new Ann Margret/Marty Paich — Songs From The Swinger & Other Swingin Songs ... LP
RCA, 1966. Very Good+ .... $44.99
Ann-Margret at her grooviest – singing the super-groovy theme from The Swinger – perhaps her greatest film appearance ever! There's a mod bounce to the album that goes way way beyond any of Ann's other albums of the period – thanks to arrangements from Marty Paich, Quincy Jones, and Johnny Williams – all of whom put a nice sort of lilt in the backings, and manage to capture Ann at her sexiest. The title tune "The Swinger" is worth the price of entry itself – as it's a catchy, guitar-twanging number delivered in an incredibly breathy mode – supported by 2 great instrumentals from the film as well, "Swinger's Holiday" and "Kelly's Dance". But even on more conventional numbers, Ann's got a great sound here – bringing whole new sexy life to tracks that include "I Wanna Be Loved", "By Myself", "I Just Want To Make Love To You", "More", and "Cute".

George Duning — World Of Suzie Wong (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Kritzerland, 1960. New Copy .... $19.99
A strange film, but a great soundtrack! George Duning came up with an excellent batch of jazzy tracks for the film – and most of them swing hard and tightly, with strong jazzy solos, in a manner that's similar to some of Henry Mancini's best scores of the late 50s. A number of tracks have odd "Eastern" touches in the melody – mostly through the use of percussion – and this makes the jazzy tracks even nicer, and gives them a strange feel that's similar to some of the "east meets jazz" albums on Verve during the 60s. Titles include "Aberdeen Caper", "Gwenny Lee", "At The Namcock", "Groove For Suzie", and "Hit The Road To Dreamland" – and this great CD version features 29 tracks in all, with lots of rare bonus tracks!

Barry Gray — Space 1999 ... LP
RCA, 1976. New Copy (reissue).... $9.99
One of Barry Gray's greatest moments – the ultra groovy soundtrack for Space 1999, the short-lived but well-remembered mainstream sci-fi show from the 70s! The title theme has a nice bit of a dancefloor bounce to it – pre-guessing the disco-copy mode that other space soundtracks were facing in the 70s by turning out its own original hit – and other tunes in the set follow a sometimes similar mode that makes the record far funkier than you'd guess for a soundtrack of this type! Some tracks are certainly more straightforward and dramatic, but there's plenty here in that funky Brit Easy mode of the mid 70s – lots of compressed instrumentation and some slight electronic touches – and often rhythms that are a lot harder than you'd expect! Highlights include "Breakaway", "Death's Other Dominion", "Black Sun", and a reprise of the theme.

Harley Hatcher — Wild Wheels ... LP
RCA, 1969. Very Good+ .... $3.99
A weird batch of folksy rock tunes – composed and produced by Harley Hatcher for Sidewalk Enterprises, and sounding a lot more like a Sidewalk or Tower soundtrack than something on RCA. The groups are the usual obscurities that would show up on a Mike Curb soundtrack – pictured on the back cover, but still leaving us to wonder if they really existed at all. Tracks include "Holiday Rider" by The Saturday Revue, "Jailer Let Me Go Home" and "A Hurt In My Heart" by Don Epperson, "Playin Hard To Get" by Billie & Blue, and "Wine Women & Song" by Terry Stafford.
(Cover has some wear, with partially split top and bottom seams.)

Quincy Jones/Jose Feliciano — Mackenna's Gold ... LP
RCA, 1969. Near Mint- .... $6.99
A western soundtrack – but one that's groovier than you might expect, given that the music was done by Quincy and Jose! The general style is strings and western themes, but Quincy manages to put a bit of bounce at the bottom – using an electric bass in a syncopated style that's quite different from your average western score, and which gives a couple of tracks a nice gliding easy feel that sounds like some of Mancini's best in the early 70s. Jose sings the tune "Ole Turkey Buzzard" in both English and Spanish – and the tune itself is a pretty nice little number! Other tracks include "Soul Full Of Gold", "Waterhole Trek", "Massacre Montage", and "Apache Camp".

