new Mario Adnet — From The Heart ... CD
Adventure Music, 2006. Used .... $5.99
Beautiful Brazilian jazz from guitarist Mario Adnet – an artist with a sound that recalls some of our favorite work from the great indie fusion explosion in Brazil during the 80s! Mario plays acoustic guitar in a lightly dancing way that's initiated by bossa, but has stronger ties to the more complicated fusion modes of the post-Hermeto Pascoal years – never too over the top, but with a sense of sophistication and rich colors that make the album incredibly captivating, even in the mellower moments! As in some of Hermeto's most fluid work, there's a blend of soaring rhythms and more angular instrumentation going on here – and Mario's guitar is joined by flutes by Teco Cardoso, electric guitar by Ricardo Silveira, piano by Marcos Nimrichter, trombones by Vittor Santos, and trumpet by Jesse Sadoc – all working in shifting lineups from track to track. Joao Donato plays piano on one title, and a few others feature lightly jazzy vocals – and tracks include "From The Heart", "Ocean Range", "Paulistiana No 1", "Danca Negra", "Northern Landscape", "Music Inside", "Baiambe", and "Salsatlantic".

new Mario Adnet & Jobim Jazz — More Jobim Jazz ... CD
Adventure Music, 2011. Used .... $5.99
A great follow-up to the first Jobim Jazz set from guitarist Mario Adnet – and in many ways, an even better-conceived version of the project! The difference this time around is that Adnet's been working through the concept in a live setting for a few years – and has come up with wonderfully rich arrangements that really push beyond any simple bossa remake sort of vibe – and instead show up the rich, complicated qualities that we've always loved in the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim – especially in the 70s years of his career! Adnet mostly plays acoustic guitar, but other instrumentation is full with horns – usually flutes and saxes that are intertwined beautifully, with a dipping, soaring sort of energy – not unlike some of the best arrangements by Moacir Santos. Titles include "Takatanga", "Mojave", "Boto", "Bonita", "O Homem", "O Barbinha Branca", "Samba De Maria Luiza", and "Deus E O Diablo Na Terra Do Sol".

new Bad Plus — These Are The Vistas ... CD
Sony, 2003. Used .... $3.99
Crackling with excitement – and the future of piano jazz! The Bad Plus are a totally tight trio that explore the realm of acoustic piano with the same depth and imagination that Medeski, Martin, & Wood once brought to the Hammond. The trio are clearly steeped in pop influences from the past 20 years – but manage to play together with the free-thinking complexity and rhythmic conviction of some of the best French and Japanese piano trios of the 70s. The set includes a few great covers that might otherwise sound gimmicky, but which come across amazing well – thanks to the group's depth and level of execution – plus some even better original tunes that we love especially much! Titles include "Big Eater", "Everywhere You Turn", "1972 Bronze Medalist", "Boo Wah", "Flim", "Silence Is The Question", "Heart Of Glass", and "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

Norman Brown — Just Between Us ... CD
Verve, 1992. Used .... $5.99
The first ever album from smoothly soulful jazz guitarist Norman Brown – produced by Norman Connors, and a really nice, tight set that stands up as a shining example of what smooth jazz could and should have been in the early 90s! The tight sound and the crisp, clean production is near perfect – and the performances bring genuine emotion and real soul. Players include Herman Jackson and Ziggy Linsey on keys, Paulinho DaCosta on percussion, Ronnie Laws on soprano sax and Chuck Morris on drums. Titles include "Stormin'", "Just Between Us", "East Meets West", "Love's Holiday", a nice take on the Stevie Wonder classic "Too High", "Something Just For You", "Here To Stay", "Moonlight Tonight", "Sweet Taste" and "Inside".

new John Coltrane — Love Supreme ... CD
Impulse, 1964. Used .... $1.99
A classic – and virtually the blueprint for all spiritual soul jazz recordings of the 70s! John Coltrane's at a perfect point here – balanced between the modal hardbop of earlier years, and the freer soloing of his last few recordings. He links the traditions together with a majestic sense of power and spirituality, twisting and turning his way through a tightly woven suite of tracks that's played to perfection by the quartet of Coltrane on tenor sax, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Movements include "Acknowledgement", "Resolution", "Pursuance", and "Psalm".

