The wild first album from Bloodstone – a much trippier affair than some of the group's later work, as you might guess from the image on the cover! There's a really heavy vibe going on with some of the tracks here – almost an echo of psychedelic soul from the Norman Whitfield camp, with perhaps some of the fuzzy guitars of the Westbound scene too – all a very different change from the sweeter harmonies Bloodstone would drop later in the 70s still a bit rough around the edges here, but in a great way! The album's got plenty of appeal for fans of heavy funk, and there's a definite righteous undercurrent to the music – as you'll hear on tracks like "This Thing Is Heavy", "Dumb Dude", "Lady Of The Night", "Friendship", and "Take These Chains".

Brass Construction's fifth album, and the group's still grooving harder than most of their contemporaries! The legendary Randy Muller is still fully in charge here – serving up his trademark lean, mean arrangements that compress all elements of the music firmly on the beat – all in a way that creates one of the funkiest grooves you'll ever hear in mainstream late 70s club! There's plenty of great little touches to keep each tune interesting – bits of strings, keyboards, or other elements that burst out of the mix playfully . Titles include "It's Alright", "Watch Out", "I Want Some Action", "Right Place", "Music Makes You Feel Like Dancing", and "Shakit".

Here's where things really started getting interesting for James Brown! The album was issued right around the same time as James' single "Out Of Sight" on Smash – and like that track, "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" was one of the first to use that "instruments on the beat" style of funk that would dominate all of James' work in years to come – that amazing groove that completely turned soul music on its ear – and paved the way for generations to come! The result is a startling sound that forever changed the face of groove – and you'll hear it nicely placed on this album, along with great cuts like "Cross Firing", "Mashed Potatoes USA", "Doin The Limbo", and "Love Don't Love Nobody".

The genius of Leroy Burgess knows no bounds – as you'll hear on this fantastic set of rare club tracks! Leroy first got his start in the group Black Ivory, but by the end of the 70s he'd left the ensemble to become a producer – working on their own work, as well as records by a host of excellent underground club acts on the east coast. Burgess had a wonderful approach to the music – taking enough of a groove from disco to keep things moving, but using his roots in soul to keep things real. Warm and soulful groovers throughout – with titles that include "Let's Do It" and "Sweet Thing" by Convertion, "Over Like A Fat Rat" by Fonda Rae, "Mainline" and "Hustlin" by Black Ivory, "You Dazzle Me" by Dazzle, "Summertime" by High Frequency, "Fly Girl" by Intrique, "Weekend" by Class Action, "You Can Do It" by Dino Terrell, and "100%" by Caprice.

An amazing full length collection of work from Rickey Calloway – an artist we've really only known from individual singles, but one who packs a hell of a punch in the space of this rock-solid CD! Rickey's groove is right out of the James Brown camp of the glory days – tight tight tight instrumentation, filled with lots of riffing grooves that are right on the beat – topped with Rickey's amazing vocals, which feel like they're lifted from some obscure funky 45s from back in the day! Production is nice and raw on most numbers and there's a few mellower deep soul tracks which help round out the sound wonderfully – giving the set the full scope you might normally expect to hear from Lee Fields. The packaging on this one's a bit slim, but the music's totally great – and the set features 16 killer cuts that include "Tell Me", "Lose It", "Shed A Tear", "Groove Master", "Get The Groove", "That's The Way", "Paying My Dues", "Get It Right", "A Letter", "I'm In Love", and "The Feeling".

The cover's a bit weak, but the music is mighty strong – a killer collection of James Carr's 60s Memphis soul for the Goldwax! As you'll hear right from the start, Carr had a quality level that easily rivaled greats like Otis Redding or Wilson Pickett – whether on the kind of heartbreaking ballads that fans always love, or on the harder-edged numbers that we especially love in James' music! The whole thing feels like an expanded set of 60s classics from Stax Records – and titles include "She's Better Than You", "Let It Happen", "Adorable One", "There Goes My Usta Be", "A Woman Is A Man's Best Friend", "Love Attack", "These Ain't Raindrops", and "I'm A Fool For You".

A massively wonderful album from Dayton – an album that has the group really getting their groove together – still sticking a bit in the older funk mode from the past, but also bringing in some warmer, deeper touches to their music too! There's a solidness here that's undeniable – a balance of rhythms and instrumentation that few other soul groups of the time were hitting – topped by vocals that have a nice dose of jazz in the mix too, with the sort of sophistication you might expect to hear from some of Wayne Henderson's At Home productions. Production is nice and warm, never too cold or commercial – and titles include the group's great cut "The Sound Of Music" – not the theme from the Broadway show, but a great two-stepper that's instantly infectious – plus "Caught In The Middle", "It Must Be Love", "Promise Me", and "Lookin Up".

Sweet funky jazz from the 70s! Gonzalez were an obscure UK combo – probably known a lot better over in England, but pretty darn hard to find over here in America – and they've got a tight style that reminds us of some of the more well-produced jazz funk coming out on labels like Blue Note or Blue Thumb during the mid 70s. Some cuts have vocals, but most of the record's instrumental – and it's filled with great guitars, and some excellent sax work that goes way past the usual funky tenor line! The groove's a nicely sophisticated blend of jazz funk and modern soul – with the kind of groove that you might expect to hear on some of the Capitol Rare compilations. The CD brings together cuts from the group's first album Gonzalez, plus a few more from the album Our Only Weapon Is Our Music. Titles include "Pack It Up", "Funky Frith Street", "Saoco", "Ahwai Five-O", "Rissoled", and "Adelanto Nightride". Very nice – and the kind of group we love to discover!

