Eivind Aarset — Dream Logic ... CD
ECM (Germany), 2012. New Copy .... $16.99 18.99
Spare sonic textures and mellow musical moments from Eivind Aarset – a great session for ECM, and maybe one of his most compelling records in years! This ECM album has a feel that's a bit warmer than some of Aarset's previous work for the Jazzland – not in a way that's commercial at all, given that the music is still pretty darn abstract – but just somehow more organic – in ways that almost feel acoustic at points, even though most of the instrumentation is electric – possibly because of these bass-heavy shapes that often move at the back and bottom of the mix. Eivind plays guitars, electronics, samples, and percussion – with help from Jan Bang on dictaphone and additional samples – on titles that icnlude "The Beauty Of Decay", "Homage To Greene", "Black Silence", "Close", "Reactive", and "The Whispering Forest".

new BADBADNOTGOOD — Flashing Lights/UWM (one-sided single – with etched art B-Side) ... 12-inch
Innovative Leisure, 2013. New Copy .... $11.99
A great 12-inch from BADBADNOTGOOD – with a far-reaching jazzy/cosmic funk take on Kanye West's "Flashing Lights" – plus the equally impressive "UWM". "Flashing Lights" kicks off sparely with thick keys and heavy, heavy drum sound – in a way that initially made us think it was going to settle in with sort of a space rock take on Kanye's track – but it blasts off from there with a far more varied, continually evolving sound. The beats roll from stable to frenetic, and the tune eventually brings in some pretty incredible soul jazz keyboards – and finally comes full circle. "UWM" is a creative mix of spacey hip hop and jazzy keyboard grooves.
(Limited edition with etched art B-Side.)

Mario Biondi — Sun ... LP
Sony (Italy), 2013. New Copy 2LP Gatefold .... $34.99
The sun shines brightly on Mario Biondi – really making this record sparkle with a charm that goes way beyond Mario's previous albums – a quality that's less retro than before, and which shows Biondi as a growing soul star with really universal appeal! There's still some of the old school jazz in the mix that we love from Mario's Schema work – but the album's also got a fuller production style at times, one that really expands the palette of Biondi's colors, and which has him working here with help from key guests who include Omar, Leon Ware, Al Jarreau, Incognito, and Chaka Khan – and even a bit of organ from the James Taylor Quartet! Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick helped co-write a good number of tracks on the set – and titles include "Shine On", "Come To Me", "Woman Woman", "What Have You Done To Me", "Never Stop", "La Voglia La Pazzia L'Idea", "Girl Blue", "Light To The World", and "Catch The Sunrise".

Bird — Mermaid 3000 (single edit, Rascal mix, inst) ... 12-inch
Sony (Japan), 2001. Near Mint- (pic cover).... $4.99
An excellent upbeat club number – sung in Japanese by the lovely Bird, and produced by Shinichi Osawa of Mondo Grosso. The track's probably one of our favorites from Bird's latest LP – and it's got these kick-start beats at the beginning that are mixed with burst of strings that sound totally great. The vocals are extremely soulful, and mix in with these keyboard lines that percolate the track – swirling together in a way that makes the cut instantly compelling!

new Brand New Heavies — Forward ... CD
Shanachie, 2013. New Copy .... $16.99 18.98
Brand New Heavies back in action – and sounding every bit as great as always! The group still has that sublime mix of soul, jazz, and funk that's made them so great right from the start – a mode that's steeped in classic influences from the 60s and 70s, yet finds a way to come out sounding really fresh and unique on every track! Instrumentation is razor-sharp, and mostly live – and vocals are by N'Dea Davenport, Jan Kincaid, Dawn Joseph, and Simon Bartholomew – creating a nice mix of personalities that make the record feel even more joyously collaborative than ever – almost as if the group's borrowed a page from the Incognito book – and the great way that combo has of coming together. The sound is warm and flowing throughout – never stiff or commercial – and titles include "Heaven", "Turn The Music Up", "Do You Remember", "On The One", "Sunlight", "Forward", "Addicted", and "A Little Funk In Your Pocket".

