Arved Ashby — Absolute Music Mechanical Reproduction (paperback) ... Book
University Of California Press, 2010. New Copy .... $4.99 27.95
A pretty well-done look at the effect of recording technology on music in the 20th century – with an especially strong focus on the way that classical has been shaped by the evolution in sound! Author Arved Ashby definitely writes here from an academic perspective, but has a way of making the information really come alive – even if, like us, you don't have a great understanding of the artists and works involved – but have an ear that's been trained on a lifetime's worth of records! There's plenty of pop reference points too – crucial to an understanding of the way that technical shifts impacted all sorts of music – and the book features a huge section of notes at the back as well. 316 pages, softcover.

Kim Fowley — Lord Of Garbage (paperback) ... Book
Norton/Kicks, 2012. New Copy .... $12.99 13.95
Kim Fowley, an author? Stranger things have happened – and given Fowley's penchant for putting his finger in just about every pie that came within reach, the whole thing's no surprise at all! The book is a stunning account of Fowley's important years in the music business – working in the sometimes lowest reaches of the LA scene, yet sometimes hitting the highest heights too – all told in really interesting detail, with a pacing that's completely unique! At lots of points, it kind of feels like Kim's telling you the story of his life over a few dozen drinks at the bar – with all the tangents you might expect – but at other times, there's this lucidity that's right in line with the Fowley genius in the studio – that way of being and going crazy while still holding all your cool – summed up perfectly in these few lines near the end of the book: "Well this is my version of what happened to me. I don't know if it really happened or not, but I think it did. I'm holding back a lot of stuff because it's too overwhelming in its darkness and it would be a sad read."

new Anthony Reynolds — Impossible Dream – The Story Of Scott Walker & The Walker Brothers (paperback) ... Book
Jawbone, 2009. New Copy Book .... $4.99 19.95 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the headiest books we've ever seen on The Walker Brothers – and certainly much deeper than any of the pop press that used to come out on the group! Author Anthony Reynolds relates a wealth of details here – the rise of The Walker Brothers, the dissolution of the group, the key solo years of Scott and John, and their revival in the 70s – plus information on later developments as well – all with a lot more text than fluffy photos. The book's really heavy on detail at some points – and as proof of that, not only includes an appendix with stage and TV appearances by the group, but also a discography, and a full listing of songs/dates for the Scott Walker TV Show! 352 pages, softcover.
