A killer bit of female soul by a very short-lived group – one with a great sound that comes out of some real criss-crossing of styles – some deep soul currents, but some hipper modern soul touches at the top! The set was produced by Brad Shapiro, and has a good blend of his modern and southern styles of the mid 70s – similar to his work with Candi Staton – but it also features some impeccable arrangements from David Van DePitte, who gives the record a sweeping, swaying feel that buoys the vocals up on some really soulful backings. There's plenty to be proud of here – as the album's a key part in the reinvention of Deniece Williams for the 80s – a great way of finding a new setting for her wonderful voice, one that helped her reach a huge new audience in the process! Most of the backings have an 80s approach, but still hold onto some of the deeper warmth of the 70s – and if anything, they represent kind of a "leaning up" of Williams' earlier modes – one that still gives the record a nice bottom, yet also finds a great way of focusing her amazing vocal style. Instead, this one really digs deep – and comes up with rare 45s for a host of artists that we didn't even know recorded for De-Lite – obscure but great material that shows just how tied to the east coast scene the label was before it starting hitting the charts and the clubs!