Bucketheads — All In The Mind ... CD
Henry Street/Get On Down, 1995. New Copy .... $9.99 16.98
A killer set from the young Kenny Dope – one of his first big-name projects of the 90s, and a great showcase for his already-mature approach to a groove! There's echoes here of the indie east coast club scene of a few years before – some of the soul of New Jersey, and the playful pastiche of Todd Terry and others – yet Kenny also takes things even farther, really hitting that warm, soulful synthesis of elements that made his Masters At Work productions so unique – way more than just the sum of their parts, as you'll hear here! The record has a few famous samples that stand out nicely – and titles include "Whew", "Sayin Dope", "Got Myself Together", "Time & Space", "Just Plain Funky", "You're A Runway", and "The Bomb" – in both radio edit and "original Henry St mix".

Dam-Funk — Toeachizown Vol 3 – Life ... LP
Stones Throw, 2009. New Copy .... $9.99
Galactic funk & synth soul from Dam-Funk – his epic full length debut Toeachizown for Stones Throw – and a record that should be a game changer for the southern Cali ambassador of cosmic funk beats, heavy bass and synth grooves! Dam-Funk is part throwback to the electro era – his vintage synths, bass and drum machine grooves are strongly rooted in the end of the 70s and first few years of the 80s vibe, but he's putting his own modern spin on the sounds, keeping it vital and fresh, and quite likely to be bitten by a bevy of superstar producers to come! Occasionally with slow jam or tripped out vocals, but with longer instrumental jams, Dam Funk's fusion of old school and future funk is in a cosmic realm of its own! Vinyl version was originally released as a 5LP set – and now it's available in separate volumes. Vol 3 includes: "Love Is Here 2nite (I Can Feel It)", "Could I Be Losing Another Lover?", "Show Me The Way U Feel", "One Less Day" and "I Wanna Thank U (4 Steppin' Into My Life)".

Mark De Clive-Lowe — Melodius Beats Vol 1 ... CD
Antipodean (UK), 2004. New Copy .... $9.99
Far more than just a full album from keyboard wiz and producer Mark De Clive-Lowe – a much-needed collection of his various remixes, small label recordings, and small projects from the past few years – pulled from a variety of labels around the globe, and packaged into one overstuffed set! The tunes all have different lives and histories, but they're linked together here by Mark's wonderfully spacey sound and cosmic musical vision – a key force in 21st century soul, heard to positive effect on every tune on the collection. Titles include "Pan Africa (Melodious rmx)" by Danilo Perez, "Life Mirrors" by Beatless, "Africa (Restless Soul mix)" by Meitz, "No Fusion Generation (rmx)" by Til Bronner, "Return To Paradise (rmx)" by Shirley Horn, and the tracks "Relax Unwind", "Move On Up (Opaque rmx)", "The Way It Goes", "Day By Day (DJ Spinna rmx)", and "Nites Like These" – all by Mark.

Deep Jazz — Meeting ... CD
Perfect Toy (Germany), 2012. New Copy .... $12.99
The amazing second album from Deep Jazz – and every bit as spiritual and soulful as the first! These guys really blew us away with their debut, and we're loving them even more this time around – and can honestly say that they're one of the few contemporary combos to ever get our favorite sounds of the 70s just right – that magical music that came out on labels like Strata East and other small indies of the time – that post-Coltrane generation when musicians really stretched their skills to the heavens in search of new sounds! The arrangements, production, and execution here are wonderful – with no modern tricks or gimmicks to get in the way at all – and in addition to great warm acoustic bass from group leader Jerker Kluge, the set also features alto, tenor, flute, bass clarinet, and piano – plus some great Alice Coltrane-like harp, sweet percussion, and even female vocals on a few cuts. Titles include the great originals "No Doubt", "The Meeting", "Movement", "Mystic Sky", "Invisible", and "East & West" – plus great versions of "Little Sunflower" and "Spirits Up Above".

new Dusty — Mood Matters ... CD
Jazz & Milk (Germany), 2013. New Copy Gatefold .... $14.99
As you might imagine, we're huge fans of any artist with Dusty in their name – but these guys have a really special sound we've been digging since their start! The record may well be the best we've heard so far from this cool German project – one rooted in the core contributions of Christoph Doepke, but which features loads of live guest instrumentation to really flesh out the sound – taking things into territory that includes a bit of Afro Funk, jazzy fusion, and Neo Soul – a nice sense of variety, but all without ever making the album sound too scattered or all over the map! Instead, Dusty has a great way of doing everything just the right way – with a solid vibe that almost takes us back to the best years of the Schema or Compost labels. Titles include "Mood Matters", "Danse Macabre", "Seventy Three", "Longing Lingers", "Cultura", "Mozafrique", "Colors Per Minute", and "Under The Same Drum".

