Erykah Badu — New Amerykah Part Two (Return Of The Ankh) ... CD
Motown, 2010. New Copy .... $10.99 11.98
The second chapter of Erykah Badu's New Amerykah – recorded for the most part, quite incredibly, during the same period and with the same collaborators as the mind-altering, murky and righteous hip hop funk experimentalism that was Part One – some months that must be among the most dizzyingly creative in Badu's career! We're reluctant to call Return Of The The Ankh a lighter listen than its predecessor, but, it's a less dense and outwardly experimental batch in the sonic realm – the emotionalism and the head nodding warmth is at the forefront, yet she's as uncompromising and real as ever. The sound is still innovative, unique and her own on all fronts, but the songs chosen for Part Two are ones you want to approach and embrace from the opening seconds – there's not as much of a tripped out overall vibe and you don't need to acclimate from a distance – these songs pull you right in! Includes collaborations with James Poyser, Shafiq Husayn, Ta'Raach, Karriem Riggins, Madlib and Georgia Anne Muldrow. Includes "20 Feet Tall", "Window Seat", "Agitation", "Turn Me Away (Get Munny)", "Gone Baby, Don't Be Long", "Love", "Out My Mind, Just In Time" and more.

new Till Bronner — Oceana ... CD
EmArcy, 2006. Used .... $5.99
A beautiful return to straighter jazz playing from German trumpeter Till Bronner – heard here in an album of quiet beauty and really subtle moods – played with a depth that goes beyond some of his smoother soul sets! Bronner's honed his trumpet into one of the most pointed sounds in current mainstream jazz – an instrumental voice that resonated beautifully on the Mark Murphy album that Bronner produced and played on – and which steps out into the lead here in a set of mellower small group numbers that include some great piano and organ from Larry Goldings. 4 tracks feature vocals – Carla Bruni on "In My Secret Life", Madelene Peyroux on "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry", Luciana Souza on "Pra Dizer Adeus", and Till himself on Nick Drake's classic "River Man". Other tracks are instrumentals, and include "Bumpin", "Love Theme From Chinatown", "The Peacocks", and "A Distant Episode".

Mayer Hawthorne — How Do You Do (limited edtion 12 X 7" box set with custom display sheet – plus full instrumentals) ... 7-inch
Universal Republic/Fat Beats, 2011. New Copy 12 x 7 Inches .... $68.99
A 12 X 7" box set version of Mayer Hawthorne's breakout How Do You Do – with each track from the album paired with its own previously unreleased instrumental version – in individual photo sleeves that lay out as a full mosaic! The Mayer Hawthorne story was a strange one from the start – white producer/DJ crafting real-deal, moody, sultry throwback soul under a pseudonym that gets him signed to Stones Throw. The best news, really, is that he's still doing what we loved on the Stones Throw record and singles. Skirting both throwback Motown AND indie soul conventions, but winking ever so slyly at them, making strings sound scratchy, warm and well-worn, subtle horns to sooth and stir, his own vocals layered for a group-like effect. Bonus points for his use of the superstar cameo – he brings Snoop Dogg in to SING, not to serve as an obligatory rhyme cameo. Well played, Mayer Hawthorne! Includes "Get To Know You", "A Long Time", "Can't Stop" with Snoop, "Finally Falling", "Hooked", "You Called Me", "No Strings", "Dreaming", "The Walk" and more. Comes in a heavy duty box – which also includes a custom display sheet that can hold all 12 singles. Beautiful!
(12 X 7" box set version – with each album track backed by the instrumental version on the flipside! Hand-numbered edition of 2013 copies – and likely to disappear quickly!)

