Genius work from one of our favorite artists! Both tracks sparkle with the kind of retro-jazzy intensity that we've come to expect after Conte's brilliant Jet Sounds LP – a perfect blend of classic bossa grooves and modern dancefloor production, in a mode that blows away all the competition! Here, a similarly Morricone-mad bunch of folks pay tribute to the maestro, by remixing tracks from his classic soundtracks of the 60s and 70s! The entire Madlib Medicine Show series on 13 CDs – the wildly ambitious, year+ of monthly releases – collected and available to get in one tidy transaction! The series works as both a Madlib refresher course and a worthy introduction, whether you've dug his marquee efforts and behind-the-scenes production wizardry for the past decade+, or you're just finding him. Roughly half of the Medicine Show discs are in the hazy hip hop style he's perhaps most known for, plus forays into leftfield jazz, funk and Global psych atmospherics, disco soul mixes and beyond. Volumes 1-13 together for the first time: Before The Verdict, Flight To Brazil, Beat Konducta In Africa, 420 Chalice All Stars, History Of The Loop Digga, High Jazz, Advanced Jazz, Nittyvill, Black Soul, Low Budget Hi Fi, Raw Medice and The Black Tape.

Moody mellow vocals and lots of spare sounds – a really compelling collaboration between singer Greta Aagre and keyboardist Erik Honore! Honore plays a variety of instruments on the record, but his best contribution here is "samples" – bits of sound that are usually filtered down from acoustic sources, and delivered with a slightly skittish feel – never over the top, but kind of textural – in a way that nicely offsets the warmer qualities of Greta's vocals. Most tunes are relatively atmospheric, and draw energy from contributions on trumpet, guitar, and percussion from a few different guest musicians – on titles that include "Rope", "Before Betrayal", "Year Of The Bullet", "Move To Strike", "Home", "Stateline", and "Birth Mark".

The combination of talents come together here in a very new way – with a style that's much grittier and earlier than before, although still pretty darn groovy overall – almost putting a raspy old school touch on a scene that's definitely matured on its own, and may well be old enough to lay claim to the rootsy sound of this set! Rob's songwriting has definitely matured, and at some of the best moments, there's almost a British Tom Waits-y kind of quality to the set. A long-awaited full length set – one that finally brings together all of the amazing Tony Allen reworks done by the Honest Jon's label! These "chop up" tracks were originally issued over a range of limited 12" singles, and they're really amazing stuff – not just remixes of Tony Allen's work, but re-recordings and re-interpretations as well – a batch of music that stands amazingly well on its own, even if you're not a fan of Tony originally – and which takes his music into even more exotic territory than just Afro Funk! The choice of artists here is key to the set – as players from other Afro-influenced genres really take a new spin on Allen's music – and are allowed to strongly bring their own sounds to the set. As you'll hear in this set, Antena's style borrows a lot from the bossa, but also throws in some wonderful poppish touches – including jangly guitars recorded in a similar mode to some of the other French/European indie groups of the time, and a slight darkness in production that almost gives a Martin Hannett-like undercurrent to the whole set. The group's album Camino Del Sol has been lovingly reissued with a great set of notes, as well as a series of bonus tracks from an additional ep – making for a beautiful 14 track package that will really help you rediscover this nearly-lost group! The sound of Detroit rises high on this excellent full length set from John Arnold – a wonderfully soulful set of skittish beats and jazzy grooves! Arnold's working here with artists that include Amp Fiddler, Ayro, Malik Alston, and Mady Kouyate – and grooving in a style that reminds us a lot of our favorite recent underground work from London, but which also has a lot of the pulsating soul of the Detroit scene of the past 20 years! Tunes shift easily between instrumentals and vocal numbers – always with some over the top touches that sets them apart from the run of the mill – and titles include "Broken", "Fabric", "Anaconda", "Neighborhood Science", "Get Yourself Together", and "I Can Be".