Extra Medium — Extra Medium EP (10" single) ... 12-inch
Record Breakin, 2013. New Copy .... $9.99
The cover alone was enough to draw us in – a nice tribute to one of the best Dave Grusin albums of the 70s – and the spacey grooves are more than enough to keep us coming back again and again! Beats are plenty crispy, and mixed with these sweetly flowing keys – and the vocals shift from track to track, really illuminating the grooves in a different way – and bringing a nicely deep spirit to the set! "Know Thy Self" features John Robinson and Miles Bonny, "Tonight" has great vocals from Zaki Ibrahim, "Born Again" bristles with contributions from Nicholas Ryan Grant and Fresh Daily, and "Eyes Of Dreams" is a sweet trippy instrumental – with great acid keys, taking it slow!

Beatmaker FaltyDL delivers a warm batch of moody soundscapes for Ninja Tune! The sounds are mix loose, ambient atmospherics with some pretty insistant beats – and that mix of soundtrack and avant composer dynamics with more invigorating beats and bits of soulful vocals floating in and out really speaks to us in a compelling way! Four Tet — Rounds (10th Anniversary Edition – with bonus live CD) ... CD
Domino, 2003. New Copy 2 CDs .... $14.99 15.98
Kieran Hebden's third album as Four Tet – an unpredictable, completely hypnotic batch of abstract beatcraft that sounded like it was built to last when it first appeared in the early 00s – and sure enough, it's sounds as fresh as ever a decade+ later! What makes Four Tet at his best so irresistible is the way to rolls from loosely connective beats and hazy atmosphere on one track to heavy sensory overload and back again, fully hypnotizing either way, and all the while holding together in a way that feels of like a single piece. There's a lot of different sounds coming in and out, and not a single audible bit of it is dispensable. Near perfection from one of the more creative laptop instrumentals of his generation. Titles include "Hands", "She Moves She", "First Thing", "My Angel Rocks Back And Forth", "Spirit Fingers", "Unspoken", "Chia", "As Serious As Your Life", "Aney They All Look Broken Hearted" and "Slow Jam". 10th Anniversary edition includes a bonus CD featuring a full live performance from Copenhagen, 2004.

Ravi Harris & The Prophets — Funky Sitar Man ... CD
BBE (UK), 1997. Used .... $11.99
Surprisingly fantastic bit of funky sitar tracks! The project's a recent one, but it's got a classic 70s global crossover funk sound that's very much in the vein of the weird Indian-funk work of Ananda Shankar or The Dave Pike set. The record's got a raw Meters-esque groove at the base – which makes for a very tight funky sound – and Ravi plays these cool sitar licks over the top, in some very tasty riffs! Includes a bunch of great originals, like "Funky Sitar Man", "Path of the Blazing Sarong", and "Ravi's Thing" – plus great covers like "Look A Py Py", "Same Beat", and "Pass the Peas". Really good stuff, and way better than we expected it to sound!

J's Bee — Isotope ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2013. New Copy .... $16.99
The first record we've heard from this Japanese collective in many years – and a set that definitely marks a real maturation in their music! The album was inspired by the tragic events of the 2011 nuclear catastrophe in Japan – and shows a decidedly deeper side of J's Bee's music – one that has a lot more jazz than before, and a strong ear for earthy soundscapes – almost an ECM-like quality that's mixed with a few of their more conventional groove! These guys aren't aiming for the dancefloor this time around – and instead, the whole album is woven together as a rich tapestry – with strong thought for the way the sounds and songs emerge, letting all the messages resonate strongly. The set features some especially great sax solos and Fender Rhodes – plus soulful vocals from Yuko Kawasaki – on titles that include "Lights", "Strange Supper", "Blind In The Rye", "Chuck It All", "Laika Blanca Music", "Angel Puke", and "Under The Sun".