The first-ever tribute to this overlooked genius of southern soul – a set that brings together the rare early 70s singles from Dan Greer, plus a huge amount of unreleased work as well! Dan recorded these cuts for the Sounds Of Memphis label, in a style that really shows the changes in southern soul taking place at the time – that rich move forward you'd hear in the music of Sam Dees, Jimmy Lewis, and other key contemporaries who, along with Greer, really helped shake free of some of the 60s cliches of the genre – and stepped forth strongly with a sense of pride and power that's really amazing! The music's definitely got a Memphis vibe, but also echoes a bit of Nashville and Jackson soul as well – and Greer's slight lyrical twang is a really great fit for the slight bite in the way he puts his songs together. Titles include "Hook Line & Singer", "Shell Of A Man", "Thanks To You Girl", "How Does It Feel", "Bless You", "Voodoo Woman", "Share", "So Good To Be Young", "Any Moment Now", "Natural Reaction", "Only The Beginning", and "I'm A Lucky Guy".

Beautiful brown-eyed soul from the Ohio scene of the 70s – just the sort of record you might have expected to hear from East LA or Spanish Harlem back in the day – but even more amazing to come from Cleveland! The group are a Latin combo at the core, but they've soaked up plenty of soul influences from the late 60s and early 70s – bringing in bits of harmony soul, funk, and other hip touches to really expand their groove – in ways that are similar to the changes Joe Bataan and his contemporaries were going through at the time! There's a few funky instrumentals that get nicely tripped out, offset with some wonderful mellow soul numbers, and a few straighter Latin bits – all of which show a really amazing range for the group. As usual, Numero does a great job of bringing their whole story to light through the great notes – but even without them, we're plenty happy with the music on the set! Titles include "Loving You", "To Be Sure", "Here We Go Again", "Cold Wine", "Trivialities", "Just Call Me", and "Listen People".

Insanely great sounds from the legendary Tim Maia – easily the most soulful singer in 70s Brazil, and an artist with a heck of a strong ear for funk, too! The music here is an incredible hybrid of American soul and Brazilian elements – especially since some lyrics are in English – and the grooves are often mixed together in a sound that's nice and fuzzy around the edges, with some slight psychedelic elements that makes the cuts a perfect fit for this Luaka Bop series! Yet Tim Maia's hardly a guy who can easily fit into any easy slot or series – because as you'll hear on this set, he's got a vibe that's all his own – a really wonderful approach that's different even from some of his hippest contemporaries in Brazil – and which has gone onto have influence on countless other generations of singers and musicians – including his nephew Ed Motta. The package is great – a real visual tribute to the sounds within – and titles include "Que Beleza", "Ela Partiu", "Do Leme Ao Pontal", "Brother Father Mother Sister", "Quer Queira Quer Nao Queira", "Let's Have A Ball Tonight", "I Don't Care", "The Dance Is Over", "Rational Culture", "You Don't Know What I Know", and "Nobody Can Live Forever".

An overlooked set from Melba Moore – an Epic session from the start of the 80s, and one that's served up with a nicely understated groove! There's a bit of disco in the mix, but the sound's never too far over the top – and in a way, Melba's working in the same sophisticated territory as some of the Philly International singers of the same generation – moving past easy club or chart soul, into a well-rounded, fully mature mix of music. Given the great vocals that Moore's always brought to her music, the format is a great way for her to keep on growing – as you'll hear on titles that include "Closer", "Something On Your Mind", "Shame", "Next To You", "Rest Inside My Love", and "Never Gonna Let You Get Away". CD features four bonus tracks – "You Stepped Into My Life (7" mix)", "Pick Me Up I'll Dance (7" mix)", "Burn (special disco mix)", and "Night People (12" mix)".

Way more than just another soul group – as The New Birth are almost big enough to be their own sort of soul music village – complete with different neighborhoods along the way! Vocals are handled by the combined groups of The Mint Juleps and Now Sound – gals and guys that soar together wonderfully with backings from The Nite-Liters – who help give the record a righteous undercurrent at most points, which makes the whole thing sound way hipper than any other projects of this nature! Vernon Bulllock acts as the music director for the whole group – really pulling things together with a tightness that's outta sight – and leadership of the project comes from Harvey Fuqua – who arranged and produced as well. There's some massively heavy talent on board for this initial outing, and you can definitely hear it all come into play beautifully – a wonderful harmony of rich talents, without any egos or issues to get in the way. Vocals chance nicely throughout – sometimes a female lead, sometimes male – as do the grooves, which are funky one minute, and mellow the next! Tracks include "All The Way", "Pretty Words Don't Mean A Thing", "One Way Bus", "It's You Or No One", "Do The Funky Chicken", "The Unh Song", and "What'll I Do". Great reissue – with excellent sound, and very detailed notes!

One of the coolest, grooviest cats who ever cut a record – an an artist with a really unique conception at the time of these recordings! Roy Porter got his start as a drummer during the bebop years, and worked hard on the LA scene of the R&B and soul scenes of the 50s and 60s – but to us, his crowning achievement is these amazing funk sides of the early 70s – amazingly complex, but right on the money too – and a whole new kind of music that's impossible to describe in words! Roy mixes funky drums with lots of cool jazzy changes – keyboard lines, horn parts, and bass bits that have the frenzy you might find in fusion, yet come across with the down-to-earth vibe of a funky 45 – a killer blend that goes way past jazz, and even most straight funk too – as you'll hear in this sweet little set. The package brings together all the best tracks from these key Porter years – and titles include "Jessica" and "Panama" in both vocal and instrumental versions, plus "Wow", "Funny Feelin", "Funky Twitch", "Love You", "Hense Forth", "Out On The Town Tonight", "Givin Me The Blues", "Waver-ing", "Party Time", and "Hip City".