Mayer Hawthorne — How Do You Do (plus download) ... LP
Universal Republic, 2011. New Copy Gatefold .... $15.99 17.99
Mayer Hawthorne moves to the majors on How Do You Do – bringing that fun, neo classic bedroom soul sound he did so well on Stones Throw with him – pretty much picking up right where Strange Arrangement left off! The Mayer Hawthorne story was a strange one from the start – white producer/DJ crafting real-deal, moody, sultry throwback soul under a pseudonym that gets him signed to Stones Throw. The best news, really, is that he's still doing what we loved on the Stones Throw LP and singles. Mayer Hawthorne — Strange Arrangement ... CD
Stones Throw, 2009. Used .... $8.99
The full length debut of Mayer Hawthorne for Stones Throw – with both classic Motown and 60s & 70s Detroit indie soul influences, done the right way, and all of it wonderful and true to his heroes – after some promising early singles, we can now say emphatically that Mayer Hawthorne is indeed the real thing! On some of this material, Hawthorne is a one man soul band, with the tunes stripped to a gritty, raw soul essence – and on other tunes he gets some assistance on brass, strings and keys – pulling off a number of modes with equally excellent results. He evokes Curtis Mayfield when he gets the falsetto going, but other touchstone influences are apparent – a couple of the more uptempo tunes sound like they could be late 60s Temptations b-sides. Mayer may look like Dwight Schrute on the cover, but don't be fooled – his love for soul music is true and unironic, and he has the chops to pull it off! Titles include "A Strange Arrangement", "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out", "Maybe So, Maybe No", "Your Easy Lovin' Ain't Pleasin' Nothin'", "I Wish It Would Rain", "Make Her Mine", "One Track Mind", "The Ills", "Shiny & New", "Let Me Know" and "Green Eyed Love".

PPP (Platinum Pied Pipers) — Abundance ... CD
Ubiquity, 2008. Used .... $7.99
A bigger and more uniquely soulful sound for Triple P – aka cosmic DJ production duo Platinum Pied Pipers, rechristened as PPP with the addition of vocalists Coultrain and Karma to the group on the wonderful Abundance! The vocals, and a tighter focus on great songs than on an overall vibe, makes this a huge leap forward for an already excellent crew. Even when it was mainly just the duo of Waajeed and Saadiq, the PPP vibe was eclectic – it still is, but with the vocalists and some grittier instrumentation, they're now tapping a deeper reservoir of soul and funk. Horns, funky drums, handclaps, keys and the male & female vocals reign it in for a tighter approach – still with the soaring cosmic vibe of earlier work. They're also proudly representing a classic Motown, 80s Detroit club grooves, string accented soul and gritty funk – never sounding dated, and very much of the here and now, representative of PPP's timeless approach. Far more than abundant – a bounty! Titles include "Angel", "Smoking Mirrors", "On A Cloud", "Love Affair", "Go, Go, Go", "Ain't No If's Or Maybe's", "Pigeon Hole", "Lovers & Haters", "American Pimp", "Dirty Secrets", "Goodbye" and more. 15 tracks on the CD.

Thing with Neneh Cherry — Cherry Thing ... CD
Smalltown Supersound (Sweden), 2012. New Copy .... $14.99 16.99
A mindblowing collaboration – one that brings the soulful vocals of Nenah Cherry into play with the avant jazz sounds of The Thing – but all in a mode that's unlike anything either artist has recorded before! The mix of talents is no surprise – given that Nenah's dad is Don Cherry, whose own European work helped to set the tone for a generation – and also given that group members Mats Gustafsson, Paal Nilssen Love, and Ingebrigt Haker Flaten all have ears for styles that go way beyond jazz – including a surprisingly great taste for offbeat funk, which really comes to the forefront on this unusual set! Make no mistake, there's still plenty of jazz-based instrumentation – sharp reeds from Mats, heavy drums from Paal, and those magical moody basslines that we love so much from Ingebrigt – but they often get a bit more directed, and are augmented with slight added instrumentation at points – to provide a perfect foil for Cherry's righteous vocals – all with results that easily make the album one of the most unusual soul projects we've heard in years – on a par with equally creative efforts from artists like Meshell Ndegeocello, Erykah Badu, or Georgia Anne Muldrow. Titles include "Cashback", "Dream Baby Dream", "Too Tough To Die", "What Reason Could I Give", "Dirt", "Accordion", and "Sudden Moment".

