Phyllis HymanCan't We Fall In Love Again (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Arista/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1981. New Copy .... $16.99
Phyllis Hyman's nicely balanced here between the two key sides of her early career at its best – working with straight soul production from Chuck Jackson, and slightly more complicated grooves handled by Norman Connors! The pair really bring a nice sense of balance to the record, and in a way the set may well be one of the deepest that Hyman cut during the 80s – a set that avoids some of the too-classy or too-contemporary modes that later held back her vocals a bit – and which instead goes for all the warmth and sensual soul that first made Phyllis rise to fame during the 70s! There's a gentle glow to the record that really shines through – a sense that even in the studio, working for a label like Arista, Phyllis Hyman could work with the same deep spirits as the more righteous albums of her youth. Titles include "Can't We Fall In Love Again", "I Ain't Asking For Your Love", "Sunshine In My Life", "Don't Tell Me, Tell Her", and "Just Another Face In The Crowd". CD also features 5 bonus tracks too – "You're The One", "In Between The Heartaches", "If You Ever Change Your Mind", "Sleep On It", and "I'm Not Asking You To Stay".

Phyllis HymanGoddess Of Love ... LP
Arista, 1983. Near Mint- .... $2.99
The last Arista album from Phyllis Hyman – and a set that really sums up all the genius she expressed at the label! Some tunes are upbeat and catchy – the kind of tracks that had Hyman reaching a much wider audience in the early 80s – while others are more sophisticated and mellow, the kind of all-woman tunes that made Phyllis a genre-defining artist that so many others tried to match in years to come! These latter tracks are our favorites, and are still the type that Hyman can do better than anyone else – couched here in perfect production for the mode by Thom Bell and Narada Michael Walden. Titles include "Why Did You Turn Me On", "Your Move My Heart", "Falling", "Riding The Tiger", "Goddess Of Love", "Just Twenty Five Miles To Anywhere", "Just Me & You", "We Should Be Lovers", and "Let Somebody Love You".
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has some wear, a crease on one corner, and a name in pen on front. Labels have some pen.)

Phyllis HymanIn Between The Heartaches – The Soul Of A Diva ... CD
Expansion (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy .... $16.99
Rare work by the late Phyllis Hyman – a killer collection of obscure sides from some of the best projects of her career, plus some additional titles that have never been issued before! In a world of endless "best of" collections of Phyllis' work, this set is a real gem – a package that truly understands the beauty of her music, and offers up obscure tracks to please longtime fans, but with a quality level that's equally great as – if not better than – any of her well-known studio LPs! The album's a dream come true to our ears – smooth, jazzy, sophisticated soul – sung by Phyllis in a timeless style, with help from a host of great jazz artists. Unreleased titles include "If You Ever Change Your Mind", "Hottest Love Around", "Don't Tell Me Tell Her (new version)", "Do You Love Him (fast version)", and "In Between The Heartaches" – and other tracks include "Love Surrounds Us Everywhere", "I'll Be Around", and "In Search Of My Heart", all with McCoy Tyner; "Sacred Kind Of Love", with Grover Washington; "Springs Arrival" with Jon Lucien; and "Everything I Have Is Good", with Pharoah Sanders & Norman Connors. The set's completed by tracks that include "Sleep On It", "Magic Mona", "Soon Come Again (extended)", and "Be One" – all from hard to find non-LP sources!

Phyllis HymanLiving All Alone ... CD
Philadelphia International, 1986. Used .... $15.99
Sparkling modern soul from the lovely Phyllis Hyman – and an album that has the singer picking up the wonderfully smooth groove that had become the Philly International sound of the mid 80s. This format works surprisingly well for Phyllis – quite possibly more so than it did even for longer-running artists on the label – as it gives her a great showcase for the more sophisticated and adult sort of themes that were really emerging in her music, the kind of classy soul that Hyman helped forge strongly at the time. Titles include the great numbers "Old Friend", "Ain't You Had Enough Love", "If You Want Me", "Living All Alone", and a nice version of "What You Won't Do For Love".

