Fela — Best Of The Black President 2 (deluxe edition with bonus DVD) ... CD
Knitting Factory, 1970s. New Copy CD & DVD .... $23.99 24.98
Hard to go wrong with a set like this – because in our opinion, just about every track recorded by Fela is a "best" – which makes the collection a massive batch of goodness all the way through! Every track here is presented in its original extended version – a dozen massive slices of Afro Funk, which packaged together equal the equivalent of at least 5 or 6 separate albums by Fela – another factor that makes the collection a great one! The 2CD set is filled with gems that helped redefine the sound of funk, soul, and world music back in the 70s – titles that include "Monkey Banana", "Everything Scatter", "Expensive Sh*t", "Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am", "Underground System (part 2)", "Sorry Tears & Blood", "Colonial Mentality", "Yellow Fever", "He Miss Road", "Black Man's Cry", "Mr Follow Follow", and "Na Poi". Also features a bonus DVD – with Fela's 1984 performance at the Glastonbury Festival, and an interview too!

new Miriam Makeba — Pata Pata – The Hit Sound Of Miriam Makeba ... LP
Reprise, Late 60s. Very Good .... $2.99
Although South African vocalist Miriam Makeba had been cracking the American scene for the better part of the 60s, this was the album that really put her on the map – as her hit version of the song "Pata Pata" forever guaranteed that African-tinged grooves would have a place in the pop charts! The track's included as the lead off song on this classic album of "uptown African soul" (if we might use such a term), and other goodies include "Click Song Number 1", "A Piece Of Ground", "West Wind", "Ha Po Zamani", and "Jol'inkomo".
(Cover has light wear. Vinyl appears to be cloudy, but plays fine.)

Olatunji — Soul Makossa ... LP
Paramount, Early 70s. Very Good- .... $19.99
A killer album of Afro Funky tracks, and certainly one of Olatunji's best! The record was recorded in the early 70s, and it features Olatunji breaking past his usual heavy blend of African percussion, into a vein that's a lot more tinged with jazz and soul touches. He gets some great help on the session from Joe Henderson and Reggie Lucas, who jazz things up a bit – and the record's filled with nice long funky tracks like "Masai", "O Wa", and "Dominira", plus a funky cover of the title track!
(PLEASE NOTE: Cover has waviness and peeling due to moisture. Top seam has a 6 inch split.)

Various — African Scream Contest – Raw & Psychedelic Afro Sounds From Benin & Togo 70s ... CD
Analog Africa (Germany), 1970s. New Copy .... $22.99
One of the coolest African collections we've seen in years – a beautiful assortment of untapped grooves from the 70s, put together with a massive booklet that sets a whole new standard in packaging! The grooves here are different from other Afro Funk collections of the time – definitely more in the raw and psychedelic territory promised by the title, and filled with hard-edged vocals that surely know how to scream! There's still plenty of funk in the rhythms, but the execution is often quite unusual – less directly influenced by American soul, and very much off in its own direction. Lots of choppy guitar, too – and the set comes with a massive 42 page booklet filled with full color images and loads of notes. Titles include "Gbeti Madjro" by Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo De Cotonou, "Mi Ma Kpe Dji" by Picoby Band D'Aborney, "Mi Kple Dogbekpo" by Lokonon Andre & Les Volcans, "Oya Ka Jojo" by Les Volcans De La Capital, "Ou C'Est Lui Ou C'Est Moi" by Vincent Ahehehinnou, "Wait For Me" by Roger Damawuzan, "Leki Santchi" by Napo De Mi Amor Et Ses Black Devils, "Ye Nan Lon An" by Orchestre Super Jheevs Des Paillotes, and "Houiou Djin Nan Zon Aklumon" by Discafric Band.

Various — Music From Saharan Cellphones Vol 2 ... LP
Sahel Sounds, 2012. New Copy .... $12.99
A mindblowing follow-up to the first Saharan Cellphone collection – and like that one, a set that's comprised of music from underground sources in contemporary Mali – pulled from the memory cards of local cellphones! Don't think that the music's tinny or amateurish, though – as the music here really represents a strong subculture expressing itself in very modern ways – recordings that rival most of the harder-edged African work we've heard in recent years, just circulated on phones instead of records! Styles range from hip hop to more familiar Mali modes – and titles include "Peguele" by DJ Mopao, "Hwa Heda" by Cheba Wassila, "Souveniram" by Kouedede, "Anar" by Mdou Moctar", "Imidiwane Friday" by Mouma Bob, and "Soul Tamashek" by Lakal Kanaye.

new Abelardo Carbano — Muevela/La Negra Del Negrerio (2013 Record Store Day Release) ... 7-inch
Vampi Soul (Spain), Early 80s. New Copy .... $8.99 Out Of Stock
Wild grooves from Abelardo Carbano – music recorded in the early 80s, but with a spirit that's much more ancient! "Muevela" has this great skittish groove that bounces up and down – which is then topped with this raspy vocal that's more spoken than shouted, and encouraged by this cute chorus bit – all tied together with some mighty cool guitar! "La Negra" is a bit more straightforward, but still pretty darn great – a cool Colombian rhythm, and lots of hip twangy guitar echoing forth over the grooves!