Galt MacDermot — Hair – Original Broadway Cast Recording ... LP
RCA, 1968. Very Good+ .... $1.99
One of the most influential musical moments of the 60s – Hair! Hair not only forever changed the concept of musical theater on Broadway, but it also gave the world an incredible array of groovy tunes with odd rhythms – and made a place for composer Galt MacDermot to continue his musical experiments for years to come – eventually influencing a generation of beatheads and hip hoppers as a result! This package features the official Broadway recording of the score – with singers who include Ronnie Dyson, Diane Keaton, and Melba Moore! Titles include "Aquarius", "Where Do I Go", "My Conviction", "Frank Mills", "Be In", "Abie Baby", "Colored Spade", and "Air".

new Henry Mancini — Hatari ... LP
RCA, 1962. Very Good .... $1.99
Mancini's light lilting groovy score to this flop of a film by Howard Hawks! Again, the score is better remembered than the film – probably because it gave the world the great cut "Baby Elephant Walk", a goofy little number that still gets churned up a lot today. There's lots of other nice bits like that one on here, including "Big Band Bwana", "Night Side", "Crocodile Go Home", and "Theme From Hatari".
(Black label stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear, with some staining on the back.)

Henry Mancini — Pink Panther – Original Soundtrack ... LP
RCA, 1963. Very Good- .... $9.99
Sure, you've heard it a million times – but it's still a fantastic soundtrack! Mancini's whimsical scoring was a perfect touch for this classic Peter Sellers film – and it's made even better by the LA group of musicians who play the music, including Plas Johnson, Pete Jolly, Shelly Manne, Jack Sheldon, and Larry Bunker. The "Pink Panther Theme" should be familiar enough to you, but there's loads of other nice numbers – like "Something For Sellers", "Piano & Strings", "The Village Inn", "The Tiber Tiwst", and "Cortina". Lots of jaunty jazz numbers – with clever breakaway solos in the Mancini mode!
(Black label mono pressing. Cover has some light wear.)

Ennio Morricone — Svegliati E Uccidi ... CD
RCA/GDM (Italy), 1966. New Copy .... $14.99
Early darkness from Ennio Morricone – an obscure mid 60s action thriller that combines boldly driving numbers with other tunes that slip into some of the spareness of his work for westerns! The work here is as mod and cool as you might guess from the cover – a bit more in a conventional 60s soundtrack mode, but still touches with great inflections on the woodwinds, and undercut by plenty of great lines on electric bass, guitar, and organ – all used sparingly but really effectively against the larger orchestrations! Tracks are often short, but really evocative – given a nice punch by Bruno Nicolai, who conducted the orchestra for the recording. A few tunes feature vocals by I Cantori Moderni – and titles include "Una Stanza Vuota", "Un Uomo Solo", "Colpo Alla Gioielleria", "La Prima Vittima", "Sul Lago Di Lugano", and "Una Tromba A Dallas". This fab reissue is filled with bonus tracks too – a total of 26 numbers in all!

Stanley Myers — Ulysses ... LP
RCA, 1967. Very Good .... $3.99
A very nice soundtrack for this obscure film loosely based on the novel by Joyce – clearly a tough task, given the scope of the original book! Myers' score is suitably crazy – with a strange array of orchestral pieces, moving in and out in a "suite" format, and sounding a lot like a Nino Rota soundtrack overall – with plenty of playfully instrumental moments. Titles include "Proteus", "Nestor", "Circe", and "Ithaca".
(Spine has a spot of old tape & a small rip. Back cover has WGN library letters.)

Gene Page — Blacula ... CD
RCA/Rev-Ola (UK), 1972. New Copy .... $13.99
Deadlier than Dracula – and a lot funkier too! This is the original soundtrack for the classic blacksploitation horror flick starring the baaadest Drac ever to grace the screen of all those shabby downtown theaters that were still around in the 70s – a wicked batch of wah wah tunes penned by Gene Page – and featuring a lot of groovy keyboards as well! The set's got a few vocal numbers, sung by 21st Century Ltd and The Hues Corporation, but it's the instrumentals that really steal the show– and there's plenty of great ones here that rank with the best blacksploitation work of the decade – hard and funky groovers that have kept this one flying out of the crates for many many years. Titles include Blacula (The Stalk Walk)", "Blacula Strikes!", "Heavy Changes", "Movin'", "Run Tina Run!", "Firebombs", "I'm Gonna Catch You", "Finding Love, Losing Love" and "Good To The Last Drop".

