This one's truly a conceptual triumph, if there ever was such a thing – one of the greatest hip hop producers alive, given carte blanche with the source beats of the century! Madlib's Blue Note crates are heavily weighed in the mid 60s through mid 70s electric beats that often get the shaft in mainstream jazz round-ups, but floor the beathead world into overdrive. Re-interpretations, remixes, and revisions are spliced seamlessly with the source samples, creating a whole new world where hip hop and late model live funk not only co-exists with classic Blue Note jazz, but it actually draws a linear transition between the 2 genius art forms. Beautiful stuff – if the album isn't the most original idea to come along all of these years into the hip hop & jazz underground, it's certainly one of the most perfectly realized projects of its kind, ever! It's one for the time capsule – pure funky sample wizardry by any standard! Dirt Dog's 2nd album is a little more schizophrenic, twisted, and under the influence than his first. It sounds a little more inspired by Rick James and Flavor Flav, as raw dog as a hip hopper can shimmy without getting arrested. Great sounds from a very fresh moment in the New Orleans scene – a time when the older street band style came into play with the hip hop styles of the younger generation – presented here in a blend that's pretty darn amazing, and surprisingly free of cliche! The work here is mostly from an early indie moment, and the production really helps keep all the best elements upfront – from the sing-song rhymes of Ricky B to the bouncing percussion that somehow feels live, even when processed – and which is often mixed with just the right amount of band instrumentation to inflect the grooves with some very soulful energy. It seems like when this came out, critics, promoters, and even DJs liked to drop the term "Trip Hop" whenever possible, and this album was held up as the watershed mark. A few years down the line and it still holds up, but as an instrumental hip hop LP, as much as a rock album (Shadow's gone on to show his true colors with subsequent efforts) or anything else. Cinematic and epic in scope, this LP as much as anything else helped resurrect the career of David Axelrod, though some of us were hip to him all along, but Josh Davis is clearly a fellow traveller in the coloristic approach he uses, that never forgets the funk. Two from the second Fugees LP. We're still amazed at how much the Fugees improved from their first album – they finally bring Lauryn Hill to the front and her dope rhymes and sung choruses hold everything together. While were not fans of anything Wycleff and Pras have done since, they manage to contribute some nice verses here.
