Fantastic sounds from the Australian scene of the early 80s – spare electronic work from Ash Wednesday and related projects – all a surprisingly great entry in the lost world of minimal wave! Most numbers here are stark and spare, but undeniably tuneful – the core charm we love at the point when groups like Human League or Cabaret Voltaire started getting a bit more focus, yet were still light years from being commercial. Like the music of both of those groups, the styles here lean heavily on the best analogue sounds forged in the decade before, filtered down to a basic essence, and redirected with tuneful lines and some moody vocals. Given that most of what we know from Australia at the time is guitar-heavy rock and noise, the set's a real revelation – and features 20 tracks that include "Psychotic Reaction", "A Circuit Like Me", "Bad Timing", "Sex I", and "A Living Person" by The Metronomes; "Boom Boom Baby", "Eighteen Creature", and "The Galvanized Garden Of Inner Peace" by Modern Jazz; "Useless Information" and "Radiation Injection" by Thealonian Music; and "Love By Numbers" and "Boring Instrumental" by Ash Wednesday.

A pair of mid 70s album by Bobby Bare – the ambitious, concept-driven Hard Time Hungrys – and the easygoing The Winners & Other Losers – two worthy efforts from one the most unique voices and personalities of his era! Both albums are heavy with songs written by Bare family friend and frequent songwriting partner Shel Silverstein. Johnny Cash gets all the mainstream attention for collaborating with Shel on "A Boy Named Sue", but Shel and Bare have a far richer collaborative history together. Home For The Hungrys tells the story of the impoverished, with the title track, "Back Home In Huntsville Again", "Bottles And Boxes", "Truck Driver, Truck Driver", "The Unemployment Line" and more. The Winners And Other Losers is simply a great batch of tunes, sans concept, with the enduring "Drop Kick Me Jesus", "My Better Half", "Keeping Rosie Proud Of Me" and more. 24 tracks in all.

One of the greatest moog albums ever – all original sounds and tunes from the legendary Bruce Haack! Haack had spent most of the 60s doing small label kiddie records on his own, but this late 60s gem on Columbia is probably his best known work – a masterpiece of short and groovy little songs that are heavy on analogue electronics and special effects! There's a really fuzzy feel to most of the work here – heavy echo and reverb that give the album a very dark feel, even when the songs are a bit light and playful. Haack's lyrics are great too – quite conceptual, with a spiritual undercurrent that's surprisingly great – and which adds a further layer of meaning to the set! The whole thing's a bit like the Silver Apples, but more experimental – and there's a love of sound, shape, and texture that Haack never matched again on later albums. A key predecessor to Suicide, Stereolab, and countless others – with titles that include "Electric To Me Turn", "Cherubic Hymn", "Program Me", "War", "Incantation", "Angel Child", "Super Nova", "Requiem", "Song Of The Death Machine", and "National Anthem To The Moon". CD features the previously unreleased "Electric To Me Turn (alternate version)", and a Canadian radio interview interspersed with songs!