new Stanley Wilson — Music From M Squad ... LP
RCA, 1959. Very Good .... $6.99
Stanley Wilson conducted the music to this 50s cop show called M-Squad, but the music was composed by him, Count Basie, and Benny Carter. Carter plays with the group, which also includes Red Mitchell, Pete Candoli, Frank Rosolino, and John Williams – and he's the only reed player, which gives his solos a nice prominence. The sound of the music is mostly 50s crime, with a few dramatic themes thrown in. Most of the cuts are fairly jazzy, including "M Squad Theme", "The Chase", "Phantom Raiders", and "The Juke Box".

new Oscar Brown Jr, Sivuca, & Jean Pace — Joy ... LP
RCA, 1970. Used .... $3.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Oscar Brown's score for a hip play that he wrote (one of his many plays!) – performed by him, Sivuca, and Jean Pace. Despite the "show" quality of the material, this actually stands simply as a great Oscar Brown Jr. LP, and the production is nice and intimate, and sounds just like an ordinary studio album. Sivuca's great, and his breathy voice and playing really open up Oscar Brown with some great Brazilian touches. And as usual, the writing's great, especially on tracks like "Brown Baby", "Mother Africa's Day", "Funky World", and the great version of "Afro Blue", featuring Oscar's classic lyrics. Also features a wonderful version of Johnny Alf's "Sky & Sea" – done by Sivuca with an incredible lilting groove!

new Galt MacDermot — Hair – Original Movie Soundtrack ... LP
RCA, 1979. Used 2LP Gatefold .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A surprisingly great little soundtrack for the film version of Hair – re-arranged and musically directed by Galt MacDermot himself! There's a smoother, slicker feel to the tunes than heard on the Broadway soundtrack – with lots of nice 70s electric touches, and, if anything, a refinement of Galt's spacious approach to rhythms. There's more than a bit of funk on the set, and musicians in the group include Bernard Purdie, Wilbur Bascomb, Cornell Dupree, and Galt himself! 2LPs worth of tracks, and titles include "I Got Life", "Party Music", "Aquarius", "Sodomy", "Manchester", "Colored Spade", "Air", "I'm Black/Ain't Got No", "Where Do I Go", "Black Boys", "Walking In Space", "Easy To Be Hard", "Good Morning Sunshine", and "What A Piece Of Work Is Man".

new Henry Mancini — Party ... LP
RCA, 1968. Used .... $18.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great Mancini score for one of the goofiest films of the 60s! Peter Sellers stars as the sitar-playing Indian actor Hrundi Bakshi – next to the lovely Claudine Longet, who makes one of her few film appearances – and the whole thing's set to one of the greatest scores ever by Henry Mancini! The tunes are very groovy – with a few chorus vocal numbers, and some other wonderful tracks that mix together bits of sitar, guitar, and horn blasts – creating a very lively instrumental groove. Plus, the music is played by a tight group of LA jazzmen, including Shelly Manne, Plas Johnson, Jimmy Rowles, and Jack Sheldon. Titles include instrumental and chorus versions of "Nothing To Lose", plus "Chicken Little Was Right", "Birdie Num Num", "Party Poop", "Wiggy", and "Brunette In Yellow". Swingin!

new David Raksin — Laura (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Kritzerland, 1944. New Copy .... $19.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Without a doubt, one of the most famous scores to come out of Hollywood in the 40s – David Raksin's enduring soundtrack for Laura – and it's as beautiful now as ever! The theme was recorded time and time again over the next few decades – in vocal and instrumental versions, by hundreds of artists. The entire score is wonderful though – and mighty influential, too! It's lush and lovely, with noirish touches – seemingly serving as a template for so many dramatic scores to come! Includes the main title theme plus "The Phonograph", "The Café", "Waldo Walks Away", "Mark", "Apartment House", "The Party", "Laura Leaves", "Night" and more. This great CD version on Kritzerland includes full original score – plus the a bonus test demo fand also presents the full "Laura Suite – Theme And Variations" by Raksin, conducted by Alfred Newman, and runs over 27 minutes long!

