A stunner of a solo acoustic folk guitar record from Daniel Bachman – one that rivals some of the great archival releases on Tompkins Square – though this one was recorded in 2012, and Bachman is a young player just a couple years into his twenties! Raw, string-buzzing immediacy and dexterous playing from young Bachman – and it's incredibly engaging stuff, too! He's also one of the relatively few contemporary folk instrumentalists – along with with Nashville's William Tyler – who truly evoke the spirit of trailblazers like Fahey and Basho for us. Classic level greatness from Bobby Bare – with The Real Thing from 1970! At his peak – and we consider this to be peak material – Bobby Bare had an easygoing, laconic storyteller vocal style that's as great as any of his more celebrated peers – plus add a perfect mix Nashville Sound lushness and stripped-down country laid down by the best session musicians in the business and the recipe is pretty close to perfection! Includes: "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down", "The Chicago Story", "Maggie (I Wish We'd Never Met)", "California Dreams", "Tulsa County", "Barbara Joy", and more.

A perfect illustration of the genius of guitarist Robbie Basho – a set recorded early in his career, but with music that's light years ahead of most of his contemporaries! Although a set of solo acoustic guitar tracks, the music isn't really folk – nor is it the sort of acoustic underground music that would emerge more strongly in the 70s – and instead, it's got a real edge throughout – lots of odd tones and weird phrasings that almost preface a whole generation of guitar experimentalists like Derek Bailey or Eugene Chadbourne – yet still within a setting that's relatively tuneful overall! Basho's music has this subtle mysticism that we really love – and the solo sounds here are as evocative as the titles – which include "Mountain Man's Farewell", "Seal Of The Blue Lotus", "Sansara In Sweetness After Sandstorm", "Dravidian Sunday", and "Bardo Blues".

Johnny's first LP for Columbia! His terse, spare Sun style is still in evidence here with a slightly more crisp and polished sound, but no less powerful thanks to that famous wobbly baritone. Johnny would soon start stretching out good and wide thanks to the full creative freedom Columbia provided, but you get nothing but the taught, rock solid early style here. Tracks include "One More Ride", "The Troubadour", "Pickin' Time", "Suppertime", "That's Enough", and "I Still Miss Someone".

A should-be Cali country rock classic by Chris Darrow – and a real rare gem of a record we'd put right up there with the best of its kind! Multi-instrumentalist Darrow might be best known to psych enthusiasts – as he was a founding member of Kaleidoscope – but as a session player, he's worked with an eclectic roster of major players that includes Frank Zappa, Gram Parsons, Leonard Cohen, Sly Stone, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and others. His solo work is akin to some other great, but better-known Cali country rockers, and honestly, we'd rate this record up against the aforementioned Mr. Parsons – it's really that good – but with more eclectic instrumentation. Catchy songs that are well sung and expertly-crafted – with Chris playing guitars, mandolin, dobro, fiddle and just about anything else with strings on it – and some light percussion, too! Other players include Ed Black, Loren Newkirk, Arnie Moore and Mickey McGhee – plus a sweet group of backing vocalists that includes Jennifer Warren. Titles include "Beware Of Time", "Lovers Of Sleep Abed Tonight", "Shawnee Moon", "Move On Down The Line", "Song For Steven", "Cocaine Lil", "Alligator Man", "Keep On Trying", "New Zoot", "The Show Must Go On", "The Sky Is Not Blue Today" and "We Can Both Learn To Say I Love You".

Dylan's wonderful foray into country rock – the great Nashville Skyline! He takes his voice into a strangely crooning arena that we hadn't heard from him before or since, kinda adding the mysterious vibe of the whole thing. Titles include a duet with Johnny Cash on "Girl From The North Country", plus "Lay Lady Lay", "Country Pie", "To Be Alone With You", and "One More Night". This Sundazed reissue is from the original stereo masters and comes on 180 gram vinyl.

A pair of classics from John Hartford – with bonus tracks too! First up is Aereo Plain – a groundbreaking album from the young John Hartford – not really folk, not really country – but a unique hybrid of both, and done with a good ear for unique sounds as well! Hartford's a really unique artist, especially at this key point in his career – and he's working here with producer David Bromberg, who himself was also helping to reinvent acoustic music at the time. The Warner Brothers placement of the record is key – as Hartford's got this sense of the past, mixed with the irony of the present – one which strongly echoes some of the hip rock contemporaries on the label, particularly the up and coming brand of post-Sunset LA talents. Titles include "Turn Your Radio On", "Up On The Hill Where They Do The Boogie", "First Girl I Loved", "With A Vamp In The Middle", and "Tear Down The Grand Ole Opry". Next is Morning Bugle – a record that's even rootsier than John's first for Warner – with just a bit of bass backing from Dave Holland, and excellent guitar from Norman Blake next to Hartford's own banjo. As before, the lyrics have this really unusual bent – steeped in images of the past, but with the sensibilities of the present – particularly the left-leaning politics of the early 70s time in which the album was recorded. Titles include "Streetcar", "My Rag", "Old Joe Clark", "On The Road", "Howard Hughes Blues", and "Got No Place To Go". 2CD set features 8 bonus tracks too – including "Airport Floor", "Back Up & Push", "Flower Power Died", and "Weave & Way".

