Cyclist — Bones In Motion ... CD
Stones Throw/Leaving, 2013. New Copy .... $12.99 13.99
Cyclist rides in with Bones In Motion – a joint release by Stones Throw and Leaving Records – an icy cool mix of early electro and housey influences with grittier, more experimental touches! The hypnotic approach and 80s era synth atmosphere bring Tour De France era Kraftwerk to mind – which sure makes the name Cyclist an apt one – and whether the name is a Kraftwerk nod or not, there's a lot more going on here! It's ultimately quite unique and all Cyclist's own. There's a hazy digital fog hanging over these instrumentals that give it a far fuzzier vibe than most 80s electronics-inspired sounds of the post millenium years – plus a thoroughly modern take on avant sampler dynamics. Distorted as they might be, there's usually a compelling, danceable beat underneath, too! Titles include "Feel Beauty", "Mangel", "Bones In Motion", "Sheen", "Makeshift", "Stove", "The March", "Visions", "Fleet Meeting", Black Train", "Another Exploitation", "

Flying Lotus — Until The Quiet Comes ... CD
Warp, 2012. New Copy .... $14.99
The best yet from Flying Lotus – who we keep allowing ourselves to believe has hit an insurmountable peak with each new record – but he just keeps getting better! Where the preceding Cosmogramma upped the stranger, spacier and more abstract textures, Until The Quiet Comes is a bit more inviting – and to his credit, Flying Lotus keeps things as innovative as ever, while still giving this one just a bit more immediately appealing atmosphere. There's nearly always a compelling beat, whether it's abstract boom bap or bubbly and synthy, with heavy bass and thick waves of sound floating over. An incredible roster of guests contribute, too – including string-arranger Miguel Atwood Ferguson, vocalists Erykah Badu, Laura Darlington and Radiohead's Thom Yorke, keyboardist Dorian Concept, and others – but there's little doubt that this is purely the Flying Lotus show. Greatness! Titles include "All In", "Sultan's Request", "See Thru To U" with Erykah Badu, "DMT Song" with Thundercat, "The Nightcaller", "Only If You Wanna", "Electric Candyman" with Thom Yorke, "Hunger" with Niki Randa, "Phantasm" with Laura Darlington, "Dream To Me" and more.

Basic Soul Unit — Motional Response ... CD
Still Music (Germany), 2012. New Copy .... $18.99
Beautifully percolated grooves from Basic Soul Unit – spare and electronic, yet still surprisingly soulful too – almost like some of the gentler sounds that came around in the second generation of Chicago house, but informed by a 21st Century soul vibe as well! Most numbers have keyboards moving around beats in a really great way – and there's some acid electric touches that are subtle, but which bring a nice sort of retro energy to the set – some moogy brilliance that only gets better and better as the record moves on – almost with a Larry Heard feel in some of the best moments! Titles include "Let Go", "Backseat Lover", "Mind Forest", "Intersection", "All Over Me", "This", "Across The Room", and "Clouds".

Bebo Best & Super Lounge Orchestra — D'Jazzonga ... CD
Chin Chin (Italy), 2008. New Copy .... $13.99 15.98
Bebo Best is at it again – creating new grooves with plenty of retro twists – a bit like some of the older Italian work we loved on the Irma La Douce label – and its cool blend of 50s and 60s elements! There's lots of jazzy flourishes over the tip, played by live instrumentation – and mixed with a hip blend of beats and samples that draw plenty of inspiration from 60s soundtracks and other instrumental modes of the time. A few tracks have vocals, but most are instrumental – and titles include "Soul Bossa Nova", "Anytime Swingers", "Oh Jeje", "Amarcord Jazz", "Baise Moi", and "A 100 Lounge Lizard".

Brownout — Oozy ... CD
Nat Geo, 2012. New Copy .... $11.99
Massively heavy funk from Brownout – and a set that may well be their greatest so far! We weren't sure what to expect when the group hit the Nat Geo label – but honestly, they seem like they're even rawer and rootsier than before – really serving up a brilliant blend of funk and border rhythms – produced to perfection by the trio of bandmates Adrian Quesad, Greg Gonzalez, and Beto Martinez! Tracks are heavy on percussion and guitars – but are topped with jazzy flourishes on trumpet and trombone too – and there's definitely a strong echo of grooves from East LA and the Texas funk scene from decades back. Titles include "Ando Y Dando", "Flaximus", "Stormy Weather", "Meter Beater", "What You Did", "Rub A Dub", and "Poor You".