new John Coltrane — Side Steps (5CD set) ... CD
Prestige, Late 50s. New Copy 5CD .... $24.99 59.99
John Coltrane made plenty of great music during his late 50s time at the Prestige Records label – some of it under his own name, and a lot more while working with other leaders! This package presents the full recordings from that second half of Coltrane's Prestige performances – material recorded with Coltrane on tenor, under the leadership of Red Garland, Sonny Rollins, Tadd Dameron, Gene Ammons, and others – all packaged together beautifully, in the same sweet style as the Interplay and Fearless Leader box sets! There's a total of 43 long, soulfully-blown tracks on the set – alongside a heavy 72 page booklet that features full session details, a discography, rare photos, and even all the original artwork and notes from the records. Titles include "Two Bass Hit", "Weeja", "Gnid", "Soultrane", "Tenor Madness", "Our Delight", "One By One", "Blue Calypso", "The Real McCoy", "Ammon Joy", "Paul's Pal", "Two Sons", "Filide", "Clifford's Kappa", "Under Paris Skies", "Lazy Mae", "Birk's Works", and "Soul Junction".

Marco Di MarcoMarco Di Marco Quartet In New York ... CD
Arision (UK), 1981. New Copy .... $16.99
Unbelievable – and a record that's one of our favorites by the fantastic Italian jazz pianist! Marco Di Marco is a richly talented player with a keen ear for lyrical beauty and a strong sense of the groove – and here, he's working in quartet formation, in New York, with a group that includes Jack Six on bass, Ronnie Bedford on drums, and Dave Tofani on tenor, soprano sax, and flute. Six's work on bass is really stunning – round, full, soulful, and funky – and Tofani's reed work is equally compelling, with an angular and soulful quality that pushes all the tracks quite strongly. The album's got a killer jazz dance groover called "Camparenda", with some great flute by Tofani, plus a nice bass-heavy groover called "Lazer's Theme" – but the whole album's great, and other tracks include "Theme For Ginerva", "Drops", and "You Caught Me".

Dee Felice Trio — In Heat ... LP
King/Bethlehem, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
A killer album of soul jazz piano instrumentals – produced by James Brown! The Dee Felice Trio were a groovy combo from Cincinnati, and James Brown took a shine to them at some point in the late 60s. They backed James on one record, but their big moment was this album – which had James producing, and the group grooving nicely on some hard piano jammers! The sound's a lot more stripped-down than usual for James, but the groove is very nice! Includes an excellent funky version of "There Was A Time", a great cover of Marcos Valle's "Crickets Sing For Anamaria", and the tracks "Summer In The City", "In Heat", "Both Sides Now", and "Never". Darn hard to find, too!

Robert Glasper — Black Radio Recovered – The Remix EP ... CD
Blue Note, 2012. Used .... $5.99
Sweet remixes from Robert Glasper's Black Radio album – all of them tunes that sound even more soulful than the originals! Given that the core record itself was a bit of a "remix" – Glasper's keyboards, funky beats, and hip contributions from a range of soul singers – the expansion of those sounds works perfectly here – stretching out the wonderful mix of modes through some sweet tracks that still leave plenty of room for Robert's keyboards. The set includes a totally great 9 minute "Dillalude #2", plus "Twice (?uestlove's Twice Baked rmx)", "Afro Blue (9th Wonder's blue light basement rmx with Phonte)", "Black Radio (Pete Rock rmx)", "Consequences Of Jealousy (Georgia Anne Muldrow's sassy geemix)", and "Letter To Hermione (Robert Glasper & Jewels rmx)".

Vinny Golia/Marco Eneidi/Lisa Mezzacappa/Vijay And — Hell-Bent In The Pacific ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 2012. New Copy .... $19.99
A powerful set of free jazz that definitely lives up to its title – a hell-bent session of unbridled energy from this west coast quartet! Vinny Golia contributes some wonderful tenor, soprano sax, sopranino, and bass clarinet to the record – these deft, deep tones that really give the album a heck of a lot of soul – especially on some of the sparer moments, which have the spiritual feel of a 70s loft jazz session. Lisa Mezzacappa's basslines are often a key complement to Golia's reedwork – and the set also features some equally nice alto sax lines from Marco Eneidi, who definitely has the right feel for the record. Vijay Anderson completes the group on drums – and titles include "Lop-Sided Heels & Frayed Shoes", "Meteorites", "Inessential Melancholies", "Pendulum", "Deformities & Dischords", and "Everything Imaginable Can Be Dreamed".

