Musiq — Aijuswannaseing ... CD
Def Soul, 2000. Used .... $3.99
Classic-styled soul from Musiq Soulchild – his debut set for Def Soul, and the start of a great run of mellow grooves! As you might guess from the compressed wording of the title, the tunes here have a great set of flow – a laidback, kicked-back sort of sound that's not nearly as full-on or swaggering as other male soul of the time. Musiq's even more relaxed than D'Angelo here – and the tunes are awash in warm keyboard lines and mellow bubbling beats – all with plenty of room for Musiq to stretch out in some sweeeeeet vocal lines. Titles include "Speechless", "You & Me", "Just Friends (Sunny)", "Girl Next Door", "Mary Go Round", "Love", "Poparatzi", and "You Be Alright".

Frank Ocean — Channel ORANGE ... CD
Def Jam, 2012. New Copy .... $13.99 14.98
The breakout album for singer Frank Ocean – the featured voice and name attached to some stellar material by other acts leading up to this career-making set for Interscope! Simply put, Channel ORANGE is the hella rare pop phenomenon that not only lives up to the pre-release hype, it actually transcends it! Ocean has a unique and distinct voice and style, and we hope he's here to stay. Includes "Thinkin' About You", "Sierra Leone", "Sweet Life", "Super Rich Kids", "Pilot Jones", "Crack Rock", "Pyramids", "Lost", "Bad Religion", "Pink Matter" and more.

new Jill Scott — Who Is Jill Scott? ... LP
Columbia, 2000. Used 2LP .... $18.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Get ready to discover a fantastic new soul music talent! Jill Scott's the best thing we've heard in years – and she's a perfect example of the killer NuSoul trends that have been forged in the past few years by artists like D'Angelo, Mshell N'degocello, or N'Dambe (but Jill doesn't have an apostrophe mark in her name!) The record's a totally seductive blend of warm instrumentation, subdued funky beats, and immensely captivating soul vocals. The whole thing's awash in Fender Rhodes, giving it a spacey soul sound that will make the record a classic for years to come! Titles include "The Way", "Do You Remember", "Long Rain", "Love Rain", "Honey Molasses", "Slowly Surely", "Watching Me", and "He Loves Me" – but it's allllll good! The LP includes a remix of "Love Rain" featuring Mos Def!

new Various — Brownswood Bubblers Vol 8 – Compiled By Gilles Peterson ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2012. New Copy Gatefold .... $15.99 17.98 Out Of Stock
Gilles Peterson does it again – and proves that he's still got one of the best ears around for choosing new music! Even after seven previous volumes, the Bubblers series is still plenty darn incredible – a great place for getting a taste of the best of the contemporary underground – those amazing artists that Gilles always features on his BBC show – always hand-picked, and chosen without any consideration for commercial directions – as you'll hear on the really revolutionary music in the package. There's a nicely laidback vibe this time around – a reminder of Peterson's tastes for more acoustic and jazz-based modes – and some of the tunes almost echo some of the rootsier music that Brownswood has recorded in recent years, too. Titles include "Volver" by Ana Tijoux, "She Was Out In The Water" by One Little Plane, "Crush" by Hello Skinny, "Linha De Frente" by Criolo, "Again" by Def Sound, "Manchild" by Haydn, and "Bout You" by Rainy Milo.

Abiah — Life As A Ballad ... CD
Nia, 2012. New Copy Gatefold .... $12.99
A beautiful second record from Abiah – warmly wonderful material that's as sensitive as a singer/songwriter set, yet also has a deep sense of soul as well! Vocals and piano are wonderfully intertwined – in a mode that has the depth of jazz, yet the focus of soul music as well – often handled at a gentle pace, but with a flow that really holds us rapt throughout – with an acoustic vibe that's somewhere in a space between Bill Withers and Joan Armatrading. Abiah is an artist who previously recorded for Universal under his first name, Jeremiah – but he sounds even more wonderful here, and the shift to using his last name is definitely a good choice for this next chapter in his music. Titles include "This Time", "Goodbye", "Foolish Heart", "September", "Turn The Light On", and "Life As A Ballad".

Jesse Boykins III & MeLo-X — Zulu Guru ... CD
Ninja Tune, 2012. New Copy .... $13.99
Jesse Boykins on Nina Tune – a surprisingly great combination, and one that seems to give Jesse an even bolder sound than usual! The feel of the record is very much like before – a loose, homegrown set of grooves – sometimes funky, sometimes spacey – definitely aware of hip hop, but not hip hop at all – and instead a very personal blend of lyrics, rhymes, and cosmic jazzy instrumentation! Of course, the contributions of MeLo X are also a key part of the new energy too – but there's also a core vibe to the record that's definitely Boykins continuing on his path from before. The set features guest work by Trae Harris, Mara Hruby, Ango, Christ Turner, Kesed, and Joe Kenneth – and titles include "I'm New Here", "Black Orpheus", "Broken Wings", "Schwaza", "The Perfect Blues", "Searching Her Ways", "Zulu Guru", "Tribe Of Stafa", and "Better For You".

Dessy Di Lauro — This Is Neo Ragtime ... CD
Crazy Glue Music, 2013. New Copy .... $8.99
Quite a chance for singer Dessy Di Lauro – but no surprise, either – given that Dessy's always been one of the more inventive talents of the underground! The set definitely takes its title seriously – and although served up in a contemporary soul style, the music sometimes echoes modes from a century ago – using them with just the right balance to spice things up without pushing Di Lauro into a style that's too far from before. Many numbers have a slight vamp in the rhythms – a gentle swing that bounces around in the way you might have heard in Kid Creole work from the early 80s, but tuned here towards a style that's more 21st Century overall. Some cuts are a bit more straight ahead – and whatever the setting, Dessy sounds great! Titles include "Mysterious", "Bringin It Back", "Never Existed", "Lost In The Jungle", "Why U Raggin", and "Popularity Contest".