Amazing sounds from Ram Jam Holder – an artist unlike anyone else we can think of! Black London Blues is a brilliant British set from Holder – not really blues at all, but a cool kind of crossbreeding of styles in the 60s London scene – almost the same mad mix of modes you might hear in The Equals! There's plenty of funk on the record – some great drums, bouncing basslines, and an overall tightness that's more gritty soul than blues – although there's definitely a bluesy bent at times too! Titles include "Brixton Blues", "Too Much Blues", "Pub Crawling Blues", "Wimpy Bar Blues", and "Hampstead To Lose The Blues". Bootleg Blues has a groove that's really wonderful – definitely blues, but with lots of other elements mixing through the music too – kind of that criss-crossing of styles you'd find in San Francisco music of the late 60s – but given a particularly London twist here – with some folksy elements, soulful phrasing, and even some echoes of the mod 60s scene in the way the organ and grooves come across. The album's a great one – and titles include "Saturday's Child", "Bed Sitter Girl", "London Paris Rome Blues Express", "Freedom I'm Ready", and "Low Down In Paris".

Not just Jimmy Reed – as the album features work by Phil Upchurch on bass and Al Duncan on drums, plus some great uncredited organ too – but the album's still a great chance to hear the great one at all his stripped-down best! Jimmy really dominates on vocals and guitar, and some harmonica too – and most of the tunes have that seductively vamping style that made Reed's music such a huge influence on the 60s generation. Titles include "Good Lover", "Take It Slow", "Let's Get Together", "I'll Change That Too", "In The Morning", "Oh John", and "Back Home At Noon".

The complete Tamla and Motown singles of The Satintones – the soul, R&B & popular music juggernaut's first male vocal group – and a treasure trove of rare post doo wop from the end of the 50s/beginning of the 60s! It's fascinating for the history herein – the group is hugely under-anthologized in a world of myriad Motown compilations – which is a real shame, as you'll hear in this sweet set – with numbers that rely on the doo wop influences as well as tunes more devoted to lead vocals – with a slew of early Berry Gordy productions and compositions. The set includes the then legally challenged Shirelles knockoff/answer song "Tomorrow and Always" plus "Motor City", "Going To The Hop", "Sugar Daddy", "A Love That Can Never Be", "Foot Stomping Time", My Kind Of Love", "Boogie Woogie Heart", "Because I Love You", "You Can't Beat My Lovin" and many more. 26 tracks in all.

An 80s collection, but one that's filled with gems from Gil Scott-Heron's legendary early years at Flying Dutchman – a time when he was recording some of his most impressively righteous material ever! The music's a hip mix of protest poetry and sweet jazzy numbers – played with great keyboard accompaniment from frequent partner Brian Jackson on nearly every track – plus help from Hubert Laws on flute and sax, and Bernard Purdie on drums. CD features 17 tracks in all – much more than the album – and titles include "Pieces of a Man", "Lady Day & John Coltrane", "Whitey on the Moon", "The Needle's Eye", "Home is Where the Hatred Is", "Did You Hear What They Said?", "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", "No Knock", "Sex Education Ghetto Style", "A Sign Of The Ages", "The Prisoner", and "When You Are Who You Think You Are".

Soaring grooves from Bebu Silvetti – a set that definitely has the disco touches you'd expect on the Salsoul label, but which also seems to pick up a few soundtracky styles as well! Some tunes are upbeat and grooving, with a great blend of strings and beats – the kind that Silvetti does so well – while others are a bit more groovy, and feel like the kind of thing you might hear on an Italian soundtrack of the time – especially when the wordless vocals are scatting along with the music! Titles include "Silvia's Picture", "Winter Rain", "Travel Check", "Steps In The Snow", "A Day In The Country", and "Spring Rain".

A sweet sweet set from The Spinners – and a record that's more "today" than "yesterday", given the tight 70s arrangements from Thom Bell! Bell's Philly approach is still perfect for the group – unlocking their harmonies in very different ways than back in their Motown roots – and the set's got a wicked balance between these sublime slow ballads and some uptempo numbers that bubble like the best of the group's clubby contemporaries. And in the best Philly style, the set even features a few longer tracks that push the 8 minute mark – kind of soul symphonies, of the sort you'd be much more likely to hear from Gamble & Huff – and which really work well with the group's maturing vocal approach. Titles include "I'm Riding Your Shadow (Down To Love)", "You're Throwing A Good Love Away", "Honey I'm In Love With You", "I Must Be Living For A Broken Heart", "Just To Be With You", "Me & My Music", "You're The Love Of My Life", and "I Found Love (When I Found You)".

A massive blend of funk, soul, and gospel – from a small side label in the TK Records universe of the 70s! The sound is like some of the best soul LPs on TK from the time, and the arrangements have a nice warm feel – plenty of sweet Miami elements in the music, especially in the rhythms, which really know how to groove! The King James Version is comprised of five female singers, working with the warmth and depth you might get with Voices Of East Harlem – and they're arranged by keyboardist Gloster Williams, who also wrote some of the material, and delivers these solid lines that really hold the whole thing together. Most of the tracks have a distinct vocal lead, with harmony backing in the style of The Sweet Inspirations – and the album's honestly the sort of set you'd expect to hear on Atlantic Records in the early 70s – given the depth and feeling in the music. A bit smoother and more focused than some of Stevie's earlier work from the 70s – perhaps because he'd been having some chart success with his slicker numbers, but still a pretty groundbreaking batch of grooves that must have been awesome to hear when it first came out! The record includes the slow-funk moog classic "Creepin", which has these wonderful washes of sound throughout, weird vocals by Stevie, and some drums that bump around in off-kilter little patterns just at the right moments. Also includes the hit "Boogie On Reggae Woman", plus "Too Shy To Say", "You Haven't Done Nothin", "It Ain't No Use", "Bird Of Beauty", and "Please Don't Go".