Mindblowing music from this ultra-cool musician – nearly three albums packaged on one CD! First up is Stones – a very groovy set of tunes that we'd rank right up there with Hal Blaine's Psychedelic Percussion for sheer nuttiness! Emil Richard plays a range of percussion instruments – as on other albums from the time – vibes and lots of mallet and percussion instrument – but he's also working with a really noisy moog, handled by Paul Beaver, and some weird "22-tone-to-the-octave" instruments that give the album an other-worldly tone that we really love. The whole thing bubbles and bleeps and grooves – with plenty of jazz still in the mix, as befits Richards' roots in the LA scene of the late 50s. 12 tracks in all – all named after birthstones – with titles that include "Garnet", "Moonstone", "Emerald", "Topaz", "Opal", and "Ruby". Next up are 6 tracks from New Time Element – one of the grooviest albums to come from the godlike hands of Emil Richards! This album's got a bit more punch than some of Richard's more jazz-based sessions – with Emil playing a wide range of percussion instruments, plus vibes and marimba – all backed by some incredibly groovy work on organ and piano by Dave McKay! Arrangements are by Tom Scott and Paul Beaver – and the record's got the jaunty, swinging quality of some of Scott's best early work of the time – particularly his early gems for Impulse! Titles include a great version of Tom Scott's oft-recorded "Blues for Hari", a very groovy number with a great 60s eastern feel – plus "Hot Fudge Sundae", "Happy Together", "Jimmy", and "Georgy Girl". And last but not least are 8 tracks that comprise Journey To Bliss – a fantastic bit of "Eastern" tinged jazz – and a real musical Journey To Bliss on its own! Vibist Emil Richards has always been totally groovy in our book – but he really outdoes himself here – working in an exotic mode that features lots of weird percussion over choppy modal grooves from keyboards, guitar, and drums – all in a wild blend of rhythms and grooves played by Richards and his Microtonal Blues Band. Players include Tom Tedesco and Dennis Budimir on guitar, Dave MacKay on keyboards, and Joe Porcaro on drums – but all players handle a variety of instruments, as does Richards, who must play dozens of different percussion elements on the set! Side one of the album features some great short groovers – like "Maharimba", "Bliss", "Mantra", and "Enjoy Enjoy" – all of which are in a tripped-out LA guru hippy mode that's simply wonderful! Side two features the extended "Journey To Bliss" suite, which has some spoken bits and a much wilder sound – but also the same sort of groovy pop-Eastern sound as side one!

Fantastic! This is Yma Sumac's rock album from the early 70s – and it's got a wild sound that's totally different from any of her work at Capitol! The record includes lots of electric instrumentation, and Yma's voice moves from the exotic to the psychedelic, as she sings along with some great organ/guitar small group backing produced by Les Baxter. Sounds weird at first, but it's great, and almost a bit funky! Titles include "Zebra", "El Condor Pasa", "Tree Of Life", "Flame Tree", "Looke Around", and "Let Me Hear You". This Omni CD version includes 3 previously unreleased bonus tracks: "Savage Rock" (plus an alternate version) and "Parade".

Country rock and blue-eyed southern soul from Larry Jon Wilson – his New Beginnings and Let Me Sing My Song released by Monument on '75 and '76 – together here in a single package from Omni! New Beginnings is Wilson's first for Monument is a total gem that doesn't fit comfortably in any one genre, which may have limited it's commercial potential, but it's a warm, soulful southern effort that deserves some love. Wilson has a deep, smoky voice, playing over arrangements by Bergen White that balance introspective sweetness with a bit of funky southern country rock. Title include "New Beginnings", "Lay Me Down Below", "Bertrand My Son", "The Truth Ain't In You", "Broomstraw Philosophers And Scuppernong Wine" and more. Let Me Sing My Song To You has even more stylistic range, from country funk to mournful, Waylon Jennings level balladry, to numbers sweetened by strings. Again, the songs are great, and make us wish that Wilson would have stuck around longer in the industry and gave us a bunch more them! Includes "Drowning In The Mainstream", "I Remember It Well", "Kindred Spirits", "Farther Along" and more. 20 tracks in all.