Jose James — No Beginning No End ... CD
Blue Note, 2013. New Copy .... $10.99 11.98
A great new chapter in the career of Jose James – and a record that really seems to take his already-amazing vocals to a whole new level! In a relatively short career, Jose's already been turning a lot of heads with his work on other projects, his jazz-based recordings, and his debut for Gilles Peterson's album – yet this Blue Note set may well be his best record to date – and a set that definitely seems to find just the right place for his classic-styled approach to soul music vocals! Backings are mostly live, with a cool small funk group feel – but a bit more laidback too, almost with the jazzy touches you'd hear on some of Gil Scott-Heron's best 70s work, inflected with hipper changes with a 21st Century vibe. The whole thing's great – as important to Blue Note's move into soul as the Robert Glasper Experiment album – and titles include "Vanguard", "Heaven On The Ground", "Come To My Door", "Trouble", "Sword & Gun", and "It's All Over Your Body".

William Kurk — Super Pop Fusion ... CD
William Kurk Productions, 2012. New Copy .... $11.99
Neither pop nor fusion – but a great little record that reminds us why we love William Kurk so much! There's definitely some of the jazzy styles promised by the title, but they're mixed in with Kurk's inventive approach to soul music – warm instrumentation wrapped around compelling lyricism, but in a bouncy, playful way that's light years from the usual! This time around, there's a slight echo of 80s ideals – not so much in the music, which still has lots of 70s warmth – but in the criss-crossing of modes, and in the way that acoustic and electric elements are used together to create a really full sound. Titles include "9 by 3", "Revenge Of Mega Man", "Star Of The Sky", "All Of The Time", "Moonrise", "2012", and "Dragon Force".

Patricia Marx & Bruno E — Patricia Marx & Bruno E (CD & DVD set) ... CD
Tratore (Brazil), 2010. New Copy CD & DVD .... $18.99
The first record in awhile from Patricia Marx – but a set that's definitely worth the wait! Patricia's working here with partner Bruno E – and they've both moved into territory that's quite different than their skittish, clubby work of the Trama years – a warmly gentle groove that's perfect for the most soulful aspects of Patricia's vocals! The approach is almost bossa – but a bit more expansive, thanks to Bruno's thoughtful creation of the tunes – and there's a larger, more ambitious feel that really puts the whole thing in classic Brazilian territory – a welcome return to greatness for both artists! The set features some guest appearances by Xanton Blacq and Osvaldinho Da Cuica – and titles include "Danca Das Flores", "Three Short Stories", "Baiao De Janeiro", "Passaredo", "Minha Paz", "Terra Seca", and "You're Free". Also features a full DVD, too – with 7 songs from the album, plus some bonus features too – including subtitles in English, French, and Portuguese.

Frank McComb — New Beginning ... CD
Boobeescoot, 2010. New Copy .... $8.99
A slim little package, but a record that's overflowing with soul – one of the best full sets to date from the mighty Frank McComb – one of our favorite contemporary soul singers of the past few decades! Frank's got a joyous, soulful flow that's somewhere in a space between the 70s work of Donny Hathaway and DJ Rogers – with all the spiritual overtones that reference might imply – a sense of singing right from the roots on up, and blending his lyrics with sweet keyboard lines that help his music hit even greater heights! If you've ever thought "they just don't make 'em like they did in the old days", this is one set that will definitely change your mind – because after leaving Sony music almost two decades ago, Frank's gotten his sound just right on his own – as you'll hear in this excellent set of tracks that includes "Wishful Thinking", "Since The Day I Said So", "Inspire A Life", "Leading You On", "Jealousy & Envy", and "In My Heart".
(This is Frank McComb's own version – a self produced CDR in a slimline case, with color copy cover.)

Meshell Ndegeocello — Pour Une Ame Souveraine – A Dedication To Nina Simone ... CD
Naive (France), 2012. New Copy .... $14.99 15.99
Continuing proof that Meshell Ndegeocello is one of the most compelling soul singers of the past few decades – as she steps forth here in a tribute to Nina Simone, all with a rich criss-crossing of styles that's unlike any of her previous work! Meshell's vocals are right on the money – with a slight rasp that really suits Nina's spirit well – and the instrumental backings are mighty fresh, and really different than the straighter jazz you might expect from a staid Simone tribute – more in the mix of folk, rock, blues, and jazz elements that Nina used during some of her hippest sides for Philips Records in the 60s! Yet there's also a sparkle that's definitely Meshell's own, too – and the album also features guests work from Cody Chestnutt, Lizz Wright, Toshi Reagon, and others. Titles include "Suzanne", "House Of The Rising Sun", "Turn Me On", "Feeling Good", "Either Way I Lose", "Four Women", "To Be Young Gifted & Black", "See Line Woman", and "Be My Husband".

new Erykah Badu — Baduizm ... CD
Universal, 1997. Used .... $2.99 Just Sold Out!
A strange title for a first record – but quite fitting, given the impact that Erykah Badu has had on soul music! The record defines a whole new style of expression – "Baduizm", if you will – one in which Erykah sings with a depth that stretches back through a century's worth of jazz, soul, and gospel influences – but works a groove in a stripped-down and forward-thinking mode that sets the pace for countless Neo Soul singers to come! Titles include "Certainly (Flipped It)", "Next Lifetime (radio)", "On & On", "Appletree", "No Love", "4 Leaf Clover", and "Sometimes (mix #9)".