A crucial look at the Chicago scene in the 1980s – and the first collection to really get at the roots of that city's legendary house music scene! Although later labels – like Trax or DJ International – became known as global forces for dance music in the 80s, the big wave of new sounds from the Windy City was really started by a much smaller company – the tiny Mitchbal label, and related Chicago Connection Records! The package was put together by the author of the book The Soul Of New Orleans – and it's a wonderful trip through a sound of that city that's not always featured on reissues: the more upbeat, uptempo soul recordings of the 60s – faster tunes that easily fall within the Northern Soul style. An amazing collection of music – put together ostensibly as a tribute to Excelsior label owner Otis Rene – but also a wonderful document of the wealth of wonderful sounds on the LA scene of the 40s and early 50s! The set is especially notable in that it includes rare early recordings by artists who'd flourish later on bigger labels like Capitol, Liberty, and Atlantic – yet heard here at the start of their careers, and already sounding wonderful – coming up with those unique hybrids of musical modes that made LA sounds some of the most compelling of the time – jump blues, smooth vocal R&B, and more – often pointing the way towards musical growth to come in the 60s. Despite the label's small status, its productions were all top-shelf – very polished, and well put-together – as you'll hear on this batch of 44 tracks that includes the titles "Pitchin Up A Boogie" and "All For You" by Nat King Cole, "Synthetic Joe" and "Groovin High" by Gerald Wilson, "Thursday Blues" and "I've Got To Have You That's All" by Jimmy Rushing, "Jeff Hi Stomp" and "Volcano" by Johnny Otis, "John The Revelator" by Luvenia Nash Singers, "Mobile" by Otis Rene, "I'm Still Crazy" and "Ribbely Bop" by The Drifters, "Strange Land Blues" by The Hollywood Flames, "Huckle Boogie" by Preston Love, "Crazy Baby" and "Think It Over" by Phil Flowers, "You Better Change Your Way" by Charles Brown, and "At Least You Could Save Me A Dream" by Herb Jeffries.

Our favorite volume so far in Kent's tribute to the legendary UK Sue label – and a great little collection that's overflowing with soulful tracks from the 60s! The premise is a bit obscure to most American listeners – as the CD brings together tracks that were licensed to UK indie Sue Records, for English release in the 60s – but the music more than speaks for itself, no matter what the setting! Sue did a mighty fine job of moving past the hits, and brought a heck of a lot of great American indie soul over the Atlantic back in its day – as you'll hear in this fab 25 track set that includes the cuts "Gimme Gimme" by ZZ Hill, "Don't Mess With My Man" by Irma Thomas, "Stronger" by Thelma Jones, "Crying Days Are Over" by The Kelly Brothers, "What Did You Tell This Girl Of Mine" by OV Wright, "Believe In Me" by Jerry Butler, "That Did It" by Bobby Bland, "Incense" by the Anglos, "Your Red Wagon" by Donnie Elbert, and "Before It's Too Late" by Jackie Day.

We're not sure where "uptown" is in the Nashville scene – but the location hardly matters, given the strength of the grooves on this set! The package brings forth a whole host of Music City soul gems we've never heard before – lots of work from the Ref O Ree and Tee Jay labels, some of which has the care and class to match the uptown soul sound that was coming from New York in the 60s, although overall, the set's got even more charm as a southern-styled soul collection! You can definitely hear echoes of other Tennessee soul of the time – bits of Sound Stage Seven and Stax – yet the work here also has its own flavor, too – and is a welcome rediscovery in a world of familiar reissues. A really unique album for Chaka Khan – one in which she teams up with a host of jazz artists to craft a classic-styled set of vocals! Given that Chaka was at the height of her 80s groove solo career at the time of this one, the move was a surprising one – but also a great chance for Chaka to show that she had a lot more to offer than just pop chops, as she sounds pretty darn great scatting on these classic jazz numbers. Players include Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Lenny White, and Chick Corea – and titles include "Them There Eyes", "All Of Me", "Take The A Train", "Hire Wire", "The Aerialist", and "I Hear Music".

Otis Johnson may well be the Timmy Thomas of gospel music – as here, he's working with just spare organ lines and rhythm machine – in a way that gives most of these tracks the raw, personal feel of Timmy's classic "Why Can't We Live Together"! The overall sound is a bit more rough – given that Otis was working in a small Michigan studio, and not the TK scene in Miami – but the album's definitely got that slow-stepping feel we love in Timmy's early music – and the vocals echo out with this personal sense of yearning that's mighty great – and quite different than the bolder, confident sound you'd hear in more mainstream gospel recordings. The album's a damn enigma, and a great one too – and titles include "All Thing", "Come Back", "Your Day", "He's The Way", and "Time To Go Home".

They're not kidding with the name of this group – because the set's a masterpiece of 70s Afro Funk – totally great all the way through! The combo has African origins, but they're recording here in London – which makes for a really wonderful criss-crossing of cultural modes – the same sort of heavy, dark-tinged groups you'd hear from Cymande or Demon Fuzz – both of whom are a great comparison to the sound of this group! Bass is very heavy in the mix – not dubby, but really rumbling right from the start of each tune – and helping to set up the complicated percussion patterns, fuzzy guitar bits, and nicely trippy vocals – all of which are recorded in just the right way to make the sum of the elements sound like way more than the parts. Titles include "Afro Funk", "Tei Egwu", "Hot Love", "Farewell To Ibusa", and "Try & Try".