Jaga Jazzist — Jaga Jazzist Live With The Britten Sinfonia ... CD
Ninja Tune (UK), 2013. New Copy .... $12.99 14.99
The often cinematic sounds of Jaga Jazzist, given an extra orchestral sweep – working beautifully well with the Britten Sinfonia chamber orchestra! It's a match made in jazzy, proggy, soundtracky heaven. Jaga Jazzist has a sprawling sound even at their core – with soul jazz, prog and contemporary club sounds delivered in a way that's brilliantly unique to the group – so surely stands to reason that they could adapt quite brilliantly in a grander concert environment. Well, it's even greater than you'd expect! The guitar, vibes, percussion, horns, synth and piano of Jaga Jazzist is complemented beautifully by Britten Sinfonia's strings, flutes, clarinets, bassoon and additional horns and percussion. Includes the slow-building, epic 15+ minute opener "One-Armed Bandit", plus sweet symphonic takes on "Kitty Wu", "Prungen", "For All You Happy People", "Toccata", "Bananfluer Overalt", "Music! Dance! Drama!" and "Oslo Skyline". Recorded at Rockefeller Music Hall in Oslo and at the Baribican in London in fall and summer 2012.

Tony Allen — Ole (Moritz Von Oswald rmx)/Ise Nla (Reggae Land dub) ... 12-inch
2007. New Copy .... $11.99 Around March 1, 2013 (delayed)
A very dubby remix of this tune by Tony Allen – one that features plenty of brooding basslines amidst the percussion! The track almost takes us back to some of the first few Tony Allen singles during his Comet Records comeback years in the 90s – and Moritz Von Oswald brings a nicely abstracted feel to the music. "Ise Nla" is fairly dubby too – but in a very different way, and one that has all the Jamaican flavors you might guess from the title – including a bit of echoey horns over the top!

new Corduroy — Very Yeah – The Director's Cut – Complete Compositions 1992 to 1996 (Dad Man Cat/High Havoc/Out Of Here/Quattro) (4CD set) ... CD
Acid Jazz/Cherry Red (UK), 1990s. New Copy 4 CDs .... $24.99 Just Sold Out!
Four classic albums by this hip UK group – all with rare bonus tracks too! First up is the wonderful Dad Man Cat – our favorite record by one of the best funk records to ever come out of England! On this great debut album, Corduroy are a tight funky combo, with an organ and clavinet mod sound that still holds up damn well over the years. Their songwriting is great, and the groove on the set push way past the stock acid jazz riffing of the early 90s. Best example of this is "Skirt Alert", a cut that begins with an amazing drum break, then grooves into a Brazilian-inflected funk number, in the manner of Earth Wind & Fire's use of the idiom. Other tracks include "Chowdown", "How To Steal The World", "Electric Soup", "Money Is", and "Six Plus One". CD also features six bonus demo tracks! High Havoc is a real shift for Corduroy, who are opening their sound a lot here from earlier releases – showing that the group was way more than just one of London's many retro funk combos at the beginning of the 90s. The set includes the sublime track "Something In My Eye", a breezy bossa number that would almost put Brasil 66 to shame, and which we can guarantee will have you hitting the repeat button on your CD player again and again! Other tracks include "The Corduroy Orgasm Club", "Breakfast In Love", "Nobody Move", "Very Yeah", "Clearing Up Music", "Lovely Lonely & Loaded", and "The Frighteners". CD features 9 more bonus tracks – some previously unreleased! Next is Out Of Here – a record that's still heavily steeped in the 60s territory of previous releases, but one with a bit more of a mod feel overall! There's lots of heavy Hammond and guitar in the mix, and the vocals have a warm appeal too – kind of a blue-eyed soul take on mod London modes – served up here with a sound that's arguably tighter and more soulful than lots of current work of this nature! Corduroy was always a group that never fully got its due – and with records like this under their belt, they were easily one of the hippest acts on the Acid Jazz imprint at the time. Titles include "Don't Wait For Monday", "Practice What You Preach", "Magic Carpet", "January Woman", "Mini", "Motorhead", "Along The Rooftops", "End Of The Rainbow", and "Red Mercury". CD features 7 more bonus tracks – a number of unissued demos! Last up is Quattro – Live In Japan 1994 – a great little live set from Corduroy – recorded late in their career, but with the stripped down funky feel of their best early work! The album was recorded in Japan – but the groove is pure London jazz funk all the way, with a tight mix of keyboards and riffing guitars, electrically grooving in a very soulful way. Includes versions of "Skirt Alert", "Something In My Eye", "Mini", "Money is", "London, England", "Electric Soup", "E Type", "The Frighteners", and "Chow Down".