Pivotal singles from the amazing Wanda Jackson – one of the greatest female rock and country voices from the 50s onward – who mixes a cutesy coo and a feral growl for a sound that was pretty much unprecedented at the time! The material bridges proto rock and country music in a way that confused the heck outta radio programmers and the label's hope to break her into superstardom back in the day – and Wanda had a voice that could've (and should've) made her a star on par with the Sun Studios boys club. She's tough and tender at the same time – and Capitol producer Ken Nelson is near the top of his game here, too. This really is the best of her Capitol singles – 29 in all – including "I Gotta Know", "Fujiyama Mama", "Honey Bop", "Did You Miss Me?", "Right Or Wrong", "Sinful Heart", "In The Middle Of A Heartbreak", "Mean Mean Man', "Sympathy", You Bug Me Bad", "Silver Threads And Golden Needles", "Rock Your Baby", "(Every Time They Play) Our Song", "Little Charm Bracelet", "No Wedding Bells For Joe", "Honey Bop" and more.

Dark genius from Waylon Jennings' late 60s/early 70s years at RCA – a surprisingly wonderful batch of tunes that have the deep-voiced singer working through an array of contemporary themes! True, a number of the cuts here are country covers of mainstream hits – but Waylon's deeply personal readings really transform the songs magically – almost pointing the way towards years-later country variants from folks like Johnny Cash or Willie Nelson, delivered here with a subtlety that's kept them hidden for all these many years. And as with other great sets on the Omni label, there's a rich batch of unusual tunes in the mix, too – the kind of offbeat country gems that we've come to love Omni for, and really praise them highly for brilliant collections like this! 28 tracks in all – including "Rock Salt & Nails", a duet with Lee Hazlewood – plus "Just To Satisfy You", "For The Kids", "Yes Virginia", "Singer Of Sad Songs", "Beautiful Annabel Lee", "Delia's Gone", "Don't Play The Game", "Where Love Has Died", "Sunday Morning Coming Down", "The Road", "The Days Of Sand & Shovels", and "Destiny's Child".

A lovely full-length from singer-songwriter Jeanne Jolly – whose name you might recognize as a Foreign Exchange collaborator – and here on her own, she delivers in a beautifully sung and classic country-leaning style, though with a contemporary sound. It's really, really good stuff! It doesn't surprise us at all to see the Foreign Exchange name on a country-ish record, as they've been one of the most diversely soulful operations around for years now. Kudos to the label for branching out even further style-wise, but we don't want to deflect any credit from Jeanne – she's wonderful! Classic-rooted singer-songwriter material and with a perennial sound. Includes "Angels On Hayworth St", "Sweet Love", "Happy Days Café", "The Hard Way", "Long Way Home", "Long Way Home", "All Is Not Lost", "Round And Round Again", "The Kiss", "Good Man" and more.

A full blown duets album by Bonnie Prince Billy and Dawn McCarthy of Faun Fables –co-headlining a straight-up beautiful set of tunes once sung by The Everly Brothers! They're not going for the hits here, rather taking on some of the more unusual Everly originals and covers – which include tunes written by Kris Kristofferson, Jackie Edwards, John Denver, King/Goffin and others. As longtime fans of The Everlys at their wierdest and most adventurous, we can't recommend this enough! Billy & Dawn clearly love the songs, and deliver with genuine warmth and affection – and go all in with the production, too! It's sweet and intimate, yet beautifully textured with steel, electric and acoustic guitars, mandolin, harmonium, flute, cello and keyboards – even a sousaphone and tuba! It's mostly got some leftfield country charm, but there's a chugging rocker or 2 in the mix, too. Titles include "Breakdown", "Empty Boxes", "Milk Train", "What Am I Llivng For", "My Little Yellow Bird", "So Sad", "Omaha", "Poems, Prayers And Promises", "Just What I Was Looking For", "Kentucky" and more.

Godlike! This is probably the finest Nick Drake album that you can buy, and it's an incredible mix of folksy vocals, jazzy guitar, and incredible baroque arrangements! The album includes Drake's wonderful "River Man", one of his best-ever songs (and maybe one of THE best-ever songs!) – plus loads of other excellent cuts like "Fruit Tree", "Day Is Done", "Three Hours", "Saturday Sun", and "Time Has Told Me". Fantastic – and essential!

Raw & rambling folk sounds from Michael Hurly – recorded in early '72 – some of his better material of the era, living up to if not surpassing his Armchair Boogie of a couple years earlier! Michael's in seemingly amiable spirit here on some tunes, and a standing on shakier ground and in scarier waters at other points, with some country rock tinged jams and weirdo troubadour numbers. Titles include "Blue Driver", "Water Train", "The Sun Is Slowly Sinking", "I'm Worried, I'm Worried", "In Florida", "Lilly Pads Upon The Pond", "Trinidad" and more.
