Rare late 60s funky R&B from singer Al
Reed! Both sides are written by
Reed, recorded for his own Axe label and arranged by New Orleans legend Wardell Quezerque. "99 44/100 Pure Love" has an unruly title, alright – but the funky dancefloor groove, well, it just plain rules! Charismatic, laidback vocals and steady, slow-building rhythms, backed by classic-level Wardell horn arrangements! "Shake 'Em Up" is just as great, if not better – with some piano and guitar in the mix more prominently –and a groove that indeed shakes pretty feverishly!