A totally righteous little record – the only set we've ever seen from Native American vocalist Cheyenne Fowler – and a wicked blend of jazz, soul, and funk – tied together with a really positive spirit! Gene Russell had a hand in putting the set together, and you can definitely hear some echoes of his more spiritual work in the music – and like some of the best underground acts of the 70s, Cheyenne has a way of mixing up all the hippest elements of the left side of the spectrum – then coming up with a sound that's deeply personal, and really unique! The best cuts on the record have a jazz funk approach to soul – with funky keyboard grooving, wah-wah guitar, and tasty horn flourishes over the top – and although Cheyenne's not the greatest vocalist in the world technically, she's got a strong and proud style that really carries the record. Titles include "I Don't Speak With Forked Tongue", "Cheyenne's Coming", "Grooving With You", "It Ain't All About That", "Come Back To Me", "I Love You But I Gotta Go", and "Dream Street".

A massively wonderful album from Dayton – an album that has the group really getting their groove together – still sticking a bit in the older funk mode from the past, but also bringing in some warmer, deeper touches to their music too! There's a solidness here that's undeniable – a balance of rhythms and instrumentation that few other soul groups of the time were hitting – topped by vocals that have a nice dose of jazz in the mix too, with the sort of sophistication you might expect to hear from some of Wayne Henderson's At Home productions. Production is nice and warm, never too cold or commercial – and titles include the group's great cut "The Sound Of Music" – not the theme from the Broadway show, but a great two-stepper that's instantly infectious – plus "Caught In The Middle", "It Must Be Love", "Promise Me", and "Lookin Up".

A huge collection of work from the great Tommy Edwards – a set that features four full albums' worth of material, and which stands as a rich testament of Edwards' contributions to American music at the end of the 50s! Tommy has a unique approach on these tracks – a style that's rooted in older jazz vocal modes, especially given his poise and class – but which also has some pop production too – in ways that arguably make Edwards a key figure in the development of early soul music! You'll definitely hear a key criss-crossing of modes on these tracks – heartfelt vocals mixed with captivating production – and the package features a whopping 57 tracks in all – material from albums that includes For Young Lovers, It's All In The Game, Step Out Singing, and You Started Me Dreaming – with titles that include "Music Maestro Please", "Please Mr Sun", "My Sugar My Sweet", "It's All In The Game", "You Win Again", "Always", "Until The Real Thing Comes Along", "The Composer", "Should I", "Suzie Wong", as You Desire Me", and "Once There Lived A Fool".

A great 2CD set that brings together 39 tracks from Syl Johnson's years at Hi Records! Although Syl's probably best known to funk fans for his early recordings in Chicago, his 70s sides for Hi in Memphis are also quite nice – mellower, and perhaps bluesier, than his early funkier singles and LP tracks, but touched by the warmth of the Memphis scene, in a way that mellows Syl's vocals nicely. The package features just about every track you'd want from Syl's years at the label – and tracks include "We Did It", "Back For A Taste Of Your Love", "Bleu Water", "Diamond In The Rough", "Anyway The Wind Blows", "I Let A Good Girl Go", "Keeping Down Confusion", "Music To My Ears", "Please Don't Give Up On Me", "I Hear The Love Chimes", "Feelin Frisky", "Watch What You Do", "Steppin Out", and "Funk You".

A love letter from R Kelly – and one that feels warmer, deeper, and more sincere than most of his work from the past decade or so! We always love Kelly – we have to, given our hometown affiliation – but this set's a great reminder of what first made him stand out back in the 90s – a deeply soulful approach to mainstream R&B, steeped in classic roots, yet fused into a contemporary spirit that's undeniable. Supposedly, the album's a throwback to older soul styles from the 70s – but we're not ready to call it that, as much as we are the obvious love of those sounds that we first heard in R Kelly's earliest music. And while R may no longer be the future of modern soul, he's still got plenty to offer – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Taxi Cab", "Just Can't Get Enough", "Love Letter", "A Love Letter Christmas", "When A Woman Loves", and "Love Is".

Donal Leace was one of a few hip soul acts that Roberta Flack brought to Atlantic during her strongest period with the label – and he's a soulful folk singer whose work reminds us of certain folksy moments on Flack's first few albums. There's less of a Terry Callier sound than a Tim Hardin one – and the backing is filled with jazzy inflections laid down by players like Keith Jarrett, David Spinozza, Ray Lucas, Bernard Purdie, and Ron Carter. Flack produced – and again, you can definitely hear her love of folk music on the LP. Titles include "Andrea", "Midnight Cowboy", "Shimaree", "Sad Lisa", "What Does It Take", and "Today Won't Come Again".

The great Vince Montana was one of the strongest forces in the Philly soul scene of the 70s – and he was not only an excellent vibist whose instrumentation can be heard on countless LPs, but also one heck of an arranger, with a real talent for a soulful groove. Montana's work was head and shoulders above most disco of the time, and included strong elements of funk, and a real concern for jazzy phrasing that kept things real. Proof of that can be heard on many cuts on the record – from the sweet funk of "Samba De Montana", to the complicated conga and jazzy breakdown disco of "You Know How Good It Is", to the straight soulful disco of the title cut, "I Hear Music", which is a great little cover of the Gamble & Huff track.