Four Tet — Rounds (10th Anniversary Edition – with bonus live CD) ... CD
Domino, 2003. New Copy 2 CDs .... $14.99 15.98
Kieran Hebden's third album as Four Tet – an unpredictable, completely hypnotic batch of abstract beatcraft that sounded like it was built to last when it first appeared in the early 00s – and sure enough, it's sounds as fresh as ever a decade+ later! What makes Four Tet at his best so irresistible is the way to rolls from loosely connective beats and hazy atmosphere on one track to heavy sensory overload and back again, fully hypnotizing either way, and all the while holding together in a way that feels of like a single piece. There's a lot of different sounds coming in and out, and not a single audible bit of it is dispensable. Near perfection from one of the more creative laptop instrumentals of his generation. Titles include "Hands", "She Moves She", "First Thing", "My Angel Rocks Back And Forth", "Spirit Fingers", "Unspoken", "Chia", "As Serious As Your Life", "Aney They All Look Broken Hearted" and "Slow Jam". 10th Anniversary edition includes a bonus CD featuring a full live performance from Copenhagen, 2004.

Jose James — Black Magic ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2010. New Copy .... $16.99
A brilliant second set from Jose James – and that's saying a lot, given that his debut was already a classic in our book! The sound here is a little more full, and a little more confident – a magical blend of James' raspy vocals with some jazz and funk-inflected rhythms – never overdone, and all put together with the kind of poise and depth that's made Jose an artist to watch since his very first single! There's a positive, progressive vibe to the whole record – the kind of excitement we only feel grabbing us once in a blue moon – and the sound is expanded a bit from the laidback combo of the first record, thanks to production help from Flying Lotus, Mitsu The Beats, and others. But James' vocals are always center stage in the mix, no matter what the setting – and titles include "Lay You Down", "Touch", "Promise In Love", "Warrior", "Made For Love", "Code", "Save Your Love For Me", "Detroit Loveletter", and "Beauty".

Deborah Jordan — Light ... CD
Futuristica (UK), 2009. New Copy .... $13.99
A fantastic full length set from Deborah Jordan – a singer we know mostly for her wonderful work with Silhouette Brown on an album that was one of our favorites from the London scene a few years back! This set has all the cosmic crackles of Jordan's previous work with Dego & Kaidi Tatham – no surprise, given that she gets help on the album from Atjazz, Don Ray, Jneiro Jarel, and Simbad – each of whom take a crack at production, and help ensure that Deborah's vocals get the right dose of snapping beats, spacey keys, and sweet electric touches! And despite the range of producers, there's a really unified feel to the record – a deep soul that emanates strongly from Jordan's lyrics, tying the whole thing together beautifully. Titles include "Home", "Future Calling", "Get Through", "Want It Back", "Brought To Life", "Slipping Away", "One", "Want It Back", and "Get Through".

Chico Mann — Magical Thinking ... CD
Soundway (UK), 2013. New Copy Gatefold .... $15.99
Some of the tightest tracks we've ever heard from Chico Mann – and some of his most soulful too – a great set of work that really has him stepping past some of the rougher structures of earlier years, and showing a new love of 80s keys and beats as well! The album's got a skittish funky quality that's mighty nice – still with the messed-up edges we've always loved in Mann's funk, but with some tight guitar riffs and bumping basslines that push things forward more strongly than ever before! There's lots of nice vocals, too – some from female singers (including Kendra Morris), some from Chico himself – on cuts that include "Edge Of It", "Long Time Gone", "Magic Touch", "Esta Bueno", "Comes & Goes", "One Day Late", "Vengo A Ti", and "Oye Mira".

Massive Attack — 100th Window ... CD
Virgin, 2003. Used .... $2.99
The latest from the groundbreaking Bristol crew! The sound on this outing isn't as dark as the last two albums, but there's still the unmistakable Massive vibe, with a full, deep bass, dubby elements, hip-hop & jungle inflected beats and atmospheric touches that spawned scores of copycats. Horace Andy is welcome, as on previous efforts, with his bright voice gracing a number of tracks, while on other songs Sinead O'Connor's vocals actually fit in quite well amongst the thick sonic collage. 9 tracks in all: "Future Proof", "What Your Soul Sings", "Everywhen", "Special Cases", "Butterfly Caught", "A Prayer For England", "Small Time Shot Away", "Name Taken" and "Antistar".

