Various — La Guepe Vol 2 – Deep Inside The French Library Music (Soul, Jazz, Funk, Afro, & Easy Tracks From The Vault) ... CD
Dare Dare/Pulp Flavor (France), 1999. New Copy .... $11.99
Excellent lost funk tracks from the French studio scene of the 70s! We've never seen any of these on the original vinyl – and just about every cut is culled from a rare French jazz, soundtrack, or instrumental LP! There's a whopping 17 tracks in all, and the groove ranges from Blacksploitation funky to breakbeat moog to De Wolfe groovy – with lots of other grooves in between. Cuts include "Slag Machine" by Patrick Abrial, "Happy Smith" by Michel Gonet, "Exciting Mrs. Brown" by April Orchestra, "Coulc Ah!" by Francois Rolland, "Generique" by Philippe Sarde, "Aerospatial" by Janko Nilovic, "Afro-Disiac" by Bernard Estardy, and "Kiss This" by Claude Denjean. Lots more grooviness, and a very nice package that's filled with cuts we've never heard before!

Various — Mojo Club Presents Dancefloor Jazz Vol 7 – Give Me Your Love ... CD
Motor (Germany), 1960s/1970s. New Copy .... $13.99
A killer set in the fantastic Mojo club series – a stellar mix of soul, jazz, fusion, and Brazilian tracks – all wrapped into a groovy tracklist that makes each of the rare tunes sound even more wonderful together! As with other volumes, there's a boundary-less nature to the work here – as the music is not just from a few different decades, but also spans both sides of the Atlantic, and the equator – making for nearly a globe's worth of wonderful tunes! Cuts include "Give Me Your Love" by The Sisters Love, "Wouri" by Manu Dibango, "Maracaibo" by Michel Legrand, "Take Us Down To The River" by Michael Naura, "Sambao" by Walter Wanderley, "Roots" by Willie Bobo, "Soul Soul Soul" by Wild Magnolias, "Mundo Deserto" by Elis Regina, "Calypso Blues" by Marvin Gaye, "In Memory Of" by Randy Weston, and the great "El Soul Condor" by Certain Lions & Tigers.

Various — Best Of Society Hill Records – My Magic Is Real ... CD
Society Hill/Hot, Early 80s. Used .... $6.99
Excellent lost modern soul from Philly – most of it recorded during the early 80s, when the bigger labels were losing their groove, and the torch was passed onto some of the city's smaller imprints. The set's got a nice mix of mellow modern soul and 80s dancefloor groovers – and all titles were produced by Butch Ingram. Titles include "Lost In Love" by Michelle Gold, "(Joy) I Know It" by Odyssey, "Tell Me Tell Me Tell Me" by Marki, "You Broke Your Promise" by Edmond Daniels, "Still Loving You" by Brandi Wells, "Never Too Late" by Julius Brown, "You Wear Me Out" by The Sigma Sweethearts, "Since You've Gone" by Booker Newberry, "Say That You Will" by Butch Sam, "Mr Man" by Alectra, "My Magic Is Real" by Blue Magic, "I Believe In Love" by Major Harris, and Barbara Mason's bizarre "Another Man", the nail in the coffin to the Barbara/Shirley song cycle!

Various — Soul Sides Volume 2 – The Covers ... CD
Zealous/Velour, 1970s. Used .... $6.99
A motherlode of funky soul covers – pulled together from obscure sources as part of the great Soul Sides series! The names of the songs here are all familiar, but most of the versions are not – remakes of soul, rock, and pop tunes by a variety of artists, mostly from the 70s – many of whom take the music into even funkier territory than the originals! Compiler Oliver Wang really knows his thing with a set like this – and his care in putting the package together makes the volume way more than just a typical soul compilation – thanks to plenty of funky nuggets that should appeal to most of the crate diggers, plus lots of familiar lyrics that have an appeal to the less initiated. Titles include "Kissing My Love" by Spanky Wilson", "Fever" by Sharon Cash, "Feelin Alright" by West Coast Revival, "Home Is Where The Hatred Is" by Esther Phillips, "Here I Am" by Marcia Griffiths, "Che Che Cole" by Antibalas, "Be Thankful For What You Got" by Donovan Carless, "It's Your Thing" by Cold Grits, "Let's Straighten It Out" by OV Wright, "Express Yourself" by Byron Lee, and "Viva Tirado" by Los Mozambiques. CD features the bonus tracks "What A Man" by Laura Lee and "Walk On By" by El Michels Affair.

Various — Wants List 2 – Another 18 Soulful Rare Grooves ... CD
Soul Brother (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $16.99
An amazing collection of funky nuggets – one that's overflowing with hip soul, funk, and break tracks! The set's the second in a series put together by the staff of London's Soul Brother Records – and like the first, it features some of the most sought-after rare grooves and sample tracks from the 70s – a rich array of titles from a variety of different labels, all collected with a keen ear for the older tracks that are still breaking big well into the 21st Century! And since these guys also run a record store themselves, they've gone way past the obvious – and have chosen an all-essential batch of tunes that aren't easily available on the market, including some killer tracks from major labels that we've been waiting years to see reissued. Titles include "Oops Here I Go Again" by Edna Wright, "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little Bit More" by Kellee Patterson, "Sho Nuff" by Sly Slick & Wicked, "All I Want Is You" by Four Flights, "Live For Love" by GC Cameron, "I Feel So At Home Here" by Michelle Wiley, "Shake It Up" by The Vibrations, "My Music" by Samuel Jonathan Johnson, "Heaven" by Ruth Copeland, "It's Got To Be Mellow (1976)" by Leon Mellow, "Making Room For Love" by Alton McClain & Destiny, and "When We're Makin Love" by Denise LaSalle.

Various — Wants List 3 – 17 Classic, In-Demand & Soulful Rare Grooves ... CD
Soul Brother (UK), 1970s. New Copy .... $16.99
Sublime 70s soul all the way through – a tremendous collection of mellow groovers and midtempo steppers – quite possibly the best volume so far in the Wants List series! The cuts here are all wrapped around a really unified groove – that 70s style that was never too funky, nor too uptempo – just nicely laidback and warm, yet still with a bubbling, gentle sort of rhythm. Production is full on most tracks, but there's always a great edge in the vocals – and although many of the artists here are bigger names, the cuts on the set (as you might guess from the title!) represent some of their more obscure tracks from the decade! Titles include "Lovely Lady" by Vernon Burch, "Trying To Get Next To You" by Arnold Blair, "If I Can't Stop You" by CB Overton, "Is This Really Love" by Charles Drain, "Show Me The Way To Love" by Carl Davis & The Chi-Sound Orchestra, "Midnight Lovers" by Passion, "Smother Me With Your Love" by Betty Wright, "The Rub" by George & Gwen McCrae, "Feed Me your Love" by The Fatback Band, "Harder & Harder" by Archie Bell, "The Man In The Street" by William Bell, "Sweet Music Soft Lights & You" by Ken Williams, "Wondering" by Betty Everett, "Electrified Love" by Ernie Hines, and "Feel Good" by Michelle Wiley.