Freddie Hubbard — Body & The Soul ... CD
Impulse, 1963. Used .... $6.99
A real standout in the early career of trumpeter Freddie Hubbard – a very unique session that has him working with some larger arrangements in the background – blowing these magical solos over the top, while still hitting a great edge with the rest of the musicians as well! There's a sound here that's unlike anything else we can think of – including other big band trumpet dates of the time – partly because the set features a fair bit of arrangements by Wayne Shorter – a very rare side of his talents, but one that's equally as soulful as his sublime small group albums of the time. The record has an undeniable depth right from the start – magical, mystical, and very soulful – with a group that includes Eric Dolphy and Wayne Shorter on saxes, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Cedar Walton on piano, and Reggie Workman on bass. Tracks include "Chocolate Shake", "Thermo", "Clarence's Place", and "Aries".

Weber Iago — Piano Masters Series Vol 3 ... CD
Adventure Music, 2012. Used .... $2.99
A soaring set of solo piano from Weber Iago – music that bubbles and flows with a beautifully spontaneous quality – almost in the mode of a lost ECM session from the 70, but with all the warmth we've come to love from the Adventure Music label! The set may well be the best so far in the label's piano masters series – and presents Weber Iago at a level that's wonderfully compelling – spinning out these original tunes that are filled with deft changes and surprising angles, yet which always have a sense of soulful color and personal timing that really keeps things from getting overindulgent. Titles include "Stairway To Us", "It Dawned On Me", "Mirrors", "From I To Z", "Carmela", and "Happiness Is A Choice".

Bob James — One ... LP
CTI, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold .... $11.99
A landmark album – not only for Bob James, but for CTI and the Fender Rhodes as well! This is the album where all the magic starts – the first of many extremely successful albums that Bob recorded during the 70s under his own name, and almost the birthplace of the modern hip hop keyboard sample line! The album's stuffed with great numbers – including a sublime reading of "Feel Like Making Love", and the classic "Nautilus" – a slow, dark, funky tune that's worth the price of the album alone! Other tracks include "Valley Of The Shadows", "Night On Bald Mountain", and "Soulero".

Kenny Kirkland — Kenny Kirkland ... CD
GRP, 1991. Used .... $6.99
One of the sharper-edged sessions on the GRP label at the start of the 90s – a self-titled set from keyboardist Kenny Kirkland, who's mostly working here in a stripped-down acoustic mode! The lineup changes a bit from track to track – and in addition to Kenny on keys, the set also features Jeff Tain Watts on drums, Branford Marsalis on tenor and soprano sax, Charnett Moffet on bass, and Don Alias and Jerry Gonzalez on percussion. Some tracks are quite spare – one number is even just a drum solo by Watts – and there's a slightly modern undercurrent at points, as you might find in Marsalis family music of the same point – nothing that's ever too out, but a slightly dark edge that adds a bit more depth than you might expect. Titles include "Celia", "Chance", "Midnight Silence", "El Rey", "Mr JC", "Criss Cross", "Revelations", and "Ana Maria".

Gianmarco Liguori — Duga-3 – Musical Directions By Gianmarco Liguori ... LP
Sarang Bang (New Zealand), 2011. Near Mint- Gatefold .... $3.99
A great step forward for Gianmarco Liguori – an album that's got a much deeper, more texture-based sound than some of his previous work – almost an experimental ECM mode for the 21st Century! Gianmarco's sound really lives up to the "musical directions" promised on the cover – served up in a heady brew of his own guitars and electronics – with added piano and Fender Rhodes from Murray McNabb, and trumpet and percussion from Kim Paterson – all elements that are used softly, and layered heavily – so that the sounds are often abstracted far from their source – yet still retain all their musicality, and still have a bit of swing as well! Titles include "Indian Milk", "Primitive Nightmare", "Cosmic Protrusion", "Energy Wind", "Path To The Fortress", and "Duga 3".