Nostalgia 77 — Garden ... CD
Tru Thoughts, 2005. New Copy .... $10.99 11.98
A massively beautiful little record from Nostalgia 77 – one that really knocked our socks off, and that's saying a lot, because we really liked their last album too! The sound here is much jazzier than before – strung out over some funky beats and samples, but played by a larger group that includes some excellent work on saxes and flute, plus these massive acoustic basslines that roll out over the tunes and create a sinister, soulful sort of sound. Alice Russell sings a bit on the record, but honestly the main focus here is on the instrumentation – and the instrumentation is totally great! Given the album's strong reliance on acoustic bass, and the wonderfully angular horn parts, there's a sound here that almost makes us imagine what it would have been like had Charles Mingus got the chance to record for Mo Wax! Titles include "You & Me", "The Garden", "Freedom", "Seven Nation Army", "After Ararat", "Cheney Lane", "Green Blades Of Grass", and "The Hunger".

Soul Revolution Project — One More Time (white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Soulbeats (France), 2012. New Copy .... $18.99
Sweet beats from this cool French duo – a pair who've got that same sort of genre-jumping quality we've loved in French grooves since the days of MC Solaar! The approach here is mostly hip hop, but there's strains of Neo Soul, jazzy funk, and more – shifting the vibe nicely from track to track, but always with a nicely cohesive feel. Some cuts – billed as "samba rap" or "rap bossa" – show a nice Brazilian influence – and titles include "Byrd", "Avolta", "Dance Me", "Kool Out", "Now That I Know You", "Oedeep", "One More Time", and "So Tired".

Spinnerty — Gestures EP (10" single) ... 12-inch
Record Breakin, 2013. New Copy .... $9.99
Some of the sweetest work we've heard so far from Spinnerty – an EP that really just features three versions each of two tracks, but served up in ways that work together like a mini-suite of sound! "53 Pickup" has some great live drums – which really crackle alongside the beats and keyboards, and give the whole thing a great sort of energy – skittish in the main mix, spacier in a "lil Dave rmx", and then breaking like some old school funk record on the "drumapella"! "Noel's Dream" follows in a similar spirit – with great drum breaks next to the Fender Rhodes, giving things a funky feel as the keys spin out in space. There's also another funky "drumapella" version of that tune – and a more upbeat remix from J Boogie!

Thee Satisfaction — Awe Naturale ... CD
Sub Pop, 2012. New Copy .... $12.99 13.99
Spacey soul from this enigmatic duo – a pair who've got a groove that nicely fits their trippy name – and a cosmic approach overall, one that's somewhere in the territory of Georgia Anne Muldrow, and some of the more adventurous talents in the underground! There's a real edge to some of these tracks – a bit more hardness than warmth, which keeps things interesting – and, given the Sub Pop placement of the record, almost takes us back to the early 80s days of some of the more creative soul/crossover projects from the east coast scene. Rhythms are nicely offbeat – a good change from the usual beats and keys – and production helps the vocals crackle, and settle down nicely amidst the electricity. Titles include "Deeper", "Sweat", "Juiced", "Enchantruss", "Needs", "Crash", "Natural E", and "Earthseed".

Zoltan — First Stage Zoltan ... CD
Cineploit (Austria), 2012. New Copy .... $13.99
There's a massive amount of keyboards pictured on the inside cover of the album – which you can hear to great effect in the music of Zoltan! The group's clearly inspired by the sound of 70s soundtracks – and maybe a bit of 80s, too – especially the John Carpenter-type of film score that was often heavy on keyboards, used in really spare and spooky ways! Moogy moments mix with Yamaha, Juno, Jupiter, and other electrified lines – held fast by some firm funky beats and raw guitar riffs – and recorded beautifully with just the right sort of vintage sound! You could easily play the whole album as the score for one of your favorite slasher films from back in the day – and our hat's off to Zoltan for getting the sound so right. Titles include "Canali Replica", "Windowless Monad", "Pilman Radiant", "Krollspell"," The Tall Man", and "Black Iron Prison".

