A damn surprise to our ears – a record that shouldn't work well, but which succeeds tremendously – bringing all the best part of Elvis Costello and The Roots into play perfectly – with a sound that's unlike anything either of them have ever done before! Costello has way more bite than on most records of the past few decades – set up perfectly here in these tightly snapping rhythms that echo all the best live bits of The Roots' records, but which work surprisingly well for Elvis' lyrics in the lead. And The Roots get some very cool keyboard work from Costello – including some especially nice Wurlitzer, played with a rootsy, respectful mode that brings in even more soul than their backings have on their own. And although we've loved The Roots since their earliest days in the hip hop underground, the album's also a strong statement of just how far they've come in the pop mainstream – a true testament to the growth of ?uestlove and crew, and their sense of versatility and vision. Titles include "Wise Up Ghost", "Walk Us Uptown", "Sugar Won't Work", "Refuse To Be Saved", "Tripwire", "Wake Me Up", and "Come The Meantimes". CD
A nice collaborative effort from underground hip hop phenomenon John Robinson and French producer Kyo Itachi – with gritty soul cinema and Asian action soundtracks inspired backdrop – and smart, ever-flowing rhymes by JR! John Robinson is a classic rap inspired mic fundamentalist, seemingly never at a loss for lyrics and he delivers here as strongly as always. Intachi's production is just as impressive – using tried-and-true blueprint style, with is own fresh, personal stamp. Includes "All Hail The Honorable", "Who Goes There" feat Hus and Skanks of Bankai Fam, "The Rap Shogun", "Life Itself", "Manga", "Indigo Child" with cuts by DJ Djaz, "War Spelled Backwards" feat Eloh Kush of Angelz INC, "Mystical Strings" and more – plus bonus remixes of standout tracks by Astronote, Phalo Pantoja, Venom and Azaia.