A great step forward for The Bamboos – still as funky as ever, but in a much greater range of styles than before! The core deep funk sound we've always loved is still burning away at the bottom – thanks to the ever-trusty grooves of Lance Ferguson and crew – but this time around, there's also a host of guests who really seem to shape the overall feel of the record – Aloe Blacc, Megan Washington, Klye Auldist, Daniel Merriweather, Bobby Flynn, and Ella Thompson – each bringing in their own great flavors, and creating a depth of sound that's mighty nice! Most of these guests are vocalists, but their shifting styles seems to spur the instrumentation onto new heights too – adapting to suit the mood, yet never in a way that's too frenetic to keep the album from being unified overall. Titles include "Where Does The Time Go", "What I Know", "I Got Burned", "Cut Me Down", "Midnight", "Medicine Man", "Window", and "Hello Stranger".

Soulful vocals, synths and orchestral pop from Beauty Room on Far Out! Beauty Room features joint production and songwriting by singer Jinadu and synths maestro Kirk Degiorgio – the latter a Far Out veteran at this point, and an artist whose creative evolution has been a joy to follow! They work in some pretty diverse influences, from classic folk soul to modern avant pop – and an approach that's more about soulful songcraft than exercises in mood and atmosphere. Jinadu's soul-steeped voice has a lot to do with that, but the instrumentation is and production are top notch. Synth, Rhodes, guitars, bass and drums at the core – plus some very nice use of strings, courtesy of the Metropole Orchestra and strings arranger Paul Buckmaster. Includes "We Can't Throw You Away", "Shadows Falling", "All In My Head", "But For Now", "Walking The Fine Line", "One Man Show", "So Far", "The Last Calling", "Heaven Is In Your Mind" and "No Rejections". 11 tracks on the CD.

An incredible full length debut from vocalist Mario Biondi – a jazz singer we'd rank right up there with the legendary Mark Murphy – supported here with great backings from the High Five Quintet! The grooves here are in a soaring, tightly-stepping style – very much the best club jazz mode of the contemporary European scene – with all-acoustic instrumentation, and rhythms that move along at a really great dancefloor pace! Mario's vocals are really unique too – with a little rasp that catches slightly, and really brings a timeless quality to his voice – mixing personal feeling into the lively numbers on the album, with an unexpected depth that really makes the album stand out from similar sessions of this type! There's echoes of hip vocal jazz work from years past by artists like The Peddlers, Bobby Cole, or Mark Murphy – and titles include "A Child Runs Free", "No Mercy For Me", "This Is What You Are", "I Can't Keep From Cryin Sometimes", "Rio De Janeiro Blue", "Handful Of Soul", "On A Clear Day", "Never Die", "No Trouble On The Mountain", "Slow Hot Wind", and "Gig".

A special single with some great vocals from Mario Biondi – singing here with some especially great backings from the High Five Quintet! "This Is What You Are" is a warm modal groover – one that builds beautifully from the ground up, and which is made especially nice by Mario's warmly raspy vocals! The remix pumps things up a bit more on the rhythms – yet still keeps all the jazzy charm of the tune intact!

New grooves, but with an older dancefloor style – recorded here in a sound that's got lots of the dark electronics that showed up on the European scene in the early 80s! At many levels, this record is one that could have played big in the clubs in Berlin or Manchester, circa 1983 – as it's got lots of analogue electronics and programmed rhythms that pulsate strongly, but often with a colder sort of groove. The focus is mostly on the instrumentation, although there are a bit of vocals – and if the record didn't have a 2006 copyright date, the set could easily pass itself off as a lost relic from the Sheffield scene of many years back! Titles include "The Devil In Us", "Coach Me", "On Just Foot", "I Regret The Flower Power", and "An Other Skin".

A great little follow-up to the first Black Devil album – a dubbier take on some of the same tunes, served up in a way that's almost more compelling than the original! As before, there's a real early 80s groove going on here – a style that's somewhere between UK post punk electronica, and some of the electro disco work coming out of other European scenes – all delivered without gimmick or cliche, and less of the "trash" elements that you might associate with other recent retro work of this nature. The core album presents dub takes on 6 tunes – "The Devil In Us", "On Just Foot", "Coach Me", "An Other Skin", "Constantly No Respect", and "I Regret The Flower Power". CD also features 6 more collaboration/remix tracks – done with Unit 4, Elitetechnique, Black Mustang, and In Flagrenti!