A wild collection of extraterrestrial country, pulp, pop, r&b and even some doo wop influenced tunes from the outerspace fringes of 60s & 70s Nashville & beyond – largely from the brain bananas of Jack Blanchard & Misty Morgan! We knew that Jack & Misty recorded some fairly far out countryish gems as a duo – but this crazy set really opens our minds to how wild they were as writers, producers & arrangers! It truly rivals Joe Meek's productions when it comes to pulpy themes and unpredictable stylistic range – while carrying a weird, earthier rustic & rural groove. Jack & Misty sing and play often throughout, as themselves and under pseudonyms – and they recruited friends and peers as singers and players for the others. Far more than just an exercise in strangeness – the songs are good enough to stand out as more than novelties, and some of the most respected Nashville session players of the past half century can be found in the notes. You get electrified banjo, sax, and organ in the same wild tunes – any questions? The majority of songs were cut between the fertile period between 1965 and 1974 – with a few going back earlier & later – a whopping 30 tracks in all! Sweet and sexy sounds from William Sheller – a rare French set from the early 70s – and a record we'd rank right up there with the best work by Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Claude Vannier! Sheller's got a similar groove here – a way of compressing the instrumentation right down to the core, and slipping it around slinky rhythms and spacey production – both of which make familiar instruments sound really way-out! There's also a bit of darkness to the set too – which comes from Sheller's process of recasting a mass structure into a new sort of vision – and a few points feature vocalizations alongside the way-out instrumentation. Titles include "Introit", "Ave Frater Rosae Et Aurae", "Lux Aeterna", "Hare Krishna", and "Souls Le Signe Du Verseau". Plus, there's some even groovier stuff at the end – a whole host of rare singers form Sheller, which feel like some of the best French sound library funk or soundtrack cuts of the period! These tracks are wonderful – and titles include "Couleurs", "Lands Of Shadow", "Generissimo", "Exctissimo", "Erotissimo", "My Year Is A Day", and "Living East Dreaming West".

