On the production tip, 7L pays homage to classic Wu without copying it – and utilizing both classic and completely leftfield samples in a fresh, funky way. The rhymes by Deck and Eso are top shelf, too – with a guest list that includes Roc Marciano, Oh No, Ghostface and others. "Outta Here" is a history of KRS/BDP's early days combined with the story of what happens to performers after fame and fortune has passed, "$5,000 love seat – outta here!" With production by Premier. "I Can't Wake Up" is one of those bizarre rhymes that only KRS could pull off – a nightmare of being a "blunt getting smoked and I can't wake up" while being passed from MC to MC to Bill Clinton...

Real hip hop from a real MC – namely Lil Dap of the early 90s NYC legends Group Home – still sharp and still rhyming over timeless boom bap worthy of his Gang Starr Foundation roots! The production on "Real MC's" is by Freqnik and WDRE – kicking off with heavy beats and scratches, clearly reverent DJ Premier in mood and tone, and without coming off as a throwback. It's not about revisiting the past, it's about showing how fresh that style can be to this day, when done correctly. The flip "Guru Cash Flow" is a more explicit tribute – to Gang Starr MC Guru and to producer Cash Flow.

Afu-Ra first appeared on some Jeru LP tracks. "Whirlwind Thru Cities" is produced by Premier and has the sound similar to early Jeru/Premier tracks. "Trilogy of Terror" features Guru and Hannibal with production by Joe Roach. Both cuts feature scratches and mix by Premier.

Another platter of tasty beats in the tradition of the funky drummer series of break records Ubiquity put out a few years back. Just drums, raw and crisp, and ready for battling, looping or whatever you need. These aren't looped bits from famous breaks or some fool with a drum machine in his bedroom, but fresh new beats recorded by an actual drummer, fills and all! They're conveniently labelled with BPMs, and there's a variety of snare, kick and cymbal tones used throughout. Names like "Premier Funk", "Steve Mack Queen" and "Fat Foot" give you an idea what we're talking about.

What can we say... the amazing first single, produced by Premier, that ruled the airwaves here for months.

MOP's fourth has it's share of filler and repetition, but its high points find the Brownsville boys at their bleak, confrontational best. Once again, sprinkled with beats and mixes by Premier that threaten to steal the show. Includes Welcome To Brownsville", "everyday", "Ante Up", "Face Off 2K1", "Warriorz", "Old Timerz", "Nig-gotiate", "Cold As Ice" and more. 19 in all.

The idea here is sort of a battle on wax . In the blue corner is MC Irisciense of Dilated Peoples and DJ Babu of the Beat Junkies. In the red corner is MC Psycho of Insane Poetry and DJ Rip One of Innernational. Each MC/DJ pair is given the same topic and sample (from "I Put a Spell On You" that Premier used for Biggie's "Kick in the Door.") and whoever comes out with the dopest track wins.

A very strong second LP by BEP that initially failed to rock our world the way similarly minded artists like the Roots did with Things Fall Apart, Slum Village did on Fantastic, Vol 2 and De La did on Stakes Is High. Listening to this a couple years on without the expectations, though we hear a strong & soulful record indeed, particularly the deep soul sheen that glosses most of the sides. Tracks include the Premier-produced "Bep Empire" (is it just us, or are most of the NuHoppers nearly always at their best when they rely on tried and true hip hop production?), "Weekends", "Get Original", "Cali To New York" featuring De La Soul, "On My Own" featuring Les Nubian & Mos Def, "Release", "Bridging The Gaps", "Go Go", "Rap Song" featuring Wyclef, "Bringing It Back", "Tell Your Mama Come", the great single "Request Line" featuring Macy Gray, and more.