Phyllis HymanSomewhere In My Lifetime (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Arista/Cherry Red (UK), 1978. New Copy .... $13.99
Warm and wonderful work from Phyllis Hyman – a set that's a lot more mainstream soul than her music of a few years before, but she delivers it with a strong commitment to the more complicated styles of her roots! The sound here is full and proud – a nice extension of the work that Hyman did with Norman Connors, and not nearly as much in a disco mode as it might be, given the time of the release. And although many of the tracks are somewhat upbeat, they've got a bit more complication in the rhythms than conventional club – thanks to the presence of jazz players who include Herbie Hancock, Monty Alexander, Azar Lawrence, and others. The best production on the record is by T Life, and the team of Skip Scarborough and Larry Alexander – and titles include "Kiss You All Over", "Living Inside Your Love", "Soon Come Again", "Here's That Rainy Day", "So Strange", "Lookin For A Lovin", and "Be Careful (How You Treat My Love)". CD features some great bonus tracks too – including "Love Is Free", "Sing A Song", "Sweet Music", "Kiss You All Over (12" mix)", and "So Strange (12" mix)".

new Phyllis HymanYou Know How To Love Me (plus bonus track) ... CD
Arista, 1979. New Copy .... $5.99 6.99 Out Of Stock
A classic 1979 album from Phyllis Hyman! Hyman was one of the few female singers who started in the pre-disco years and managed to move through the disco years with a good groove – but never get totally swamped by the production styles of the day. She stuck close to her roots as a jazzy soul singer, and produced great albums like this – which mixed pop club grooves with more sophisticated arrangements, handled very well here by the production team of Reggie Lucas and James Mtume. Titles include the stormer "You Know How To Love Me", plus "Some Way", "Under Your Spell", "But I Love You", and "Give A Little More". CD also features the previously unreleased track "You're The One".

Regina Belle — All By Myself (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/FTG, 1987. New Copy .... $14.99 18.99
A sweet debut from soul singer Regina Belle – a nice dose of class and sophistication in the world of mid 80s R&B! Regina's got a well-developed style right from the start – the kind of poise that you might hear from someone like Phyllis Hyman, especially on the mellower cuts – with nice undercurrents of jazz that really help send the whole thing home – and really keep the album away from cloying commercial styles too! The set features some mighty nice instrumental elements alongside the vocals – including keyboards from Dexter Wansel and alto from Don Myrick – and titles include "Show Me The Way", "Intimate Relations", "Gotta Give It Up", "So Many Tears", "Please Be Mine", and "You Got The Love". CD features lots of bonus tracks – "Without You", "Show Me The Way (ext)", "You Got The Love (rmx)", "How Could You Do It To Me (rmx)", "So Many Tears (cool mix)", and "Show Me The Way (inst)".

Norman Connors — You Are My Starship ... LP
Buddah, 1976. Very Good .... $2.99
A masterpiece of mellow soul and jazzy grooves, with the heavenly title cut – "You Are My Starship" – which features Michael Henderson on vocals and Gary Bartz on sax! Bartz plays on a number of other cuts, too, including a remake of "The Creator Has a Master Plan", "Just Imagine", and a remake of "Betcha By Golly Wow", with Phyllis Hyman on vocals. Hyman also sings a duet with Michael Henderson on the track "We Both Need Each Other". Great stuff, and a groundbreaking LP that showed the world that Norman was going to make as big of a splash on the soul scene as he did in the jazz world!

Barbara Mason — Lady Love ... LP
Buddah, 1973. Very Good- .... $11.99
A pivotal album for Barbara Mason – one in which she takes the little girl soul sound of earlier albums, and turns it into a sophisticated range of emotions that foreshadows later Philly work by singers like Jean Carn and Phyllis Hyman! Despite the Philly arrangements by Ronnie Baker, Norman Harris, and Vince Montana, there's actually a bit of a southern twinge to the record – an aspect that works nicely on the ballad cuts, which have kind of an Ann Sexton or Shirley Brown feel to them – sophisticated female soul at its best, and a real change overall for Barbara. Features the uptempo extended political cut "World War Three", plus "All in Love is Fair", "Bed and Board", "Caught in The Middle", "I Miss You Gordon", and "Me & Mr. Jones", her cover of the Billy Paul hit, and a nice version too!
(Cover has some edge wear, and a small split on the bottom seam.)

new Paulette McWilliams — Never Been Here Before ... LP
Fantasy, 1977. Very Good .... $4.99
A sweet album of modern soul on Fantasy – with a sophsticated style that reminds us a bit of Phyllis Hyman in parts, especially on the album's mellower tracks. A few numbers are done in an uptempo groove – and Paulette's not really that great at these, as her subtle vocals tend to get a bit lost in the mix. But she's great on the midtempo numbers, most of which are done in a nice jazzy groove. Titles include "Give It Time", "Main Squeeze", "Chump Change", "I'll Never Make You Cry", and "Happy Song".

