Gal CostaRecanto Gal Ao Vivo (DVD) ... DVD
Universal (Brazil), 2013. New Copy DVD ... $16.99
Amazing sounds from Gal Costa – a brilliant live album that follows strongly in the mode of her Recanto studio album! Like that set, this one features Gal in the most experimental style she's used in years – bits of electronics and contemporary underground modes layered in with her sublime vocals – all in ways that reopen that leftfield side of Costa's talents that have been buried for so many years! Some tracks are quite intimate and personal, others are very powerful – and the performance was put together by both Caetano and Moreno Veloso, with backing by a trio that also features percussion from Domenico too. Titles include "Tudo Gil", "Da Maior Importancia", "Mansidao", "Forca Estranha", "Meu Bem Mel Mal", "O Amor", "Baby", "Deus E O Amor", "Segunda", "Barato Total", and "Autotune Autoerotico". DVD features subtitles in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. DVD

Milton NascimentoUma Travessia – 50 Anos De Carreira Ao Vivo (DVD) ... DVD
Universal (Brazil), 2013. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
One of the best albums we've heard from Milton Nascimento in years – and a really beautiful live performance that pays tribute to his 5 decades in music! The performance has a crisp, personal quality we don't always hear in Milton's studio work these days – and the band worked with Nascimento on the arrangements, which have just the right mix of complexity and intimacy to recall his corner club years – and still bring out all the best aspects in his vocals. Of course, it helps that most of the tunes here are classics – and even later numbers seem to benefit from the old school handling of the set – as you'll hear on titles that include "Anima", "Lagrimas Do Sul", "Cais", "Vera Cruz", "Para Lennon E McCartney", "Cancaoes E Momentos", "Travessia", "Raca", "Maria Maria", and "Amor De Indio". New Marisa MonteVerdade Uma Ilusao – Tour 2012/2013 (DVD) ... DVD
Universal (Brazil), 2014. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Really lovely live work from Marisa Monte – an artist who's kept on making marvelous records over the years – even long after the initial wave of attention that brought her some global fame! This set's got Monte working in a mature mode that's almost in the territory of Gal Costa or Maria Bethania – stepping out front of some commanding arrangements that sometimes use bits of strings, sometimes have a smaller spontaneous group – but which are always topped by Monte's proud, confident vocals. There's a classic feel here that's almost better than some of her studio work over the past decade or so – although that's all pretty great too – and title sinclude "Arrepio", "Descalco No Parque", "Diariamente", "ECT", "De Mais Ninguem", "Dizem", "Lencinho Querido", and 'Sono Come Tu Mi Vuoi". DVD features one more song than the CD – plus bonus clips too – and also features subtitles in Portuguese and English. DVD

New Caetano VelosoMultishow Ao Vivo – Abracaco (DVD) ... DVD
Universal (Brazil), 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Caetano Veloso looks like a bit of an old geezer on the back cover of this live set – but damn if he isn't still one of the most exciting talents in the world, even alongside most of the contemporary generation too! The performance is a concert that's very much in the spirit of the studio album Abracao – and the two wonderful records that preceded it – music that's easily some of the most inventive, creative, and immediately appealing that Caetano Veloso has ever recorded – at a level that easily sums up all his past genius in a range of styles, but finds a way to fuse the whole thing down to a very focused core. The vocals alone are wonderful – that haunting style that Veloso really seemed to develop strongly after his years in London – and the instrumentation is often spare and simple, but with these great little twists and turns – especially on the rhythms and phrasing. And despite what must be a relatively large venue, Veloso preserves this sense of intimacy throughout – really reminding us of his undeniable pull, not just in Brazilian culture, but around the globe as well. Titles include "Homem", "Quando", "Um", "Lindeza", "Reconvexo", "Voce", "A", "Funk", "Alguem", and "Eclipse". DVD features 5 more tracks than the CD – plus subtitles in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. DVD
