new Various — Top Deck Presents Ska Vocalists – 40 Crucial Vocal Classics ... CD
Universal (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy .... $12.99
The birth of ska – served up in a host of hard-edged classics from the early years – great Jamaican tracks that sound a lot more like soul music than most later incarnations of the genre – no surprise, given that many of these cuts were crafted from the strong influence of American radio on the Kingston airwaves! The rhythms are definitely what you'd call ska, but the vocals often have a deeper approach than we're used to in later work of the genre – heavily tilted towards the soul and R&B side of the spectrum, especially when more than one singer is featured on a track – and often mixed with razor-sharp instrumentation that packs the punch of a vintage funky 45! Titles include "Valley Of Green" and "Take Your Time" by Jackie Opel, "Men Alone" by The Deacons, "Lonely & Blue Boy" by Ferdie Nelson, "Sweet Dreams" by Bibby & The Astronauts, "Snake In The Grass" by Larry Marshall, "Ten Virgins" by The Angelic Brothers, "Everyday" by The Avalons, "My Darling Josephine" by Joe G Henry, "Dream For Tomorrow" by Al & The Vibrators, "Fresh Out Of Love" and "Someone" by The Jetts, and "Never Too Young To Learn" by Andy & The Avalons. 40 tracks in all!

new Bunny Wailer — Roots Radics Rockers Reggae (aka In I Father's House) ... LP
Shanachie, 1980. Used .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Bunny Wailer's last totally roots oriented sets, before he began dabbling a bit in dancehall, and a mighty one at that. Livingston gets help from a cast of heavyweights, like Horsemouth Wallace, Robbie Shakespeare, Chinna Smith, Erest Ranglin, Tommy McCook, Bobby Ellis, Deadly Headly Bennet and Sticky Thompson. This US pressing, issued 3 years after the original Jamaican release, features all 6 cuts from the original LP: "Let Him Go", "Love Fire", "Roots Radics Rockers Reggae", "Rockin Time", "Rockers" and "Wirly Girly", plus an additional track, "Cease Fire".

new Harry J All Stars — Dubbing At Harry J's 1972-1975 ... CD
Jamaican Recordings (UK), Early/Mid 70s. New Copy .... $9.99 Out Of Stock
Probably our favorite of the dub reissues on the Jamaican Recordings label, versions of many great Bunny Lee productions, all previously unreleased. As you'd expect, the tracks were cut at Harry J's, with Carlton Barrett, Santa Davis, Family Man, Tommy McCook and Vin Gordon, among others, and many unique renditions of rhythms you know and love, including "Every Dub Is A Star", "Dub In The Streets", "None Shall Escape The Dubment" and "Bag Full A Dub", plus a few more obscure nuggets, like :No Mail No Dub", "Let Dub Down" and "From Man To Dub". Fourteen tracks in all.