Wynton Marsalis — Citi Movement ... CD
Columbia, 1993. Used 2CDs .... $6.99
A nice little take on the "city symphony" mode that was big in American music a few decades back – served up by the Wynton Marsalis Septet of the early 90s, with decidedly modern touches! The double-length album's a three-tiered affair – with part one standing out as Wynton's extended "Cityscape" – a tribute to New York, done in styles that range from mellow and contemplative, to more hustling and bustling, in true speed of the city. Next up is another suite of tracks titled "Transatlantic Echoes" – work that's still jazz-based, but with a nod to African roots in some of the percussion and phrasing. Last up is "Some Present Moments Of The Future" – the final suite of the album, and one that almost echoes some of the rootsier modes explored by Wynton in his southern trilogy of a few years before. Players include Wynton on trumpet, Todd Williams on tenor and soprano sax, Wes Anderson on alto, Wycliffe Gordon on trombone, Reginald Veal on bass, Herlin Riley on drums, and Eric Reed on piano – and the album also features some guest tenor from Herb Harris and a bit of piano by Marthaniel Roberts.

new Thelonious Monk — Monk's Dream (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia, 1963. Used .... $5.99
The first Thelonious Monk album for Columbia Records – and one of the best, as well – a beautiful illustration of the way that his shift in labels really set some new fire to his music in the early 60s! The group is Monk's sharp-edged quartet with the amazing Charlie Rouse on tenor, John Ore on bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums – a group that's beautifully understated, but able to do incredible things in the company of the pianist – hanging back to let Thelonious take center stage one minute, then swinging hard together the next. The set includes great renditions of Monk classics that really illustrate his new energy at Columbia – and titles include "Bolivar Blues", "Bye-Ya", and "Monk's Dream" – plus great remakes of "Body & Soul" and "Just A Gigolo". CD features 4 bonus tracks – all alternate takes from the album, 3 of which are previously unissued!

new Stanton Moore — Groove Alchemy ... CD
Telarc, 2010. New Copy Gatefold .... $6.99 18.98
Nice and stripped-down work from drummer Stanton Moore – a set that really does more with less, and allows plenty of focus on Stanton's grooves, and the album's sweet Hammond B3 and piano lines from Robert Walter! Will Bernard completes the trio on guitar, and although you'll still get a fair bit of jamming at times, there's also more of a funky core to the record than you might have gotten from Moore in years back. Titles include "Root Cellar", "Pot Licker", "Pie Eyed Manc", "Squash Blossom", "Aletta", and "Cleanse This House".

Errol Parker — Des Garcons Et Des Filles/Solange/Bluesoscope ... 7-inch
Decca (France), 1968. New Copy (pic cover, reissue).... $9.99
Rare French work from American pianist Errol Parker – 3 cool tunes used as the soundtrack for a film! "Des Garcons Et Des Filles" features a trio led by Parker, who plays some great piano, and also scats vocally with singer Rozaa Wortham – in this cool, catchy way that makes the tune a really mod groover! "Solange" features more great vocals, plus a bit of vibes too – a very French tune with a great 60s soundtrack feel. "Bluesoscope" is straighter piano work, but pretty great – and features Jimmy Woode on bass and Ron Jefferson on drums.

Chris Potter — Underground ... CD
Universal (France), 2006. Used .... $6.99
Deeply textural jazz work from saxophonist Chris Potter – working here in a group with Wayne Krantz on guitar, Craig Taborn on Fender Rhodes, and Nate Smith on drums! The sound's a bit similar to some of the recent Blue Note generation – soulful one minute, modern the next – with lots of sharp angles on some tracks, alongside deeper colors that sort of burn and bubble up from the bottom. Potter's tenor dominates most numbers, even when blown gently – and despite the presence of keyboards and guitars, there's more of an earthy feel to the set than you might expect. Titles include "Big Top", "The Wheel", "Next Best Western", "Nudnik", "Lotus Blossom", "Underground", and "Yesterday".

