✨✧ Lack Of AfroMy Groove Your Move ... CD
Freestyle (UK), 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
A diverse, far reaching approach to funk flavors the second full length from Lack Of Afro – who may lack the follicles, but aren't lacking the love – with a more sophisticated and confident feel this time out! The crew follows through on the promise of the debut here, continuing their way of deftly blending live instrumention and programming, but hitting on a wider spectrum of the sound. A bit of tight funky soul, a little hip hop funk, 70s cinema sounds and more – with heavy beats, rhythms and Rhodes, and more elements as the mood and mode command. 13 tracks on the CD: "Special Baby", "Together At Last", "Mo Filth, "Beautiful Here", "The Basis", "Suspicious Glow" feat Wax, "Rejection In 6/8 Time", "Rhythm Comes Forward" and more. OrgoneChimera ... CD
3 Palm/Colemine, 2024. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
Deeply soulful work from Orgone – a group who are working at a level here that we never would have expected a decade back! Orgone have always been great, but sometimes they felt less like an organic funk combo than one who had an ear for the right sorts of sounds – something they still have here, but which they bring out with a masterful approach that really rises above previous efforts – a larger, richer approach to funk that sometimes even hits cinematic territory – but all without ever losing its small combo edge! The keyboards and production are especially nice, and the drums are super funky – on titles that include "Parasols", "Basilisk", "Zum Zum", "Running Low", "The Husk", "Tula Muisi", "Coronado", and "Hallowed Dreams". ✨✧ Raekwon/El Michels AffairPJs From Afar (orig, clean, inst)/Little Sloppy (bonus beat)/Phil My Don/This One's For My Baby ... 12-inch
Truth & Soul, 2007. Near Mint- (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
Wu Tang lyrical swordsman Raekwon teams with Brooklyn's finest modern funk groovers El Michels Affair on the "PJs (From Afar)" – a live in the studio re-imagining on the Pete Rock/Raekwon/Masta Killa track "PJs" – plus a handful of cinematic soul styled instrumentals! "PJs" is a live in the studio re-imagining of the Pete Rock/Raekwon/Masta Killa cut of the same name – a true hybrid of 70s style funky soundtrack soul – with an overall vibe that's more attuned to golden age hip hop thanks to the solid wordplay from the Chef! The Affair's live backing is surprisingly hip hop centered, too – with an incredibly sinister bass groove and persistent funky drums leading the way! "A Little Sloppy" is a brief bit of instrumental funk with a more ragged drum style. "Phil My Don" is a mirror image on the flip, with some spacey soul keys out front. "This One's For My Baby" is a longer funky instrumental, the most cinematic sounding tune of all. A straight up hip hop funk gem! (Hip Hop, Deep Funk) 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Ella ThompsonDomino ... LP
Hope Street, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Ella Thompson claims influences from older cinematic styles, and there's definitely some more spacious modes going on at times here – but her vocal approach is also very much in the territory of 21st Century soul singers, especially in the way she can draw out and extend the emotion in a lyric! There's some instrumentation on the set from the Frollen Music Library, who serve up some of the more cinematic backdrops – and titles include "Can't Take It Back", "Never Fight The Way You Feel", "To Light The Lantern", "Domino", "Lotus & The Lily", and "When The Cold Wind Blows". LP, Vinyl record album