It's been quite a few years since we last heard from Black Mighty Wax – but it's definitely been well worth the wait – as these guys are deeper and more sophisticated than ever, with a range of sounds we never would have expected on the last release! Soul styles are still very much at the front of their mix – and the record features vocals from a range of great singers who include Sarah Jane Morris, Neffa, Ricardo Phillips, Lily Latuheru, Silvia Donati, and others – set to grooves that still sparkle with the same keyboard elements that have always made Black Mighty great – but which also have more acoustic touches from time to time, and a rhythmic variation that goes way past the usual Irma groove! Titles include "Shake Your Heart", "We The Family", "Let Me Go", "Pull Down", "Follow That Fellow", "Riverside", and "Nightdriver" – and the CD features a few bonus remixes too!

Nocturnal boombap from Blockhead – a sleepless, samples and electic-beats heavy survey of an after hours metropolis – finding Blockhead as insistently inventive and timeless in approach as ever! We love that Blockhead's work kind of exists in it's own world, yet clearly shows love for NYC life – and the globally diverse soundscapes strongly represent both that great urban landscape and Blockheads inner genius. Includes "Never Forget Your Token", "Creeps Crouchin", "Panic In Funkytown", "Meet You At Tower Records", "Escape The Meadow", "Smoke Signals", "Midnight Blue", "Snapping Point", "Beyond Reach" feat Baby Dayliner and "The Robin Byrd Era".

No need for a leap of faith where Bluey's concerned – as we've been loving his music with Incognito for many many years, and we're more than happy to hear the man on his own! The vibe here is every bit as soulful and righteous as the best Incognito work – but there's also a more personal sound, too – especially since Bluey's on lead vocals on every track – quite a change from before, as he often lets other singers take the lead! Turns out, Bluey's a hell of a lead singer on his own – with this warm and slightly raspy style that really fits in wonderfully with the grooves – which are heavy on Bluey's own guitar, plus keyboards and other instrumentation from Ski Oakenfull and Richard Bull. If you like Incognito as much as us, there's plenty to love here – and titles include "Stronger", "Leap Of Faith", "Sky", "Keep Myself Together", "Ain't Nobody's Business", "Got To Let My Feelings Show", and "Live Like A Millionaire".

Jesse Boykins on Nina Tune – a surprisingly great combination, and one that seems to give Jesse an even bolder sound than usual! The feel of the record is very much like before – a loose, homegrown set of grooves – sometimes funky, sometimes spacey – definitely aware of hip hop, but not hip hop at all – and instead a very personal blend of lyrics, rhymes, and cosmic jazzy instrumentation! Of course, the contributions of MeLo X are also a key part of the new energy too – but there's also a core vibe to the record that's definitely Boykins continuing on his path from before. The set features guest work by Trae Harris, Mara Hruby, Ango, Christ Turner, Kesed, and Joe Kenneth – and titles include "I'm New Here", "Black Orpheus", "Broken Wings", "Schwaza", "The Perfect Blues", "Searching Her Ways", "Zulu Guru", "Tribe Of Stafa", and "Better For You".

A sweet set of contemporary bossa gems – all older numbers made famous by Joao Gilberto in his early days – spun out with a very fresh finish here by the Brazilian Love Affair combo! The group work in a mostly live jazz mode, with just a bit of programming on the rhythms – and the album's especially heavy on Fender Rhodes, which updates an older bossa sound nicely – amidst older-styled instrumentation on acoustic guitar, Hammond, trombone, and flute. The vocals are great – with the same raspy charm of Joao's early recordings – that very human, very honest quality that made his singing so different from other vocalists of his generation – and titles include "Rosa Morena", "Desafinado", "Voce E Eu", "O Barquinho", "Saudade Fez Um Samba", "Ho Ba La La", and "Chega De Saudade".

A greatly expanded version of this recent classic of 21st Century soul – complete with a full bonus disc of material! The original set came out a few years back, and grabbed our ears instantly – work by one of the best new downtempo acts we've heard in years – a British outfit with a really solid sense of soul and jazz, one that pushes way past simple studio tricks and production flourishes! Most of the tracks on this set have great female vocals – sweetly drifting amidst the slow beats and keyboard riffs with an approach that's clearly influenced by current American indie soul, but which also moves beyond it, into a more abstract, cosmically-oriented mode. The track almost takes us back to some of the first few Tony Allen singles during his Comet Records comeback years in the 90s – and Moritz Von Oswald brings a nicely abstracted feel to the music.