new Burt Bacharach — Together? – Original Soundtrack Recording (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1979. New Copy .... $28.99 Out Of Stock
A lost Burt Bacharach treasure – a bit later than classic vintage, but a wonderful album from the mature maestro – and sometimes overlooked, due to its status as a soundtrack! The work here is totally great – that mellow, easy-flowing style that Burt really perfected around the time of Living Together – served up here in a batch of sweet instrumental tracks, plus a few key vocal numbers with lyrics sung by Jackie DeShannon, Libby Titus, and Michael McDonald – all of whom slide down more into the Bacharach ethos than stand out as their usual selves – and we mean that in a good way! Titles include "I Don't Need You Any More", "In Tune", "If We Ever Get Out Of Here", "On The Beach", "I've Got My Mind Made Up", "Find Love", "Luisa", and "I Think I'm Gonna Fall In Love".

new Chico Buarque & Ennio Morricone — Per Un Pugno Di Samba ... CD
RCA/BMG (Brazil), 1970. New Copy .... $18.99 Out Of Stock
An amazing record – one that stands as one of Chico Buarque's greatest from the 70s! The set was recorded in Italy in 1970 – and features Chico singing lead vocals over backings handled by Ennio Morricone – all in a style that's a perfect blend of MPB with the best elements of the Italian scene of the time! The songs are all originals written by Chico – and have a light and dreamy samba/bossa feel, one that's inflected by the off-beat orchestral style of Morricone, and supported by vocals from I Cantori Moderni. The feel is halfway between Chico's work on RGE and some of the dreamier Morricone soundtracks of the time – and it's a wonderful thing to have a strong male lead vocal over backings from Morricone – a really rare thing for the time, with results that are tremendous. Titles include "Rotativa", "Samba E Amore", "Nicanor", "Tu Sei Una Di Noi", "In Te", "Ed Ora Dico Sul Serio", and "Quete E Quelle".

Franceso De Masi — Concerto Per Pistola Solista (The Story Of A Crime) ... CD
CAM (Italy), 1970. Used .... $11.99
A wonderfully complicated soundtrack – one with many moods, and some really great work overall! The set starts out a bit strangely – pushing the "concerto" aspect with some overly-dramatic classically-styled themes – but as the work unfolds, a range of different influences come into play – including some jazzier themes, some sparer instrumental ones, and a few really nice lighter and groovy numbers that almost have a love comedy sort of approach – one that's much more in keeping with the 1970 date of the film! Instrumentation on these gets nicely electrified, and titles include "Tema Di Barbara", "Seduzione E Incubo", "Sweet Barbara", "Thorpe Overture", "Isabel & Tom", "Cercando Un Fantasma", "90 Miles To London", "Good Night Anthony", and "Georgy & Mamie".

George Duning/Henry Mancini — Dear Brigitte/Mr Hobbs Takes A Vacation (with bonus tracks) ... CD
20th Century/Kritzerland, 1962/1965. New Copy .... $19.99
Two different Jimmy Stewart comedy soundtracks from the 60s – both of them nice! First up is Dear Brigitte – an overlooked 1965 score by George Duning – done with a mix of the playful modes you'd expect from the story, and some of those great deeper dramatic touches that Duning used in more serious soundtracks – a really rich mixing of modes with a sound that's much stronger than we expected! Titles include "On To BBs", "The Captain", "Magical Moment", "Puzzled Cap'n", "Hey Dad", "Is It A Trick", and "She Sank". Next is an even groovier record – a rare non RCA Henry Mancini soundtrack from the early 60s – the score to Mr Hobbs Takes A Vacation, done with all the best mix of jazz and groovy elements we love in classic Mancini! Instrumentation mixes a key electric guitar melody with some lighter touches on woodwinds – really getting the most out of the melody with some shifts in timing and tone, juxtaposed with a few numbers that are even more playful! Titles include "Barn Swallow", "Something For Lauri", "Cream Puff", "Up His Nose", "A Month Off", and "Rudders & Sails". CD features 39 tracks in all – including 7 bonus tracks from the Mancini score!

