Black Slate — Amigo (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Ensign/Big Break (UK), 1980. New Copy .... $14.99
A killer debut from Black Slate – one of the leading lights in British reggae at the start of the 80s – and a group with a warmly soulful sound! Black Slate have a great way of sounding smooth, but never too slick – a balance between their laidback energy and the mellow production modes of the set – all of which give them a vibe that's a bit like the best of Third World in the late 70s, although less commercial overall. The album's got a wonderfully warm appeal – and were it on Island Records, would have undoubtedly cracked the charts on this side of the Atlantic too. But it's also that overseas obscurity that makes it a bit more of a gem overall. Titles include "Amigo", "Sticks Man 80", "Boom Boom", "Romans", "Thin Line Between Love & Hate", and "Freedom Time". CD also features bonus tracks – "Black Slate Rock (12" version)", "Amigo (single)", and "Boom Boom (single)".

Keith Hudson — Torch Of Freedom ... CD
Atra/Hot Milk (UK), 1975. New Copy .... $13.99
An amazing debut from Keith Hudson – a record with undeniably soulful power all the way through – a strong testament to the lasting talents of this memorable singer from the 70s! The production's mighty nice too – often dubby at points, yet in really unconventional ways – with keyboards that tipple behind Hudson on the vocal tracks, then space out more on the instrumental ones – but often a bit more synthy than some of his contemporaries, in ways that really stand out strongly – especially after repeated listenings. The whole thing's a treasure – a record that grabs you right away, then holds on for years – and titles include "Lost All Sense Of Direction", "Jah Jah", "Don't Look At Me So", "Look At Me", "Don't Let The Teardrops Fool You", "Teardrops", "Like I'm Dying", "Turn The Heater On", "So Cold Without You", "Five More Minutes Of Your Time", "My Time", "Torch Of Freedom", and "Freedom Movements".

Various — Studio One Rockers ... CD
Soul Jazz/Studio One (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $18.99
An excellent compilation that's very much in the spirit of the 100% Dynamite sets on Soul Jazz! This time, Soul Jazz dig through the vaults of the legendary Studio One catalog – some of the most important reggae and rocksteady ever recorded, virtually all of it produced under the tutelage of Clement "Coxone" Dodd. Much of this material has been floating around over the years, but we'd be hard pressed to think of a better collection of it – especially when considering the excellent fidelity of the set, which is way better than an of Dodd's own reissues of the material. Plus, the folks at Soul Jazz have gone out of their way to put together the tracks as an extremely well-thought out introduction to the music, not just a scattered batch of tunes that happened to be available. The set also includes a recent interview with Clement Dodd, plus loads of great rocksteady and early reggae tracks. Titles include "Surfin" by Ernest Ranglin, "Real Rock" by Sound Dimension, "Feel Like Jumping" by Marcia Griffiths, "Greedy G" by Brentford All Stars, "Village Soul" by Lennie Hibbert, "Ethiopia" by Cedric Brooks, "Crabwalking" by Prince Jazzbo, "Hot Milk" by Jackie Mittoo, "Badder Dan Dem" by Lone Ranger, and "Bobby Bobylon" by Freddy McGregor.