Mtume, Lucas, & Others — Best Of Mtume & Lucas ... CD
Expansion (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $16.99
Smooth and jazzy soul from the team of James Mtume and Reggie Lucas – two of the finest producers and arrangers in their field! The set brings together tracks recorded by the pair with a host of different artists across a host of different labels – offering for the first time a true picture of the genius of Mtume, and featuring a load of excellent cuts that are appearing on CD for the first time ever! Mtume himself cut a few famous albums on Columbia, some with Lucas, and together the pair worked across a variety of labels in the late 70s and early 80s – taking modern soul to the next level with a really top-shelf sound! The package is a 15-track monster, filled with loads of great tracks we're happy to have together – and titles include "Love Lock", "Closer I Get To You", and "Juicy Fruit" by Mtume; "Under Your Spell" and "You Know How To Love Me" by Phyllis Hyman, "Never Too Late For Your Lovin" and "Step In The Light" by Sunfire, "What Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin" by Stephanie Mills, "Got To Be Love" by The Spinners, "If I Had A Chance" by Rena Scott, "Back To You" and "Now Is The Time For Love" by Lou Rawls, "Keep Going On" by Gary Bartz, and "Two Hearts" by Stephanie Mills & Teddy Pendergrass.

Pharoah Sanders — Love Will Find A Way (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Arista/Big Break (UK), 1978. New Copy .... $14.99
A beautiful little record by Pharoah Sanders – quite different than most of his other recordings of the 70s, and done in a smoothly jazzy mode that also features plenty of soul! Sanders did the set in collaboration with Norman Connors – and the style is in that same great mix of mellow soul and deeper jazz that Connors used on his own brilliant records from the time. Instrumentation includes some keyboards and guitar mixed in with Sanders' always-soulful work on sax – and a number of cuts have vocals, either by a chorus shading in the tunes, or by Phyllis Hyman in the lead. The whole thing's great – warmly soulful, and almost a tighter extension of the modes that Sanders was exploring on his last album or two for Impulse. Titles include "As You Are", "Everything I Have Is Good", "Got To Give It Up", "Love Will Find a Way", "Love Is Here", and "Pharomba". CD features 2 bonus tracks – "As You Are (single version)" and "Got To Give It Up (single version)".

Various — Skip Scarborough Songbook ... CD
Expansion (UK), Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy .... $16.99
A pretty impressive testament to the songwriting of Skip Scarborough – a great compilations of soaringly soulful numbers he wrote from some of the best and biggest soul & R&B singers and groups of the late 70s onward! The set is pretty heavily weighted with numbers from the last couple years of the 70s, with a few from the 80s and later gem or 2 – songs by Earth Wind & Fire, Phyllis Hyman, Freda Payne, Syreeta, LTD, Creative Source, Bobby Humphrey, Patti Labelle, The Emotions and more. A good deal of it is in the somewhat laidback, yet purely soulful and sophisticated style – but his songwriting talent has quite a reach, from string-laden disco era dancefloor soul to boogie, tduets fodder and well beyond. A very well chosen set! Includes "Lover To Lover" by Maxi Anderson, "Earth Wind & Fire" by Earth Wind & Fire, "Funky Luvah" by Creative Source, "Tell Me Please" by Freda Payne, "Love Changes" by Mother's Finest, "Can't Hide Love" by Dionne Warwick, "Don't Ask My Neighbors" by The Emotions, "Dancin To Keep From Cryin" by Bobby Humphrey and more. 18 tracks in all.