new Piero Umiliani — Piero Umiliani Deluxe Edition ... CD
Cinevox (Italy), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy .... $14.99 Just Sold Out!
A fab collection of classic soundtrack work from the legendary Piero Umiliani – pulled from his best film scores of the late 60s and early 70s! The collection really goes for the best side of the Umiliani groove – Piero's wonderful talent for mixing together breezy rhythms, jazzy inflections, and some occasional female vocals that are always delivered with a sweetly grooving style. A number of the tracks are ones that we've got on other CD reissues, but the overall package is a really nice one that makes familiar material really come alive anew – the kind of Mondo Morricone approach that Umiliani's never gotten before! 18 tracks in all, including a few previously unreleased tracks – titles that include "L'Arcangelo Suite", "Don't Ever Let Me Go (inst edit)", "Bob & Helen (new edit)", "Crystal", "Roy Colt & Winchester Jack (finale)", "Mah Na Mah Na", "Due Mafiosi Contro Goldginger", "Danza Primitiva", "I Due Marines", "5 Bambole Per La Luna D'Agosto", and "Un Posto Per Un Addio".

new Serge Gainsbourg/Michel Colombier — Le Pacha/Vidocq/Comment Trouvez Vous Ma Soeur? ... CD
Universal (France), 1964/1966/1968. New Copy .... $12.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Stunning sounds from the team of Serge Gainsbourg and Michel Colombier – and maybe the most perfect example of why Gainsbourg soundtracks can be so great! First up is the duo's fab music for the film Le Pacha – a wonderful blend of trippy touches and more subtle jazzy moments, plus bits of electric sitar and bassy funk – shifting effortlessly from track to track to create a mad melange of musical grooves! Cuts include the classic "Requiem Pour Un Con", which is a funky gem – plus "Psychastenie", "Joss A La Calvados", "Un Noel 67", "Cadavres En Serie", "Batucada Meurtriere", and Brigitte Bardot singing "Harley Davidson"! Next is Vidoq – a handful of songs originally penned for a TV series in the 60s, and very unusual work from Serge! The tunes include two very offbeat vocal numbers, sung in this deep-voiced style – plus a few more serious instrumentals, but with a weird twist. Titles include "Le Mariage De Vidocq", "A Vous De Jouer", "L'Evasion", and "Chanson Du Forcat". Comment Trouvez-Vous Ma Soeur – or "how do you find my sister?" – seems like a perfect title for a film to feature music from Serge – and the music definitely follows suit! The movie's from 1964, so captures that pivotal time when Gainsbourg was shifting from classier French styles to groovy ones – both modes featured here in the instrumentals directed by Colombier, and on Serge's vocal reading of the title tune. Tracks include "Erotico Tico", "No Love For Daddy", "La Course Au Mariage", "Rendez Vous A L'Eglise", "Surboum Chez Ma Soeur", and "Quart D'Heure Americain".

new Galt MacDermot/Jim Rado/Jerry Ragni — Disinhairited ... LP
RCA, Late 60s. Used Gatefold .... $0.99 Out Of Stock
A pretty great follow-up to the original Hair soundtrack – featuring tracks that were outtakes from the musical, presented here with notes, a cool gatefold package, and backings conducted by Galt MacDermot himself! The tracks are all pretty great – lots of them short and really messed up, a lot more down and dirty than the tracks that did make the musical, with subject matter that's a lot raunchier too. Not really that funky, but with plenty of nice moments – and vocalists that include Melba Moore and George Tipton. Titles include "Hello There", "I'm Hung", "Climax", "Washing The World", "Manhattan Beggar", "Exanaplanatooch", "One Thousand Year Old Man", "Dead End", "Mess O'Dirt", and "The Bed".

new Henry Mancini — Experiment In Terror ... CD
RCA (Spain), 1962. Used .... $5.99 Out Of Stock
A killer soundtrack from Henry Mancini – a record that's got both the terror promised in the title, and some sweeter moments that are pure Mancini all the way! Instrumentation is relatively jazzy overall – with some tight horn passages that shift between swinging saxes and lighter woodwind moments – a mixture of west coast cool and grittier elements that really does a nice job of marking the generation of the score. Players aren't listed, but we're betting they're some of Hank's hippest associates – and titles include "Flutter's Ball", "Kelly's Tune", "Tooty Twist", "Teen Age Hostage", "White On White", and "Down By The Wharf".