Wild, psychedelic era material from the very hip Lutheran pastor Brother John Rydgren! He sports a smoky voice and a poetic, playful, almost comedic spoken word style – in a way that's very much reminiscent of Ken Nordine – as if Ken was a groovy Christian poet! The sound is fuzzy, tripped out psychedelic pop – and his mission seems to be to satirize the sounds and styles of the time as much as it is to spread the Good Word – but at the same time, he's fully embracing the psychedelic sounds! It's almost entirely spoken word on the vocal front – with some oddball choir backdrops and other, often female voices floating in and out from time to time – and pretty diverse instrumentation that often feels like he's vocalizing over some psych funk sound library grooves! Also like our man Nordine, Brother John was a radio personality – but he released some incredibly rare LPs – with '68's Silhouette Segments, '67's Cantata Of New Life and '66's World Of Youth anthologized here by Omni – along with some additional material and a nice little booklet. Incredibly cool stuff! The legendary 1970 recordings Alex Chilton made at Ardent Studios – recorded in a brief moment after the bust up of the Box Tops and before the debut of Big Star – and a truly powerful precursor to that most iconic of soulful Memphis rock acts! For the longest time, the 1970 sessions were something of a rock & roll holy grail – having been oft-discussed, if rarely heard, by Chilton and Big Star diehards. In the mid 90s, Ardent Records finally released the heart of this collection as 1970 – and here it's done up with even more love and respect by Omnivore, which over the course of just a handful of releases has become one of the very best deep digging reissuers of great, should-be classic soul & rock treasures. The material bridges proto rock and country music in a way that confused the heck outta radio programmers and the label's hope to break her into superstardom back in the day – and Wanda had a voice that could've (and should've) made her a star on par with the Sun Studios boys club. She's tough and tender at the same time – and Capitol producer Ken Nelson is near the top of his game here, too. Jellyfish take off from the Beach Boys' Stack O Tracks concept of an instrumental record – and offer up no-vocal versions of the albums Bellybutton and Spilt Milk! These aren't "stripped off" versions of the records – but complete instrumental readings of the music, recorded at the same time as the original records – issued here for the first time ever! Jellyfish's pair of early 90s albums are almost defiantly in the way they ignore the era's alt-rock boom in favor of classic psych and power pop – which is something they earned our respect for, both then and now – and you get to hear just how intricately-layered their sound is here on the instrumentals. Raw, rare material from The Knack – a previously-unissued live performance from 1978 – recorded a year before their famous debut! We love that album to death, but the group have even more bite here – a rough-edged quality that's almost garagey at points – and which does a great job of linking together the Sunset Strip energy of both the 60s and 70s scenes – really showing that LA evolution that birthed The Knack in the first place! Most of the tunes here are familiar from the first album, but the versions here are much more powerful – almost like hearing some gritty demos of the band in formation. The roots of The Knack – and some really amazing tracks that were recorded years before their famous debut on Capitol! The sound here is great and gritty – mostly just Doug Feiger and Berton Averre working out tunes in the studio – using guitar and bass, and serving up the vocals with a nicely sneering style! Even more amazing is that most of these tunes were recorded in 1973 and 1975 – yet already show the pair's tremendous ear for a tight riff and unstoppable hook – that core essence of everything we love about The Knack – but with an even rawer feel too. A beautiful 2CD set of long buried Townes Van Zandt recordings from the early 70s – a period that you can easily argue was his peak – even though few people were buying his records at the time! You get a pretty solid representation of 2 sides of the Townes sound on this great compilation from Omnivore. Disc One features alternate studio versions of some of our favorite songs – a good deal of which were produced by Cowboy Jack Clement at his Nashville studio in 1972 – plus a handful that Townes recorded in LA a year earlier. These have a sound that are fleshed out enough instrumentally, but without the horns, strings and some of the other grander aspects of the officially released album versions in hopes of breaking Townes through to a larger audience at the time. Ironically, it's the rawness and intimacy that Townes fans are drawn to – and that's what you get here! The second disc features demos that mostly feature just Townes's voice and acoustic guitar – and it's achingly beautiful! Despite the familiar track list, every song on this 2CD set is previously unreleased – and essential for longtime Townes fans and newbies alike! One of the two incredible albums by Townes Van Zandt from 1972 – both right up there with his best ever! High, Low & In Between, along with The Late Great Townes Van Zandt represent real career high points for Townes – with sparer, folk-based production and songs that touch on folk, country, blues and even a little bit of gospel. Some sweeter female backing vocals appear hear-and-there providing the right kind of lovely backdrop for the rugged beauty of Townes voice and songcraft. That's all the sweetener it needs. Greatness! One of the best ever records by Townes Van Zandt – cut during his early 70s studio peak – and contrary to the title, a good 25 years before he passed away! He's again working with producer Jack Clement, but this record pares down the slicker and bigger production touches that seemed out of place on the earlier Clement-produced Our Mother The Mountain – with every single sound in service of the song. Towne's voice was never better than it is here and it includes some of his most enduring songs. Those include "Poncho & Lefty", "If I Needed You" and "Fraulein" – each as eternal as anything Townes would ever write or record – but everything here is excellent. Other tracks include "No Lonesome Tune", "Sad Cinderella", "Don't Let The Sunshine Fool You", his great and faithful cover of Hank Williams' "Honky Tonkin'" , "If I Needed You", "Heavenly Houseboat Blues" and more.

Damn! Here's a record we wish we'd been treasuring for years and years, but it came into our lives more than 40 years after it was recorded, released and largely forgotten – an absolute masterpiece of funky country rock & soul from Jim Ford! '69's Harlan County is a record that brings so many styles into the mix that it could make you dizzy if it wasn't all so perfectly grounded by gritty southern roots, R&B and swampy rock – plus Ford's vocals, which range from wildly bugged out to soulful and richly emotional. We hear he once dated Bobbie Gentry and that makes some sense. You can compare him to lots of folks – he is as omnivorous of country, rock and southern soul in all its forms as Charlie Rich, but Ford's nowhere nearly as restrained by convention – and he's drawing from deeper wells of funk and soul. Tony Joe White comes to mind, too, as do a number of Muscle Shoals soul singers of the era. That said, Ford's his own animal! We came in late, but we'll love this record for the rest of time! Some famous fellows played on the sessions, but we won't name them, 'cuz Ford deserves all credit from us.
