Bob Baldwin — Betcha By Golly Wow – The Songs Of Thom Bell ... CD
Peak, 2012. New Copy .... $14.99 15.98
A sweet instrumental tribute to the 70s soul genius of Thom Bell – plus the Delfonics and Stylistics as well – served up with lots of mellow keyboards from the mighty Bob Baldwin! Given that Bob's got a firm lock on soulful sounds of the 21st Century, he's a great choice to revive the music of Bell – helping to bridge the space of decades with his well-crafted lines on piano and keyboards – and with great guest work from artists who include Marion Meadows, Vivian Green, Will Downing, Paul Taylor, Ragan Whiteside, and Russ Freeman! Titles include "Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time", "Betcha By Golly Wow", "People Make The World Go Round", "Break Up To Make Up", "I'll Be Around", and "La La Means I Love You".

Erykah Badu — New Amerykah Part One (4th World War) ... CD
Motown, 2008. New Copy .... $8.99 15.98
Badu is back with some of the deepest, funkiest and best music of her career – a mindblowing treatise for a New Amerykah – and what we'll consider an instant classic whether the world at large catches on or not! Erykah steps up this time with a set that balances the wilder impulses of her criminally underappreciated Worldwide Underground and more of a hip hop based, righteously grooving style – but still bursts with a freshness that's unrivaled to say the least. From free spirited soul, to sparse hip hop funk this record is both blunt and beautiful – with a slow-building emotional resonance that'll reach the most jaded souls. Modern soul music of the first order that gives us goosebumps from the first spin to the last beat! The album kicks off with Erykah riffing on and remixing Ramp's "American Promise" as an intro – and it just gets deeper from there. Producers/collaborators include Madlib, Sa-Ra, Karriem Riggins, James Poyser and ?uestlove. Amazing!!! Titles include "The Healer", "Me", "My People", "Soldier", "The Cell", "Twinkle", "Master Teacher", "The Hump" and "Telephone". The 9th Wonder produced single "Honey" is an unlisted bonus track.

Jamiroquai — Travelling Without Moving (2CD 20th Anniversary edition) ... CD
Sony (UK), 1996. New Copy 2CD .... $26.99
A mindblower from Jamiroquai – the album that really broke them out of the box, thanks to an increasingly complicated sense of rhythm! For the set, Jay and the group pulled up some of the more dynamic sounds from the London underground, and wove them together with their increasingly great songwriting – coming up with tunes that played beautifully on the dancefloor, yet also offered deeper listening than on previous Jamiroquai efforts! There's still some great 70s elements here, but there's also a more cosmic, righteous vibe too – a hint at spacey London to come, but sent home with a bit more polish here. Titles include "Virtual Insanity", "Cosmic Girl", "Everyday", "Alright", "High Times", "Travelling Without Moving", "Spend A Lifetime", "Use The Force", and "Didjital Vibrations". 2CD version features lots of bonus tracks – including "Cosmic Girl (Quasar mix)", "Virtual Insanity (Salaam Remi mix)", "Alright (Alan Braxe & Fred Falke rmx)", "Do You Know Where You're Coming From (full horns mix)", "High Times (Sanchez radio edit)", "Bullet", "Slippin N Slidin", "Hollywood Swingin", and live versions of "Alright" and "Virtual Insanity".

new Monday Michiru — Soulception ... CD
Adventure Music, 2012. New Copy .... $12.99 15.99
Fantastic sounds from Monday Michiru – quite possibly her greatest album in years, and one that really draws together all the best elements of her style! The vocals are wonderful – soaring, fluid, and filled with soul – almost more confident than ever – and set to these small group jazz arrangements that still bounce around with lots of contemporary rhythms – yet all played live, almost in a clubjazz mode – which makes for a perfect backdrop for Monday's lyrics! As always, the vibe is righteous, and the spirit is totally uplifting – the kind of amazing music that's held us rapt, watching her career for the past two decades – never disappointed, and always blown away by the rich progression in her music. Monday plays a bit of flute on the record, Ed Motta sings guest vocals on a version of the Milton Nascimento classic "Bridges" – and other titles include "Adventures", "What Is In A Soul", "Map Of The Soul", "What Defines You", "Brasilianos", "Til Morning Comes Again", and "The Elusive Song".

new N'Dambi — Pink Elephant ... CD
Stax, 2009. New Copy .... $3.99 14.98
Tremendous work from N'Dambi – a set that really moves her career forward strongly, while still holding onto the best soulful sound of her roots! The album's N'Dambi's first for a big label – the newly-reformed Stax – but it's got a perfectly balanced sound that's sure to please any past fans of her music, and win her a lot more in years to come! Grooves are spare, stark, and simple – with a soulful depth that definitely fits the legendary Stax imprint – and the vocals are fantastic – and proof that there's still some great female deep soul singers working today, if you know where to look. Yet there's also a deeper, more sophisticated vibe running through the mix – that spirit we loved on her Tunin' Up & Cosignin album – and the production by Leon Sylvers is surprisingly wonderful, at a level that really has us loving his studio talents all over again. Titles include "Mind Blowin", "The One", "Take It Out", "Daisy Chain", "Can't Hardly Wait", "What It Takes", "Nobody Jones", and "LIE".

Thing with Neneh Cherry — Cherry Thing ... CD
Smalltown Supersound (Sweden), 2012. New Copy .... $14.99 16.99
A mindblowing collaboration – one that brings the soulful vocals of Nenah Cherry into play with the avant jazz sounds of The Thing – but all in a mode that's unlike anything either artist has recorded before! The mix of talents is no surprise – given that Nenah's dad is Don Cherry, whose own European work helped to set the tone for a generation – and also given that group members Mats Gustafsson, Paal Nilssen Love, and Ingebrigt Haker Flaten all have ears for styles that go way beyond jazz – including a surprisingly great taste for offbeat funk, which really comes to the forefront on this unusual set! Make no mistake, there's still plenty of jazz-based instrumentation – sharp reeds from Mats, heavy drums from Paal, and those magical moody basslines that we love so much from Ingebrigt – but they often get a bit more directed, and are augmented with slight added instrumentation at points – to provide a perfect foil for Cherry's righteous vocals – all with results that easily make the album one of the most unusual soul projects we've heard in years – on a par with equally creative efforts from artists like Meshell Ndegeocello, Erykah Badu, or Georgia Anne Muldrow. Titles include "Cashback", "Dream Baby Dream", "Too Tough To Die", "What Reason Could I Give", "Dirt", "Accordion", and "Sudden Moment".

new Zo — ManMade ... CD
Hard Boiled, 2013. New Copy .... $11.99 12.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
We've been digging Zo for many years, and knew he was a superstar right from the start – but this time around, he blows us away even more than ever! The album's got a special spark that goes beyond even all the great music Zo's given us before – and even past his work with Foreign Exchange – a richness that partly comes from the contributions of guests like Sy Smith, Phonte, Eric Roberson, Choklate, Anthony Davis, and Carmen Rodgers – but which is definitely rooted in Zo's own sublime work on keyboards, his great ear for an understated rhythm, and a Stevie Wonder-like sense of jazz that really shines forth this time around. If you think they're not making classics anymore, you need to wrap your ears around this one – and be prepared to become a believer! Titles include "The Train", "For Tina", "Out In The World", "New In Town", "Tell Me Something New", "Making Time", and "Count To Five".