One of the last great funk albums from King Records – a set recorded in the early 70s, but done with a crackling sharp sound that's like the best late 60s James Brown albums for the label! Mickey Murray is from Augusta, GA – James Brown's hometown – and his approach is similar to James' at times, but it's also got more of a southern funk groove too – a bit like the great combination you'll hear in Lee Fields' music, which is a perfect fit for the album's raw, rootsy production! The record includes a great funky cut called "The Buzzard", plus other nice ones like "Explosive Population", "People Are Together", "Going Back To Alabama", "Fat Gal", and "I Wanna See My Baby".

One of Billy Paul's greatest albums ever – or perhaps the greatest! The record is an amazing blend of soul, jazz, and a soaring sense of spiritualism that's not only rare for Billy Paul – but which makes the record sound different than any other Philly International LP from the time! Billy's way more than a soul singer here – and working in a mode that's very high-concept, reaching towards the sky to bring a new maturity to the music that pushes way past his other pop and soul recordings in the 70s – almost with a consciousness of the spiritual jazz underground, but a bit more focused as well. You can hear this best on the classic track "East", a swirling long groover that takes an extended funky soul jazz journey – and other good cuts include "Jesus Boy (You Only Look Like A Man)", "Love Buddies", "I Wish It Were Yesterday", "Magic Carpet Ride", "This Is Your Life", and a nice cover of "Compared To What". CD features single versions of "Magic Carpet Ride", "Jesus Boy", and "This Is Your Life".

An obscure Motown group from the end of the 70s – 21st Creation had a strident uptempo group sound that reminds us of some of the more successful disco hits of Tavares from the same time. The arrangements are mostly club-oriented – handled by Willie Hutch, Gene Page, and Harold Johnson – and you can hear the group's style to best effect on tracks like their remake of Marvin Gaye's "After The Dance", Willie Hutch's "You Gotta Dance To My Music", or the hard grooving "Thanks For Saving Me". Not totally standout material, but with a few nice moments. Other tracks include "Funk Machine", "Tailgate", and "Baby, I'm For Real".

A massive tribute to the genius of soul in the Windy City – a wonderful compilation that really gets at the special sound Chicago brought into play during the early years of soul! The set is filled with key cuts from the Chi-town scene of the time – some of them lesser-known that the famous hits always associated with our hometown – and beautifully selected to really capture a moment when soul music was first starting to come together as a style! You can definitely hear roots from Chicago blues, gospel, and R&B in the cuts – but they're definitely all soul, all the way through – a killer batch of nuggets that manages to offer up fresh bits from some big names, and uncover some great cuts by some less familiar folks. They're not kidding with the name of this group – because the set's a masterpiece of 70s Afro Funk – totally great all the way through! The combo has African origins, but they're recording here in London – which makes for a really wonderful criss-crossing of cultural modes – the same sort of heavy, dark-tinged groups you'd hear from Cymande or Demon Fuzz – both of whom are a great comparison to the sound of this group! Bass is very heavy in the mix – not dubby, but really rumbling right from the start of each tune – and helping to set up the complicated percussion patterns, fuzzy guitar bits, and nicely trippy vocals – all of which are recorded in just the right way to make the sum of the elements sound like way more than the parts. Magnificent! Charles Earland may well be our favorite-ever jazz organist – and after you hear this set, he'll probably be yours too! Charles really didn't emerge as a name until the beginning of the 70s – and although that decade did some nasty stuff to some of the 60s best organ players, Earland managed to really get a heck of a lot out of the decade, twisting and turning his style with all the changes in arrangements and instrumentation, yet always keeping it real, laying down killer solos and funky grooves that rank with some of the best organ work of his generation! This 2CD set is the first to really pay tribute to Earland's genius – and it's a massive batch of tracks the spans his early years at Prestige Records, and moves into his work for labels like Mercury, Columbia, and Muse. Disc 1 features "funky organ grooves" – 10 tracks from Prestige and Muse with a straight heavy soul jazz funk groove, cut with monster players like Melvin Sparks, Idris Muhammad, Gary Chandler, and Virgil Jones. Billy Stewart was one of the greatest soul singers ever to record for Chess (even though he wasn't from Chicago), and although his work for the label stretched from the early to the late 60's, he's not nearly as well-remembered as he should be. This set aims to correct that, and features 20 great tracks of some of the most unusual soul you'll ever hear. You may already know Billy's voice from his amazing crossover version of "Summertime" (which still shows up on oldies stations), but that's only the beginning of the way this stuff grooves, as the arrangements are fantastic, and have a tight punch and loping groove that will knock you off your feet. Tracks include the classic "Sitting In the Park" (later covered by GQ), "Cross My Heart", "Secret Love", "Tell Me The Truth", "Strange Feeling", "Fat Boy", and the nice version of "Every Day I Have the Blues", which begins with some tight funky drums. The Ike & Tina Turner Revue shakes the foundation at Carnegie Hall on April Fools Day, 1971! There's a good reason for there being so many live albums by Ike & Tina – it's because they're damn great on stage – and this NYC set is a strong showcase for The Ikettes and The Kings Of Rhythm, too! The group was riding a peak wave of popularity around this time, and they cover a wide variety of songs in a set that's masterfully-paced – starting out slow and building up intensity as it goes! Titles include the Ikettes-led "Piece Of My Heart" and "Everyday People", the thunderous Tina intro "Doin' The Tina Turner", "Sweet Soul Music", "Proud Mary", "I Smell Trouble", "Ike's Tune", "I Want To Take You Higher", "I've Been Loving You Too Long", "Respect" and more.