Roger Raspail — Fanny's Dream ... CD
Marge (France), 1997. New Copy .... $8.99 16.99
A mix of jazzy modes and rootsy percussion – put together on the Paris scene of the 90s, at a time when genres were really getting a lot of chance to cross over in styles! Some tunes are more electric than others, but the instrumentation changes throughout – and makes for a nice set of variety that goes way beyond what we first expected. Players include the great Alain Jean-Marie on piano, Philipe Catan on percussion, Jacky Arconte on guitar, Didier Malherbe on saxes, Lansine Koyate on balafon, and Roger Raspail himself on percussion – on tunes that include "Nostalgie", "Manze Nana", "Fanny's Dream", "Kaki Lembe", "Darbouck Doudouck", "Sanogo", and "Italian Sorrow".

Pharoah Sanders — Message From Home ... CD
Verve, 1996. Used .... $9.99
A later recording from Pharoah, when he was working with Bill Laswell in the mid and late 90s. Laswell's on production, and the lineup features some of his international and funk-based crew like Foday Muso Sosa, Bernie Worrell and Aiyb Deng, plus older collaborators like Michael White, and some of the then young newer scene liek Charnett Moffett. The vibe is definitely of the times, with some heavier elements and hip hop influenced beats, but a few classic spiritual grooves too. 6 numbers in all, including "Our Roots (Began In Afrca)", "Nozipho", "Tomoki", "Ocean Song", "Kumba" and "Country Mile".

new Wayne Shorter — Without A Net ... CD
Blue Note, 2013. Used .... $6.99
A great title for this Wayne Shorter set – given the free flights and soaring lines served up throughout! There's no need for a net, since Wayne's hardly likely to touch the ground – really loose and free right from the start of the album – less driven by the rhythms than pulling them along with his own boundless energy on tenor and soprano sax! But the rhythm players are plenty great, too – and definitely add to the sound of the set – with Danilo Perez on piano, John Patitucci on bass, and Brian Blade on drums – all players with just the right sort of boundless drive to match Shorter's imagination. The whole thing's great, less dark and obtuse than some of Wayne's other work of the past decade or so – and titles include "Orbits", "SS Golden Mean", "Plaza Real", "Flying Down To Rio", and the extended "Pegasus", which features a guest wind quintet!

Bobby Timmons — Easy Does It (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Riverside, 1961. Used .... $16.99
Is Bobby Timmons our all time favorite pianist? Well, if he's not, he's pretty darn near the top of the list! This sweet early side for Riverside finds him in his usual trio format, backed up by an agile rhythm section, Sam Jones and Jimmy Cobb, and serving up the hard swinging, soulful bop we love him for. Eight numbers in all, including three of his own, "Easy Does It", " A Little Busy" and "I Thought About You", a few standards and some modern numbers like "If You Could See Me Now", and "Groovin High".

James Blood Ulmer — Odyssey ... CD
CBS/Sony, 1983. Used .... $22.99
One of our favorite Ulmer records, probably because there's a nice groove running underneath most of the numbers, in a sort of post-Prime Time 80s out-funk sort of way. It never drops into a flat out back beat, but there's always some sense of time, while Ulmer's guitar and Charles Burnham's violin venture to and fro. The group is just a trio, and there's not too much of Blood's vocalizing going on on the eight pieces, which include "Little Red House", "Are you Glad To Be In America", "Election" and "Odyssey".

new Pharez Whitted — For The People ... CD
Origin, 2012. Used .... $5.99
A smoker from this hip Chicago trumpeter – quite possibly his best album to date, and a record that sparkles with original compositions from Whitted! All tracks are by Pharez, and they're warmly presented by a great group that also included Eddie Bayard on tenor and soprano sax, Bobby Broom on guitar, Ron Perrillo on piano and Fender Rhodes, Dennis Carroll on bass, and the kicking Greg Artry on drums – a player whose energy here really snaps into a great groove. The set's a great example of the soulful straighter jazz going on in Chicago – a whole world of music that's often not as exposed to the world as the city's avant scene, but which is equally impressive. Titles include "Sad Eyes", "Freedom Song", "Another Kinda Blues", "Watusi Boogaloo", "If They Could Only See", and "Venture".
(Promo sticker over barcode.)
