AliveCall It Jazz ... CD
Redwood/Celeste (Japan), 1981. Used ... $11.99 14.99
The second album by this excellent all-female San Francisco jazz combo – a live date that's even more cooking than their debut! As before, there's a sweetly breezy style to the record – that hip SF sound of the 70s – with echoes of Braziliana and soul amidst the group's jazzier leanings – all wrapped together with a sound that's tight, but never uptight! The female vocals give the music a feel that's like Janet Lawson, Sheila Landis, or some of the hipper European singers of the 70s – and instrumentation is mostly acoustic, save for a bit of Fender Rhodes. Titles include a version of Gil Scott-Heron's "Willing", plus "Greeting Song", "Call It Jazz", "Too Bad", "Golden River/Golden Dream", and "Heaven Is In Your Mind". CD
(2000 Japanese pressing – includes obi!)

✨✧ AliveCity Life ... CD
Alive/Celeste (Japan), 1982. Used ... Out Of Stock
A standout classic from the Bay Area scene – a wicked batch of grooves from an all-girl jazz combo! The singer in the group is Rhiannon – and she's got a bit of a Flora Purim feel – soaring one minute, dreamy the next – just right for the combo's blend of Fender Rhodes, piano, bass, drums, and percussion. There's a really classic feel to the set – and Rhiannon alternates nicely between scatted and sung lyrics – most famously on the album's classic cover of "Skindo Le Le", which is almost better known than the original by Viva Brasil! Other great cuts include a version of Cedar Walton's "Afreaka", Miles Davis' "Four", and the titles "What Is Life", "Happy Ending", and "City Life". CD

✨✧ Norma WinstoneSomewhere Called Home ... CD
ECM, 1987. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mature work from Norma Winstone – a tremendous evolution in style from her earlier recordings in the UK jazz/rock scene – much more subtle, and delivered with a compelling degree of sensitivity! Winstone is on vocals throughout, and the only instrumental backing is from the piano of John Taylor, and clarinet and tenor of Tony Coe – both well-chosen players for a session like this, given that both had also matured greatly by the time – working with just the right sense of subtlety and space to match Winstone's evocative vocals. Titles include "Cafe", "Sometime Ago", "Prologue", "Out Of This World", "Tea For Two", "Celeste", and "Sea Lady". CD
(2008 pressing in a gatefold sleeve.)

✨✧ Chet BakerChet Baker Sings ... CD
Pacific Jazz, 1954. Used ... Out Of Stock
Maybe one of the greatest albums of Chet Baker vocal material you could ever hope to buy – a fantastic testament of the young talent at the top of his game – effortlessly moving between well-conceived trumpet solos and those fantastic vocals that were unlike any other singer at the time! Half the album was recorded live, the other half in the studio, but there's a very unified vibe to the whole thing – and the great Russ Freeman plays piano on both tracks, and a bit of celeste at a few points too. Titles include "That Old Feeling", "Look For The Silver Lining", "There Will Be Another You", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "My Buddy", "My Funny Valentine", and "I Get Along Without You Very Well". Every track is great, and these are the original vocal recordings that put Chet on the map! (Jazz, Vocalists) CD