Thing with Neneh Cherry — Cherry Thing – Remixed ... CD
Smalltown Supersound (Sweden), 2012. New Copy .... $14.99 16.99
A remixed version of the collaboration between Neneh Cherry and The Thing – but a set with a sound so different, it may as well be an additional record from project! The remixes here really take a lot of liberties with the original music – so that the resulting tracks aren't just jazzy numbers with a bit of flourish, and instead sparkle with this really new creative energy – core elements pulled from their roots and relayered in very different ways – with almost more of a focus on Cherry's wonderful vocals overall. Titles include "Accordion" remixed by Hortlax Cobra, "Dream Baby Dream" remixed by Four Tet, "What Reason Could I Give" remixed by Kim Hiorthoy, "Cashback" remixed by Lindstrom & Prins Thomas, "Sudden Moment" remixed by Merzbow, "Dirt" remixed by Kurzman, and "Golden Heart" remixed by Nymph.

new Erykah Badu — Worldwide Underground ... LP
Motown, 2003. New Copy .... $9.99 10.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A nice one from Badu – one with a depth of feeling and genuine soulful vibes that live up to its title, despite the fact that she records for one of the world's biggest media conglomerates! It's all about the vibe here. Erykah rolls her syllables, scats and emotes feelings more than an actual narrative in the strongest of these cuts. It's not that she's forgone lyrics; but it's all about the ambience, not radio sing-a-longs. She also dives head first into her organic soul and hip hop hybrid sound a little more sparingly, but still better than any of the ladies that followed her lead after Baduizm. She channels Donald Byrd on the great "Think Twice", which is pretty indicative of the vibe as a whole. The groove is sorta mellow, but in a very tripped-out way, with deep organ washes and synth tones, scratchy soul guitar, and crisp organic beats. There's an appearance by Dead Prez on "Steady On The Grind", and a really sweet old school flavored remake of the great "Love Of My Life" track from the Brown Sugar soundtrack with Queen Latifah and Bahamadia, but for the most part Erykah is sweating soul on her own spiritual plane here. It's gonna take a little while to sink in, but this may be her best album (despite whatever naysaying BS you may read in mainstream reviews.) Tracks include "Bump It", the great single "Danger", "Woo", "Back In The Day" and "I Want You".

new Amy Winehouse — Back To Black ... LP
Universal, 2006. New Copy .... $14.99 15.98 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible album from Amy Winehouse – even way better than her fantastic debut! Although a contemporary soul album, this one's steeped in tradition – soul styles that run the gamut from Detroit down to Kingston, and which are carried off here with a rougher, sharper-edged sound than before! The instrumentation on here is really mindblowing – almost at a Motown level, with isolated instruments really crackling out from the fuller backings – all set to rhythms that snap and bounce, and are almost a bit funky at times. Credit is definitely due to producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi – but Amy's vocals are really tremendous too – classic, but really personal and fresh! Titles include "Rehab", "Just Friends", "Back To Black", "Love Is A Losing Game", "He Can Only Hold Her", "Some Unholy War", and "Me & Mr Jones".

new Down To The Bone — Main Ingredients ... CD
Trippin' N' Rhythm, 2011. Used .... $6.99 Out Of Stock
A sweet set of funky, jazzy, soulful sounds from Down To The Bone – their best work in years! Main Ingredients grooves on the smoother side of the jazz funk sound, but it's got an immediate, authentic style to it – it may be smooth, but it ain't sleepy! A few tracks feature vocals by Imaani, who we know mostly from her work with Incognito, and she sound's terrific on a trio of tunes here. Soulful keys, funky bass, a great horn section and soul guitar are other integral ingredients here. Includes "Uptown Hustle", "A Change Has Got To Come", "Second Nature", "Watch Me Fly" and "Closer" feat Imaani, "Together We Stand", Cut And Run", "South Side Overdrive" and more.