Various — Smooth Grooves – Sophisticated 80s Philly Soul ... CD
Backbeats (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $9.99
Great tracks from the second generation of Philadelphia International – that time when the label moved past the clubby Philly sounds that had won them big hits in the 70s – into an even deeper range of styles overall! Most of the tracks here have a wonderfully mature sort of feel – a move past easy dancefloor modes, into more complicated mellow steppers and midtempo rhythms that are perfect for the emotive, sensual lyrics of the tunes – most of which are performed by artists who were still the greatest working for the Pilly International label at the start of the 80s! Gems throughout – with great cuts that include "I'm In Love Again" by Patti Labelle, "Easy Easy Got To Take It Easy" by Teddy Pendergrass, "When I'm Gone" by The Jones Girls, "Mine All Mine" by The Stylistics, "Start The Fire" by Jean Carn, "I Can't Stop Turning You On" by Silk, "Set A Little Trap" by Phyllis Hyman, "So Glad I'm The One" by Instant Funk, "Yes You Need Love" by Anthony White, "Your Love Is Good" by Bunny Sigler, and "I've Been Pushed Aside" by McFadden & Whitehead.

new Angela Bofill — Angie (with bonus track) ... CD
Buddah/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1978. New Copy .... $13.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Angela Bofill's sublime first album – a mixture of jazzy soul and soulful jazz, all put together with a sound that's really a cut above most of her contemporaries! As with Jean Carn or Phyllis Hyman, there's a sophistication to Angela's sound here that indicates roots in much hipper territory that were still pulling strongly on her work for this mainstream set – a sound that runs deeper than you might expect for such a commercially successful record, and which has really kept it alive for years. Part of the strength of the set is the jazzy backings given the music – arranged by Dave Grusin, and carried off by himself on keyboards, with other players who include Eric Gale on guitar, Dave Valentin on reeds, Steve Gadd on drums, and Ralph MacDonald on percussion. There's a warmly glowing feel to the record that's neither slick or commercial – and titles include "Children Of The World United", "Summer Days", "Rough Times", "This Time I'll Be Sweeter", and "The Only Thing I Would Wish For". Includes a bonus track – the Arista single mix of "This Time I'll Be Sweeter".

new Norman Connors — You Are My Starship/Romantic Journey ... CD
Buddah/Expansion (UK), 1976/1977. New Copy .... $16.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of mellow soul and jazzy groove masterpieces by Norman Connors – You Are My Starship form '76 and Romantic Journey from '77 in a single set! The former opens with the heavenly title cut – which features Michael Henderson on vocals and Gary Bartz on sax. Romanic Journey is another mellow jazzy soul treasure The record is a beautiful blend of styles, and features vocals by Eleanore Mills and Phillip Mitchell – plus playing by Gary Bartz and Pharoah Sanders. Connors still has some of his jazz influences firmly in place, as you'll hear on the album's remake of Pharoah Sanders' "Thembi", taken in a mellow stepping tone, as well as a reading of Gato Barbieri's "Last Tango In Paris". Other tracks are more smooth soul oriented, and titles include "Destination Moon", "For You Everything", and "You Are Everything". 14 tracks in all.

new Fatback Band — Night Fever ... LP
Spring, 1976. Used .... $5.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
A key turn in the groove for The Fatback Band – one that has the group getting a good dose of "night fever", and smoothing out their funk for the 70s disco crowd! Yet although clubby, the record's still plenty funky – a refinement of the groove first started on Yum Yum, streamlined into a sweet blend of bass, drums, guitar, and plenty of horns – but all still with a sense of liveness and jamming that plenty shows the roots of the combo from the old days. A few tracks here have a nicely sweet soul sound – sometimes with backing vocals from Donna McGhee and Phyllis Hyman – and titles include "Night Fever", "A Little Funky Dance", "The Joint", "Disco Crazy", and "The Booty".

new Al Johnson — Back For More ... LP
Columbia, 1980. Used .... $4.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wonderful work by Al Johnson – one of the unsung heroes of mellow 70s soul, finally getting his shot on a major label after many years as a songwriter and arranger for other aritsts. Norman Connors brought Al to Columbia – and as he did with other talents in earlier years, like Phyllis Hyman and Michael Henderson, this sort of sponsorship gave Al a chance to reach a much larger audience. Even though the record was never a huge hit, it is an enduring soul classic that still has a lot of resonance today. It features Al's classic duet with Jean Carn on "I'm Back For More" – a cut that was recorded by other artists, but which has its best-known version here. Also features "I've Got My Second Wind" – which Al did on an earlier album of his own – plus "You Are My Personal Angel", and "Peaceful".