Various — Gamm Doin' James – Tributes To The Godfather Of Soul From The Gamm All Stars ... CD
Gamm (Germany), 2008. Used .... $6.99
Heavy funk with a contemporary twist – a host of James Brown classics, all replayed here by the roster of the Gamm label! Given the hip hop stylings of most of the artists, the funk here is often cut, pasted, and sampled – but there's also clearly a bit of live instrumentation going on too – as well as some occasional deep soul vocals which really help send home the tunes! The overall feel is almost a James Brown remix mode, but in a way that really lets the producers leave their own stamp on the tracks – and the set list includes "The King James Version (part 2)" by D-Frost Beats, "Bang It On" by BadSim, "You Dead Wrong" by Red Astaire with Caretta Bell, "Ain't It Funky" by Yosaku, "Mama's Dead" by Bloodfire, "Fonky President" by Pure P, "Sayin It & Doin It" by Sugarloaf Gangsters, "U Got Soul (Swell's power surge mix)" by Swing Session, and "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose" by DJ Ayres.

Various — Wax Poetics Of Japan – JP Jazz Re-Works Part 2 ... CD
King (Japan), 1970s/2011. New Copy .... $34.99
Rare Japanese jazz treasures – reworked here by a host of the country's hippest producers! The set is a wicked follow-up to the core Japanese Jazz series from Wax Poetics – and like that one, this package features a host of hard-to-find cuts from the 60s and 70s Japanese scene – funky fusion, hammering hardbop, and more – but all really transformed in the hands of these contemporary talents! There's definitely a core jazz root to most tracks – but the grooves also open up with lots of 21st Century influences – pushing the music into territory that's almost what you'd hear on Gilles Peterson's radio shows – or some of the more compelling ends of the modern global underground. The nice-looking package has notes that are almost entirely in Japanese – but we can say that this volume features production work by DJ Mitsu The Beats, Kaoru Inoue, Kza, Root Soul, 9dw, Kan Sano, Calm, and Yukihiro Fukutomi.

Melting Pot (Germany), 2012. New Copy .... $16.99
A glittering assortment of grooves from the always-great Melting Pot Music label – served up here in a special limited sampler that features a few different versions of tunes, some unreleased tracks, and forthcoming numbers too! As you'd guess from Melting Pot, there's plenty of funky nuggets in the set – in styles that range from straight deep funk to processed beats to hip hop instrumentalism – but always at a level that's far beyond the conventional! Titles include "Walk With Us" by Dexter, "Rollin" by Hade X Gutta, "Droptop" by Tbrck, "New Fun" by Brzzvll & Stijn, "Pass It On" by Funkommunity, "Giscar" by Suff Daddy, "My Bike" by Aischa Traida, and "Early Bird" by Uhuru Peak.

new Projections — Between Here & Now ... CD
Guidance, 2002. Used .... $2.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Nicer than the usual set of beats from Guidance – a strong bunch of tunes with some nice jazzy touches, especially on keyboards! A few of the tracks are a bit too abstract, but there's some very nice numbers on here that keep a really soulful groove – keys soloing upfront, percussion snapping along, and light vocals drifting in and out of the mix. Moody and atmospheric, with tracks that include "Rival Cruise", "Inner City Sides", "Escaping Sao Paulo", "Backbone", "Luminate", and "Half Pint".

One of the crunchiest efforts we've heard from IG Culture in awhile – a record that's filled with the cosmic beats we've always loved in his music, yet firmly grounded on earth overall! The set mixes heavy rhythms with lots of vocals and rhymes – efforts from ID 4 Windz, Mr Mensah, Julie Dexter, K Banger, Bilal Salaam, and John Robinson – all wrapped and layered together in ways that are quite different from conventional hip hop, and which really resonate with the kind of collective, collaborative spirit we love in IG's music! There's an even darker feel here than usual – which we really appreciate – and titles include "Catalog Pieces", "Futures Back", "Black Renaissance", "Core Exit", "Truth", "Tangile Dream", "Outsider", "What's Happening", "The Sankofaz Peace Ark-Extra", and "Do The Math".
