drums – both players who match the creative energy of Jan Johansson nicely, especially his ear for unusual timings and sharp changes of tone! Rhythms are plenty playful – almost as if Jan had backing from Joe Morello and Eugene Wright – and titles include "The Chant", "Snalltag", "Innertrio", "Premiar", "Bolles Vaggvisa", and "3 2 1 Go".

new Jan Johansson — Jazz Pa Svenska – Swedish Folk Songs (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Megafon/Heptagon (Sweden), Early 60s. New Copy .... $18.99 Out Of Stock
A real classic from Swedish pianist Jan Johansson – and a key effort to link the modernism of his nation's postwar years with their rich centuries of cultural traditions! The tunes here are mostly from folk sources, but they're recast by Johansson in a moody modern jazz mode – often handled very sparely, with just bass accompaniment from Georg Riedel – who seems wonderfully suited to the project at hand! The melodies are incredibly evocative – and Johansson's playing is really set free amidst these familiar frameworks – never too outside, but deeply exploratory, and with a surprising depth of feeling. Titles include "Visa Fran Utanmyra", "Emigrantvisa", "Gammal Brollopsmarsch", "Brudmarsch Efter Larshoga Jonke", "Leksands Skanklat", and "Visa Fran Jarna". A great live date from this legendary Swedish pianist – recorded just a few years before his all-too-short career came to an end – and featuring Johansson really moving at the height of his powers! The tunes are relatively long, and nicely open-ended – flowing with a modern vibe that almost has some Ahmad Jamal-like qualities at times, which is different than some of Jan's studio records. Of course, this aspect might come from the format of the trio – which features the bass of Georg Riedel and guitar of Rune Gustafsson – the latter of whom is really in great form here, gliding along gracefully with Johansson's piano. The sound is definitely jazz, but there's plenty of influence from the rock side of the spectrum – yet never in a too-jamming rock fusion mode – always with the same sort of soulful, funky feel you'd get on records from the time by Tom Scott. new Piero Umiliani with Gato Barbieri — Una Bella Grinta ... LP
CAM/Cinedelic (Italy), 1965. New Copy (reissue).... $22.99 Out Of Stock
Not just bossa, but some other older jazz modes too – presented by a young Italian combo with plenty of depth and feeling! Most of the instrumentation is acoustic, and although the group goes for a groove at a few points, they're much more concerned with straighter jazz than a dancefloor approach – really making the best of the deep acoustic basslines in the rhythm trio, which brings great life to the tenor and soprano sax of Alessandro Scala and trumpet of Leonardo Carboni.