One of the most fantastic soundtracks of the 70's – and of all time! For this, his masterpiece film, Melvin Van Peebles composed a non-stop collage of crazy sounds and funky jams, played by him and a very young Earth, Wind, & Fire, and pasted together in a pastiche of music, dialogue, and sound effects that serve as an audio document of the film. If you've ever seen the movie – and even if you haven't – you'll find that the soundtrack works as a 40 minute version of the film, shifting back and forth with a loose narrative progression. Of course, the real appeal is the funky music – and you'll hear more than enough of that on tracks like "Sweetback's Theme", "Hoppin John", "Come On Fee", and "Sweetback Getting it Uptight".

The one and only album ever cut by The Winstons – an obscure mixed-race soul combo who had roots in Otis Redding's touring band, and who hit big with a soul Grammy in 1969 for the title track to this one, "Color Him Father". The cut's an amazing document of its time, a sweet little story-song about a boy who's lost his dad in the war (Vietnam?), and who grows to love the new guy that his mom is dating. Sounds sappy, but it's one of the most compelling soul singles of the 60s – and is always a treat to hear. The other big cut on the record is the classic breakbeat track "Amen Brother", which is an instrumental reading of the gospel standard, done in a fast-funk style that's been sampled for years – both by hip hoppers and by drum n bass producers! An excellent bit of 80s groove! Unlimited Touch have a cool 2-female lead vocal style – and they keep it tight and soulful on grooves that have a nice tight club sound, in a style that often reminds us of Roy Ayers produced albums, like Ladies Of The 80s, or some of the more uptempo tracks on the Ramp album. Their music is some of the most soulful to come out on the Prelude label at the time – and this CD collects titles from the years 1980 to 1984. Postwar blues from Chicago – a great double-length collection of rare material from JOB Records – a Windy City imprint that was much smaller than Vee Jay, Chess, and Mercury – and who only ever issued most of this material as 78 rpm singles! The JOB sound is definitely rough and raw – still showing the strong influence of electric guitar's introduction to northern blues, yet putting the music forward with a stripped-down sound that's really timeless – and which often emphasizes piano as much as guitar. No surprise, there's some great keyboardists on the set – working in a really dark-edged style – as you'll hear on the 36 track set of tunes that includes "Evening Sun" by Johnny Shines, "Drinking Woman" by John Brim & His Trio, "My Head Can't Rest Anymore" by Baby Face Leroy Foster, "Down Home Child" by Sunnyland Slim, "Boogy Fool" by Snooky Pryor, "Dark Road" by Floyd Jones, "Five Long Years" by Eddie Boyd, "How Much More" by JB Lenoir, and "Rough Treatment" by Little Hudson & His Red Devil Trio.

Great stuff! From Motown songwriters to world-class superstars, the trip was a well-deserved one for Valerie Simpson and Nick Ashford – and this album's perhaps their crowning achievement in sophisticated club soul! The record's got a great groove that offers a more soulful version of disco than most of the competing albums on major labels at the time – a perfect summation of the care and craft that Ashford & Simpson had always put into their music right from the start! Sweet 70s funk from the great Oscar Brown – quite a change from his jazz-based work of the 60s, but a great new sitting for all of his wonderful wit and warmth! Brown's still a hell of a songwriter, and one with a very socially-conscious eye – sharper here than before, with lots of comments on the changes in society in the 70s, mixed with a few more heartfelt, personal moments too. There's still a bit of jazz in the mix – thanks to work from Seldon Powell on reeds, and Joe Sample on keyboards – and arrangements are by old friends Floyd Morris, the underground Chicago soul genius – and Sivuca, best known for his Brazilian music, but a great choice here to expand the groove. Brown wrote all the tunes on the record – and titles include "From My Window", "Like A Flower", "Brother Where Are YOu", ""The Lone Ranger", "If You Come Back", and "The Joneses".

A pair of great ones from this overlooked soul group from Illinois! Modern Heart is wonderful work from Champaign – a really self-contained group, and one who really rise above the rest of the early 80s soul scene! The album's got a tightness that's hard to beat – yet a sound that's never too slick or commercial either – kind of that best balance you'd find more in late 70s mainstream soul work, save for the fact that any upbeat numbers here have more of an 80s groove style than a disco one. The mellow tracks balance things out nicely, and show a deeper songwriting sound from the group than we might have expected – further testament to the strength of the album, along with the group's own arrangements and production. Titles include "Cool Running", "Party Line", "Try Again", "Let Your Body Rock", "Get It Again", "Love Games", and "Walkin". Woman In Flames is sweet, tight, and right on the money – a stellar bit of soul from Champaign – one of those great 80s groups who never seemed to get their due, but managed to make some really wonderful music right from the start! The album's got a slightly heavier production tip than before – arrangements from James Newton Howard that link Champaign a bit more to the sound of their mid 80s contemporaries – especially some of the other groups on Columbia. Yet there's also a healthy core to the album that comes from the group's own contributions – their continued strong sense of songwriting and performance, which makes their overall sound a lot less reliant on outside help than other groups of the period. The style of the set follows from Williams' best earlier work – a bit of bounce at the bottom of most of the tracks, but never too much – just enough to make the titles bubble with enough electricity to carry through the catchiest hooks of the lyrics. Instrumentation includes a fair bit of 80s drum machine rhythms, offset by the deeper soul of Williams' vocals – and titles include "Curious", "Runner", "In Your Eyes", "Order In The House", "Smile", "Runner (dub mix)", "With All My Heart", and "Shadow Of Another Love".

