Foreign Exchange — Dear Friends: An Evening With The Foreign Exchange (CD & DVD) ... CD
Foreign Exchange, 2011. Used CD & DVD .... $15.99
A double disc CD & DVD package showcasing one of our favorite souful acts on the contemporary landscape – Nicolay & Phonte's brilliant and ever-evolving Foreign Exchange project! Dear Friends showcases an acoustic concert performed for a private audience –- the great touring lineup that includes Zo!, Sy Smith, and singer/songwriter Jeanne Jolly. From the get go, we've been impressed by both the original songwriting from Foreign Exchange as well as the way they filter diverse influences into their own unique vibe – and this acoustic setting really gets to the heart and soul of it. This is an essential document for fans of the group, but it's also a fine intro if you're just now coming aboard! The live set includes "Fight For Love", "All Roads", "Take Off The Blues", "Lose Your Way", "Greatest Weapon Of All Time", a nice cover of James Taylor's "Something In The Way She Moves", "Laughing At Your Plans", "Daykeeper", "House Of Cards", Zo!'s "Greatest Weapon Of All Time" and "I Wanna Know". Also includes 2 new studio tracks: "Steal Away" feat vocals by Jeanny Jolly and piano by Zo! and "All The Kisses" feat Amber & Paris Strother of KING.
(Out of print. Comes packaged in a DVD-sized digipak.)

Herbaliser — There Were Seven ... CD
Department H, 2012. New Copy .... $12.99 13.99
Cinematic funky instrumentals (plus a few guest vocal cuts) from Herbaliser – working with as diverse of a stylistic backdrop as ever before, and once again with a nice live band feel on a good deal of the record – which is quite impressive, given that The Herbaliser duo of Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba are largely responsible for the sprawling sound on There Were Seven! There's quite a lot of moody hip hop funk on this one, with some deft use of sampled bits of vocal, programming, bass and keys – plus a handful of standout vocal tunes with guests Hanna Clive, Twin Peaks, George The Poet and Teenburger. Includes "Return Of The Seven", "The Lost Boys" with Hanna Clive, "Welcome To Extravagance", "Mother Dove", "Take 'Em On", "Setting Up", "What You Asked For", "Deep In The Woods", "Inside The Machine", "Danny Glover" feat Twin Peaks, "Move As One" and more.

Hannah Williams & The Tastemakers — Hill Of Feathers ... CD
Record Kicks (Italy), 2012. New Copy .... $16.99
Surprisingly deep soul from Hannah Williams – a singer who seems like just your run of the mill local talent on the cover – but who comes across with the smoking sound of some legendary southern soul diva on the record! The band and the backing is pretty great too – way more than just a rehash of older soul modes – and instead a contemporary approach that has subtle strains of some of the more interesting funk elements that have percolated globally of late – all fused together by Diesler, who's kind of the "artistic director" of the set – and who gives the music a Tru Thoughts sort of complexity. Titles include "The Kitchen Strut", "Work It Out", "Washed Up", "Don't Tell Me", "Things To Come", "Get It", and "Do Whatever Makes You Feel Hot".

new Foreign Exchange — Leave It All Behind (plus instrumentals) ... CD
HBD, 2008. Used 2CD .... $9.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
The second album from Foreign Exchange – the formerally bi-continental project of North Carolina MC, and nascent soul singer Phonte of Little Brother, and transplanted Dutch producer Nicolay – who take an even deeper turn into spacey soul on Leave It All Behind! Given that Phonte is singing rather than rapping, you'd be tempted to say that Foreign Exchange has left hip hop behind, but hip hop is in the heart and soul – and the group was born of the idea of hip hop as an evolving art form – so rhymes or not, it's hip hop to us. The spacey, jazzy melodic groove here finds producer Nicolay in peak form – a nice balance between thumping bass, beats and mellow atmospherics, and the mood is impeccable. We're pretty much stunned at how well Phonte is developing as a vocalist, with laidback lead and overdubbed backing vocals that go back the heart & soul comment above. A left turn for a duo that was adventurous to begin, with an excellent move to the next level! Titles include "Daykeeper", "Take Off The Blues", "All Or Nothing/Coming Home For You", "I Wanna Know", "House Of Cards", "Sweeter Than You", "Valediction", "If She Breaks Your Heart", "If This Is Love", "Something To Behold" and "Leave It All Behind".

new Mario Biondi — Yes You Live ... CD
Halidon (Italy), 2010. Used 2CD .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
The second live set we've gotten to hear from Mario Biondi, and it's the second terrific and worthy one! Yes You Live is a double set that finds Mario working in both acoustic jazz and electric jazz modes – both with a lot of soul. There's a contemporary freshness to the whole thing, as well as a genuine love of classic soulful jazzy vocal performers – traits we've always loved about Mario's studio work and sounding all the more vibrantly alive in a live setting! CD Yes includes "Nature Boy", "Serenity",, "Black Shop", "Love Dreamer", "Winter In America", "Ecstasy" and more.