Rare hard funky soul from early 70s titans Damn Sam The Miracle Man – and some of the rawest, fiercest funk we've ever heard! Damn Sam is actually a group – spearheaded by vocalist OC Tolbert – a man with a roaring voice and righteous delivery that could tear through brick – and producer Jack Taylor. If not for the amazing funky 45 tracks "Damn Sam The Miracle Man", "Smash" and "BJ" – all of which appear on this long lost LP – they may have been obscure to even the most diligent crate diggers, an argument in favor of that format if there ever was one. The group is a real killer, with absolutely pummeling funky drums and snapping electric congas & bongo work on just about every track – plus soaring trumpet and sax work that counterbalance the fury of Tolbert's vocals nicely. Tolbert's history with gospel lends a genuine spiritual aspect to the frenzy, too – one of the sweetest raw funk tornadoes you could every hope to get swept up by! I Touched A Dream is an especially tremendous record – a bit smoother than before, but still much more daring vocally than most other harmony groups at the time, cutting through some smoother arrangements with a sublime approach to the material that's all-soul all the way! Arrangements are sometimes bit uptempo and modern, but they're still in a strong Chicago groove – with backings by Tom Tom 84 and Sonny Sanders – and production by Carl Davis and Eugene Record, making for a late 70s update of the classic Brunswick soul approach! Titles include "Look At Us Now", "All About The Paper", "So You Are Love", "Passionate Breezes", and "I Touched A Dream". Whatever Turns You On is another later winner from The Dells – a record that has the group mixing uptempo grooves and sublime mellow numbers – all of which are sung with heartbreaking vocals that show the group as still one of the best in soul music – even after more than 20 years on record! Arrangements are by Tom Tom 84 and Sonny Sanders, and production by Carl Davis and Eugene Record – all key factors in the success of the album, thanks to a long local history with the Chicago soul legends – and a respect that's very clear in their handling of the sound on this set. A sterling set from the great Will Downing – and a record that definitely has the master at the top of his game throughout! The package features some songs from his recent trilogy of EP releases – Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow – but also includes five new songs too – and together, the tunes work wonderfully to create one of the best full length efforts from Downing in years! Will's got this style that's easy-flowing, yet completely confident too – a reminder that sometimes the best approach to male soul music is one that relaxes into the groove – in ways that so many other singers in the younger generation seem to have forgotten. The backings are great too – as laidback as Downing's vocals, without any of the clunk that might have happened if Will was recording for a bigger label trying to push him into the charts. There's plenty of glow and warmth throughout – and titles include "Only One", "Send For Me", "Falling", "Stuff That I Like", "One Step Closer", "Never Find Another Love", "Sexy", and "You Were Meant Just For Me" – a duet with Avery Sunshine. Also includes a totally great long track – a "live rehearsal" of the medley "I Go Crazy/Wishing On A Star/Try".

A nicely complicated little record – and one of the funkiest albums on the legendary Invictus label! The 8th Day group was a loosely-conceived batch of Detroit soul talents designed to cash in on a concept of the Holland-Dozier-Holland team – and they weren't just a studio project, as they included some wonderful talents that could make some great music when they wanted to! One of these was the amazing Detroit organist Lyman Woodard – who contributed the fantastic track "Cheba" to the album, an incredible organ groover that's unlike anything you've ever heard, rolling on with this pinched Hammond sound over congas, all-instrumental, and completely seductive! Another was Melvin Davis, who had recorded the song "Good Book" as a solo artist – but which was released here as if it was by the group. There's also a great guitarist in the group – unnamed due to the lack of liner notes – but who really shines on the funky tracks "Anythang", "Rocks In My Head", and "Heaven Is There To Guide Us", all with a fuzzed-out Detroit 70s groove! CD features the bonus tracks "Just As Long (single)", "I'm Worried (single)", "It's Instrumental To Be Free", and "You Made Me Over".

A record from the Three Of Us – but one we remember best for the heavy keyboards of Hilton Felton! The set's even more stripped-down than some of Hilton's other funky classics from the 70s – an instrumental outing that features Felton on organ and Fender Rhodes, Johnathan Settel on drums, and David Mendenhall on guitar – a great player we've never heard before, but one who carves out some mighty sharp lines next to the keyboards! The drums are nice and tight, too – and occasionally augmented by a bit of bass or congas – and Hilton's got that wonderfully fluid groove that makes the tunes bristle with funky, soulful energy – every bit the best sort of groove you'd find in early 70s records by Charles Earland or Johnny Hammond – but even better, as there's a raw indie vibe going on too. Titles include "Here Comes David", "Music Shall Never Die", "Your Analysis", "Dream Come True", and "Maybe You'll Come Back To Me".

One of the best new soul records we've heard in years – a tremendous accomplishment for the mighty Lee Fields, and a set that's quite different than any of his other work! We've always loved Lee's funk and deep soul sides, but this album's something new altogether – almost done in the hard-edge, downtempo mode of the east coast harmony scene of the late 60s and early 70s – like some of the best group soul work coming out of New Jersey or Philly, with some super-dope production and instrumentation that's really amazing! The grooves follow strongly in the same laidback style as recent El Michels work – no surprise, given the El Michels connection to the music – with beats that are hard, but slow – and instrumentation that's funky, but in a mellow sort of way. Lee's vocals are as deep as ever – very much trained in the James Brown tradition, but turned here towards a really unique groove that makes us completely reevaluate his talents – an amazing achievement not just for Fields, but also for the whole Truth & Soul/El Michels crew! An instant classic – with tracks that include "My World", "Ladies", "Expressions Theme", "Honey Dove", "Money I$ King", "Love Comes & Goes", "Do You Love Me", and "Last Ride".
